I would have never thought a book titled GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR YELLOW PAGE ADVERTISING would make for compelling reading, but I was wrong. Author and former yellow page rep Barry Maher grabbed my interest on the first page and held it firmly to the end. I would consider this book essential for small business owners or anyone who is interesting in producing yellow page copy.
Though certainly geared toward business owners, writing professionals will also find a tremendous amount of applicable information. Maher gives a brief history and evolution of yellow pages, then moves through a logical progression of determining need and on through the process of the finished product. For writing professionals, read through this and then thumb through the yellow pages and see the enormity of a market just screaming for professional assistance. I believe this a market largely untapped by commercial writers.
An outstanding feature of this book, and one found far too seldom, is an abundance of margin space for making notes and good, thick paper that highlighting doesn't bleed through. Business owners will pay for the price of this book a hundred times over and copywriters will find a resource for a niche market rich with possibilities.

This book has been a great resource to me, giving me all the necessary insider information to successfully put together and publish my first book all on my own. Aaron is very detailed in his approach and shows you exactly how to e.g. word your title optimally and format your graphics for print on demand. His website also complements the book perfectly with updates and links to excerpts of the new version.
Makes selling books on Amazon much easier.

Very good book at describing, in detail, the ins and outs of how to sell books on Amazon effectively. Not many books are so specific about "how" to do things and it is what I liked most about this book. Tremendously beneficial to me in promoting my own book!.. Highly recommended!!

You have read all the stories of how hard it is to get a big time New York publisher to publish your book, and author service firms like iUniverse and Xlibris seem to expensive..., so what do you do?
Well one alternative is Print On Demand (POD) by going direct to the source of most POD books, Lightning Source.
Shephard gives a high level primer with some very good tips and shortcuts on how to make the new publishing model work for you.
The goal of the book (and hopefully your publishing efforts) is to make money. Shepard never loses sight of this and points out that when dealing with the worlds largest online bookstore, there are some differences you should consider than traditional publishing methods.
Things like...
- Optimizing your cover for display on Amazon.
- How to deal effectively with PDF files.
- The practical economics of POD.
Already I have picked up a tip or two which more than justifies the cost of the book, and will speed up the process with my next book.
What you learn is it is really not that hard, you just need to learn what to do.
Shepard will take you by the hand and shorten your learning curve.
Cheers!

I read this book in one sitting on an airplane. It covers exactly the information I was looking for. The author uses the book itself as an example of many of the points he is making. It is clearly written and easy to understand. In a world where everyone is publishing, this book gives the insight needed to get your book on the market.
All along I have been thinking, I want to market my book on Amazon.com. I was delighted to see a book with the title that speaks exactly to my need.
You will find this book useful if:
- you are adventurous enough to become your own publisher
- you don't care about seeing your book in book stores
- you are willing to let go of beautiful cover art
- you need to be practical and keep expenses down
I look forward to putting his advice into practice.

Very well written book. Enjoyed reading it, and finished it in two days. John Wood has done a tremendous service to Nepal and Cambodia (two countries in which I used to live and work). Amazing work that needed to be done. Great reading also in the book about some of the inner workings of Microsoft as well. Read this book!

This book had me bawling from the pictures and the vivid description, but more importantly, it inspired me to action. John has a way of resonating with his audience, expressing the importance of the cause, and showing you how your money can help directly. From the first page I didn't want the book to end, and on the last page I wanted to throw a fundraiser to build a library. If you're looking for a motivational and inspiring story, you should read this book. If you're looking to make a difference, you should take action after you finish this book.

I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in making a difference in the world or wants to get off the corporate treadmill. This is the story of one man who did both. He is obviously passionate about Room to Read, and the reader can't help but feel his passion. The only downside is that it reads too much like a lightly-edited journal at times--it gets a bit repetitive toward the end (I heard a lot about his "insane schedule").
Highly Motivating and Inspiring

This is a great book for anyone...John Woods story of leaving a great career, a girlfriend, and a life of luxury to help make the world a better place is a fun and inspirational read. A great tone of "this isn't for everyone, but was right for me" helps the reader enjoy the story without feeling like they should change the world in the same way. It gives you perspective and food for thought...absolutely fascinating.

For my company it helped us build a foundation of principles by which everyone can live by not just talk about. The end result was a more enjoyable workplace and five star customer experience.

Finally a book that didnt leave me hanging. Achieve Brand Integrity goes the extra mile. Gregg didnt let the book fall into the business-book-trap of only telling us "what we need to do"...he actually gives us access to the tools on "how to get it done." Pretty selfless stuff. If this read doesn't get you off the dime towards competing globally in the 21st Century...then stop buying books on Brand. C-Level Mgmt should take notice from Mr. Lederman...change is coming with or without them!

I like this book because it starts with a simple yet powerful concept missed by the vast majority of business leaders. Brand Strategy is "The process of aligning what we say with what we do, to positively influence what customers think." Simple because it is what your customers expect. Powerful because in my experience most competitors don't get it. They're wrong. Great brands are fueled by strong cultures, cultures that strive to bring their brand's promise to life. Chapter 6 is worth the entire price of admission. In this chapter, you begin to understand the underlying psychology of your workers and how beliefs drive behavior. And what you must do to change them to become a "visible" brand. Not from a strategy standpoint, rather from a get your hands dirty point of view. When Gregg Lederman says process, he means that literally. He spells out in clear steps what you need to do to align what "we do" with what "we say." In fact the book refers you to [...] to access templates that allow you to progress this concept on your own. Achieve Brand Integrity is a small investment that can pay huge dividends if you embrace the power of a designed culture.
Incredible book!!! Only wish I had it sooner..

Gregg Lederman lives five years in the future, so if you want to know how to motivate your employees and have more profitable growth in your company, just ask him.
Lederman sets it all out so well. This is a huge contribution that if used will empower any business of any size to distill brand integrity in their employees. This book is easy to read and makes it all so easy to understand. I really wish I had this resource to refer to 15 years ago. I make it a common practice to give this book to every new employee that I hire.

As anyone in business knows, cash is KING! This book is a "must-read" because it provides a thorough overview of the most important aspect of business--how to keep the cash flowing in. There are literally hundreds of usable ideas and strategies that can be put to work in any business right away, many involving no out-of-pocket cost. Brad challenges the reader with "common-sense" approaches to building your business while providing practical solutions. Keep a note pad handy while you're reading so you can remember the ideas you will want to implement.

Why on earth would someone who writes cozy cat mysteries want a book that deals with managing a business? [I'm reluctant to use the term "duh!" but it seems to fit here.]
My work as a writer, editor, and speaker, generates income. Ergo, I have a business. Sure, I don't have employees, but so what? The general principles are still the same, despite the common belief that writers must be starving artists until they hit the big time.
Because I've never owned a traditional business, I'm not one to judge whether or not INSTANT CASHFLOW gives valid advice about deductions and such. Yes, there is MUCH in this book that I cannot use. But the story of the mechanic, the encouragement that I can shift my thinking (and my actions) to profitable means, the concept of buying customers -- all these are ideas I can use.
Check back with me in two years and see how well it's worked.

This is an invaluable book for any correctional employee. It should be read by all new employees and reviewed by others from time to time.
Having worked in the corrections field for many years, I have seen numerous variations of these 'games'. The authors do a great job of explaining how setups progress from beginning to endgame. They cover many case studies that show various ways that inmates manipulate some staffers into providing contraband, sexual favors, etc. One would like to think that never happens, but it does. This book can be a great aid in reducing occurrences.
I first read this about ten years ago and just reread it. I learned even more the second time through. It is certainly worthwhile to review.
This book can help correctional workers avoid losing their reputations, jobs, and even their lives. If you work in corrections, buy this, read it, and share it with others.

This book should be required reading for everyone. I bought it for my husband who is going into law enforcement, but read it myself. After reading it, I made my teenage son, and my four brothers, and my parents, friends and in-laws read it. It is a wake up call for those of us who go through life thinking the best of people, and assuming that everyone else does too. If you have anyone in your life- unstable ex-mates, out of control teen-age kids, outlaw-inlaws, or any other kind of person that seems to want to use or abuse you, then please educate yourself about their agendas with this book. It makes it much easier to protect yourself, and believe me, not all criminal types are behind bars or come with a warning label.

This book has given me the ability to work with inmates in Prison, and to already know what "Games" they do and will play. I knew about the manipulation, but to think just what an inmate can do with just a nice jester. This book helped me before I walked into the Prison system, and continues to help me as I spend 8 hours watching, learning, and catching "Games Criminals Play".

As a reviewer of sales books I have read them all: Spin Selling, Beyond Selling Value, The New Solution Selling, and more then a hundred more published in Germany and the US. I ranked The Science of Sales Success #1 ahead of all these in my list of books on selling in a complex environment. Josh Costell's book is indeed something special. It's methodology is not only more logical and elegant then those of his competitors, but also more realistic and controllable by sales executives. It deserves to become the premier handbook for all involved in B2B sales.

The Science of Sales Success is a spectacular book written for today's proactive sales professional. If you're a fly by the seat of your pants salesperson, this book is not for you; continue dialing for dollars and pray for the best. If you're looking to journey from being perceived as another commdity vendor to an industry expert who can deliver measurable results to C-level customers within targeted market segments, The Science of Sales Success lays out a practical, logical methodology to get you there. Goes way above and beyond other sales books including "The New Strategic Selling," "Solution Selling," Spin Selling," and "Selling With Integrity," by providing readers with eleven sales management templates (invaluable tools), that can be customised to their specific products and services on an individual sale basis as they move from the initial planning stage to obtaining a signed purchase order. No fluff here, just a battle-tested system designed to achieve results written by an in-the-trenches sales veteran. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I recently bought 2 books on Staging, since I'm currently wondering wether to pursue it as a new career. Right off the bat, this book is very inspiring in it's voice and the writer's accomplishments. I'm barely into it, but it's already gotten me back to feeling excited about the possibilities. As opposed to the other staging book i'm about to review, and ended up returning.
The layout is like reading a term paper, but it's kind of nice reading on such a big format for a change. No color pictures to speak of, but if you're buying this, you're not looking for color ideas. Just tell me what the biz is all about, and what i could expect from giving it a go, is all i'm looking for.
I'm really enjoying the way that it's written as if the author is talking to you. It's much more entertaining, and it makes me feel like she's there for any questions, which she says she is!
So based on the 30+ pages or so i've read, this book is a definite for those looking for some insight into this growing business.

In a sea of books that deliver generalities, this book stands out as refreshingly filled with tips galore and the best useable, practical help of all. I was astonished at the openness of the author and her willingness to divulge literally everything one ought to know. Her checklist on the tasks a stager should consider when taking on a project was the most complete I've ever seen and goes on for pages. She gives you a list of questions to ask homeowners up front so you know in advance whether they are do-it-yourself types or not. I found this important so I'll know how to proceed in my presentations and calculating my pricing. Excellent.
Her advice on how to work with clients is well thought through and mirrors my own beliefs. I consider myself to be pretty savvy as a business person, but I found gems everywhere that gave me pause to think and reconsider what I was doing. The lists of questions for agents and owners, and pricing guidelines are worth the price of the book just by themselves. She also gives a pretty thorough list of tools you'll need on the job and a list of the kinds of furniture and props you might inventory if you want to stage empty properties.
There are books out there that never get to the really "good" stuff, but this one is filled from cover to cover with topic-specific practicality. I also enjoyed her occasional humor. I can imagine it's very difficult to write for beginners as well as experienced readers, but I thought she did a masterful job of explaining the basics while getting into the meatier details too. She kept me interested at every step.
Most books of this nature have no pictures to speak of, but this one has plenty. I appreciate the "on the spot" nature of them and that they are representative of all the varied types of homes and predicaments a stager will run across.
The "ready to use" forms at the back of the book are adapted to the industry, yet generic enough to be used by any one just as they are. And since the book is the same size as a sheet of paper, you don't have to make any adjustments or resize them in any way. I appreciate that the author obviously considered this when electing to do a large sized manual. More kudos to her for that as well.
Of all the books I've purchased on the subject, I found this one to be by far the best and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to start a staging business. It's clear the author is an expert and also a very generous person. On a different note, I also purchased her other book on redesign, and found it to be excellent as well.

There is an expression that goes "Beware the naked man who offers you his shirt." For example, a "business expert" writes a book on how to grow your mid-sized firm and deal with your employees. Then you find out they themsleves are a sole practitioner.
Matt knows what he writes about because he has lived it. His approaches aren't just abstract theories, but work in real life. They are a guide book for success. I have read books and attended presentations by Zig Ziglar, Joe Girard, and others, and Matt's techniques and approaches are in the same league. And, more importantly, they are targeted for the IT industry. There are not a lot of books out there for the IT business owner and this one that deserves to be in their library. His advice and insights can prevent costly mistakes. He even provides sample contacts that you can use. Even if you only implement one idea in his book, it will more than pay for itself.
I own a copy and it is required reading for my new hires.

Viki Lareau's book Marketing and Selling Your Handmade Jewelry is a well-written, experience-based guide for the novice. With the exception of a couple of small number of typos or misspellings, the book is a delight. I found that I wanted to read it straight through and almost succeeded in doing so before being interrupted. The photos complement the text, and it helps that the reader comes to like the person writing the book (at least I did).

Pricey but helpful book. A lot of the same information can also be found online by searching "how to create a yellow pages ad".
This covers all print media and strategies for developing your marketing (complete with examples of what a strong ad looks like vs the "not so good"). If you need or want more assistance Barry and company offer their service (paid of course, but their fee structure is comprehensive and reasonable) includes analysis of your ad, suggestions for improvement in addition to (re)designing your ad to reach your target audience.
The two most important bits of information we came away with are these:
1. Unless you are in the ad design field you should _seriously_ consider hiring someone who knows their trade WELL. We needed to make some minor changes to our YP ad from the previous year, and although we started the process "early" (at least what our rep led us to believe was early - 2 months out from their `deadline') we still have NOTHING from the phone companies "design team".
The following sage advice rings true "...yellow page graphic artists are required to output a lot of work in a short period of time. Even the best artist cannot do a great ad in 30 minutes. You honestly want an artist to spend the entire day working on your advertisement, and you want to pay them for it... Graphic artists study art. They do not extensively study business, or copywriting, or marketing, or business law. They do not know about your company, your customers, your capabilities, or how you make money. If you really want effective yellow page advertising, hire the best graphic artist and the best advertising professional you can find [and afford - my emphasis]. Do not leave it for a kid with a computer".
At this point we would be glad to have paid for a quality job done because it would have saved us time lost in having to constantly call our YP rep to find out when the "design team" would have our ad back to be proofed (and our rep's boss wasn't any more helpful either -- this from the "leading" directory in our area, tsk, tsk, tsk), not to mention frustration in having to go through all of that nonsense. We are a small independent music teaching studio and we would have been better served and saved money in the long run by hiring a professional than leaving the design process to some over-worked, under-qualified and probably under-paid novice from the phone companies "design team".
2. Publishers carefully monitor phonebook circulation and usage data. They know exactly how much their book is being used and by whom. If they are not volunteering that information, be extra careful. Alternatively, publishers should also be able to give you information about their competitors. Ask how their book compares to their competition's book. Be persistent and insist on getting this information from them - you're paying for it (by way of placing an ad in their phone book).
This is the reason we are still trying to work out our yp advertising with the "leading" phone co/publisher. They're the one most used in our area. If that was not the case we would have dropped them like a hot sweaty sock!
Barry's book covers so many salient points about YP advertising and the industry that you could read, and re-read it and still find ways to improve your YP ad. A very good investment for any business owner (and the online source above compliments it well - MOO).
Good luck and fortune in all your business endeavors everyone!
