Although the publication date says 1979, this edition is not a new translation of Sa'di's "Gulistan," but a reprint of the one made by Eastwick in 1852.

While the Mathnawi of Rumi is pretty much well known to the west (sadly to some extent for the wrong reasons) and popular amongst many of the "supermarket spirituality" school of thought largely due to re-prints and miss prints of Nicholson's great translation the Gulistan and Bostan of Shaikh Said are sadly very little known.

The book in many ways is similar to the Mathnawi in that in a prose style, it is a collection of moral stories, wise words and tales. It is not something you would pick up and read from start to finish but rather refer to and contemplate upon. Anyone familiar with Eastern books of wisdom (or even say for example Aesop's Fables or Canterbury Tales) will appreciate this book.

The translation is a little dated but well done and easy to read and follow. This book was once a popular study guide in the East (at a time when wisdom was something that was favoured and cherished) It comes with a biography of Shaikh Sadi and a little background to the book. It does come with an introduction by Idrees Shah (of what value that is make up your own mind. I for one am a little tired of his 'anti Turk' introductions to books he has published with his name on the front as though he wrote them or translated them himself) The one benefit however with books published by Shah is that they are fairly cheap!

As a westerner interested in learning about other cultures, I learned about this book and wanted to read it. Some of the books from Asian writers who have read have suffered because of their patronizing approach to the writers and their cultures but that is not so in this case. Sadi's collection of moral stories admixed with his beautiful poetry is a wonderul inroduction to Sufist philosophy.
It's best to indulge in small doses as i is as powerful as poetry in any language.

_Saratoga Trunk_ tells a love story while evoking all the richness of three eras--Paris and New Orleans of the 1850s-1870s, the Gilded Age (or the Robber Baron period), and the early 20th century. It's the story of Clio Dulaine and Clint Maroon, who begin an unconventional relationship in an unforgettable scene bursting with detail.

That detail--immediate and sensory as well as historical and nuanced--makes the novel as effective as the best period romances, because it supports the excellent characterization to create a believable story from improbable elements (e.g., half-Black illegitimate girl educated in France, dwarf servant, cowboy dandy in New Orleans, they travel to Saratoga Springs in upstate New York and meet the movers and shakers of the Gilded Age, etc.).

Masterful prose--sparely elegant at times and incomparably lush at others--combined with sharply-drawn detail and fully rounded characters leads to a truly pleasurable experience. I completely recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a writer from the Golden Age of 20th-century American literature at the top of her form. Even _So Big_, for which the same author won a Pulitzer in 1924, is merely the equal of this novel.

Ferber tales the story of Clio Dulaine -- an illegitimate French girl who comes to New Orleans after residing in Paris for most of her life. The story is set in the mid 1800's. Clio and her entourage include: Kaka, a voodoo-like nurse maid and her colorful friend Cupide -- a dwarf. Clio's ultimately goal is to reveal to her upper class blood grandparents who she is and blackmail them.

Clio is successful at this but while scheming she falls in love with Clint Maroon -- a flamboyant cowboy from the rough country Texas. They clash with each other, but ultimately there is a bond. When the scheme with Clio's grandparents forces them to move on they decide to go to Saratoga, New York. Saratoga, at this period of time, was a vacation resort area where many rich people spent their time. Clio schemes for more money by chumming up with the plentiful, wealthy bachelors. However, her bond and feelings for Clint causes problems.

This story was interesting in the fact that it reveals what it must have been like to live in New Orleans at this period of time. In addition, Ferber paints a luxurious picture of the resort-like community of Saratoga. Clint is quite a character and the two of them complement one another (Clio reminded me of Scarlett O'Hara in many ways). While Clio was a hard one to like, the book does keep one interested. I felt Ferber's main point was that there may have been armed robberies and anarchy in the west at that period of time, but the east had its share of crime. Graft, economic warfare (even leading to violence), and greed nearly ruined the country. Overall, another interesting book that teaches something about the American social aspects of living in the middle/late 1800's.

This volume, The Sayings Gospel Q , contains a bit of history unknown to most about the origins of Christian documents. The book deals with the Q, or Sayings, gospel, a hypothesised document most likely shared by Matthew and Luke as a basis for their gospels, but which did not get incorporated into the final Christian canon of any community surviving past the ancient period.

The Q (short for Quelle, German for 'source') does not come down to modern times in any direct documentary form. Rather, it is a document whose existence has been theoretically accepted as a likely source for material that is shared by Matthew and Luke, but which is not found in Mark. The first three canonical gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke, are called synoptic gospels, as they look at essentially the same events in the essentially the same way; Matthew and Luke both contain substantial parts of Mark (albeit with some revisions), and each contain original material, but the amount of material they share apart from the Markan material led scholars to believe there was another source (hence Quelle, source) they held in common. The introductory essay by James M. Robinson, a noted biblical scholar also known for work on the Nag Hammadi texts, discusses this theory, as well as the method of reconstruction for Q. This is not without controversy, both in the theory and in the reconstruction, which the authors admit freely.

The translation work into English is done by James M. Robinson. The concordance of Q by John Kloppenborg is based upon his earlier work on Q, a new text based upon Greek texts (so any particular English version may not agree with the translations here). Q is set out in Matthew's framework with notations for Lukan differences; the annotations shows verbatim agreements between the two in the Greek text, with various other notations used to show the differences. Where these refer to Mark or other scriptural texts, this is also noted.

This book comes out of a process of almost two decades of work done by thge International Q Project, a team of scholars who put together the more substantial 'Critical Edition of Q', of which this is an abbreviation of sorts, largely for students.

This book presents a fascinating introduction to some alternative theories and readings, and shows the diversity of opinion about Jesus in the early church. To understand the historical context and documentary progression that leads from early Christianity to the present is to better understand our own world, and this text is one small part of that path to understanding.

At a slight 150 pages in paperback, Robinson's 'Sayings Gospel Q' is a handy little volume to have around, particularly because it provides the Greek version of the Q sayings, not only the English translations. I've also used Robinson's 600-page, exhaustively complete critical edition of Q in the Hermeneia series and find the shorter version a simple, well-presented, and useful companion in this area of Scripture study. --GP.

"Q." for a Mass Audience

For those up to it, "The Critical Edition...," by the same authors is the current last word on "Q." This short consideration running to one hundred seventy six pages should delight and more than satisfy all but the most sophisticated specialist and certain special pleaders. "Q." of course is the hypothetical sayings source embedded in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. In one form or another, it has been speculated on and studied for nearly the last two hundred years. However, there are still quarters in which the very existence of "Q." is hotly denied. As to special pleaders, there are two other translations and short general considerations of "Q." These are from scholars associated with the Jesus Seminar. But, it is the opinion of this reader that those books are somewhat agenda driven by the individual foundational biases of each author, Burton Mack and Marcus Borg. And in each case, they try to interpret "Q." which this book does not even attempt.

This book is from the International "Q." Project. It consists of an extended sixty odd page introduction by James M. Robinson. A short section on "sigla" is included to familiarize the reader with the interpretive notations within the translated texts. Then the consensus Greek recension of "Q." is provided with its parallel English translation. This is followed by an abbreviated concordance by John S. Kloppenborg. A short suggested reading list closes the book. The introduction traces "Q." scholarship from its inception until the present. It is a gold mine in many ways. The reader is led through the various scholarly assumptions, methods and exegesis from the Aramaic "Q." of Papias supporting apostolic Matthean authorship suggested by Schleiermacher in the early 1800's to the current consensus Greek text. All the major scholars are quoted at length in this chronological history. In essence, a short course in Biblical exegesis and its methodologies covering the last two centuries is provided. This material is illuminating both as to the search for "Q." and the historical Jesus. The parallel translations follow. No explanations or commentaries are provided. Also included are parallels from the Gospels of Mark and Thomas where applicable. It is this readers impression that there is an immense power rendered to these sayings by having them stand alone. You the reader are confronted with the purported sayings of Jesus. You are left to make of them what you will.

Is there dissent in the scholarly community from the work of the International "Q." project. Yes, there is both in English and in German. If there was an Aramaic text or multiple Greek texts, the consensus Greek text fails as a matter of fact. However, there has been a general slow building acceptance of the consensus Greek text over the last thirty or so years. Intense redactional analysis has clarified much. Possibly the most controversial aspect of all this is the dating of "Q." The authors conclude that the original stratum of sapiential material was probably written down in the early fifties with final redactions about the time of the fall of Jerusalem around 70 CE. If this dating is correct, it raises a host of serious questions about the literary critical search for the historical Jesus that has occupied so much of the last quarter of the twentieth century. According to the International "Q" Project, it would seem that Jesus had a lot to say and those sayings first show up in written form in a text that is nearly contemporaneous with the written passion narrative of the gospel of Mark.

Teasers as warmup course, or appetizer feast, here is consummate surreal gourmet providing the inspiration with about fifty recipes composing sections on: fish, meat, fowl, veggies, sweets.

This continues his strong past of imaginative food with stylish twists of humor and fun with food. Try the likes of: Fish Cakes (salmon cupcakes with dill mashed potato icing); Cocktail Dates (bacon-wrapped parmesan-stuffed dates); Cowboy Cookies (chile-crusted tenderloin between carmelized yam slices); Inside Out BL's (bacon, arugula, and goat cheese sandwiched between fried tomato slices);Knuckle Sandwich (nutella, hazelnuts and sauteed pears on toasted pound cake).

Add to all this suggested menus, brief primer and notes oon frying and advance-prep ingredient handling, and suggested menus.

This is fun food, more lighthearted but serious food as well along the lines of Gale Gand's "Just A Bite" or her partner's Rick Tramonto's "Amuse Bouche."

Through my job in the kitchen appliance industry, I was lucky enough to see Bob Blumer do his thing in a very intimate (about 10 people) setting. From the moment he showed up wearing an AC/DC t-shirt and a pair of outrageous chef's pants, I knew this was going to be a lot more fun than the typical Food Network cooking shows(except maybe maybe Giada's Everyday Italian...but that's for different reasons).
Besides tasting great, the foods he prepared were just downright funny! He was very personable and had a great sense of humor which is reflected throughout this entire book.
I wasn't going to give this book 5 stars simply because these are just not foods you can prepare on any sort of a regular basis. They are mostly meant to be...for lack of a beeter way to describe it....different. But I reconsidered and gave it 5 stars anyway because it's just so damn funny and so damn original!
If you are going to a party, get-together or anytype of social event where food will be served, and you want your offering to be the talk of the moment...this is the book for you. Even if you're not a great cook or don't do such a hot job preparing these bites, the presentation alone will make you the hit! Check it out!

My son thoroughly enjoys this series. "The Tale of Benjamin Bunny" is a particularly good story to read after the child becomes familiar with "The Tale of Peter Rabbit," which sets up this story of Benjamin Bunny and Peter Rabbit's visit to Mr. McGreggor's garden. The story itself is told in the same charming prose, using appropriate words that many of today's readers tend to avoid because they appear "too difficult." The series published by Frederick Warne, in particular, had the vision to size the book perfectly for small hands, allowing even the youngest "readers" to enjoy the story, whether it is read, or whether one studies the many delightful, detailed images that fit the text so well. I highly recommend this book, as well as the rest of the Beatrix Potter series published by Frederick Warne.

My 2 year old loves this story she calls it, the bunny's friend book. She enjoys this story more than Peter Rabbit. I think that the story is more eventful than Peter Rabit; and it is nice that the bunnies get to finish their adventure. I have read hundreds of stories to my daughter and we both find this one enjoyable my 5 month old also seems to enjoy it. She likes the colorful pictures. I guess you could say that everyone is happy when this story is chosen. If you like Peter Rabbit you'll like Benjamin Bunny.

For a smaller book designed to give a high level overview of Van Gogh's life and career as an artist, this book is surprisingly informative and well written. Van Gogh's life is covered in a well researched commentary and there are also sub-sections devoted specifically to "Masterpieces". The graphics are excellent and the analysis clear and concise. In terms of a good, brief overview of Vincent van Gogh, this book is first rate.

First of all I must say anything DK Publishing touches turns to gold; and the same goes double to infinity for Vincent. You would not believe the information packed into this 64 page carry anywhere book full of photographs of family and places he lived, amazing sketches, personal belongings, influences, quotes, and over 70 of his most popular and beautiful paintings and so much more! This is for everyone! It does not include "Starry Night" however.

Here are the contents: 1 YOUTH AND FAMILY 2 LIFE IN ENGLAND 3 PREACHING AND POVERTY 4 THE IMAGE OF THE SOWER 5 ETTEN AND THE HAGUE 6 PEASANTS AT WORK 7 A LOVE OF NATURE 8 A MATTER OF FAITH 9 A PEASANT MEAL 10 ARRIVAL IN ANTWERP 11 THE ANTWERP ACADEMY 12 A PARISIAN EXPERIENCE 13 IMAGES OF PARIS 14 THE IMPRESSIONISTS 15 NEW APPROACHES 16 JAPANESE INFLUENCES 17 SUNFLOWERS 18 A STUDY IN YELLOW 19 THE LURE OF THE SOUTH 20 VAN GOGH AND GAUGUIN 21 A HEROIC SELF PORTRAIT 22 THE AFFLICTED ARTIST 23 NATURAL STUDIES 24 COPIES 25 PROVENCAL LANDSCAPE 26 AN ERRATIC RECOVERY 27 A RETURN TO THE NORTH 28 THE FINAL ACT 29 KEY DATES/ VAN GOGH COLLECTIONS 30 GLOSSARY/ WORKS ON EXHIBIT 31 INDEX/ ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

What makes this book so enjoyable is that it has it all. Most books I've seen on Vincent are either loaded with art but the book layout is impossible to read due to lack of organization; or the opposite--books with tons of information but nothing but black and white thumbnail sketches. This book is a gem; extremely colorful plus has some black and white-- but each and every page is fully organized and beautiful to read and look at. Bruce Bernard, you have got to be the most organized man in the universe! WOW!

A must own for anyone and everyone! Especially the beginner to intermediate van Gogh enthusiast, however; the personal belongings, photographs, quotes and succinctness of this book would be well appreciated by the most acumen of Vincent's studiers/admirers.

P.S. I highly recommend this book and any other of the series of Eyewitness books that strike your fancy. I also own book #25 Crystal and Gems. There are 110 different books from everything to Music, Fossils, Reptiles, Invention, Weather, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome, Bible Lands, Volcano and Earthquake, Shark; Aztec, Inca and Maya; Castle, Pyramid, Ancient China, Archeology, North American Indian, Ocean, Battle, Witches and Magic-Makers, Space Exploration, Crime Detection, Force and Motion, Chemistry, Time and Space, Astronomy, Earth, Human Body, Medicine, Technology, Electronics, Renaissance, Impressionism, Goya, Manet, Monet, Leonardo & his times, Future, Mythology, Titanic, Football, Hurricane & Tornado, Presidents, Baseball....on and on! This book is for those cooks who don't mind spending a lot of time in the kitchen. Most tomato-based sauces start with fresh tomatoes. Most bean dishes start with dried beans. The few recipes I've tried are good, but I will no doubt spend a lot more time creating my own short cuts.I would have sent the book back, but the cost of return is more than half the price of the used copy I bought, which by the way is pristine. It is a beautiful book.

Often Chef's struggle with the challenges of vegetarianism thrown at them "a la minute" in any restaurant that does not have a deep vegetarian/vegan menu. As a professional chef, I received an advanced copy of Vegetarian Revenge. I can only say that Karen and Dr. Mann have spent a copious amount of time perfecting simple dishes that have a lot to say on the plate. I highly recommend this book to any chef or home chef that needs another tool in their kit to satisfy even the most demanding vegetarian's that are looking for unique flavors, ethnic vegetarian adventures and truly all natural wholesome , healthy cuisine. A good health and diet aid for any culinarian that has choosen to step away from the chemicals and meat, but will not compromise their palate.

This is a good executive summary of the disease and is very current. At 160 pages it is the "keep it simple" discussion of the disease for someone who wants to have overview information and be spared the details. For detail you should purchase Ovarian Cancer by Conner/Langford.
