Excellent survey of Biblical EschatologyReview Date: 1999-10-08
Excellent Sketch of the Dispensational View of the End TimesReview Date: 2007-05-01
The author proceeds into a study of what the Bible says about death and the intermediate state between death and bodily resurrection. He concludes from such texts as 2 Corinthians 5:8 and Phillipians 1:21-23 that the souls of believers are ushered immediately into the presence of the Lord the moment they die.
There is also a chapter about the second coming of Jesus Christ and how this event (described in Matthew 24 and Revelation 19) differs from the coming of Christ to rapture the church (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). While not everyone will agree with Hoyt about seeing the coming of Christ as a two stage event, he does a good job of presenting the view. He labors hard to show why the partial rapture view and the mid tribulational and posttribulation views of the rapture are not as biblically sound as the pretribulational view. Hoyt repeatedly charges those who disagree with his take on the end times as not having a consistently literal interpretation of the Bible. I feel that this is not always the case, as there are many people who hold to different views of the rapture who do attempt to interpret literally.
There is also a helpful chapter about what the seven year tribulation will be like and another chapter about the rise of the antichrist and his evil nature. Hoyt also discusses the one thousand year reign of Christ on the earth, the different judgments in scripture, and the eternal state. The two surprises from my perspective were that a. Hoyt believes that the raptured church will be in heaven for the entire millennial reign of Christ and b. There will be an eternal distinction between Israel, the tribulation saints, the Old Testament saints, and the Church. The Church will have a greater position in eternity than the other groups, although Israel will be the greatest nation.
My problem with this last teaching is that the Bible seems to teach that we are all one in Christ (Galatians 3:28, 1 Cor 12;13) and that there is only one people of God (1 Peter 2:9, John 10:16).
But all in all, I really liked the book.

Understanding meaningReview Date: 2006-02-26
The book exhorts the reader to be knowledgeable about the sources of his or her beliefs and attempts to find in cannonized writings what they don't say or intend to say. The author guides a healthy inquiry into the original meaning and intent of the scriptures and shows where the Darbyists have taken them.
Dr. Efird explains the beliefs shared generally by all factions of Darbyism, distilling them to three, and their derivation from the scriptures. When one reads the scriptures through Dr. Efird's eyes, one learns about the scriptural writers' intentions, their historical context, and the religious significance. Then leading the reader through the eyes of the Darbists, he shows where their ideas are non-scriptural, permutations, and inaccurate interpretations to contrive a foregone conclusion.
The Darby belief system and its offshoots attract those who seek historical, scientific and symbolic meaning from the scriptures and desire them to say what they want them to say. They appeal to those looking for explanations built upon complex cross-references and hidden, symbolic meaning. They show what others don't know, giving a heady glimpse into the unknown and a resulting sense of advantage. And finally they formulate a man-made, non-scriptural, heretical construct which this book serves to undermind.

One of his best...Review Date: 2000-11-27
This title, 'Epic Battles of the Last Days,' I consider one of his strongest discourses. The main theme is spiritual warfare, and that inside the church. Reader, you will be challenged from every side, you will be called to test yourself against the measure of the Word, you will be prompted to review your personal lifestyle and relational patterns. You will be uncomfortable, if you read this tome to reflect upon yourself.
I have no doubt there will be those who read this book and see everyone else but themselves within the pages. It's too bad, because those souls will lose out on the rich treasure-trove of wisdom that would serve to bolster their faith and strengthen their resolve to make a marked difference in Body life and ministry - one to another and to the world. The points the author makes (and deconstructs, rebuilds) will serve to be practical application. It's well done.
Mr. Joyner, keep following the Lord's voice for He's called you to speak forth a difficult message. Even so, know that more and more are beginning to hear, and to listen. This book is a much-needed blessing for the broken and battered Church the world over.

A Rigorous Examination of the Bible'sGreat Prophetic ThemesReview Date: 2001-10-12
This is a must read for any christian looking to understand and be prepared for the events that will soon take place.
exceptional overview of God's prophetic plan for the worldReview Date: 2004-12-08
This book really helped unify the various prophetic themes of the Bible in my mind. It helps you see God's unified plan for the world as it unfolds through the Word of God. After you read it,you'll still want a copy around that you can reference. Although written for the layperson, to read this book does require a decent working Bible knowledge and some familiarity with Bible prophecy. Otherwise, it might overwhelm some people.

Ezekiel for non- violent activistsReview Date: 2005-04-01
I especially enjoyed Berrigan's poetic style; albeit, I wish that some of his words were not so arcane. Boberly's art is also very good.
Non-violent activists, if you want to know about street theater, read this book!
POWERFUL PROPHECY FROM THE DUST AND THE DIRT AND REJECTED CALLING US HOME TO GOD'S PEACE AND PRAYER FOR PEACEReview Date: 2007-12-12
As the Reverend Father Daniel Berrigan states his thesis of this excellent, relatively brief commentary from ten years ago:
"Ezekiel, gloomy partisan of doom! ( . . .) Inevitably in view of his diatribes, he is taken for a renegade by the priestly caste" (of which he is member) "-- who, noblesse oblige, much prefer that the fraternity maintain a common front (p. xii)." much as today . . .
Bascially the Reverend Father Berrigan addresses three questions:
"1. What does it mean to confront the idols?
2. What is the spiritual impact of the idols on ourselves, whose only prospect is exile, or worse -- who are actually driven forth? and
3. Have we, whether in exile or at home, submitted to an amoral assimilation, covertly or openly welcoming the idols, whether foreign or domestic?"
The Reverend Father Berrigan employs exegetical methodologies as ancient as Saint Ignatius, as new as the Catholic comunidades de base spoken of so much as hope and future for our one, holy Catholic and apostolic Church by such authoritative and South American Catholic theologians as the Reverend Father Gustavo Gutierrez (see for example his landmark TeologĂa De La Liberacion) and Friar Leonardo Boff (see his Eclesiogenesis - Las Comunidades De Base Reinventan La Iglesia). For more on this phenomenon of Catholic ecclesiology, please see Teologia de la liberacion y comunidades cristianas de base: IV Congreso Internacional Ecumenico de Teologia, Sao Paulo, 1980 (Materiales) and El Evangelio En Solentiname (Coleccion Estructuras y Procesos).
Thus the Reverend Father Berrigan in producing this brilliant and powerful piece of lectio divina gathered a faithful Catholic base community in hermeneutic reflection and dialogue upon the many and difficult chapters of Ezekiel. Father Berrigan as a life long and honored member of the Society of Jesus, formed a synergistic powerhouse in combining this newer (yet primordial) method of collegial prayer with the guided Retreat methodology which Saint Ignatius of Loyola practiced in his Ejercicios Espirituales. The beautiful, nutritious fruit of this efficacious methodology we are blessed to receive here in this strong book of prophecy and call to repentance for each one of us today.
We feel Father Berrigan's essential identification in solidarity with the lonely and powerful prophet Ezekiel, rejected by his society, ignored by his religious, even despised, yet compelled to preach powerfully the call to the true Faith and orthopraxis. Thus, Father Berrigan finds in Ezekiel "A discredited priest amid a culture whose elders and priests are icons of power and rectitude." Thus this book calls us to cease worshipping our idols and return violently to the God of Compassionate Love and Peace with Justice, and finds the infiltration of idols where we least expect them. Read this Biblical book. Find release from the idols of this dark day. Enter the freedom of the true covenant of peace and of nonviolent, meek, humble Love. Love your enemies. Read this book. Hear the strong call of the prophet, then and now, and act upon this Holy and Righteous Word.
