Stunning photos and essays

So I am a big fan of radical sportswriter Dave Zirin and his book did not disappoint. More than his essays and interviews on Ali, I was blown away by the color and black and white photos. Ali at a Palestinian rights demo? It's here. Ali with Martin Luther King? Malcolm X? It's here. Original interviews with Bob Lipsyte, Etan Thomas, and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad? It's here.

My only minor complaint is that the serious SERIOUS Ali fan will know many of the stories Zirin tells. But others will be blown away.

A rather remarkable - and affordabe - hardcover book, it's everything the $10,000 GOAT book should have been.

A forgotten star of the silent movie era
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-13
Muriel Ostriche was a teen-ager when she started working as a movie extra and then a starlet in early silent films filmed in the New York area. In 1913, she came in second in a fan magazine poll for the most popular movie actresses. She continued her career making a film a week at Thanhouser until the studio manager Charles Hite was killed in an automobile accident. The studios backers had no idea how to run the place, and Thanhouser was out of business in a couple of years. Miss Ostriche continued to work as an actress until 1921, when she ended her career due to marriage and motherhood. She was also famous as the spokesperson for the Moxie soft drink for five or six years.

Ostriche is an actress that nobody today has ever heard of. Author Q. David Bowers was researching Moxie in the 1980s when he stumbled apon a huge cache of magazine articles on Ostriche. He did some investigating and found that she was actually still alive. He spent some time interviewing her, and this book was the result. Amazingly, most of Ostriche's film work has been lost, but at least one film, THE DECOY (1914), has been discovered since the book was written.

If a book could ever be too detailed, Mr Bowers has almost done it. He has reviews and plotlines for all of her 100+ films, plus a filmography at the back of the book. It is lavishly illustrated with photos from the films and studio backlot photographs, as well as trade publication advertisements. He really gives you a sense of Ms. Ostriche's personality through the magazine articles and his interviews. Ms. Ostriche's story is also the story of Thanhouser films, which quickly collapsed after Mr. Hite died. One of Ostriche's best friends, Florence LaBadie, also died tragically in a car accident, probably because seat belts had not been invented yet.

If you are a newcomer to silent films, this book is probably too detailed for you. If you are already a silent film fan, especially of actresses, you'll love this book.

Alphabetical fun with the letter "o"

"My 'o' Sound Box," written by Jane Belk Moncure, is a fun book for beginning readers. Colin King's humorous, colorful illustrations complement the simple story.

In the book, a little boy known simply as "o" rounds up a group of animals, all of whose name's begin with the letter "o": octopus, otters, ostrich, etc. He takes them home for some play time.

Although all of the "o" words in the main story have a short "o" pronunciation, the author includes a supplement of words that begin with an "o" that is pronounced long: okra, opal, ocean, etc. Each word has an accompanying illustration.

The author and illustrator do an effective job of focusing on a single letter of the alphabet. This book is both entertaining and educational.

I really enjoyed this series of essays. Most importantly, I found her articulation of class and the effects of that on herself in relation to her family the words that I have been looking for, but never able to form....Overall, it was an excellent read.

Great book for young kids about computers
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-25
I've always been searching for good books for my kids about computers, and it's difficult to find ones that actually have technical details. For example, how many books are there designed to teach younger kids the basics of programming? If you want to teach them programming, most of the time you have to use a boring, adult book. At any rate, this book is great, it talks about binary code, pixels, computer chips, computer history, all in a way that make it interesting for a 7 year old (or a little older or younger). This is the best book I have ever been able to find for this age group - it is full of information and assumes that the child is not stupid, but rather, that they are actually intelligent and want to learn all sorts of interesting facts about computers. There are 64 pages of information, all narrated by a character named "Bialosky Bear". There are plenty of pictures and activities. The only drawback is that the disk is one of those old 5 1/4 floppies, because the book was written in 1991. Don't let that stop you, though - the computer fundamentals the book teaches are not outdated by todays standards. If only there were more books for kids just like this one.
