Prayer for guidance and protection should always come first!Review Date: 2005-09-18
_Specifically the book provides short, basic chapters on: Pendulums and Dowsing, Numerology, Domino Divination, Dice Divination, Astromancy, the I Ching, the Tarot, Palmistry, Scrying (crystal ball, sand-pattern, tea leaves, sea shells, liqueur, smoke, and candle wax), and Dreams. As I said before, all you are going to get is the most basic information- a place to start. However, if you have only one reference book on divination, this could serve.
_The introductory and closing chapters show the proper motivation of the authors. They believe in an Ultimate Deity. Plus their concept of progressive reincarnation is quite accurate (passing through the barrier between the earth plane and the god plane through birth and death in order to gain and assimilate knowledge and experience.) It is also emphasized that interference in subject's lives is forbidden.
_A few things that I found problems with were what they refer to as "Astromancy." As a classically trained astrologer I do not quite see the legitimacy of what they describing here. Also, I noticed that in the extensive scrying section, the oldest method of all, the speculum or mirror, seems to be ignored. But most of all, I wish that the authors would have emphasized the importance of prayer and purification before approaching any sort of reading- you need protection and guidance when opening yourself up to this sort of thing.

an in-depth study of a complex problemReview Date: 2000-12-29
Collins' knowledge of the Hebrew Bible is extensive on both theological and historical levels. His knowledge is also useful because in the Hebrew Bible are the roots of the problems with messianic interpretation - the scriptures themselves. Once Collins places particular scriptures in their historical context, he then goes on to show their influence(s) and interpretation(s) in various post- and extra-biblical works of literature. We find a pre-existent, heavenly messiah, a priestly messiah, a kingly messiah, and a militant messiah in the works Collins analyzes. At least one messiah was expected and possibly and two, depending on who wrote the work. Collins also deals with the history of the word "messiah" and its various uses in the Hebrew Bible.
In reading the book, the reader will gain some insights as to how and why the writers of the New Testament understood Jesus the way that they did, but the goal of the book is not to connect these works to Jesus. The book is, in many ways, a survey of the messianic thought during and before Jesus' time.
This book is not an introduction by any means. It is an in-depth study; some previous knowledge of the Scrolls, the Pseudepigrapha, and Second Temple history will be useful to the reader. A glossary would have been nice and helpful and would have opened the doors for less knowledgeable readers to read and understand the book. Overall, this is an excellect read. However, previous knowledge will enable - and perhaps even be necessary - for reader to grasp the many insights in Collins' work.

Second Temple MessianismReview Date: 2005-06-12
This book gives a fair review of the various expectations such as a warrior type messiah, a suffering servant, as well as some lesser known movements such as the two messiah movement and even the Christianized returning messiah dogma.
For the most part, the author is not identifying the messiah as any particular individual, but is trying to provide a broad scope look at the many movements and possible reasons as to how they developed and evolved from one type to another.
Drawing heavily upon the Dead Sea Scrolls, the author examines the various Bible texts that imply messianism and attempts to place these messiahs in their proper context. I believe that any serious student of this period would do well to have a copy of this book handy as it should prove to be a well used and well cited text as the research and debate about messianism thrives and grows.

Needs another title....it is more than about the AntichristReview Date: 2004-08-04
But the book has an expiration date....2007, this is when he assumes the rapture could occur based on the flawed view that it has been 7,000 years since creation. Though he says he is not setting a date for the rapture...he has three years for this to be determined as the rapturing occurring during this year.
There are few flaws that crop up.
First he agrees with David Hunt and others that see the Church in the Olivet Discourse. Jesus in this discourse was concerned with Israel and what the Jews were to prepare for before His second coming. Luke 21 covers mainly events to happen in A.D. 70, when Israel is judged, as a foreshadow of what the "great tribulation" will be like in the future...and Matthew 24 and Mark 13 cover events leading up to His second coming.
Then there is the coming war foretold in Ezekiel 38 & 39...which could very likely occur before the rapture. Dr Fruchtenbaum in his book "The Footsteps of the Messiah: A Study of the Sequence of Prophetic Events, Revised Edition " covers this prophecy as a Pretribulation event and why it is not likely that it is an event that occurs during the Seventieth Week.
Finally there is the dependence on what is traditionally accepted interpretation. Some areas of prophecy is still unfolding and we learn a little more about God's plan for Israel. Too often the "traditional" focus through the lens of the Church, than through Israel. Thus what prophecy are for Israel...tends to have the Church placed there instead. God is not through with Israel and if we are the terminal generation of the Church age....we will witness and experience what God will do to wake up His people to anticipate the coming of their Messiah.
But dispute the flaws...this is a commendable book. I would title it "Satan; Master Deceiver, His History and His Coming Son.

A very good look at a number of fascinating issuesReview Date: 2004-06-02
I must say that I do not agree with everything that Dr. Jeffrey writes in this book, but I did find his arguments to be well thought-out, and well presented. Not a work of deep theology, but what this book is, is a very good look at a number of fascinating issues that any Bible student is sure to wonder about. I found this book to be a fascinating read, and do not hesitate to recommend it to all Christians.

The book also provides shades on a lots of prevailing thoughts/beliefs about how the latter have been distorted with times. An example being the Taj Mahal which is believed to be the Proof of Love of a King for his queen but in fact, it's supposed to be a TEMPLE. You will surely love reading it... Good Reading....
Some interesting concepts.Review Date: 2002-01-07
The facts like this divert your attention very quickly away from what is otherwise a very good book.
The book does contain "unedited" teachings of the cycles of the world/universe and preditions of the future and even what some of the prophecies that have occurred. It is also a very good reference that puts together a lot of the stories that many people have heard of and are now in danger of being forgotten.
For me, it even served as a historical reference. Much the first few pages explain the different incarnations of God/teachers and what their roles were. This list includes Krishna, Rama, Buddha and most of the others. That is something that I have had difficulty finding elsewhere.

Facts and Faith Don't Quite MeshReview Date: 2005-11-08
That being said, the later chapters of the book are more of a theological discussion than a historical one--God's intentions for the Jews, that the obvious answer to the age-old question of Who Owns the Land is that the land belongs to God. I felt as though I'd been watching a documentary on the History Channel only to have someone change the channel while I wasn't looking. I'm not saying there isn't a lot of excellent historical research and analysis in this book, but I just don't see the point of examining a very difficult historical subject with as narrow a lens as the author's pro-Israel, evangelical point of view. Faith and religion play heavily into the issue of Israel. The only way to make sense of the conflict is a fully objective examination of both sides, which unfortunately this book can't do by its own design.
As a theological work, it deserves five stars for its unfliching historical portrayal of the Jews (persecuted since ancient times, and yet at times brutal and imperialistic in their defense of Israel), but it doesn't succeed as a history because of its intertwined theology.
Know what you're picking up if you read this book. It's only half a history.
Single Best Primer on the Arab-Israeli ConflictReview Date: 2003-12-31
I must say that I couldn't disagree more with the previous review of this book. It is true that "Who Owns the Land" certainly would not add much new information if you happened to be a Middle East Scholar, but this book goes a long way toward answering nearly every basic question that the average person might have in the area of Middle East peace and conflict.
Given that both Ellisen and Dyer are Evangelical Christians of a more conservative bent, the information is presented from Christian perspective. However, this is done without being obnoxious or unnecessarily dogmatic. This is an unusual skill today and should allow the book to enjoy a wide readership from a broad spectrum of society.
The book's one drawback is also one of its great strengths. The books seeks to provide an in-depth historical analysis of the conflict in the Middle East centered on the Jewish people, and therefore; it does not address Palestinian and Arab concerns at that same level. To do so would have doubled or trippled the book's size. By focusing more closely upon the Jewish people, Ellisen and Dyer have done a masterful job of devling deep into the subject without getting the reader lost.
To provide a broader perspective, I would recommend several other authors & books that deal with the subject either directly or indirectly. I would also recommend a few books on the nature of Islam through history, as Islamic feeling and religious duty provides much fuel for the current conflict.
Dr. Bernard Lewis is Cleveland E. Dodge Professor of Near Eastern Studies Emeritus, at Princeton University. Almost any of his books, of which there are dozens, would be helpful in gaining a broader perspective on the conflict.

A deeper relationship with God..Review Date: 2008-04-07

In 1977, Ellen Chaksil felt what I would term as a moving of the Spirit. She knew something was missing in her life. She was happily married and in good health. The Spirit led her into a deeper relationship with the Lord. Ellen attended a retreat, Renewal Movement, where she discovered that Jesus must be the center of your life. He must come first. Ellen used a journal to record her spiritual journey. Eventually, God led her to use the journal to record prophesy. Too many people turn to God in prayer handing him a wish list. Prayer is also listening. Chaksil received a message for the world. We must change our ways and repent, or we will be destroyed. Chaksil feels she is called to share God's message with the world.
Ellen Chaksil is a Charismatic Catholic. She uses scripture to support her message. I admire Ms. Chaksil's courage to share God's message with the world. I am sure it has not been easy. With God There Is Hope is well-written and easy to understand. This is a message for all of humanity.
Local author will attempt to reach national audienceReview Date: 2007-11-21
by Charles Schillinger
The local author of "With God There is Hope" has sold about 250 copies in stores locally, and now is seeking a national publicist to take her message to a broader audience.
At her first book signing a couple of months ago, Peckville resident Helen Silvestri, who wrote the work under the pen name Ellen Chaksil, was welcomed by a crowd that quickly bought out the limited number available at Borders in Dickson City.
A second signing was set up at Borders, and third at Barnes & Nobles in Wilkes-Barre, both of which also did well, said Mrs. Silvestri.
"I felt very happy," she said about the turnout. "The message about a hope for humanity is something we so desperately need today."
The book details Mrs. Silvestri's life and her quest to spread the message about the power of prayer and her own messages received from God. Mrs. Silvestri said she started receiving messages from God in 1978, when from her consciousness she heard: "When they are threatened with the loss of all this, only then will they turn to Me."
In 1996, she received confirmation that Pope John Paul II had read her letter detailing the prophecy. And just last month, Mrs. Silvestri noted that Pope Benedict XVI named his second Encyclical "In Hope We are Saved," a treatise on the need to put faith and hope in God.
Her publicist, Nicole Langan, of Tribute Books in Eynon, said interest in the book is being driven by whom the author is.
"I think the sales of Helen's book are directly related to her active involvement in its promotion," Ms. Langan said. "Helen is a leader of the local Catholic Charismatic movement and is a member of the National Council of Catholic Women.
"Through word of mouth, many of these Catholics attended the book signings because they know Helen."
Mrs. Silvestri said she wanted to share the message with people, but she decided to use a pen name because her message "sounds ambitious" to many and partly because she felt "unworthy."
"Much of the content that I put forth in the book I felt is beyond me -- it just left me with a feeling of unworthiness," she said, adding she is now happy she decided to write the book.
"Just reading it, I know now this was right. I did the right thing."
