We typically think of our learning years as those spent in traditional educational institutions and yet to be current in business and in life, we must be continually seeking out new knowledge. Learning for Profit is filled with practical thinking on why we must be continually learning and how, in our time-starved lives, we can make room for learning. The author refers to his book as a "skinny book" in which he has removed the fluff and gotten right to the point. It's a quick read, but one you'll want to refer to often. A great motivator. I've taken many of the ideas, especially how to read a non-fiction book, and put them in place. It's enabled me to read more, faster and retain more. Great read.

Ideally, a nonprofit's executive director (ED) and board have time and energy to plan ahead for executive transition. Many board members have never had to face the daunting, time-consuming process involved in executive transition. ED turnover is more rapid than in years past, owing to reasons such as the increase in nonprofit organizations, changing (and often more demanding) board and stakeholder expectations of EDs, and increased willingness on the part of both boards and EDs to part company over issues of mission, policy, and management.
This book is an excellent description of the basics of executive director transition, including descriptions of factors that lead to executive director transition and checklists for board members, interim EDs, and others to use in making the transition in nonprofit management as painless as possible.
The authors cite seven "factors," or reasons, EDs leave a nonprofit: career ladder (advancing in a career), godfather ("they made me an offer I couldn't refuse"), gone fishing (the ED who is no longer attending to business), sudden loss (injury, illness, or death of the ED), burnout, cutting the mustard (not getting the job done), and the ten-year factor (many EDs sense it's time to leave, or board culture changes over time to signal to the ED that a change is needed). My consulting practice has included many clients with examples of overlapping factors (the burnout ten-year ED who no longer cuts the mustard and goes fishing), but the basic categories are valid and recognizable.
I especially like the chapter on building strong board-ED relationships. Hiring a new ED represents a fresh opportunity for the board and ED to clarify roles, set expectations, and build the trust and respect that are central to effective nonprofit governance. Of course, part of that process is building transition planning into the new ED's job responsibilities and the board's expectations for its own performance. After all, one goal of ED transition should be that it's easier the next time.

Tomi Ahnonen provides an excellent collection of thoughts and ideas to monetize 3G. Even though the telecom industry is struggling, 3G is going to happen. This is a must read for the planners at wireless carriers to chart out a plan for rolling out 3G services. Application developers will have a better appreciation of the value chain and how they fit in to the bigger picture. Coverage of topics is pretty good as well. I hope author maintains a website to update information in the book as things are bound to change and new strategies likely to emerge. In anycase, if you are someone who has anything to do with 3G, I would recommend the book. Thanks.

What I found very interesting about this book is that it is up to date as to what the lender requirements are for short sales. It explains what to do step by step to be able to have a positive outcome with the financial institutions.
The worksheets and all the tips throughout the book are very well thought out and explained.
This book shows investors how to take advantage of one of the most profitable investment opportunities out there. It seems like many people have decided to not pay attention to short sales because they think it could be to much work but this book illustrates in a very precise way exactly how to make money with a very small ammount of effort and no headaches.

A simple easy to read book. Even the starting real estate investor can take advantage of this manual. I am in the field of Real Estate for many years and was always afraid to get into short sales because I had heard it was a lot of work. A short period of time after reading this book me and my husband are already finalizing our first Short Sale deal with our neighbours property and will be making a very good return by laying down a very small ammount of capital.
I have to be sincere here, I was a bit confused with the title and thought it would just be another "how to get rich book", nevertheless I was wrong, the author really gives you very good tips. I really loved how he makes a huge emphasis on caring about other people and how this is the secret to success in the foreclosure business.
Something else I was very impressed with, was the section about how to lower the price of the property by ethically influencing the appraisal or BPO (Broker Opinion Value). Awesome book! Probably the best out there that is in the field of short sales and preforeclosure investing. AAA++

As a small real estate investor I didn't believe that I would have the resources that would allow me to profit in a large manner in this type of real estate market. This book really changed my conception of how much money I could make during this real estate crisis. The information in this book was easy to understand and allowed me to begin immediately to search for homes in the pre-foreclosure stage. I would highly recommend this book for people who are looking to enter the real estate field and also for the seasoned investor.

Lovely serene dolls you can really play with!

The author's purpose which led to this book was to develop modern-day cloth versions of old-time dolls, made of cloth so children could play with them. This pleases me very much, since I aim for all the dolls I make to be "playable."
Anita Holmes begins with chapters on constructing the dolls, making their hair and faces, and sewing their clothes. Then she gos on to give patterns for five types of dolls: the peg doll, based on wooden dolls but enlarged to 19" tall; the stick doll, a half-doll with a stick handle instead of legs; a jointed doll; a Victorian doll; and "Sally Anne," who is just herself and defies categorization.
Ms. Holmes gives variations on the basic patterns. The peg doll is shown as a palace guard with tall beaver hat, as well as a young girl. The jointed doll can be girl or boy. The dolls are made of unbleached muslin, which Ms. Holmes, who is British, calls "unbleached calico." The patterns in the book are full-sized. The dolls have a rounded, dimensional quality due to the shaping of the pattern pieces.
These dolls are very attractive. They have large expcressive eyes--she suggests painting the irises with nail polish and embroidering the eyelashes and eyebrows--and small but pleasant mouts. The dolls have a peaceful and serene look, with a storybook air. They are lovely even if you weren't wishing to make a modern replica of an antique doll.
