What a refreshing perspective

Autism spectrum disorder (asd) is a disease that affects many people in our communities. The tricky part is that many of those people are not yet diagnosed, and many of them are kids. With asd, early intervention is critically important.

It can be difficult as a parent to find out what signs to look for in your child if you suspect things aren't quite right in his or her development. It can be even harder to figure out where to go for help and what questions to ask when you do go for help when you think your child might have asd.

Dr. Sanders is a rare resource for parents and families who have someone who is diagnosed with asd or someone who might have asd. He speaks not just as a doctor but also as a parent of a child with asd.

He raises the same questions many parents raise, and he provides both concrete information and guidance on how to navigate the waters of diagnosis, treatment options, advocating for your child in a school setting, and finding ways to help you help your child to lead a life connected to his or her community. He lets you as a parent have a sense of what to expect as your child grows older.

We are fortunate that Dr. Sanders has taken the time to write his findings and share his wisdom with the rest of us.

Thanks for multiple persectives

How to Talk to Parents About Autism
Where was this book 7 years ago? I am an RN who is the Grandparent of an 8 year old Grandson with Autism. I worked in a Pediatric Neurologist office. I saw the classic signs of problems with my Grandchild when he was 9 months old. I needed the ability to share with my daughter my concerns. Dr. Sanders is able to give clear concise information to the Professional, suggest anticipatory guidance of concerns to parents, and speak as a parent (often emotional). This book is a comforting assistance to those of us who have worked with children diagnosed with autism (ASD). Parents need to know that empathic and caring professionals who have walked in their shoes can give rational logical guidance of care for their child with ASD. I hope more parents will read and use many of his recommendations. Thank you for writing a book based on science (intellect) with a loving parental perspective (emotion).

Finally, a compassionate, concise voice for ASD!

Dr. Sanders' book is eminently readable. His use of the question and answer format, as well as each chapter's section of his own family experiences gives the clinician a unique, clear perspective on the steps along the path of a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.
This book is written with compassion. It gives the perspective of both a first-rate clinician and a parent of a child with autism.
I was both impressed and moved by Dr. Sanders' insight and expertise.

I. Q. is the pet rat of Mrs. Furber's class. But he longs to be much more. Along with the children, he is learning to count and spell. He has learned his colors, participated in the Thanksgiving play (a small role) and crafted Valentines. But the school year is soon ending and still I.Q. has not been named Student of the Week. What can he do to get Mrs. Furber's attention?

I.Q. wiggles his way into readers' hearts, and the book's illustrations delightfully document the goings-on of a classroom throughout the seasons.

This book was a joy to read! My second grader loved the story as it goes through the whole year with events relating to what she has learned in school this year. I.Q. is adorable as he wants to become a student not just the class pet. I.Q. learns about the alphabet, colors, numbers and holidays along with students. But more than anything, I.Q. wants to be picked for STUDENT OF THE WEEK. When will it be his turn? This book is a great read and it will surely be a favorite with your children as it is with mine.

Great book. Finally, after purchasing many psychiatry books, I settled with this one. Almost all of the questions in the exam are same except for dementias and "Neuropsych tests for Dementias". That has to be covered by you elsewhere otherwise you are all set for the Psych part of ABPN Neurology,

Make sure you give this to someone with a sense of humor, but it is a great gift if not taken seriously. If someone is expecting working voodoo here, this isn't intended for that purpose. It's just a comical way to say you understand when someone else is frustrated in the work place.

This book, simply put, is an absolute neccessity for all coin collectors. With Kenneth Bresset editing the book and Q. David Bowers narrating it, the book has to be awesome. It has, among many other things, The basic ANA Grading techniques, Key to official ANA Grading Standards: Circulation Strike Coins; Key to official ANA Grading Standards: Proof Coins, Advanced Grading Techniques, A closer focus on certain aspects of grading and the official ANA grading standards for each coin type. From AG-3 to MS-70. It also has notes that warn you about different things to look for in certain types of coins. Buy this book, you definately will not be disappointed.

Kudos to Mary Lane. Incidentally she was very popular at the recent CAEYC conference in Long Beach where many many teachers stopped by to say hi, and her older friends threw a reception for her. She is a remarkable 87 going on 110. This book distills the best research of the last fifty years on children from birth to five years old. I loved it when she says teachers must know the history and traditions of Education. So much of what passes for sound opinion in the current views on schools is just not grounded in the basics. Get this book! Educate yourself! Do it today! One great passage deals with the amount of time that elementary children spend lining up to go from one place to another throughout their time in a typical school day. As though they couldn't operate like regular humans. Go Dr. Lane!

Although I am not directly involved in acadmic teaching, Dr. Lane's book pulled me into her world of education. Her vision for improving teacher education should be adopted universally by all schools preparing students to enter the field of teaching. My daughter began teaching this year and is poignantly aware of the lack of preparation for the difficult task facing her. Sharing and discussing Dr. Lane's book has been an inspiration to her as she begins her journey of becoming knowledgable about herself and teaching.

Dr. Lane has done it again. For those who have known her work this is an wonderful gift to the profession from one who has worked with children, parents, and teachers for over fifty years. The research findings that she alludes to are so powerful that her notion that colleges and universities should recover the basic information of the forties and fifties is a much needed. It makes a lay person understand why all these fads (phonics vs whole words for instance) have no staying power. And the pictures are worth the price of the book in their beauty and power. I especially liked the "Friends" and the "Madonna and Child" (a photo by the great Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide. Thank you Mary Lane for your great effort.

You're curious about beautifull topics in math, but reading a classical texbook, browsing through a list of lemma and therorems just get you sleep ? Read this one. The idea behind theorems, and why and how they came alive are so nicely exposed that this book can replace your favorite bed time one.

I only wish I could give more stars...

This is the best introduction-level mathematics textbook I have ever read, and I have read (and own) many. Every theorem and definition is well-motivated, and problems for the reader are interspersed within the text to make sure that every subtle nuance of the exposition is understood. Though introductory, Gouvea manages to incorporate some relatively advanced topics, (as far as undergraduate mathematics goes) such as the Weierstrass Preparation Theorem, local rings, and analysis in C_p. All this and the topic at hand is fascinating to boot. p-adic numbers are perfect for anyone wishing to pick up an amazingly interesting topic not found in most undergraduate or graduate courses. In conclusion, I recommend this book to the set of people interested in p-adic numbers, and its complement.

This is a wonderful book for several reasons.

Review Date: 1999-12-28
This book really grabbed me on a number of points. First, in addressing a rather abstract topic (often not included in a basic undergraduate curriculum) it does a good job trying to compute concrete examples. It stays broad, as not to lose the reader on the messy details of any particular part of the theory. Hence the book is good even for students who are a little weak on their background. It is well-organized and exposed for an introductory-level text.

In particular, its proofs are rather clear, concise, and meaningful. There are only a couple points where Gouvea uses trickery (a la Rudin) to prove things, and he is honest enough to warn before they come. Indeed, the footnotes are quite entertaining, especially for one who has read enough math books to catch his jokes. Overall, the read is casual. It is good for independent reading.

The problems in the book are also worthy of praise. They are interspersed after proofs and in the middle of exposition, as ways to make sure the reader is following. Indeed, they are always pertinent and carefully planned. In addition, they point out ways in which mathematics authors often skip over details which the reader should actually verify for him/herself. Specifically, they perpare a student for reading graduate-level texts (which are notoriously full of this occurrence). Pedagogically, therefore, this is a very important tool, and useful book for a budding math student.

Finally, for the graduate student who wants to go down the path of p-adics, Gouvea does a good job of pointing the reader in the several different directions the literature can guide him/her. He gives references to other texts, giving just a taste of their contents, throughout. His eye towards further study is keen.

I must point out again that it is a joyful and entertaining read, in addition to being an exposition of a deeply fascinating (and deeply odd) area of math. This book, because of its clarity, its organization, its promotion of good mathematical reading skills, and its wonderful style occupies a spot on the very exclusive shelf of highest-quality texts in mathematics.

A "Screenwriting" book that tells how it really is...

I read, Q & A: The Working Screenwriter, in one sitting (and that's rare for me--I start a book, get bored, return or sometimes not) and then a few hours later I read it through again. Both reads were enjoyable experiences (and I've booked marked several pages for future reference). I especially like that fact that the writers interviewed were not of the Shane Black or Joe Eszterhas fame level. It's important to represent Hollywood for what it is: a town of working stiffs. Sure, the "names" get the ink, but it's the working screenwriter who slugs it out, makes a tolerable living, and has a solid career. The lessons from Q & A: The Working Screenwriter, are valuable and practical and underscore what it really takes to have a career in this business. Aspiring and established writers alike will pull something useful from this book.

The Working Screenwriter delivers answers to some of the questions that wander in the minds of hopeful screenwriters. As an aspiring screenwriter myself, I found this book enlightening, and entertaining as well. The diversity of perspectives from the panel of screenwriters is more valuable than most people realize. Jim Vines does know this value, and shares it with us, in this must read book for the novice and the professional as well.

This book really does answer all the questions that a young (and even an experienced) writer has about the nuts & bolts experience of writing and selling a movie today. As a story analyist, the information about the writing process and how it differs from person to person was very useful to me and the mechanics of selling as well. I now feel more sympathy for the screenwriters' whose scripts I read. I highly recommend this book.

I bought this book for our own bear, last Christmas. He never has insomnia, but was as delighted as his owners were to read this enchanting story, enjoying the dreamlike prose and illutrations. This book isn't just for children. It's for the child inside all of us, so that we never forget the magic and innocence of being young, and more importantly, that we never forget the importance of bears. Remember - look after you bear, whether you're 2 or 92.

An excellent bedtime story!

The comments from the Vermont reader match my feelings about Sleep Well, Little Bear exactly. The prose IS gentle, descriptive, and wonderful. The artwork, however, is so truly beautiful. I especially appreciated Buchholz's use of light. The text and the soft, easy, lovingly detailed pictures makes it a very lulling read. I'm keeping this for my (very) future grandchildren.

This is an truly lovable book. A little bear, in typical little boy style, can't quite get to sleep so he reviews his day of being a pirate on the river that flows past his house, and helping old Mrs Rose with her garden, and other wonders of a child's (and bear's) life. The prose is sweet and gentle and clever and lovely, but what really makes this book is the artwork--surreal, truly beautiful pictures of the circus clown playing his violin to put a baby elephant to sleep, and the little bear peering out his bedroom window at the moon, and the night musicians wandering through the meadow, and the deer in the mist. Buy it for yourself, lend it to your kids.

This is quite simply the best intro sociology text ever. The author is a fabulous writer and is well versed in the discipline of sociology. He no longer writes textbooks, and no one since has come close to being this informative and illustrative. Unlike most academic works, this one is not a chore to read, but a pleasure.

Still the best introduction to sociology text.

Review Date: 1999-10-19
Without a doubt, this is the best introductory sociology text in exisitence. Having taught sociology for many years I am quite familiar with many textbooks and thus I feel qualified to comment on this one.

Why do I like this book so much? Well, let's face it, most textbooks are dull and laborious to read. Robertson's SOCIOLOGY is actually a pleasure to read. It has fascinating details which keep the reader's interest, is easy to understand, and above all, the writing is so good that reading this book is enjoyable. Above all, Robertson is able to accomplish this without sacrificing intellectual rigor.

If it has a weakness, it is a little old now and some of the material is obviously out of date. However, despite it's 1987 publication date, most of this book is still relevant. Many texts try too hard to stay current, only to include issues and examples that quickly become "old hat" (Monican Lewinsky, O.J. Simpson, etc). But Robertson's text is a classic, and still worthy of a serious look both by professors and the general public.

Best Intro Sociology text ever

Review Date: 2004-10-01
Ian Robertson, please do a new edition. Without question, this is the "classic" Intro to Sociology text. It is extremely well written in an engaging conversational style that grabs ones attention and keeps it. I have been a Sociology professor for 25 years and this is the only Intro text I've ever read from cover to cover. Even though I use a different text for my students because of the outdated data contained in Robertson's text, the nuts and bolts of Sociology still comes from Robertson through my lectures. It is a must read.
