Q and A Books

Alexander the Great, was born on or around July 20, 356 B.C.E., and is my favorite personality to read about in history. To me he is the whole package general, statesman, conqueror, and philosopher. The smartest man who ever lived, Aristotle, tutored him. Alexander conquered more of the known world than any other figure in history, accomplishing all this before he dies at the ripe old age of 33. Some people called him conqueror and violent overlord. Some other called him civilizer and even God! All of them yet, called him "The Great". He was the first man in modern history that took this name, "The Great"! Even as a young boy, he shows great promise.

Curtius' work is the oldest extant work available and based on eyewitness accounts. He does a better job than most in explaining the battle scenes, and seems to be more balanced in his admiration and criticism of Alexander then any of the other early biographers. I love his Bucephalus Story, and I recount it here so you get a flavor of the promise this young Alexander shows.

The legend begins with Philoneicus, a Thessalian, bringing a wild horse to Philip for him to buy. None of the hands was able to handle it, and Philip grew upset at Philoneicus for bringing such an unstable horse to him. Alexander, however, publicly defied his father and claimed that he could handle the horse. The bet between Philip and Alexander was that if Alexander could ride the horse, Philip would buy it, if not, Alexander would have to pay the price of the horse, which was 13 talents, an enormous sum for a boy of Alexander's age to have.

Alexander apparently noticed that the horse had been shying away from its own shadow, and so he led it gently into the sun, so that its shadow was behind it, all the while stroking it gently and whispering into its ear, (Alexander seems to be the original horse whisperer). Eventually the horse let Alexander mount him, and Alexander was able to show his equestrian skill to his father and all who were watching. The incident so impressed Alexander's father, King Philip that he told the boy "Look thee out a kingdom equal to and worthy of you, for Macedonia is too little for thee". He named the horse Bucephalus, which means Ox head, and rode it across Asia, founding a city in its honor in India after its death. This story gives you an inkling about the man.

This book is a must read for students of Alexander, I also recommend Plutarch's and Arrian's work. Contemporary writers, J.F. C. Fuller and Tarn. Most of Alexander's greatest military traits are in the area of military logistics and to understand his genius in this area I highly recommend reading, "Alexander the Great and the Logistics of the Macedonian Army," by Donald W. Engels.

As a retired U. S. Army Major, I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in ancient warfare, and history.

Excellent book that I can never forget when I took my state board Examination. Very good book.

This book is so well written in a language anyone can understand. It's not a book to be read from page to page although one can if one chooses. The author gently digs down into your heart and soul and guides you back out again to discover all the wonderful things in life that are available and most likely always have been. I enjoyed the book so much, I ordered copies for six of my friends.

In the preface I learned some things I didn't know about Vince Lombardi, Sr., the famous NFL coach, at 34 he was a high school coach, at 46 he was just one assistant coach among many. At 57 he was gone. He left a legacy, however and this book captures some of the wisdom that quickly took him from obscurity to fame.

His son, one of the coauthors, tells us "Success isn't in reading. It's in doing. It's in action." The issue of bouncing back after failure is included in the discussion. We're told it's integral to the process of achieving one's goals. True success is viewed as a lifestyle, not an event. Vince Jr. writes, "Change your belief and you will change your performance." He reminds us that his dad had to wait until he was 47 years old before he became a head coach.

These brief excerpts give just a glipse of the jewels in this wonderful book. Principles from the Bible are used throughout the whole work. Both authors are excellent at what they do. This book should be in the "positive thinking" section of any achiever's library.

Stephanie trys to impress a boy named Michael by letting him know a lot of things that aren't true. For Michael is a dreamboat. He knows a lot of things about movies.Then she finds herself right in a big puddle. She said she knew a famous rockstar. And the students want them to write a song for the class video. I liked this book because it described very well about Stephanie's feelings and also the story was fun.

The book is a collection of sketches from the perspective of a kid drawing his latest hero or show favorite. The comments written with each picture are classic 8-10 year old remarks - and some you might remember thinking yourself.This book brought back so many memories of TV legends when I was growing up. I bought the book because I found myself with a big smile remembering some of the icons I had forgotten about. And returning to the shelf to see if he included a character the book prompted me to recall. I thought some of my friends will get a kick out of this, and many have glanced through it commenting on how cool it is and borrowed it.

Baseball! Q&A is a great introduction to baseball history and rules for your younger gradeschooler (or precocious preschooler). Gary Drevitch's well-written text offers interesting facts about the origins of baseball and some of its greatest players. The photos are really nice as well. Highly recommended.

I have been using this book for the past two years. I teach A&P to students of Reflexology and Massage - we all find this book to be easy to use informative and well-priced.

I never would have thought of finding this book! But I did and its really great. Bought it for my boyfriend and he loves it. Gives tab as well as the notes and lyrics.
