I don't know about you all but when I read a book like this, I want to know how to make counterfeit documents. This book will not help you there. I recommend Max Forge's book (also available here on Amazon). It's about making Fake IDs but the techniques described can easily be applied to manufacturing other counterfeit documents.

Forging for Dummies

Review Date: 2004-03-23
In the introduction, John Q. says a good quality forgery is almost never detected by people who commonly examine identification documents. The four characteristics that make for a good quality forgery are: that the forged document bears a close resemblance to the real document; that all the numbers appearing on a real document appear on the forgery; that all seals, stamps and signatures on the real document are also on the forgery and that the paper used for the fogery is identical to the paper used for the real document. Then he tells you how. It may not always be high tech, but there is definitely an artistry to it. This is interesting reading. Kind of gets you wondering just what makes forgers tick. He gives you the names of companies that provide products one could use for such an endeavor, but warns you away from companies that actually make forged documents. Almost like anyone doing this would be better off doing it themselves. He covers some cross referencing, and tells you some things you need to look out for. Really interesting information. This is good reading. I tend to be one of those people who probably has more curiosity than is good for her, but just because I like reading about this stuff, doesn't mean I'm going to be a forger. Check out this publisher. Lots of strange books. Loompanics site or 8003802230

If I'd had this book before I sold my car, I wouldn't have had my identity stolen. Author John Q gives an overview of identity thieves that lets you know what areas you need to look out for. Also gives you information on the tedious follow up while you try to repair the damage done--who to contact, what to say or write. This is a real good book for the average person who is just trying to protect their privacy. I hope Loompanics has him write more on this subject. I checked with them, but although there is more in the way of privacy books, no other identity theft books come close to this for clear, concise information.

This book very informative in dealing with the identity theft that is present in the US which is what I was interested in. However, I did noticed it was lacking in content when dealing with other countries. For this one needs to apply previous knowledge of local systems to understand what Newman is describing. For anyone interested in Identity theft I recomend this for a once over lightly te get a quich understanding on a large topic. This book is suitable for the general public who may know very little about this crime. However, there really is no new information to be gleaned from the book.

The Finest Scholarship by the Finest Scholar We Have

Review Date: 2007-05-02
I have just finished James M. Robinson's new book - Jesus According to the Earliest Witnesses - and it is a treat.

Not only is it the culmination of the study and research of arguably the most well-rounded and dedicated scholar of this genre, but it is also a memoir of the path he followed. Born in 1924, he was on the cusp of modern New Testament studies. From youth till the present his interest and study led him to incredible knowledge and acumen on the subject. He states his chronologies flatly without embellishments but the stories are amazing, both in the casual disclosure of his multilingual abilities, his doggedness in getting things done and penchant for doing what needed to be done when no one else would. So much of the infrastructure of early Christian studies was created or enhanced by him. At the time he was Professor of New Testament and Theology at the School of Theology at Claremont, he founded the Institute for Antiquity and Christianity of which he became director. He doggedly perused the papyri of the Nag Hammadi in the hands of government in Egypt till he was able to photograph the intact pages for translation. Then he was able to unwrap the boondoggle that had tied up the remaining fragments, involved waiting, and anxious scholars and freed the text to the waiting world.

I have long been a follower of his work and I have ephemera from his lectures and career but this book is the best. It is a compilation of writings from various points in his career. The insight he has gained on the subject-Jesus According to the Earliest Witnesses-is deep and rich.

A yes-nonsense book about "Gospel Q"
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 24 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-13
The author of this book believes that a certain sayings collection was used as a source behind the Biblical Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke - and he is trying to piece it together here in very scholarly ways using the Jesus' sayings mentioned in them - not forgetting to add loads of contemplation, of course!

I didn't like this book. Solely recommended to all those heavenly academic scholars who never really found a way out of their own school. -The introduction of this book begins with the words: "The earliest witness to Jesus is not a person whose name we could name, but rather a collection of his sayings...". And for those willing to see some forgotten sayings of Jesus I personally recommend a book called "The Muslim Jesus" by Tarif Khalidi, which contains over 300 sayings from ancient Islamic sources.

More feminist banter

Newton has no concept of reality. This collection is nothing but more feminist banter standing upon a foundation of pagan thought at a teenage comprehension level.

Whether you find yourself rooting with liberals or conservatives there is no level of scholarship to be found anywhere the truth has been subdued.

Her Own Best Informant

Review Date: 2001-02-19
Esther Newton is an extremely gifted thinker and writer. She points up important issues for gender studies in a clear and compelling, and still quite groundbreaking, style. This book works very diligently and successfully at several levels: as a historical narrative of the trajectory of Newton's life and career; as a theoretical discourse which is situated specifically by her historical narrative; as a critique of and a profound contribution to her profession, anthropology; as a powerful argument for the inevitable relationship between theory and history; as a courageous and provocative piece of scholarship.

Many of these essays were written early in the second wave of feminism, so the issues they engage point up the degree to which Newton has been ahead of her time. That she narrativizes the essays as the historical life of an academic (herself) attests to the fact that she is still ahead of her time: everything-- political, academic, social, sexual--is lived. There are no categories which happen outside of the people who make them.

Because of Newton's autobiographical, comfortable style, it should be noted that the book, although clearly academic, is a fairly easy read.

Good journalist's view of American Military in Berlin
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-19
Bering wrote an excellent summary of the American Forces in Berlin from a journalist's point of view. It is not comprehensive, because, as in most journalism, there is heavy emphasis on the experience of the relative handful of people who were cooperative interviewees. A thorough history would require input form a lot of sources such as this book.
Interviews were heavily dominated by mid and upper level officers, which is a good start, since, after all, they determined policy; however, a lot of what happened involved us lower ranks - e.g. Checkpoint Charlie behind the desk (been there), mission cars (had some great conversations with some of those people - scarry sometimes) - only touched on in this book, interfaces with Russians (Somebody I knew actually asked the daughter of a "Starshina" - First Sergeant/ Sergeant Major equivalent - for a date. Needless to say, her father stopped that rather quickly.), the guy who removed some bricks from the Wall (our side, obviously. He wasn't THAT crazy.) while the East Germans looked on (that was surreal, to say the least), etc.
This is a great summary, though.

Good overview of the US Forces presence in Post-war Berlin

Review Date: 1999-01-25
For those who served in Berlin anytime from '46 to '94, this book brings back the history that was made at the flashpoint of the Cold War. Bering discusses how the cold war changed the American and Allied role in Berlin from occupier to protector with the closing of the frontier and institution of the Airlift. From that point on, the Allies became the defenders of "The Last Outpost of Freedom". Bering details the run-up to the wall and the subsequent hostilities which brought us close to war with the Cuban Missile Crisis. If anything is missing in this book, it is too little perspective from the Berliners veiwpoint and the social life of the Berlin Brigade. A good history review for those who served there.

asking big questions

Review Date: 2008-02-27
Art has given certain institutions the power to challenge the individuals within modern society to determine their own personal reactions to various situations. Linear thinking is likely to seem murky trying to sort out all the aspects of this that people who study find interesting.

I lived for years in Minneapolis and was considered crazy enough by people who lived there that certain issues this book raises have also played a part in my own evaluation of how things like undercover sting operations work. It seems rather small compared to war, bombs, the death of journalists, television stations that are bombed for broadcasting propaganda, and the state of politics in 2008, but that merely reflects that I did not escape having a hell opf a context when I left Minneapolis.

There are people who are trying to shape society so that all these things reach an equilibrium in which nobody cares, and reading this book might help you know how they feel.

I didn't think this book was particularly strong. It has writings from academics whom I totally admire. And I understand why people would study gayness as it relates to 1960s popular culture. Still, this book has very little about Warhol and his sexuality in it. A person is better off reading a biography of Warhol, especially those written by the people who knew him personally. This was quite an unimpressive anthology.

Review Date: 2005-03-08
I just passed my A+ today using this and Jean Andrews "A+ in Depth", also from DTI Publishing. I found studying with this Q&A style put the information in memorable bites that were easier to remember than the huge streams of meandering prose in the Andrews book. Also, some of the questions were really close to the questions on the test.

That being said, some of the content is a bit old and unnecessary as the test seemed to be oriented more around XP than legacy systems like 95 and NT - although there were NT related questions on the test. Lots of questions about laser printers, which this book covers. You shouldn't rely solely on this book for preparation, and I highly recommend you spend alot of time poking around on your XP box and becoming familiar with all the different menus, tabs, and utilities needed to change configuration settings on XP.

Too many errors

I bought this book yesterday. I am currently in chapter 3 and have already found 3 glaring errors. One question stated that there were three correct choices. The answer key only gave one answer.

On another question, the explanation of the question stated the correct answer, but in the answer key, it gave the incorrect letter choice. This is the third A+ book I have purchased and the only one I'm not sure I can trust.

This book is really great for teaching kids how the body works. I like how it is written in question and answew form. It makes learning about the body understandable for children as well as interesting. The book covers all the questions that kids always ask about the body. I was impressed with how much information the book covered and how well it was presented. I'm sure kids of all ages will enjoy this book.
