Bizarre and beautiful story about two young friends trying to infuse their lives with something special, who become obsessed with cryptic information concerning the "First of the Penguins". Intensely imaginative, skillfully rendered, exciting and suspenseful, and with the just the right mix of gravity and lightheartedness, it is a truly original and compelling book. I can't praise it enough.

I have trained as a First Responder and been certified using the sixth edition of this same volume. The seventh edition has definitely improved in clarity and variety of learning methods. There is a DVD with videos, games, puzzles, glosseries and other goodies included, as well as website links to other tests to improve your skills and continue your education. First Responder: A Skills Approach (7th Edition) is highly recommended by this fire/rescue First Responder.

We've been through six elementary school science fair projects in our family, and every time we have used this book to help guide the entire process. Especially good for parents who never had to do a project as a kid and want to help their own kids through one.

A Jewel
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-08
The author of this wonderful book was inspired by a simple, enlightening observation: life in the rain forests is in many ways similar to life in the sea. The author sketches the basic comparison in the early chapters, and in the later paints vibrant, engaging pictures of life in several communities: in the forest and the sea of course, but also in deserts, grasslands, rivers and lakes, even in the water-collecting cup of a tropical plant. He creates a picture of a network of life -- all forms of life in all communities are interdependent, and all categories (including "forest" and "sea") that scientists and laymen use to classify biological communities are arbitrary and artificial. He describes some of the strange creatures found in the transition areas between land and sea in order to show that the boundary between the two is no more than a man-made expedient; the boundaries blur as we observe the communities that have adapted to life on both land and sea. He ends the book with a thought-provoking chapter on modern man's role in nature -- words that will be close to the conscience of any thinking person.

Marston Bates obviously loved biology; reading this book I could feel the passion of a man who believed that his work was worth spending his life on, and that his life's work was worth recording carefully for other people. He must have been as passionate about writing as he was about biology: this is a well-written book. The rhythms of the prose echo those of the sea; the expertly-balanced sentences support his comparisons of seemingly disparate communities. This book is a treat for literate people, the kind of find that makes scouring the shelves of used-book stores seem like a sensible pursuit. Unfortunately, you may have to scour the shelves of several bookstores to find it, but if you can, get a copy of this jewel.

Although Amy Keating Rogers was not the writer of the episode Bloo Done It, she did a fine job penning this junior novellization of it. Bloo is just as funny here as he is on screen, and the suspense of the episode is wonderfully portrayed. One might not even miss Bloo sprouting an Inspector Gadget-esque helicopter from his head or Frankie speaking with a Southern accent.

Everyone's long lasting marriage
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-11

The Fourposter is a domestic marital comedy where the fourposter bed is symbolic of the duration and stability of the marriage. The play spans 35 years of a marrage that covers the night of the wedding, pregnancy with labor pains, ever present child-rearing problems, careers, infidelity, and typical hardships with ups and downs placed on a lasting marriage. The last move is to a smaller apartment; they sell the home and need to leave the fourposter.

To further familiarize every marriage with the play, author Jan de Hartog has given the character names of He and She, although we hear them call each other by names, Michael and Agnes. The play takes place in 1891 to 1925. The author crafted a timeless play that works well in any time period. This light comedy play was first presented onstage in 1951, where Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy starred on Broadway. This lengthy play is considered in Best American Plays Fourth Series, 1951-1957, edited by John Gassner. ....MzRizz

My 4th grade son learned more from this book than he did in the classroom. The lessons start out with the basics, but move very quickly to harder material. This works well for kids who learn easily but get bored quickly by too much repetition. The explanations and instructions are short but very helpful. There are stickers included to motivate the student to do his best. I let my son select a sticker to put on each completed assignment, that was his favorite part!
