Compiled and edited by Roger Robin Ekins (Professor of English and Chair of the Honors Program at Butte College, Oroville, California), Defending Zion: George Q. Cannon And The California Mormon Newspaper Wars of 1856-1857 is the latest and fifth volume in The Arthur H. Clark Company's outstanding "Kingdom in the West: The Mormons and the American Frontier" series and which details the published journalistic defenses of Mormonism in the 19th Century by a capable and articulate defender in a time when the newspaper was the most potent and powerful means of mass communication and persuasion for social, political, and religious causes. Defending Zion is a welcome and invaluable contribution to Western American History Studies in general, and The Utah War episode which saw President James Buchanan launching a military expedition to Utah so costly that it almost bankrupted the United States federal government on the eve of the Civil War.

This is a good book full of lot's of information from proper letter writing to laboratory procedures and medical abbreviations. I used this book along with the textbook in school for the medical assistant program.

I was researching the heroic story of the loss of the USS Aaron Ward (sunk off the Solomon Islands towards the end of WW2) when I came across this item advertised on one of the Amazon websites. Unaware I was looking at an eight-volume set of books, I baulked at the price and decided to search on. Nevertheless, I kept coming back to this item and decided to take a closer look. I am so glad I did.

Set out in alphabetical order and written without fear or favour, the United States Department of Defence have provided one of the most important research tools of modern years and I congratulate them for an excellent job of work. The entry for each ship commences with a note about the origin of the name. For example, the USS Missouri is named after an American state - enough said. The Aaron Ward, however, was named after Admiral Aaron Ward and that particular section commences with a most reasonable biography of the man.

Each ship to bear a particular name is covered in varying degrees of detail - largely dependant on what historical information was available to the compilers. Famous ships and, naturally, more recent vessels, get excellent coverage although it must be said that if the information was available on those much older vessels, then their full story is told here.

Watch out for single volumes being sold separately - when you are either looking for a complete set or perhaps a different volume.

Altogether, one of the best additions to my library for a very long time.

This is a very readable, very interesting, and very comprehensive book written on a child's level. My four-year old loves it (of course we read it to him) and frequently requests that we borrow it from the library. I highly recommend it for children of all ages.

I am a student of English Competence and found this book extemely insightful and practical for any teacher of Composition, especially a teacher of ethnolinguistic minority students. I find that this book integrates theoretical foundation (especially about language acquisition) with practical pedagogical implications that helps any teacher better understand and teach his or her students about English composition.

As a child (back when this book was new) this thin volume got me started on a lifetime of fascination with science. The brief profiles inside got me reading full-length biographies in science, and other books as well.

Well, in case you haven't been paying attention, our Chimp-in-Chief is gearing up for a 2005 draft. Absolutely frightening.

I read this book during the last "Madness of King George" aka Gulf War I. It is an excellent little book that clearly lays out how the draft system works, draft classifications, who is most likely to be called up, etc. It also offers subtle hints on how to legaly avoid the draft, or at least make it difficult to find you. Some rules have changed since it was published, but at least you will have an idea of what to expect. Thank God I didn't have to use it though. These days, it's a different story...

I got my copy from the local library; however, John Ashcrofts' recent intrusions into our library habits would make me think twice about checking it out. better to order it here.

I expect there will be a new edition out soon, but by then it may be too late.

Please, get this book for you or someone you love and at least give them a fighting chance, no pun intended.
