Over the past 15 years I have written 5 technical manuals. My writings have been referenced in courts of law. The guide that Burnham and McCallum have created is an excellent starting point for someone just getting into non-fiction writing. Many of the points are basic but that was the point. They (both the points and the writers) make it easy for a person to believe they can in fact write a book. Other tips remind me that no matter how long you have been in this field there is always tricks you can pick up by staying current and listening to others. In my opinion, if a person has expertise in any particular field; with a little perspiration, persistence and this book a person can product a document that will establish their credentials

I have been sitting on a lot of literary material that is begging to be published. I didn't want to go the same route my Dad did when his 2 books were published in the old-fashioned way. They made no money for anyone but his publishers, but I had no clear direction for how to work with this material and market it. Now I do.

I attended Bob's class and have been excited about getting all this work done and out to be published. 101 Reasons Why You Must Write a Book book is fabulous and gives me everything I need to know to be able to move forward.

I am buying a couple more copies to give to others who are writing as well. The DVD set is wonderful as well. Thanks Bob. I won't let a few typos get in the way of learning from you.

I had high hopes for this book given the reviews here. But, it is such a dissapointment. The book is very poorly written. Clearly these authors were in such a rush to get this 'book' to print that they didn't even bother getting it edited. The poor grammar and nonexistent or inappropriate punctuation are so distracting that I've found myself unable to continue reading. It's like reading a bad high school essay.

But, maybe that's the point. This book is proof positive that 'anyone' can write and publish a book. For these authors, quality is definitely not an issue.

Bottom line: Don't waste your money.

Unlike most of the academic books that I have read on writing and publishing, this book gives the straight goods on how-to write, publish and promote a book. It is written for people who want to start writing now. I can open Bob Burnham and Jeff McCallum's book anywhere and find useful information. It is an important part of my reference library.

This book was the core piece of a radical change in our board room. It led us down the path we knew we wanted to go but didn't know how to get there. His model for board room organization could revolutionize boards of companies in transition, like those of the rural electric program in America. It's a road map for where you already know in your heart that you want to go.

Essential for public boards seeking to lead strategically

After 5 years on a local Board of Education I finally found a book that describes everything I know is wrong with board management practices in schools and nonprofit organizations. But that is the easy part. Carver offers sound alternatives to current practices that put the responsibility and the capability for strategic leadership right where it belongs--on the board.

I winced as I read Carver's description of reactive boards trapped in the "approval syndrome" in which boards rely on staff to bring issues and recommendations to them for approval. This pervasive practice not only takes board members out of the driver's seat, but it confuses the lines of accountability between the board and the CEO for the organization.

Carver offers a framework for changing all that by forcing the board to rethink all of its policy with an eye toward board-determined policies that operate at the highest level possible. In Carver's approach only four types of policies need to be set by the board: 1) "Ends" policies (board expectations), 2) Executive Limitations (the "don'ts" for the organization), 3) Board process policies and 4) Board-CEO relationship policies. *Everything* you need to be involved in can be fit into one of these four categories.

Want to learn how to stop working at the staff level and how to help your organization find a true sense of direction? Carver's book offers practical and straightforward ways of getting there.

Idealistic

The carver style of governance is a tad idealistic and perhaps overly optimistic. I have read everything Dr Carver has written concerning this field and enjoy this material at an academic level. But when it comes to operationalizing this model in boardrooms I've seen it fail time and time again. Not to say that the model is flawed because in fact the model is normative and conceptually complete. However it doesn't capture that element of reality from which, in my experience, the model requires - practicality and real-world application. Dr Carver's notion that Boards can do without Finance and Audit Committees is very naive. Most consultants from the chartered accountant genre are saying the complete opposite. In fact most government policy initiatives are moving toward more control of financial affairs of organizations for boards from charts of accounts to fiscal policy. So I don't think the elimination of Finance and Audit Committees is realistic nor is it a terribly bright suggestion. I guess my only crticism is that the carver model is far to idealistic and philosophical for a practical application in the form Dr Carver suggests. Sorry but a hybrid model of traditional Board governance and the carver model may work given the commitment required from directors to follow-though on everything suggested in that system of governance,

The world is full of experts at what is wrong with the things that we do. Dr. Carver has a rock-solid, well thought out suggestion concerning how to do it right. One reviewer complained that Dr. Carver's suggestions are not realistic. Right is not often realistic, but right is always right. It's far better to start with an ideal and compromise from that point than to capitulate from the outset. Boards that Make a Difference is well worth reading.

Mr. Carver presents a very readable way of looking at how governing boards should work. His theories are logical and his arguments pursuasive. He offers board members an intellectual framework to consider how their organizations are running. The book is prescriptive, but not preachy. I was very surprised to find it sensible after hearing so much hype from "converts" to his method.

Messrs Grubb & Lamb have given a refreshing angle on a subject that has received way too much of the same angle and no fresh perspectives. This very straightforward and well researched work is void of buzzwords and "7-step" processes so common in sponsored, self-promoting tomes. Although the book has its "six ways to profit" from m&a, it's thorough, well composed and unlike other m&a texts, gives those of us not going through a merger something to think about when our competitors are experiencing "merger chaos". This is a book I've gone back to several times and referenced its rich ideas as well as lengthy appendices of data. Highly recommend.

The authors do a fine job expanding on the ideas of others. Savvy executives have known about this for years. I recall an article in USA Today back in 1996 or 1997 about some consultants who were peddling the same idea as corporate judo or ju jitsu. So while the idea is not new, they've done a good job developing an approach to capitalize on the chaos following mergers.

Not much new -- worthy of an article -- interesting spin

I thought this book would provide thoughtful insights into defending one's market in the throes of consolidation. It has some good ideas and some flawed but it's not really a book's worth. Marketing due diligence, in which merging firms take a market-focused approach to consolidation has already been detailed at length by its developers -Clemente and Greenspan in "Winning at Mergers & Acquisitions" as well as in articles in HBR and M&A magazine. Grubb and Lamb recommend poaching employees and clients (magnet strategy) from firms in turmoil, which is a great idea but not really new. It's discussed in detail in "Five Frogs" by Feldman and Spratt, again from the standpoint of being a weakness to the acquired firm. Most importantly, Grubb and Lamb recommend using a survival threat to jump-start internal change. I've seen it work -- but it can also send employees running for the competition as they fear the loss of their own security. All in all, this book is mostly common sense. Much of the good, bad and ugly has already been written by the thoughtleaders in this field --Clemente/Greenspan, Marks/Mirvis, and Feldman/Spratt. Their strategies for planning, implementing and integrating acquisitions are both pioneering and time-tested. This book seems to have found a novel way to flip that knowledge bank on its head and give an outsider's viewpoint. The authors deserve credit for that. Lastly, the authors cite combining strategies as a strategy -- which I find a bit weak. 3 stars for a good idea.

Creative Cash by Barbara Brabec is THE book to have if you are considering turning your crafting hobby into a business and/or profession.

The book is written for a wide and general audience, with basics on the craft business industry, sales/marketing/promotion, legal info, even computer systems/information! The chapters are written in such a way that if you don't need to read one (let's say that a particular chapter might not pertain to your situation) you can skip it and move on without missing a beat! Brabec writes in an easily comprehensible form, in digestable segments, and gives lots of clear cut examples and success stories.

This book works as a great starting point and reference tool. Highly recommended for adults of all ages, for both genders and long-time or newbie crafters/artisans!

Hi - My name is Opal Leasure, The Apron Strings Country Home Party Lady. Barbara's book, Creative Cash is chock full of helpful hints and downhome advice on getting your crafts business going and growing. As one of the small business entrepreneurs mentioned in the book, I feel the author does an excellent job of showing others "how-to" sell, market and otherwise, expand, their home based business endeavors. Creative Cash outlines hundreds of ways to market crafts including party plan (hostess) selling, home shows and boutiques. It also reflects on how one thing can lead to another, in life, and your own small business. Many listed, myself included, went on to self publish their own how-to books. I was very happy to note in the book, that Barbara included a resource section listing the professional crafters mentioned in the book. This is a good way for readers to benefit from the talents, ideas and creativity of many people. I urge others to order Creative Cash - it helps readers realize how gifted they really are and gives them incentives to get started with their own home based business plans. With Barbara's easy to read text, the book is a plus for every crafter's reference library.

As a life-long resident of the Detroit area, I know this tale all too well. It is one of lies, cheating, embezzlement, and ultimately disappointment.

Right now there are two huge holes in downtown Detroit. Any day now, we'll begin filling them with our tax dollars so they can fail to end the years of decay this city has undergone. It's possible that if anyone had cared to study the history of this practice, like deMause and Cagan have, we could have avoided this whole mess.

Maybe another team can keep its Tiger Stadium because of this book.

Trenchant analysis of a troubling phenomenon

Review Date: 2002-08-04
"Field of Schemes" is an accessible but no less incisive critique of an often overlooked aspect of the corporate welfare phenomenon: professional sports team owners and the seemingly insatiable lust for obtaining ever-more-lavish stadiums to be built at public expense. Sports fans Joanna Cagan and Neil deMause combine original and secondary research with interviews to successfully chronicle and analyse the public stadium building boom in an entertaining yet thought-provoking manner.

Cagan and deMause paint a picture of a playing field that is decidedly not even. Local communities are pitted in a struggle against powerful coalitions of wealthy sports moguls, politicos, real estate developers and other related businesspeople (which oftentimes includes the local media, since sports helps sells newspapers and TV advertising) over the allocation of increasingly scarce public tax revenues. The authors show that public education in particular seems to bear the brunt of the burden whenever the community loses the fight and sees its funds siphoned away to build these private sports palaces.

Cagan and deMause detail specific cases where owners have successfully blackmailed communities and strong-armed local politicians. These case studies reveal a formula that the authors term "the art of the steal", a step-by-step game plan for owners who plan to fleece their communities for free sports structures. Shamelessly exploiting the community's emotional attachments to the home team and ruthlessly working the good-ole-boy business networks to which local politicians are beholden are a few of the key ingredients that helps to make these schemes work, the authors claim.

Cagan and deMause interview individuals associated with a few of the grass-roots organizations that sprung up to oppose various stadium initiatives. While such groups often experience initial success, they are usually overwhelmed in the long run by the persistence of the powerful forces lined up against them. Citing numerous opinion polls and voter referendums where citizens strenuously opposed the use of tax dollars to fund privately-owned stadiums, the authors suggest that the reason owners win more often than not is due to the greater political power at their disposal, and not the democratic process.

Indeed, the cost to society as a whole is often great. In Chapter 8, "Bad Neigbors", Cagan and deMause brilliantly relate baseball's current preoccupation with the recreation of a mythic past (through the construction of "old time" ballparks such as Camden Yards in Baltimore) with the real decay of America's inner cities. The authors discover that many urban centers have actually been subjected to a corporate "structural adjustment" program akin to those experienced in many Third World nations. They contend that a core problem is a system of private enterprise that privileges the profit motive at the expense of ordinary people.

The authors wrap up the book by alluding to signs that the public stadium-building frenzy may be slowing down, but sadly this appears to be the case mainly because most cities large enough to support a sports franchise have already been tapped out. Fortunately, the authors propose common-sense ideas that, if legislated, could discourage some corporate welfare give-aways. For example, the authors wonder why recipients shouldn't be required to report the public subsidies they receive as taxable income? This would vastly diminish the value of such subsidies and encourage private financing for these deals, which is where the authors contend they rightly belong.

I strongly recommend this book for both sports fans and non-sports fans alike who may be pondering how our society's infatuation with sports fantasy may be harming the real world in which we live.

I like sports a lot and thought I wouldn't enjoy this book. Before reading Field of Schemes, I thought it would bore me with trivial facts and numbers and I thought corporate welfare to the sports industry was the least of America's worries. I was very wrong. The authors have exposed some of the deepest current urban conspiracies between newspaper owners, local politicians and real estate developers.

I know a lot about politics, economics, urban development and corporate welfare, but I was amazed at what I learned from Field of Schemes. And everything is irrefutably documented.

This is one of the last books the "powers that be" want people to read. Read it. Every concerned citizen or activist in the US needs to know what is in this book.

The book is a must-read for any community considering investing in a private, for-profit sports facility. Nevertheless, it provides a less than comprehensive perspective. As a member of the up and coming CEO's of the world (my plan), Further Up The Orcanization is an execellent piece of stimuli for those of us who like to engage our brains in the big picture. If you are one that is fortunate enough to be able to see the forest through the tree and understand how the total solution is the right solution then this book is for you.

It is easy to read and fast. The topics are arranged from A to Z with a one page snap shot of the "answer" to business question and organization issues. While other books attempt to help you understand everything from your inner business self to business lessons through the eyes of a piss ant (remember those who can't do teach, or in most cases write books on the subject), Townsend's book should be considered the manual. Be ensured that if you follow these simple practices your company will be on the way to the top 100 (the company I work for lives by this book and we are ranker number 5 by Fortune this year, our first year under review).

For those fortunant enough to be stepping out on your own, this book is a reminded and a refresher for you to being successful. Interesting that a book writen first in the early 70's then updated in 85 still holds so true for today, ie not a business fad book. After all the bible is still on the best seller list.

Good job and thanks to Robert Townsend.

I first read Up The Organisation by Robert Townsend in 1984 when I was still in college. It started to help me establish my very own management style and ways of doing things. I lent the book to a good friend of mine 2 years later and have never seen the book again.

Then in the 90's, I were so happy to find Further Up The Organisation, an updated version of the one I lost and I bought 2 copies. So far I have only worked for 2 organisations during the last 14 years but have received 6 promotions so far, now already the Chief Executive since 1995 at the age of 32. Thanks to Robert Townsend.

The books offer solutions on various subjects at work, but more importantly stimulate the readers to agree or to disagree to the ideas and prompt them to think or re-think how and why they are doing that way.

Until a few years ago, everytime when I was in a bookstore, I would go to the relevant section to look for further updates of the book.

The publisher should re-print the book and sell them again.

I found some very good insights in this book, however felt it missed a few things. Firstly, some of the insights were very good - eg. "once a heading develops display advertising, in-column ads can no longer compete" and "do not buy an ad more than one size bigger than the competition" (both page 126). But then, in the copy section for example, it only has a few paragraphs on developing and communicating a unique selling proposition - that is, why a customer should do business with you and not your competition. I would have thought that this deserved more attention than just that! Further, I recently did a long copy style advertorial for a cleaner that pulled in 9 times more response than the client's dot pointed ad the previous year (yet this book only talks about the dot point style)... admitedly, advertorial does not always work... but I would have thought this option may have at least got a mention. Finally, there are only a handful of ads in this book... if they do another edition of this, more sample ads (for us to swipe) really helps us learn better... bottom line, this book is worth the price, but it did miss a few points and needs more sample ads to help you translate theory into operation... but I was perhaps a bit dissapointed because it just didn't live up to my expectations...

Impossible not to profit from this book.

I wasn't expecting much from this book. It's written by a former Yellow Pages salesperson, so I expected a sales letter in book form. But then I found out it was the BEST Yellow Pages salesperson, and I decided to order the book. 300 pages of pure information. Mr. Mahar shows you why Yellow Pages advertising may NOT be for you. That was a surprise.
You get several studies that show which types of businesses profit most from Yellow Pages advertising, and which don't.
He gives a convincing rational for which directories to place your ad in (assuming your area has several).
You also get sample ads to use as templates.
This book covers everything about Yellow Pages advertising. Yellow Pages advertising tends to be the largest advertising expense for small businesses. Using the ideas in this book will easily pay for the cost of the book the first month in the Yellow Pages.
The only flaw I found was that, if Mr. Mahar has Seminars on Yellow Pages advertising, I probably wouldn't go; I just don't see what I could learn that isn't already covered in the book.

The most comprehensive business guide to date.

When small businesses think of advertising, they think newspapers, billboards and expensive media campaigns. Since the invention of the telephone and the yellow pages, there are other, less expensive options, but only if you know what you're doing.

Barry Maher takes the guesswork out of how much ad space to buy and what categories best fit every business in "Getting The Most From Your Yellow Pages Advertising". Maher shows the most cost effective way to advertise, which yellow pages are the best bet for advertising, who is and who isn't being truthful, and gives the straight low down on how to maximize advertising dollars for every type of business, small or large.

Color or black and white? Saving money or betting the farm? Maher details the ins and outs of every facet of yellow pages advertising, from art work to strategies and headings to scams. Turning years of experience in buying and selling advertising into a simple, easy to follow guidebook, Maher demystifies yellow pages advertising in a concise, easy to understand compendium that no business should be without.

If you don't know anything about yellow pages advertising this book will give you a good starting point. If you have some marketing experience and are hoping to get invaluable insights then you will probably be disappointed. Certainly the book is well written and helpful. But for the price, I was expecting a lot more.

Worth its Weight in Yellow Gold!

I would have never thought a book titled GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR YELLOW PAGE ADVERTISING would make for compelling reading, but I was wrong. Author and former yellow page rep Barry Maher grabbed my interest on the first page and held it firmly to the end. I would consider this book essential for small business owners or anyone who is interesting in producing yellow page copy.

Though certainly geared toward business owners, writing professionals will also find a tremendous amount of applicable information. Maher gives a brief history and evolution of yellow pages, then moves through a logical progression of determining need and on through the process of the finished product. For writing professionals, read through this and then thumb through the yellow pages and see the enormity of a market just screaming for professional assistance. I believe this a market largely untapped by commercial writers.

An outstanding feature of this book, and one found far too seldom, is an abundance of margin space for making notes and good, thick paper that highlighting doesn't bleed through. Business owners will pay for the price of this book a hundred times over and copywriters will find a resource for a niche market rich with possibilities.

This is a very deep book on fundraising and the content (short of the use of the internet) is very comprehensive. A very good reference and deep read.

I'm disappointed in this textbook because it does not provide much bang for the buck. I believe that the text could have been half as thick, half as expensive and provide no less information than it does.

A must read for the fundraising professional!

Whether you've been in the fundraising profession for 10 minutes or 10 years, do yourself a favour and read this book. It will make you proud to be part of the tradition of philanthropy. It will inspire and guide you. You will see yourself and the volunteers and donors you work with in a whole new light. Don't put it in your library. Keep it on your desk. The first time you read it, and you will read it joyfully from cover to cover, keep pen and paper handy. You will find yourself making a list of things you need and want to do. Achieving Excellence in Fundraising is thoughtful and thought-provoking. It is the place where the theory, practice, philosophy and spirituality of a great tradition meet.

Like many in the Jossey Bass series, Tempel's work is thorough and well-written, covering all important aspects of fundraising. A great introductory guide.

A nice introductory tome regarding fundraising in the nonprofit sector in America. 1 thumb up!

I liked this book. It provided me with my introduction to the nonprofit world and fundraising for nonprofits back in 2004. It's not written by one person. And as a result, it is not tightly written. In fact, I think there are 27 different contributors to this book. Maybe I counted wrong? But this book is an excellent introduction to the ins and outs of fundraising in America as we know it today. It has 7 chapters:

1. Fundraising: Context and philosophy
2. Fundamentals of successful fundraising
3. Building blocks for successful fundraising
4. Sources of fundraising
5. Successful fundraising methods
6. Managing successful fundraising
7. Ethics, stewardship, and the future of the fundraising profession

I have read other books written by the following contributors to this book: Mal Warwick, Kim Klein, Kay Grace, and James Greenfield. And I've met and listened to Ted Hart who runs the nonprofit ePhilanthropy Foundation. I have gotten things from reading or listening to all these people. And my favorite fundraising book of all was written by Ms. Grace: Beyond Fundraising (ISBN: 0471707139). Kim Klein's "Fundraising for Social Change" (ISBN: 0787984558) comes in a close second.

What I liked the most about this book was the quality of writing and the breadth of coverage. It talks about annual giving programs, captial campaigns, endowment campaigns, and planned giving. It also covers ethics that fundraisers should adhere to. There is a lot to the art and science of raising funds for nonprofits. And this book seems to touch on much of it.

Don't expect to learn the specifics of how to do "an ask" in a major gift setting. Don't expect to be told how to manage a successful capital campaign, or to adeptly use the Internet as a fundraising tool. And I was happy there wasn't much if any coverage of grants and grant writing. Phew! But this book covers enough about everything that you can intelligently search out other books to supplement your read of this book. 4 stars!

Every day countless numbers of people go into business for themselves from the comfort of their own homes. With the advances being made in computer and communications technology many are finding this a much easier task to accomplish. Barbara Brabec has written Homemade Money to provide detailed help to those persons desiring to work at home so they can set up and successfully operate their own businesses.

Readers will find Barbara Brabec's book an inspirational guide to help them establish a home-based business. She helps her readers to determine if a home business is right for them. She proceeds to guide them through the process of assessing their own situations, determining what kind of home business is right for them, developing an effective marketing strategy, and maintaining control once they get started.

Barbara offers readers recommendations on some of the home businesses they could start. According to her there are two kinds of businesses, product-oriented and service-oriented, both of which can be successfully operated from a home. She provides extensive listings of the possibilities that are available. Perhaps her readers could come up with some ideas of their own!

Barbara offers readers other important information they need to get started and to continue operating with as little trouble as possible. Essential information on topics such as copyright infringement, a crash course in business basics, concerns about MLM's (multi-level marketing), city ordinances governing home businesses, and taxes is provided to help readers avoid some of the pitfalls they could very well face. Extensive resource directories at the back of the book provide information about books, periodicals, organizations, and government agencies that can be of tremendous help to new business owners!

This is a well-rounded book that will inspire anyone to consider going into business for themselves at home. Barbara's desire to help others, a wealth of business ideas, tips and suggestions, and personal testimonies from her readers contribute to a very fine business book. Members of the online community will benefit from the help this book has to offer even though it does not specifically deal with online business practices. Highly recommended reading for anyone thinking about starting a business at home!

This book is a great job. This is a kind of encyclopedia of home businesses. You can really find how to select, start, manage, market, and multiply the profits of business at home. But almost all the reference information ablolutely useless outside the United States. Maybe, for foreigners from all over the globe this Barbara Brabec's book is an inspirational guide to dare to create your own home business. But for the first you need to collect extra corresponding reference information for your local country -- on law, banks, accounts, bookkeeping and so on.
