13 years later and weight still off

I struggled with my weight especially after having a child 16 years ago. I am a registered dietitian so that made it even more humiliating--knowing what I should be doing, but not being able to do it. I picked up an earlier edition of this book 13 years ago and it changed my life. I walked 6 days a week religiously. I felt the diet was very easy to follow and loved some of the recipes in the book. After 3 years and 40 pounds later, I started running and have been running ever since. Thank you Choose to Lose for transforming my life. I love who I have become.

Hopeless..not any more!

This is the only plan that has ever worked for me. I had always been vastly overweight and tried every diet. Just do it..it works even without salads and exercise and you are not hungry. You choose your weight with every decision on what goes into your mouth. Just do it.

I read this books years ago, and when I found out the book was revised I had to have it. This book teaches you how to make a healthy eatting change for life, or just to lose those unwanted pounds. It tells you the importance of why you should not avoid carbohydrates, and it is very easy because you choose what you eat to loose weight, as long as you dont exceed your daily calorie or fat intake per day. It also teaches you why on 1000 caloried diets dont work because your body think it s starving and you dont loose weight because of so few calories. You can also save up for splurges. I think the hardest part in following this diet is eatting more than I am use to, when most diets you hardly eat. If interested in a positive eatting change where you can eat what you want, lose weight, drop your cholesterol level, and make this change for life, this is the book for you, I just love it, and the new me, because of it. Thank you Ron & Nancy Goor M.D. and Katherine Boyd R.D. for writing and sharing this book.

Having been on every diet in the world,I finally came to my own conclusion that diets simply don't work. I was delighted to find that "Choose To Lose" not only agrees, but encourages you not to weigh yourself and simply eat generous amounts of good, whole, naturally low fat nutritious food. Since I threw my scale out and began following the basic guidelines of "Choose To Lose", I've lost weight, gained back my self-respect and have enormous energy with a steady stable mood throughout the day. Throw out all your diet books and choose to live right now!!

The day after I bought it my boss asked me to build a priority matrix. I didn't bat an eyelash. I went back to my desk and 15 minutes later I emailed him a priority matrix for our project. He had a meeting in the conference room 15 minutes later with the director and partner. They were so impressed with my work. Thanks Memory Jogger II.

This book is set up for anyone to have many tools for them to use at anytime. It has flowcharting, public speaking, many diagrams, and several team based exercises to help become better. In the front of the book it has a tool selector, and it takes some of the guess work out of tool selection. This is just one of many great books this company offers. Our copmany uses several of these in our professional training with our clients. This is a really good book for those looking for continuous improvement. The Memory Jogger Plus is an excellent book also and has many great tools and other goodies.

BEST I'VE READ

Review Date: 2001-12-14
Books like these are used for reference and do there job well but this book is different. Its fun to read for somebody who is into business. Why? Well because it is so up-to date, features ad campaigns that are still in magazines, refers to interesting real life examples and case studies from large multinational businesses to small family firms.

Its written well, it highlights the main points on the sides of the page for quick reference but the only criticism is the index isn't very well laid out but you get used to it.

I honestly find my self reading the case studies when i'm bored, so this is like a fiction/ reference book.

On the reference front it contains pretty much everything you need to know for an introduction to undergraduate marketing but be warned it doesn't go that much further. If you are studying for a course which goes into great depth about marketing this isn't for you, it just covers all the basic aspects. Layout is great and the book itself is quite bulky, so its best not to carry around.

I have also got the European edition which is very good, the case studies are different and its slightly smaller and much much cheaper. The cost of this book is astronomical, but it could be the difference between getting a good grade or a mediocre one.

Complete, Credible, Readable Marketing Masterguide

Despite being nearly 1000 pages long, this is one book that I often travel with on business, due to the completeness and accessibility of the content.

This encyclopedic, incredible resource includes chapters and many case studies on:

* the marketing process: marketing in a changing world- satisfying human needs; marketing and society- social responsibility and ethics; strategic marketing planning.

* the marketing setting: the marketing environment; the global marketplace; market information and research.

* buyer behaviour- consumer markets; business markets; and buyer behaviour.

* core strategy- market segmentation and targeting; positioning; building customer satisfaction through quality, value and service; creating competitive advantage: competitor analysis; and marketing strategies.

* product- designing products- new product development and lifecycle strategies; designing products- products, brands, packaging and services; marketing services.

* price- pricing policies- considerations and approaches; pricing products- strategies.

*promotions- promoting products- communications & promotion strategy; promoting products- advertising, sales promotion and PR; promoting products- personal selling and sales management;

* place- placing products- distribution channels & logistics management; placing products- retailing and wholesaling,.

It's well written, well supported with references, attractively illustrated, and easy to read at chapter level down to sidebar level (I've never read from end to end in one sitting!). The only complaint, is that because of the broad and deep coverage beyond traditional marketing, newer breaking ideas are not covered.

Overall highly recommended, particularly with a slimmer latest "fad" business/ technology/ marketing book to confirm that you are not missing anything that may add value to your organisation or clients.

I haven't taken the registry exam yet, but for those looking for a good book to review, I recommend this one. I haven't made it through the whole book yet, but there are a lot of questions with such detailed explainations for every section. The questions are difficult, but I have been told by numerous people that these questions are harder than that of the actual ARRT exam. There are questions designated to each section, way more than what the real test will be, but the end of the book contains 2 practice tests combining all of the sections. VERY HELPFUL!

With this book comes free access to an online testing web site. This online, create-your-own exam feature is what got me through the registry test. It allows you to select any number of questions (there are more than 1,400!), from any of the 5 main categories (and the myriad sub-categories), those you've already seen or not seen, or to use only the ones you've previously gotten wrong. And you can use the web site as many times as you need to during your allotted access time (details with the book.) The author was very responsive to my questions when I needed clarification, and there's a link right on the web site making it easy to ask.

Unlike other test-prep resources I've seen, the questions are equal to or HARDER than those on the registry exam! The service tracks your averages in each of the five categories, and reports results for an individual exam upon completion as well as your cumulative average. You can interrupt taking an exam and resume it at another time. And, speaking of time, your test results also include how long it took you to complete your custom-made exam, as well as the average number of seconds per question. The registry exam is timed, so knowing your time in advance can help you focus where you need to.

I could go on, but you've got the picture by now: I can't say enough about the positive contribution this resource made to my success!

When industry leaders such as Cem Kaner and Bret Pettichord extol the virtues of this book you can be assured that it is great - everything they and other reviewers have said is on target. Moreover, you'd be hard-pressed to walk into the testing area in any company and not see a copy of this book on someone's desk.

That said, instead of this book you should get the second edition, which is a major rewrite, and also expanded in scope to include testing mobile systems. This edition is titled, "Testing Applications on the Web: Test Planning for Mobile and Internet-Based Systems" ISBN 0471201006, and is everything others have said about this first edition - and more!

Even with a better second edition, this book deserves the five stars I gave it because of the influence it has had on the testing profession. Moreoever, this first edition is not out-of-date, and is still a great book if you don't need information about testing mobile web systems at this time (although it's a safe bet you will in the future).

Superb introduction to the complexities of web testing
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 26 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-28
I have been in web testing for 3.5 years and this was the first book I found on the subject. My only complaint is that it took so long to come out, but I won't hold that against Nguyen or Wiley. It is a superb introduction to the complexities of web testing, which despite the protests of standalone application testers, is much more difficult and technical than traditional application testing. Not only does the tester need to know the basics of application testing, he or she has to know about the complex technology behind the site or application, and Nguyen's book is unbeatable. I've recommended that everyone on my team read it, since they are all new to the art of web testing. I read it cover to cover and it didn't really cover anything I had not learned in 3.5 years of experience, but had it been published when I started, I would have been able to ramp up so much faster. I also recommend that application developers read it in order to understand the role of a tester and to develop professional respect for a much-maligned profession.

Grey Box Testing for Web Applications
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 24 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-13
Grey box testing is based on a general understanding of a system's architecture and components. This understanding drives test strategy and identifies opportunities to test components in isolation.

The shade of grey can vary from white box testing (full review of source code) to black box testing (no review of source code). You choose what level of information to gather depending on your budget, capabilities and judgment.

This book provides the first detailed approach to grey box testing, focussing on web-based application architectures. These architectures are based on a heavy use of components: application servers, web servers, load balancers, databases and the like. This book describes these components, suggests how they can fail and what you can do to anticipate, trigger, or detect such failures.

This approach is supported by the author's extensive experience testing web-based (and other) applications as president of a software testing company. It is augmented by plenty of good advice on how to communicate test results clearly.

A strong introduction to a new field

This is good book. If you test web apps, you should buy it.

Hung Nguyen and I are co-authors of another book and good friends. I am not an unbiased reviewer. On the other hand, I wouldn't write this review if I didn't believe every word of it.

Hung's book breaks new ground. It will be useful today, and I believe it will have lasting value and influence.

Once you get beyond the superficial (not unimportant, but much less difficult) issues of usability testing that dominate so many discussions of web testing, you run into the really tough problems of web application testing. Hung Nguyen's book is about those harder problems.

The web-based application runs on a wider range of platforms than any other type of program in history. It doesn't even have control over its presentation layer (the user supplies the browser and the multimedia plugins, and these applications might change any time). What will the application look like on the changed browser? The application probably also relies on third party databases (which can change any time), third party network connections (which can change any time), third party security systems and other access control (which can change any time), etc., etc. Almost anything in this system can change any time. How do you deal with a system that has so many unknowns?

Hung's view is that web application testers must learn more about the technical details of the systems and understand how external variables can interact (and fail) with the application under test.

To help testers learn about the interaction (and testing) of applications with other system components, he wrote the field's first book on grey box testing.

This book has substantial value for what it teaches us about testing on the web. Beyond that, it teaches about thinking clearly and thoroughly when your application interacts in complex ways with other systems. I think his approach will have lasting value and lasting influence long after many of the detailed issues that he describes have been resolved and replaced with new ones.

Along with the original approach, Hung gives a powerful real-world example. He is the president of a company that publishes a web-based bug tracking system. To illustrate the types of tests that you can run and the types of bugs you can find, he opened his records and described real tests, real bugs, and real testing problems. It's a rare treat to see a discussion of testing experience by someone who knows testing, who also intimately knows the software under test, and who isn't constrained in what he can say by a nondisclosure contract.

Poignant is the word that comes to mind when I think of Quim Hickman's Vignettes of War. A hero who didn't choose to be a hero, medic Hickman saves lives and takes us with him as he follows his fellow foot soldiers into battle. Mr. Hickman paints vivid scenes and touches my heart with his wisdom on war and the men who had to be there, whether they want to be there or not. Well-worth reading. Real without too much graphic gore.

World War II Remembered

Review Date: 2003-03-27
I really enjoyed this very well written book. While reading it, I felt as though I was actually part the action - going from battle to battle, cris to crisis. I learned a lot about the life of the medics and the riflemen who were on the front lines in World War II. This is a book about ordinary soldiers and what they had to deal with. For this reason, I found it particularly meaningful. Especially now, with our men and women fighting a shooting war in a foreign county, it is important to remember that underneath all the movie-draped glamour "war is hell." Probably because Hickman's book is based on the notes he made during and shortly after his active duty, he manages to keep the focus on the realities of war and battles and the day- to-day hassles soldiers face. The book made me realize how important and truly heroic each and every soldier can be simply by managing to cope with another day of war - which is not at all a simple or easy task.

Vignettes of War is an intensely interesting and exciting account of a small section of the fight for Europe in World War II. The book tells of the lives of infantrymen in combat in France, Germany, and Holland from the point of view of a medic who served with them in the same unit. Mr. Hickman based his book on notes he made in the early years after his return from the European theatre, and the story is as fresh as if it had happened yesterday. He writes with immediacy of cowardice and extraordinary heroism, of terror and boredom, of the horror, excitement, valor, and humor of the battlefield, and of the men whose lives he saved, and of those he couldnýt save. His book is well worth reading whether the reader is a World War II aficionado or not.

The color of war

Review Date: 2003-04-16
I have read no book about World War II like "Vignettes of War." It colors war as it truly is, all gray. The heroes, the cowards, the reluctant and the eager are all lumped together in the psychotic amorphous lump of war. As a combat veteran myself, I can attest that every page, every paragraph rings of the chilling truth. Here we have a purblind, morbidly skinny 18-year-old kid who is sent overseas by mistake (his eyesight is so poor, he is exempt from combat). They make him an untrained, unarmed medic (medics were not permitted carry arms) and unarmed he single-handedly captures two German snipers, rallies a group of doubtful soldiers to advance against the enemy, volunteers to go rescue wounded under fire. Hickman does the unbelievable and writes about it in the most believable way. Every page of the way, the book reveals the humor and modesty of the man as he is led into heroism by his overpowering sense of duty. For once the right man is rewarded: he gets the Silver Star for bravery and the Purple Heart for wounds in action. There are lots of World War II remembrances. But I caution you. When you set about reading Quim Hickman's "Vignettes of War," keep your lunch and dinner nearby because you will stick to its pages like crazy glue right up until the words "The End."

A Timely War Book!

Review Date: 2003-04-04
Having never been in combat, I was utterly fascinated reading Vignettes of War. Quim Hickman's book concerns itself with the daily lives of riflemen as they experience the uncertainties and terrors of war. Most faced the front lines with valor and strength. A few faced them with cowardice. Hickman details their reactions, as well as his own.

Hickman was an untrained medic during World War II. He stumbled into the position because his vision was poor. But by ministering to the riflemen who were wounded, he formed a bond with many of them. Because he was so close to them, he was able to write about soldiers like Shorty Roberts, who took a powerful Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) away from a soldier immobilized by fear and used it to stop enemy fire. He saw which litter bearers were willing to risk their lives for fallen riflemen. He saw which soldiers faked illness or hid out in an outhouse with trousers pulled up in order to avoid combat. But mostly he saw and recorded numerous instances of outstanding valor by soldiers who probably were never rewarded with a medal because an officer was not there to observe their heroic acts.

This book makes me grateful to all the soldiers of every war we have fought, including the present one.

This book has great pictures and answered all of my questions re bluebirds. I love the pictures of the different nest types...it has enabled me to know what kind of bird is nesting in the bluebird box. Very helpful.

A good start

This is a good book for those who are interested in learning more about bluebirds and perhaps getting started with their own trail. It is mostly focused on the eastern bluebird but also discusses the mountain and western bluebirds, with plenty of photos. It also shows how to distinguish different types of nests so you can tell whether a house wren or house sparrow has taken over your bluebird box.

GOOD USEFUL STUFF HERE FOLKS! ONE OF THE BEST STARTER BOOKS I'VE READ!

This is certainly one you will want to add to your collection. Having been a birder for well over fifty years now, and a collector of books on the subject, I found this one to be well worth the cost. As pointed out by another reviewer here, some of the information in this book is quite basic. But that is okay! Everyone has to start somewhere and this is one of the best books I know to get that start. This is not to say that an "expert" will not be able to get anyting out of this work...that is silly. But, like any work on the subject of birds, this one needs to be supplemented by other books on the subject and field guides.

The photographs in this work are wonderful, some of the best I have seen and the text is clear and concise, which is sort of a trade mark for this writing team. There is a great amount of useful information in this relatively small volume, and with it, and a couple of the other recommended works here, you should be able to become quite an authority on the subject. This particular bird is a favorite of mine and I find any work that promotes it's well being a good thing. Recommend this one highly.

Once you have a bluebird visit your backyard, you WILL be hooked...and you'll start looking for anything and everything to lure them back--it sounds crazy, but I think every bluebirder started this way! I read just about everything I could find about them on the internet, and you can find tons of information there, but sometimes I'd rather consult a book or two--The Bluebird Book is one of my two.

Actually it is pretty basic, and I thought it was too basic at times, but the further I read there was still a lot of good information about bluebird behavior, feeding habits, preferred habitat, nesting, nest boxes, predators of the bluebird, predator prevention, and what I didn't see anyplace else...bluebird language! But I think what kept me reading was the fantastic photographs--the photos will draw you in, and if you weren't too serious about doing the 'bluebirding thing', you will be after starting with this book. What it lacks in "complete reference" will certainly prompt you to take the next step of getting another more advanced book, pouring thru bluebird internet sites, or setting up a nest box or two in your yard. Just a note--depending on where you live in the US, parts of this book may not apply--but that is the same for other bluebird books also; don't get discouraged over it. Most bluebird books cover Eastern, Western, and Mountain bluebirds all at once, and what works in the east, may not work in the west, or south, for example.

The other book that goes into great detail on just about everything bluebird related is the Bluebird Monitor's Guide. This should be your next book if you can find it. Excellent stuff, expands on what you learned in the Bluebird Book, and lists many lessons and lessons-learned, easy and hard, from average folks who became very passionate about bluebirds.

After starting with the Bluebird Monitor's Guide, The Bluebird Book filled in a few areas and had some good detailed photos. And all the photos will have you wishing to have these beauties grace your neighborhood. Another note--there's also a Stokes video about bluebirding...I haven't seen it, but much of what I've read about it online is not very positive. Stick with this book and the Monitor's Guide and you will have plenty of solid information about bluebirds, setting up PROPER nest box(es), and providing a safe environment for a bluebird family, or any native wildbird family for that matter. Please be a responsible bird landlord!

I was amazed at how easily Aline Kominsky Crumb seems to open up to the reader in this plump autobiography. You can tell when you first pick up this hefty book, that Aline has alot to say about her life, her loves, and her work. Even though I'm not a Jewish girl from the "guyland" (as she says it), I found her characters easy to relate to. Highly recommended!!

Strange, funny, entertaining.

This is a good one to flip through - strange and funny. It's also quite revealing but I like the lighthearted tone of the author and I never know this much about her, though I knew a bit about Crumb. Can be kind of crude, but you should see that coming if you've seen Crumb...

I have always loved and looked forward to Aline K-C's work. She is about 11 years older than me and everything she goes through, well, a few years later, I go through it too! I think of her as a kind of sister, preparing me for the road ahead.

In this large and slightly unwieldy book, she gives us autobiographical data that might not go down too well with your average nerd-boy in the USA, even though this stuff she goes through and talks about are important aspects of a woman's life that every man who has interest in precisely one half of the planet's residents should get a feel for, at least!

She shows us her more recent artwork and it is wonderful! She has really changed what she does and it is magnificent work. She's always done collages but not quite like the ones she shows us in this book! I could feel my art lust welling within my breast. She's got a pretty good life right now and has done some extensive traveling in recent years, and this has been very good not only for her artwork but for her worldview. I'm glad this has happened for her, and have always believed that in some ways this woman far outstrips her mate.

Get it. It is very interesting and very amusing. Sacre Blu! Old Blabette is still alive and making her periodic appearances not only in Aline's strips but her granddaughter Sophie's as well, and believe me, that kid can draw and has a very level headed, healthy view of this world. It will be interesting to see where the kid goes in the time to come.

Get it. You can't be bored with it, between the pictures and the texts you will get many hours of amusement out of it.

Fascinating, compelling reading for anyone interested in the Crumb clan. Her comics and writing outline the genuine, brave human experience much like her famousse life partner - what's great is that Aline comes at it from a more, hopeful and joyous vantage point.. She's her own person as well as R.C's girlfriend.

There is so much to discover here, including the occasional mention of Justin Green who is another fantastic auto-biographical comics-author (hey guys, check out Joe Matt and Debbie Dreschler too!). You really get the impression that you know Aline after reading this and want to acknowledge her thoughts, experiences, feelings.. I can also identify with her 'ugly' drawing style which is prominent here.. Many intimate moments are made public with total candour and honesty. In the end you'll better for reading it so Woo, you go get it bubulleh!!

There's nothing more appealing than when an unapologetic woman lets her big appetite hang out!

It's a thrill to see these stories, some of which have been parceled out to us piecemeal over the years, collected in one volume, with Aline's artwork, photographs, words lending further context and depth. It's so heavy, I'm afraid it'll fall off the shelf and crush me in my sleep! Actually, there are plenty of worse ways to go...

Much as I love her #1 husband's "aht", as far as I'm concerned, Aline's no second banana. She's the whole dang Bunch!

I don't care what the cover says, this book is not just for healthcare professionals...Can be enjoyed by everyone. I highly recommend!

Very, very funny!! I also sent a copy to my cousin who's doing her residency in Ohio - she can't stop talking about it! If there were any issues I had with the book it's that they should have more nursing topics. Also why don't they update their website more often?? Otherwise, highly recommended if you or someone you know is in the medical field.

This book is awesome! I'm a third year medical student and have been following Qfever for the past couple of years. They used to have a lot of issues but now it's like three or four a year. Sigh. The book keeps me company during those long nights on Surgery. I also gave it as a gift to some friends and they love it! Crazy stuff. Get it!
