This is a really easy-to-read book with dozens and dozens of terrific tips. She sets down some general guidelines, gives "dos" and "don'ts" about writing and proofreading your messages, and also tells you how to manage your inbox. It's perfect for the workplace--it tells you how your work team should handle e-mail, and gives general business etiquette advice. You can read it in one sitting, and you can easily find stuff in the index. (Books this short usually don't have indexes! It's a big plus.)

Forecasting the future is very important
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-30
It is important to predict the future because times are changing so fast that we can no longer prosper by using old responses to future events; we need better information about tomorrow. Although this 1983 book is dated and many of the forecasts are no longer helpful, it is still useful as the techniques and approaches have not changed. "The trends that help to shape national events are always influenced by a country's vital signs, which are just as important and just as easy to check as the blood pressure, temperature and pulse of a person. The vital signs to look for in a country are the signs that indicate political, economic and social stability. These signs include a country's birth rate, how it takes care of injustice, its treatment of dissidents, its relations with the press, the frequency with which it changes commercial regulations and goes out on strike, where it sends its elite to be educated, what it pays in salaries to its military officers. The most stable country in the world is Sweden, where the uppermost tenth, make two and one half times what the lowest tenth earn. Using income difference as a guideline, the unstable countries in the world are Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Argentina, where the upper tenth earn more than 40 times what the lower tenth makes. Iran fell in part because the earnings in the upper tenth rose to where they were 38 times what the lowest tenth earned." Other factors contributing to Iran's fall were the high unemployment rate of young males who were the backbone of the revolution that broke the Shah.

Cetron is a professional forecaster whose work is based on the analysis of trends and indicators, synthesis of data and the extensive use of computers; he tells us how Forecasting International predicted the fall of the Shah of Iran, unrest and instability in Poland, the coup d'etat in Turkey, political changes in India, the warlike position of Iraq, and the 1973 Arab oil embargo. This book is about forecasting a crisis before it becomes a crisis and anticipating trends and developments in fields as diverse as medicine and religion. The value of the book is not the success of the forecasting but in drawing attention to problem areas; where important trends are well established and irreversible, the success rate of forecasting improves.

The chapter 'Religions of the Future' points out that Southern Baptists and Mormons are the fastest growing while Presbyterians, Lutherans and Methodists are losing members. The least liberal, the least tolerant religion in the world is now the fastest growing religion in the world. There are 450 million Moslems worldwide and in America there are twice as many Moslems as there are Presbyterians. Until recently, Americans believed in family ties, traditional religion, sexual restraint, the work ethic, free enterprise and the natural superiority of the American way. Almost all of these old values have been challenged first in literature, then in behavior and school curricular. "This process of change has seriously affected young people. They do not get clear guidance when they look to the adult world for fundamental values. Young people are particularly receptive to the appeal of new nonestablishment groups which offer a ready-made sense of community and an idealistic world view providing clear rules of daily conduct and purpose in life."

While this book may no longer be worth the investment, up-to-date books on forecasting the future and futuring are definitely worth reading if we are to anticipate how the future will unfold.

This remains a wonderful resource, despite its being published in 1970. The work contains a plethora of case studies, advice, and observations that are still quite relevant in this day and age. Grab one up if you get the chance. You won't go wrong.

Expanded "Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith."
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-24
My first thought was that this book was a one-volume version of Histroy of the Church!
Unike "Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith," which is a collection of Joseph Smith's talks, "EJST" is a topical "quote book" compilation of Joseph Smith's teachings. The good is that it is easier to find what Joseph Smith said on a subject. The bad is that the context and the flow of the Prophet's logic is lost, so I use this book in conjuction with "Teachings." For example: the King Follet Discourse gets pretty hacked up by ellipses, But that is the hazard of having a "quote book," along with having someone else do your editing for you.

Some of the extras that are included in this book are eight accounts of the First Vision, and the poetic version of Section 76-"The Vision." The Editors also include reminisces from "They Knew the Prophet," and quotes from Journal of Discourses, when Church leaders quoted something the Prophet said that is not recoded elswhere. It is wonderful to see these gems get broader circulation, and hopefully, they will begin to percolate into our Sunday Schoool lessons and into our lives.

The biggest compliment that I have is that I teach Sunday School lessons with this book.

My only complaint is that there were some reminisces found in "Discourses of Wilford Woodruff," and one or two other quotes from Joseph Smith that would have been nice to include in the book. And it would have been nice to see the Wentworth letter in an appendix. But it is a thick enough book as it is.

Despite my one or two criticsms, this is a great book. Five stars!

This Gem Should Be A Classic

Other books tend to get better publicity regarding the events of 1066 in England but few are as good as this one. Most books detailing events of 1066 tend to make conclusions about the different personalities motives that defy common sense and often leave the reader more frustrated than enlightened. Tetlow's, on the other hand enlightens the casual reader and scholar. This book has good prose, great information and excellent conclusions from intelligent reasoning. Tetlow is one of the few writers to clearly explain the affect the geography of the land had on the different battles and is convincing in his arguments.

Tetlow also lets you know what level of certainty modern researchers can use various sources. Certainly modern writers can't know with certainty what motivated each of the main individuals in this important period of history but Tetlow does a good job of trying. He makes the wise decision to not impose 20th century values on 11th century people, and he neatly interprets ancient values so the modern reader can understand what went on and why.

I've read more than 20 books on the subject and if I were going to read just one book on the events of 1066 then this is the one. It's a great unappreciated book.

Concrete and convincing, this is the best objective critique of organized religion I have ever come across. A really important work of research and writing. I really mean it when I say it changed my life. I am so pleased to see that it is still in print! If I could, I would give a copy to every person I know.
