Lifted - The fourth section of Moments and Milestones gives us, the readers, a welcome respite from the drama and angst of previous chapters. The author takes us on an internal journey of discovery that leads to the awakening of a new and brighter consciousness.

Looking - Section five, finds the author using his new found sense of self-worth empowering him to become an adventurer. Traveling overseas in a hopeful search for both purpose and meaning. It is at this point that the story really became engaging for me. Life in a strange and exotic land with romantic love seemingly just around the corner. Exciting!

The pace of the writing seems much more clear to me now, though still furiously frenetic. Perhaps I am just becoming used to the author's style.
Lifted and Looking provides a bouncy almost buoyant feel good adventure that completely enthralls the reader.

Up next is 'Loving'! (The story I originally picked this book up to read.) Can't wait!

The third and fourth installments of Moments & Milestones, with the lilting alliterative continuance of L-words, Lifted and Looking, is filled with an empirical exploration of the author's personal acquaintance with hallucinogenic drugs, and also a graphic annotation on earning a living "in the flesh." In fact, Mr. Mulder's exploration of meth is as fully rendered as Carlos Castaneda's exploration of peyote buttons. The little voice (the wee scientist, sort of a Jiminy Cricket) also takes us vividly into the world of legal prostitution and "escort services" in Australia. It's a catalog as long as Don Giovanni's and as spicy as Frank Harris'.

Mr. Mulder has indeed presented us with an immense life, and we still have more "L's" to go. Plus, his evident love and enthrallment with the world down-under inspires. The carefully crafted description of Sydney and its pristine environs compliments the work.

I recommend Moments & Milestones highly, starting with Little and going through to the last L (whatever that will be), which I am looking forward to reading. I am now proceeding to Loving, and then to Lunacy with all the interest of a newbie at life's circus. "Come one, come all. Step right up and listen to that little voice . . . ah, another L-word, but I think an important one, for there is plenty to "l"isten to in "l"ittle's voice.

As a part-time member of the New Age movement I was thrilled to read the account of Timothy Mulder's spiritual awakening. He details his past problems with organized religion and his devout connection to rationality and the scientific principle. When his investigation of the physical world dovetails into his shamanistic experiences, the results are a completely believable perspective on the nature of reality.
Though he has not yet discovered all the answers to life, in truth his journey seems to have only just begun, Mulder is definitely a man on a mission. Truth has become his goal.
Where that quest takes him is anyone's guess, but I for one intend to be there as the hoped for answers are revealed.

I found myself reading 'Lifted' with both hands holding on tight to my Kindle while perched precariously on the edge of my seat. This chapter of Timothy Mulder's memoir dealt with his experiences with drugs, one drug in particular and the effects this had on him both mentally and physically. It also describes how he came in touch with his inner psyche. I felt this section was well written. It was as though I was present in the room as the scenes played out. When the Author hit rock bottom and finally decided it was time to make a change, I felt as if I too needed to come up for air.

"Looking" is a good title for this 5th chapter of his memoir. It details how he made a change and began looking for who he wanted to be and the efforts he made to be that person. It talks of his success as he left his former self behind. There is a golden light at the end of this tunnel....and once again I find myself anxious to explore the next installment of his book.

What more mischief is in store for our hero? I thought I had seen it all. Timothy Mulder opens our eyes to a reality unknown to some and yet keeps our sympathies while he struggles with life and its revelations.

He gives hope where none is expected and passion where missed. Shows love and concern for the lonely and opens your eyes to a new reality with his discoveries.

Highly recommended and still wanting more...
I look forward to the next installment.

A Captivating Journey!

The experiences and perspective of this author seemed to me, at times, to come from all things universal - as if he is a universal reporter - showing us his findings. Findings and observations that in fact could be observed by any one of us if we just took that moment to stop, look around and contemplate our own awareness that there's more to this world than meets the eye. And, upon closer examination, discovering an understanding of the nature of life itself. These are extraordinary times in which we now find ourselves and through this journey offered to us we may become cognizant of the extraordinary beings who are in our very midst and the phenomena - miraculous and supernatural - that comes with that. I think that most readers will find something in this book that they will be able to relate to in their own lives. Since, in reality, we are truly one and there is no separation, the author is, in a very interesting and captivating way, telling a story that is in our collective consciousness - yet from his own personal experience and perspective. I recommend this book anyone who's ever asked themselves "Is this all there is?"

The essence of all world religions

In Masters Among Us, Thomas Curley reminds us that the essence underlying all world religions is love for ourselves and each other. Although this message is timeless and has been presented repeatedly in various works, Mr. Curley has written a unique book filled with experiences of individuals who have met living Masters, from many traditions, to demonstrate that this message is Alive and Well. Interviewing persons who have had visions, seen apparations, and had direct communication with The Divine Presence in various forms - Christian, Muslim, and Hindu, for example - Mr. Curley fills our hearts with wonder and awe as he documents how God revals constantly His compassionate concern for us and is guiding us in both seen and unseen ways. This book also presents a brief history of spiritual researchers and visionaries over the past 150 years from Madame Blavetsky to Benjamin Creme. Filled with pictures and quotes from diverse sources - from the Virgin Mary's predictions to Maitreya's appearances - this book will infuse any spiritual seeker with a greater desire to understand and know the Supreme Reality.

Hello folks. Forgive my indulgence for rating my own book at 5 stars, but what the heck - I like it. I want to announce the imminent release of the revised, 2004 edition of Masters Among Us, which will be available through Amazon.com and other major book outlets by Spring of this year. This revised work contains loads of new material. one entire new chapter, and the addition of photographs of many of the miraculous events discussed within the book. The book will retail for under $25.00, and is being published by 1stbooks.com. Come back soon. I highly recommend this new edition, and I look forward to your feedback in the future.

Masters Among Us takes on a subject of incredible moment. As he rightly points out in his book, a majority of people have experienced unexplainable things in their life that could be fairly considered supernatural, yet only rarely do people speak of these things. Mr. Curly has done so from the heart in this book, as well as correlated his and other's stories to many different spiritual traditions. Interesting and compelling to say the least. In fact, galvanizes readers into altruistic action.

A journey of faith across belief systems and spiritual traditions. A
joyful affirmation of God's presence among us. Thomas Curley offers a
detailed account of his remarkable discoveries and miraculous
experiences in the past twenty years.

I finished the book with a
powerful realization. Comparative theology is not only useful but, to
those with right motivation and spiritual understanding, it becomes a
ladder to God. Without rejecting his solid Catholic background, Curley
embarked on an exploration of other spiritual traditions. In the
course of his quest, he encountered extraordinary sages like Swami
Muktananda, Benjamin Creme, and a relatively unknown Pakistani
initiate, remarkable individuals like an American diplomat with direct
experiences of the Masters of Wisdom, and a luminous string of fellow
seekers of truth. In the end, Curley revisits his own religion with
renewed fervor and deeper understanding. Faith and trust in God is all
we need to experience bliss and recognize the presence of the
Christ.

An evident disciple of Jesus, the author shares his
spiritual pilgrimage with millions of fellow Christians. May they heed
his generous call and begin to see that behind the wooden Christ of
dogma awaits the living One of Love.

CRITICAL Foundation for Understanding the End Times....

Review Date: 2006-04-03
This book's title, though accurate, won't sell books, which is unfortunate since this is one book whose message needs to get out. In fact, after a general prophecy overview book, this is the single book that I most recommend for the general reader as foundational in order to understand the End Times and the stage-setting taking place before our eyes. The book of Revelation cannot be understood without understanding the Old Testament book of Daniel to which it alludes and fleshes out, and this book by master teacher and scholar Showers is the best commentary on Daniel for the general reader.

The title is both a name of God used by the prophet Daniel as well as the theme of the book of Daniel--i.e., that God is sovereign, or "most high" over men, nations, and rulers, humbling and exalting whom He will (individuals, rulers, nations), in control of history, and even telling us in advance what will happen. This book is a verse-by-verse commentary on all of Daniel, a book that is about more than prophecy, though Daniel's chapters 2, 7, and 9 do focus on prophecy and are absolutely essential to understanding when the Messiah will come again, the geographic origins of the Antichrist, the upcoming 7-year covenant with Israel with its rebuilt Holy Place, the Man of Sin World Ruler, and more, including chapters 6-19 of Revelation, which are based on Daniel.

I recommend this book to people wanting to understand the End Times but who are unaware that the Tribulation, the coming confederated superpower, and the "Antichrist" of Revelation all refer back to Daniel. Although Renald Showers is relatively unknown to popular audiences (he's not the type to toot his own horn), he's known, respected, and cited among dispensational theologians. If there are few reviews for this book, it's not because this book is some fly-by-night, it's just that Showers' writings are mostly known through his decades of work with The Friends of Israel Gospel Ministry. Doctrinally, Showers is top-notch, always precise, never going beyond the text into eisegesis. He writes from a "pre-trib, pre-mil" view, that the rapture happens before the Tribulation that in turn is before the Millenium.

The Most High God, like Showers' other works, is known for doctrinal faithfulness, eschewing speculation and sensationalism, and adherence to a literal, historical-grammatical approach to interpretation. Some of his books (such as his masterpiece Maranatha) are heavy with indexes and endnotes, but not The Most High God, which keeps it simple, straightforward, and suitable for the beginner, yet it's still helpful for readers already familiar with Daniel. This book shows how scripture-to-scripture comparison, history, and context give insight into the symbolic prophetic images, such as the 10-headed beast. Showers does not get into alternative, comparative interpretations of Daniel, for that try Walvoord's Daniel: The Key to Prophetic Revelation. The Bible says that the book of Daniel is "sealed" until the End Times, that'd be now, and I can't recommend this commentary on Daniel highly enough as a starting point to making sense of what is happening in the world and what will happen.

I admire Mr. Shower's view of the Bible. He has done a great job summarizing the book. The material is not indepth however it goes into enough information that any body reading it would say that his material is a great tool. I sometimes have a hard time reccomending a book especially to new believers, but if there is a new believer interested in studying the basics of the contribution of Daniel, then this is a great read!

Despite the large amount of mediocre fantasy being pumped out these days, there are rare treasures still to be found. One of these is "The Penny Prophecy". Emma Sharon Rich turns a beautiful tale with protagonists that are well rounded and interesting. These are not just your cut and paste characters. Aliane is smart, strong-willed and beautiful, but she is also naive and easily manipulated. And while his part in the novel is relatively small, Thalan is a character worth getting to know.

The main antagonist in the story, Jaerak Thorin, is not only evil, he is intelligent and seductive. Despite his obvious black-hearted nature, Rich is able to make the reader hope that Jaerak Thorin is not as bad as he appears. Much like other loved villains, one hopes Jaerak may be redeemed from his evil ways.

The story is full of the lore of Ms. Rich's world which adds depth and history to the story. With the captivating style of storytelling, this book is truly a gem waiting to be found!

This is a great book for those who hold fantasy close to their hearts. Rich weaves a tale that draws the reader in, making it incredibly hard to put the book down. The characters are very real, and the story is made even more personal by showing that not all of the good guys are all good, and the bad guys, not all bad. A fun read! I have already recommended this book to my friends who love a good story. Great work, Emma!

Large promise in the small characters

Review Date: 2001-11-06
I must say that I liked the cat best. The essence of a bookstore cat, rich and deep in character and history, he sets a brassy tone for the rest of the characters to live up to. Rich's book is full of the promise of a developing writer. Her best moments are when she forgets the nods to Tolkien's descriptions and Jordon's tangled plots and prophecies and strikes out on her own, drawing her minor figures in clean, aesthetic lines that catch in your mind -- Aliane's father weeping alone, big-nosed Thalan staring into a fire or refilling a cup unasked, Thelma and Koris rich in selfless caring and thoughtless goodness, standing inside their inn as the flames begin to crackle. Yes, the standard fantasy story elements are here to please the purists or anyone just looking for a fix -- the usual polarization of facinating evil, beautiful and baleful, and marred goodness struggling and hopeful, magic and earthy elementalism against the corruption of organized religion, tangled plots and intrigue, missed clues and obvious blunders that the audience can enjoy catching before the characters do
-- though there be no dragons here. But the true gems of the story aren't those Jaerak finds or the Seekers talk of; they are found in those characters who seem to have come the most naturally and who people the story with spirits we can recognize, though they do not stride so boldly across the landscape. Sketched without artifice or heavy embroidery, they rise seemlessly from the needs of the story and serve it utterly without outside influence or awkward pretension, providing the best evidence of what this author can do and what readers have to look forward to.

The strength of this book is its focus on celebrating the attributes of God. The author did a very good job bringing out the theme of the book of Revelation, which is that God will win in the end due to His nature, and He's looking out for us.

I was also impressed with the quality of analysis that went in to the various outlines provided for the book of Revelation. There are actually three different outlines included. They will help people of any interpretive approach make better sense of the book.

Since the author is an Amillennialist, I wish he'd spent more time pitching the theoretical strengths of that system. When, towards the end of the book, the millennium is addressed, it is quickly brushed aside as just another example of how God will win. While this is true in a sense, there was no attempt to refer to the literally hundreds of Old Testament references to it, and how they can be explained as allegories (as opposed to literal fulfillment).

His argument that most people get more hung up on the puzzle than the pictures is an excellent one. For that reason, I'd suggest this book to anyone studying the book of Revelation.

Short, Sweet & Refreshing book

This paperback on Revelation brings in a simple and refreshing perspective on Revelation. For example he suggests that children can understand Revelation...that we need to stop 'puzzling' over Revelation and enjoy the Panoramic pictures of this book. His 'down home' encouragement is exactly what this book is when laid side by side with Beale's NIGTC Commentary on Revelation. (The NIGTC is a technically dense work with many many references to all kinds of sources for each verse).

Dr. Beale (2004's E.T.S. President) recommends this book as part of his course recommended reading on Revelation at Wheaton. Of the 8 or so books he recommends, this one sports a number of great visual concepts that do empower bible teachers and pastors. As a pastor who is preaching through Revelation from the Greek text, I found his material helpful on the application side of things.

For example, on the four major views on Revelation Poythress supplies a great little visual diagram of how the four views look. Just the diagram alone can help many people understand the four different view (Preterist, Futurist, Historical, and Idealist) more than most commentaries would.

The weakness is that you will not have comments of substance on every question in Revelation. It's not meant to be an exhaustive commentary on Revelation.

Enjoy it. It's well written and worth owning a copy.

Great Introduction to Revelation

The Returning King is a great introduction the book of Revelation. The first 50 pages or so contain high level discussions on the various views of Revelation (idealist, futurist, preterist, historicist) as well as other controversial aspects such as the millennium (premil, postmil, amil). This survey of all the major viewpoints alone is worth the price of the book. The rest of book is a high level discussion of the text. Poythress takes an idealist, amil view but provides a very fair discussion of all the other viewpoints.

It was written as an introduction and is very successful as such. It is not a thorough commentary of Revelation. If you have never studied Revelation this is a great place to start.

The Book of Revelation Made Slightly Less Difficult

A few years ago I heard a speaker who began his talk by saying that he loved the book of Revelation because it was so simple and clear and it so neatly summed up the teaching of the Bible. I laughed because everyone knows that the book of Revelation is anything but simple and clear. He said he was serious and he mentioned that he had studied Revelation under Vern Poythress at Westminster Seminary and he had made it seem clear and simple.

At the time this book had not been published but I was able to get some tapes by Poythress, and they taught what is written in this book. When the book came out I got it right away and I have to say that I was not disappointed in the tapes or in this book.

Poythress writes like a kindly, wise elder. I say he is kind because, though he takes a position on the interpretation of the book, he is gracious to those who disagree with him. One of the things I particularly liked about this book is his discussion of how to outline the book. He listed a few different ways that this could be outlined, but rather than attacking various positions he affirmed that the existence of these differing views should cause us to marvel at the greatness of God in the book. These things show that the book of Revelation is like a giant tapestry, with many colors and patterns weaving in and out. The book is so rich that one can never tire of admiring the beauties of God in it.

As to his position, Poythress says that the book follows the pattern of recapitulation - it describes the same historical events over and over again using different metaphors and pictures. So, rather than being a straight chronological description of the end time, the book of Revelation describes the second coming, and the events surrounding it, several times.

Poythress shows that the book of Revelation is actually comprised of several cycles of judgment. He gives the tools for understanding how to identify these cycles and in doing so makes Revelation slightly less difficult.

This is the place to start in understanding the book of Revelation.

As one who has published a book of sermons from Revelation,(Revelation Plain and Simple) I really appreciate the fine work Dr. Osborne has done on this commentary. He deals with all of the controversial issues, giving all the options, and then presents his own view. He deals clearly with the text, but the best parts of his commentary, from my vantage point, are the "application" parts of his book. Grant Osborne recognizes that the book of Revelation was written to believers throughout world history, and so he does a masterful job of applying the text to this lives of everyday believers. This is what so many miss. The book of Revelation is incredibly applicable to people of every time and place. Osborne has uncovered the deep theology of this book, and I believe that is the very best thing he has brought to the table. There are many commentaries on the book of Revelation, but few apply it so well to the lives of saints everywhere.

As a pastor who is studying and preaching from the Greek text through Revelation, and who audited Beale at Wheaton on Revelation, I find that this commentary is used on every sermon.
It's a first rate commentary with opinions that true scholars and regular pastors learn to respect even if they do not agree with him on every point. Sometimes when reading Beale there are so many references to apocalyptic literature and other sources that one can get overwhelmed. Osborne doesn't give as many references, but the other reviewer is correct...he's easier to read than Beale or Aune. I have several hundred dollars of the best commentaries I could find on Revelation. This one is one of the few that almost always makes it in my book bag (and it's pretty thick). I am unwilling to go without it when I have the potential of preparing a sermon at home rather than my office.

He sets apart special comments and exegetical points in shaded frames for quick reference. One time when we were discussing a particularly detailed and crucial point in class Dr. Beale excitedly said, I've got to call Osborne about this....which shows that if one of the top scholars in the world on Revelation is excited about calling Osborne...he must be great. And as I've used him, I agree. His stuff is great.

When they diverge, I usually go with Beale, but Osborne makes one think carefully and helps you work through issues in a different way than Beale does. The big differences are that Osborne has smooth reading, fewer references to research on most points, but about as much material in general as Beale.

Any pastor who is preaching from Revelation should refer to Osborne as well as Beale for indepth background on almost every nuance of the text one can imagine. So although I cannot say I agree with every single point in this book...it's easily a five star commentary that you need in your library and open on your desk as you research the textual issues and depths of this incredible grand finale of the bible...the book of Revelation.

As a Bible teacher I have read many commentaries on the Revelation. I have taught every verse of the Revelation 3 times and have a different view than the one Osborne has. But in saying that I find this particular commentary the best balanced and clearest thinking of any I have read. It is not a technical commentary but I find it as useful as those that major in handling the original language. So read commentaries that agree with whatever view of interpretation you hold to - then sit back and really enjoy and be challenged by this clear writing scholar.

This book does a great job of delving into the text of revelation and trying to understand it through a similar framework of the first readers. The first time I read it, I thought they spent two much time talking in the first chapter about alien encounters and such. Then one of my friends led a bible study on revelation and the first comment was that it was an alien encounter/out of body experience. The authors were thinking ahead. Great book.

Wes Howard-Brook and Anthony Gwyther have written an excellent commentary on Revelation. Like most mainstream scholars they believe that John of Patmos was writing about the Roman empire of his day. What I found especially unique about this book, was its very fascinating account of the imperial court and imperial worship. The authors make a very good case that Revelation's message to its Asian Minor audience was not to compromise with the deadly - both to soul and body - Roman imperial culture.

Furthermore, the authors also discuss applications of Revelation to current social justice issues. I really learned a lot form this book. I also used Unveiling Empire to teach an adult education class at my church. The class seemed fairly well received, and part of the reason was due to this book.

Resisting Empire's Embrace

This is a thematic rather than verse-by-verse commentary. An underlying premise is that the churches of Asia Minor who originally received this letter were not under the severe persecution from Rome that has long been assumed. The authors assert that it was in fact a time of peace and affluence, and the churches in Asia Minor were succumbing to assimilation. The parallels with churches in the West are therefore more exact and evocative than previous interpreters have understood. The authors are not shy about drawing out the similarities between Babylon (as depicted in Revelation) and contemporary global capitalism (the incarnation of Babylon that surrounds us today). Drawing inspiration from Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker movement, as well as the interpretive and prophetic work of Daniel Berrigan and William Stringfellow, this is a provocative reading of a consistently neuralgic but unavoidable part of the canon. The political implications are drawn out in a final chapter dialogue between the authors.

Howard-Brook and Gwyther unpack what Revelation really means. Studying the book in its original context - remember, Revelation was written for the first century, not for us! - the authors still connect the concerns of John of Patmos' day to our own. They see Revelation's message of faithful resistance to the surrounding patriotic culture and how John warned the early Christians to resist it and preach the good news instead. And they uncover what the "beast" really is in modern society. A thoughtful and passionate understanding of this fantastic book's true message to both its time and our own.

Every truly great read has an exciting ending. The last chapter is where it all comes together.

Yet most who daily read the most popular book in the world, have never comprehended the last chapter, the Book of Revelation.

"Becoming Empire" identifies hundreds of 'hyper-links' in the text of Revelation to the preceding books of holy scriptures. The veil lifts, and the reader begins to see and hear not fictions of starwars, but God moving through history and pointing to the here and now.

Today is the battle, and God's children are in the front lines. The whole Bible, understood, is their map to victory.

Though perhaps presenting only one side (Protestant)of Christian history, I still find this book to be excellent. It is a reminder of why America offers religious tolerance and freedom, and will hopefully prove to contain an incorrect prediction of our future.

WOW! Must reading for anyone questioning the events of today

In studying the Bible, we find that there are prophecies which tell about most of major world powers which have ruled our world. How unthinkable it is that America, the greatest nation of all time, would not be mentioned in the Bible! This book brings together the truth of God's Word with the exciting fulfillment of actual historical record. Anyone who is serious about understanding the prophecies of the Bible should read this book.

This fantasy novel, set in ancient times and centering on the life of the most powerful emperor in the known world, bristles with action, romance and humor. The characters are strong and engaging. I was thoroughly entertained and totally immersed in this intriguing story. I hated coming to the end of this first book in the series and eagerly await the next one!

This novel about an unique society of ancient age is well writen and entertaining. Will appeal to anyone who believes in strong men, beautiful women and the extraordinary people who populate this ancient world. Romance for the ladies, battles for the men. An interesting plot very well presented. Well worth the price and a future bestseller. Buy it now before Oprah reviews it and the price goes up.

Clarence Larkin is the top dog when it comes to interpretting Bible propesy. If you want to understand one of the hardest books of the Bible to comprehend, then get Clarence Larkin's The Book of Revelation. But don't think it's all about the future. Much of what I read was very pertinent to my life as Christian today. It actually changed my life. I'll just say this...I don't want to get spit out.

After reading 4-5 different books on this subject I was perfectly delighted to come across this book. It was exactly what I was looking for to have a grasp on the upcming actions illustrated in the best way I can understand: Graphs. The book also gives very good cross reference across the Bible Books.
