This Book and Bob's class are the keys that have missing for meReview Date: 2008-03-08
I attended Bob's class and have been excited about getting all this work done and out to be published. 101 Reasons Why You Must Write a Book book is fabulous and gives me everything I need to know to be able to move forward.
I am buying a couple more copies to give to others who are writing as well. The DVD set is wonderful as well. Thanks Bob. I won't let a few typos get in the way of learning from you.

But, maybe that's the point. This book is proof positive that 'anyone' can write and publish a book. For these authors, quality is definitely not an issue.
Bottom line: Don't waste your money.

Essential for public boards seeking to lead strategicallyReview Date: 1999-01-26
I winced as I read Carver's description of reactive boards trapped in the "approval syndrome" in which boards rely on staff to bring issues and recommendations to them for approval. This pervasive practice not only takes board members out of the driver's seat, but it confuses the lines of accountability between the board and the CEO for the organization.
Carver offers a framework for changing all that by forcing the board to rethink all of its policy with an eye toward board-determined policies that operate at the highest level possible. In Carver's approach only four types of policies need to be set by the board: 1) "Ends" policies (board expectations), 2) Executive Limitations (the "don'ts" for the organization), 3) Board process policies and 4) Board-CEO relationship policies. *Everything* you need to be involved in can be fit into one of these four categories.
Want to learn how to stop working at the staff level and how to help your organization find a true sense of direction? Carver's book offers practical and straightforward ways of getting there.

A wealth of information!Review Date: 2003-07-09
The book is written for a wide and general audience, with basics on the craft business industry, sales/marketing/promotion, legal info, even computer systems/information! The chapters are written in such a way that if you don't need to read one (let's say that a particular chapter might not pertain to your situation) you can skip it and move on without missing a beat! Brabec writes in an easily comprehensible form, in digestable segments, and gives lots of clear cut examples and success stories.
This book works as a great starting point and reference tool. Highly recommended for adults of all ages, for both genders and long-time or newbie crafters/artisans!

Read this book before you vote on the next bond issue!Review Date: 1998-08-30
Right now there are two huge holes in downtown Detroit. Any day now, we'll begin filling them with our tax dollars so they can fail to end the years of decay this city has undergone. It's possible that if anyone had cared to study the history of this practice, like deMause and Cagan have, we could have avoided this whole mess.
Maybe another team can keep its Tiger Stadium because of this book.
Trenchant analysis of a troubling phenomenonReview Date: 2002-08-04
Cagan and deMause paint a picture of a playing field that is decidedly not even. Local communities are pitted in a struggle against powerful coalitions of wealthy sports moguls, politicos, real estate developers and other related businesspeople (which oftentimes includes the local media, since sports helps sells newspapers and TV advertising) over the allocation of increasingly scarce public tax revenues. The authors show that public education in particular seems to bear the brunt of the burden whenever the community loses the fight and sees its funds siphoned away to build these private sports palaces.
Cagan and deMause detail specific cases where owners have successfully blackmailed communities and strong-armed local politicians. These case studies reveal a formula that the authors term "the art of the steal", a step-by-step game plan for owners who plan to fleece their communities for free sports structures. Shamelessly exploiting the community's emotional attachments to the home team and ruthlessly working the good-ole-boy business networks to which local politicians are beholden are a few of the key ingredients that helps to make these schemes work, the authors claim.
Cagan and deMause interview individuals associated with a few of the grass-roots organizations that sprung up to oppose various stadium initiatives. While such groups often experience initial success, they are usually overwhelmed in the long run by the persistence of the powerful forces lined up against them. Citing numerous opinion polls and voter referendums where citizens strenuously opposed the use of tax dollars to fund privately-owned stadiums, the authors suggest that the reason owners win more often than not is due to the greater political power at their disposal, and not the democratic process.
Indeed, the cost to society as a whole is often great. In Chapter 8, "Bad Neigbors", Cagan and deMause brilliantly relate baseball's current preoccupation with the recreation of a mythic past (through the construction of "old time" ballparks such as Camden Yards in Baltimore) with the real decay of America's inner cities. The authors discover that many urban centers have actually been subjected to a corporate "structural adjustment" program akin to those experienced in many Third World nations. They contend that a core problem is a system of private enterprise that privileges the profit motive at the expense of ordinary people.
The authors wrap up the book by alluding to signs that the public stadium-building frenzy may be slowing down, but sadly this appears to be the case mainly because most cities large enough to support a sports franchise have already been tapped out. Fortunately, the authors propose common-sense ideas that, if legislated, could discourage some corporate welfare give-aways. For example, the authors wonder why recipients shouldn't be required to report the public subsidies they receive as taxable income? This would vastly diminish the value of such subsidies and encourage private financing for these deals, which is where the authors contend they rightly belong.
I strongly recommend this book for both sports fans and non-sports fans alike who may be pondering how our society's infatuation with sports fantasy may be harming the real world in which we live.

Outstanding brain food for up and coming CEO'sReview Date: 1999-05-03
It is easy to read and fast. The topics are arranged from A to Z with a one page snap shot of the "answer" to business question and organization issues. While other books attempt to help you understand everything from your inner business self to business lessons through the eyes of a piss ant (remember those who can't do teach, or in most cases write books on the subject), Townsend's book should be considered the manual. Be ensured that if you follow these simple practices your company will be on the way to the top 100 (the company I work for lives by this book and we are ranker number 5 by Fortune this year, our first year under review).
For those fortunant enough to be stepping out on your own, this book is a reminded and a refresher for you to being successful. Interesting that a book writen first in the early 70's then updated in 85 still holds so true for today, ie not a business fad book. After all the bible is still on the best seller list.
Good job and thanks to Robert Townsend.

Then in the 90's, I were so happy to find Further Up The Organisation, an updated version of the one I lost and I bought 2 copies. So far I have only worked for 2 organisations during the last 14 years but have received 6 promotions so far, now already the Chief Executive since 1995 at the age of 32. Thanks to Robert Townsend.
The books offer solutions on various subjects at work, but more importantly stimulate the readers to agree or to disagree to the ideas and prompt them to think or re-think how and why they are doing that way.
Until a few years ago, everytime when I was in a bookstore, I would go to the relevant section to look for further updates of the book.
The publisher should re-print the book and sell them again.

You get several studies that show which types of businesses profit most from Yellow Pages advertising, and which don't.
He gives a convincing rational for which directories to place your ad in (assuming your area has several).
You also get sample ads to use as templates.
This book covers everything about Yellow Pages advertising. Yellow Pages advertising tends to be the largest advertising expense for small businesses. Using the ideas in this book will easily pay for the cost of the book the first month in the Yellow Pages.
The only flaw I found was that, if Mr. Mahar has Seminars on Yellow Pages advertising, I probably wouldn't go; I just don't see what I could learn that isn't already covered in the book.
The most comprehensive business guide to date.Review Date: 2007-04-03
Barry Maher takes the guesswork out of how much ad space to buy and what categories best fit every business in "Getting The Most From Your Yellow Pages Advertising". Maher shows the most cost effective way to advertise, which yellow pages are the best bet for advertising, who is and who isn't being truthful, and gives the straight low down on how to maximize advertising dollars for every type of business, small or large.
Color or black and white? Saving money or betting the farm? Maher details the ins and outs of every facet of yellow pages advertising, from art work to strategies and headings to scams. Turning years of experience in buying and selling advertising into a simple, easy to follow guidebook, Maher demystifies yellow pages advertising in a concise, easy to understand compendium that no business should be without.

Worth its Weight in Yellow Gold!Review Date: 2007-04-06
Though certainly geared toward business owners, writing professionals will also find a tremendous amount of applicable information. Maher gives a brief history and evolution of yellow pages, then moves through a logical progression of determining need and on through the process of the finished product. For writing professionals, read through this and then thumb through the yellow pages and see the enormity of a market just screaming for professional assistance. I believe this a market largely untapped by commercial writers.
An outstanding feature of this book, and one found far too seldom, is an abundance of margin space for making notes and good, thick paper that highlighting doesn't bleed through. Business owners will pay for the price of this book a hundred times over and copywriters will find a resource for a niche market rich with possibilities.

A nice introductory tome regarding fundraising in the nonprofit sector in America. 1 thumb up!Review Date: 2007-12-25
I liked this book. It provided me with my introduction to the nonprofit world and fundraising for nonprofits back in 2004. It's not written by one person. And as a result, it is not tightly written. In fact, I think there are 27 different contributors to this book. Maybe I counted wrong? But this book is an excellent introduction to the ins and outs of fundraising in America as we know it today. It has 7 chapters:
1. Fundraising: Context and philosophy
2. Fundamentals of successful fundraising
3. Building blocks for successful fundraising
4. Sources of fundraising
5. Successful fundraising methods
6. Managing successful fundraising
7. Ethics, stewardship, and the future of the fundraising profession
I have read other books written by the following contributors to this book: Mal Warwick, Kim Klein, Kay Grace, and James Greenfield. And I've met and listened to Ted Hart who runs the nonprofit ePhilanthropy Foundation. I have gotten things from reading or listening to all these people. And my favorite fundraising book of all was written by Ms. Grace: Beyond Fundraising (ISBN: 0471707139). Kim Klein's "Fundraising for Social Change" (ISBN: 0787984558) comes in a close second.
What I liked the most about this book was the quality of writing and the breadth of coverage. It talks about annual giving programs, captial campaigns, endowment campaigns, and planned giving. It also covers ethics that fundraisers should adhere to. There is a lot to the art and science of raising funds for nonprofits. And this book seems to touch on much of it.
Don't expect to learn the specifics of how to do "an ask" in a major gift setting. Don't expect to be told how to manage a successful capital campaign, or to adeptly use the Internet as a fundraising tool. And I was happy there wasn't much if any coverage of grants and grant writing. Phew! But this book covers enough about everything that you can intelligently search out other books to supplement your read of this book. 4 stars!

An Inspirational Guide For Working At Home!Review Date: 1998-09-27
Readers will find Barbara Brabec's book an inspirational guide to help them establish a home-based business. She helps her readers to determine if a home business is right for them. She proceeds to guide them through the process of assessing their own situations, determining what kind of home business is right for them, developing an effective marketing strategy, and maintaining control once they get started.
Barbara offers readers recommendations on some of the home businesses they could start. According to her there are two kinds of businesses, product-oriented and service-oriented, both of which can be successfully operated from a home. She provides extensive listings of the possibilities that are available. Perhaps her readers could come up with some ideas of their own!
Barbara offers readers other important information they need to get started and to continue operating with as little trouble as possible. Essential information on topics such as copyright infringement, a crash course in business basics, concerns about MLM's (multi-level marketing), city ordinances governing home businesses, and taxes is provided to help readers avoid some of the pitfalls they could very well face. Extensive resource directories at the back of the book provide information about books, periodicals, organizations, and government agencies that can be of tremendous help to new business owners!
This is a well-rounded book that will inspire anyone to consider going into business for themselves at home. Barbara's desire to help others, a wealth of business ideas, tips and suggestions, and personal testimonies from her readers contribute to a very fine business book. Members of the online community will benefit from the help this book has to offer even though it does not specifically deal with online business practices. Highly recommended reading for anyone thinking about starting a business at home!
