I purchased this book in preparation for the AAPC's CPC certification exam. It is easy to use and a wonderful learning tool. There is a timed clock on the CDrom portion to help with building your coding speed (this is essential to getting finished with the exam in the alloted time). The tutorials give rationales for wrong answers. It was an excellent study guide.

The collection of essays, Characters of Shakespeare"s Plays, by William Hazlitt discusses exactly what you might think from reading the title. This book from about 1817 tells us what someone who was not just anyone thought of Shakespeare's plays and, most significantly for Hazlitt, those incredibly drawn characters. Hazlitt praised Shakespeare and, in his view, never enough. If the remedial reading of Shakespeare in high school tainted your perceptions of the plays with rote study of lines and characters supplemented with relentless quizing and testing, consider reading this author who, although he may never change your mind about Shakespeare, might delight you anyhow. Hazlitt's enthusiasm is infectious. Hazlitt rates prominently among the great essayists from Montaigne to Bacon. Others quote him and emulate him. Read him and you will know who he has influenced. Try to understand his theories but enjoy his style. His politics may be ancient but everyone's will be one day.

This book is considered a Classic in Shakespeare Studies and I'd have to agree (although I don't necessarily see many things in the same manner as the Author). The book is readily accessible today, almost 200 years after first being published, whereas much Shakespeare Criticism today is only accessible to the Chosen Few. My honest opinion is that too many Literary Critics today are too full of themselves to look at Shakespeare with any pretense of objectivity, while Mr. Hazlitt, among other Great Critics, is intent at giving actual thought to Shakespeare's work. I'm not saying Hazlitt breaks the 'Shakespeare Code,' but at least he gives you thoughts to seriously consider about Shakespeare.
If you read current literary criticism and can't make heads or tails of it, there's a good reason for why; little of it makes any sense. They are either hyperbolic in their esorteric lingo, or deep in some psychological crevice that won't pan you any gold, trust me, I've been there.
Read Hazlitt, study Samuel Johnson's Preface, attempt A.C. Bradley, Northrop Frye, etc. ... I've personally been most impressed with Harold Goddard, 'The Meaning of Shakespeare.' There's DEFINITELY 'Something about Shakespeare,' and I hope you find your efforts as rewarding as I have, despite the plethora of misleading scholarship available and many wrong turns hyped today.

introduction to the music with a CD

Brief biographies of the two premier American composers are followed by tutorials on their music focusing on better-known, widely-aclaimed pieces. The guide succeeds in making the music accessible without dumbing it down at all or trying to popularize it. Felsenfeld is himself a composer and a music writer bringing to the task not only compatibility with Ives and Copland, but also an educator's understanding of the reader's position in wanting to learn more about them and enhance appreciation of their music. With the book is the treat of a CD offering ample samplings of music, including Copland's complete "Appalachian Spring" and four pieces of Ives', who wrote shorter, intense works.

Since a third of the book is dedicated to the discussion and dissection of Charles Ives' and Aaron Copland's compositions, here is a listing of the music on the accompanying BMG CD: 1) Copland: Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra with Harp and Piano; 2) Copland: Appalachian Spring; 3) Copland: El Salon Mexico; 4) Ives: The Unanswered Question; 5) Ives: "Memories"; 6) Ives: "General William Booth Enters Into Heaven"; and 7) Ives: Three Places in New England - II. "Putnam's Camp". The recording is dominated by Michael Tilson Thomas who appears as both conductor of the London and San Francisco Symphonies and as pianist on "Memories." Also on the disc are Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra (Appalachian Spring) and Eduardo Mata conducting the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (El Salon Mexico).

This book is a welcome addition to any Charlie Chan fan's library. There is finally a well-organized and comprehensive compendium of Charlie Chan's quotations and it is fun to read. In fact, you don't have to be a Chan fan to enjoy it since the aphorisms can often be general and not necessarily specific to the films. And the introductory text helps to explain the films where the sayings originated.

Pride and Prejudice comments

Pride and Prejudice is a love story between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, an uptight man who has too much pride. Their first impressions gave a big start to this story that developed into the major conflicts and story line. My favorite chapter was the first one because it sets the tone for the story. It gives us the setting and the introduction to the characters. We really get to see Mrs. Bennett as an excruciatingly loud mother who lives only to search for husbands for her daughters. We can see Mrs. Bennett favors Jane as her first priority for finding a husband because she is the eldest and most beautiful one of all. One instance is when Mrs. Bennett found out Mr. Darcy was moving into a neighboring house. When she found out he was single, she automatically suggested/recommended Jane as a potential future wife. In contrast we start to see and understand Mr. Bennett's attitude towards his wife's plea and towards his defense of his daughters. He doesn't critique his daughters when it comes to men.
I would recommend this book mostly to women/girls between the ages of 17-50 because this story deals with the trouble girls go through and it deals with five girls living in the household, to which we can relate. The daughters were not that old, yet they were mature for their age. Teens will enjoy it because we all go through these teen stages of boys, and women can relate because of the maturity level that is in this story.
One literary device that was used in the story was analogy. It is used to describe two characters (Elizabeth and Darcy) that are alike by comparing them. We are able to see their differences, but along with it their common interests start to show. For example, they both come from a different social background and yet are both intelligent, and have a tendency to judge harshly.
Overall I can say that I liked this book, Pride and Prejudice, because it was an interesting story. Nowadays we read about homicide detectives and mysteries happening with murder, but this story is nothing like this. It builds its own suspense through character's personalities. It's based on feeling rather than action so we can all relate to this story psychologically. It captivates us in an imaginary world in the early 19th century that reminds us of their rules and regulations that were used back then. For example women were just expected to marry wealth and make a family. They played no other role whatsoever, so since we don't live in that type of environment anymore, we can just picture how life was back then and see what they went through, and their approach through these situations.

I give this book a rating of 10 because it is my personal favorite. I first read this book over 10 years ago and must have reread it 30 times since. Each time I read Jane Eyre, I find a new meaning to the words or find a small detail that I had missed before. It makes for an enjoyable read every single time. Jane Eyre has it all for me. Romance. Drama. Separation. And Renewed Love.
This book has become a part of my life over the years. It has shaped the way that I think and whenever I feel down or lonely, I pick my copy up, open to any page and start to read. I don't need to even start at the beginning or read the whole way through. It is like flipping through an old photo album. I am comforted just knowing it is there and always will be

I bought this book about 3 years ago now and have used it for several occasions. I originally bought it to plan my wedding but found it very useful for other events, such as the wedding shower, baby shower, christening, etc. The book is very informative and correctly depicts each of the locations according to my experience. If you want to plan a different kind of paty for any occasion, this book is very useful.

Here we go again with another great Christmas in My Heart Volume. I have never been disappointed with any of the books in this series. (I have all of them except for Volume 4 which I am still looking for.) These books contain such uplifting stories whether they are from yesteryear or set in modern times. It is such a pleasure to be able to sit down and read something wholesome and encouraging. Every story has the Christmas setting in common so they are especially savored during that time of year but they contain wonderful nuggets of inspiration for the whole year through. Look for Joe Wheeler's other compilations of stories for other seasons also.

Hopefully, this series will continue for years to come. It's nice to be able to count on the quality of Joe Wheeler's work. I don't ever have to worry about being embarrassed by anything in his books...for any age group.

This volume starts at the very beginning, 1894, and progresses through to 2004. As the years go on and films become more advanced and common, we get more pages devoted to each year, with lots of great pictures and movie posters along the way. It's pointed out that the little articles on each film or subject aren't actual news clippings from back then, but they did try to write them as though they could have been. Naturally, even given the length of such a volume, there were some things that were left out, but there's also a lot more that isn't left out, and this is after all just meant to be a year-by-year review with little news clipping-like pieces to accompany the films and events of each year, not a hugely in-depth account of each and every single film and even of every single year in cinema history. The only slight problem I have with it is that there are some urban legends reported as fact, such as Walter Matthau's birth name having been Matuschanskyayasky, Buster Keaton getting his nickname from Harry Houdini (when is this urban legend going to die already!?), and a certain sordid bit of misinformation about the murder of Ramon Novarro, which was actually made up by Kenneth Anger in his notoriously false 'Hollywood Babylon.' A bit pricey, but worth every penny.

I've red the new one(2005) and quite frankly, they aren't very different. They changed a few questions and added a few things in the review section, then that's about it. You're not missing a big step if you get this instead of the 2005. They both include the CDROM.
By the way, the CDROM is nothing short of amazing. It has 150 Pre and Post Exam Questions(the questions are the same, only in different order) that you answer using the computer. So basically, this book has 150 questions in the CDROM then another 150 on the book making it 300 PRACTICE QUESTIONS!! That doesnt include the short 1-10 quizzes on each section of the review chapters(i.e. each body system, reimbursement, etc.)
Really great book for the bargain price. The AMA sells a review book about $10 more expensive with about 75 questions and no rationales on the right and wrong answers.
