Excellent Guide for Gift Shops
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-20
I enjoyed reading and then putting to use the fantastic tips listed in this book. The book started out by listing how to set up a small shop and moved through to include an sample handbook for employees. Many books are written by journalists or writers who research topics but this was written by someone who has been there and done that with great success. I learned a lot from the real-world stories and information she provided. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is either running a store for a non-profit or working in a store or starting one. Great way to learn from experience.

How to turn your backyard hobby into a money making venture
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-27
One of several how to books from Lee Sturdivant, this book is an enjoyable look at how to make a buck in your backyard. There are a lot of basic concepts here that are important to master in order to make a success of your homegrown herb business.

Written in a straight forward and easy to follow manner, this book is the written experience of those who know how to take advantage of the local demand for herbs and herb products.

There are chapters on which herbs to grow and how to sell both fresh cut herbs and potted plants. The advice to keep it simple at first and let the business grow itself is right on the money.

Also, the emphasis on a quality product delivered in a reliable manner is an important business motto.

Whether you have some extra herbs now or want to plan what to grow in the future, this book will help you, inspire you and give you the confidence to get the job done.

A thorough examination of the dangers of impure religion
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-12
Sinclair writes a harsh criticism of the corruption, selfishness, and manipulation of organized religion of the West. His critique was written in the early 20th Century and also looks at the history of some of the larger worldwide religions as he pinpoints their negative behavior. Sinclair focuses on the errors of religion while lauding the virtuous attributes of Christ and those like him.

Sinclair shines a light on the historical bonds between powerful religion, governments, rulers and industry leaders to serve their own selfish desires. He admittedly writes as a socialist advocating revolution for the sake of the downtrodden and laborers. His philosophy is socialism in its purist form...for the sake of the people not the elite.

His examples of religious wrongs are many and all emphasize the fault of those who have abused religion not humble believers.

The final chapter of the book provides the reader with Sinclair's hopes for the future...that is a revolution of thought, science and government that will lead to freedom and advancement for all...a bit naive perhaps its main fault.

As a Christian, this book was a good read for me and inspired me to examine my attitudes and behavior towards others in and out of the church. Christians may be turned off by the criticism of the church in general, but those who read it will recognize that the criticism is valid and helpful to honest believers who want to imitate Christ. Sinclair differs on some of the historical truths of the Bible, but these mentions are tangents and not poignant to the theme of the book.

A must read for the history of science and technology
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-07
The Profits of Science takes a look at how technology in America has been developed in the 20th century. It looks at our forward thinking process from the 1939 world's fair and the advent of government in research during the Manhattan Project of World War 2. The rise of the big corporation (Du Pont, RCA, AT&T) combined with the machine shop culture of the Edison's and Tesla's gave rise to the modern R&D labs. Television was developed entirely within the context of the private sector and groups like RCA attempted to create monopolies based on their scientific knowledge. Occasionally the government would step in to regulate but more often than not groups like AT&T would find ways around the antitrust suits especially during the Reagan years. The transistor was the first real development that proved wildly successful out of the Bell Labs. This work was done primarily with venture capitalists which contrasted with the government funding of old. The early work of venture capitalists was trained on the stock market and looked towards mergers and acquisitions as the model for what to invest in. The computer would be the first chance to change that strategy and look at applied science. The computer proposed a difficult problem for engineers and business men. The capabilities were doubling with each new advancement under Moore's law but the prices were falling at a rapid rate. Companies ran into the problem of making money in a market where your price is falling. The way these companies began was through generous venture capitalist support of Arthur Rock. Many of these graduates came out of Stanford and began working with companies like Intel and Hewlett Packard only to leave and start their own. This was a slightly similar pattern to the pharmaceuticals that focused on chemists initially to create drug compounds that could be sold. The pendulum is swinging back towards biologist with the latest biotechnology craze. The evolution of technology as described by Teitelman shows the machine shop entrepreneur being replaced by the well funded R&D labs of corporations. Even those would be displaced by the federal governments funding. The modern era sees a return to the entrepreneur but this time he is funded by VC's. Overall Teitelman paints a very clear picture of technological development and does it in a remarkably short amount of pages. This is a very important contribution to the history of business and technology and I highly recommend it to all who are interested in those fields.

The Marriage of Parachurch, Church, and Denomination?
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-25
It is time to take a new and unprejudiced look at the parachurch and its relationship to church and denomination. This book makes a great contribution to this effort!

North America is estimated to have more than 350,000 congregations. Alongside these congregations, there are estimated to be as many as 100,000 parachurch organizations.

This book talks about the dramatic reshaping of the North American religious world that is happening through an ever increasing and ever growing collection of parachurch organizations. This is the "only book to look at the parachurch movement as a whole and describe what it is, where it came from, how it operates, who supports it, and what its future is likely to be." [xiv]

The research that led to this book uncovers the movement's roots and clarifies the boundaries of the parachurch. The book is divided into four sections: What is the parachurch and why is it thriving? Who makes up the parachurch? How can the parachurch enlarge its impact? Where is the parachurch headed?

An increasing percentage of services bought or used by congregations will come from the parachurch world rather than the denominational world. Denominations may actually broker many of these parachurch services. However, congregations are also willing to go directly to parachurch organizations to receive desired services. This book will either open up your eyes to this reality, or confirm what you have already knew about this reality.
