Brief but captivating story with vivid illustrations. After I read the story through once to kindergarten and first grade students, some of them asked me to read it again. The children seemed to really enjoy it.

My 2 year old son got this book for his birthday and he absolutely loves it. He loves peeking through the holes in the pages and saying, "I see you!" The illustrations are great. The rhyming text is fun to read and I have yet to get tired of this book myself!

This story is perfect for kindergarteners beginning to read. My daughter had her birthday party at our local ice skating rink. I included this book in her classmates' goody bags and the feedback has been terrific! Her friends loved the story because it mirrored their own first experience at the ice rink. My daughter enjoys reading the story because of its rhyme. There's enough words she recognizes mixed with new words she can sound out, making this a fun book to read as well as a book leaving your new reader feeling very proud of herself by the end!

Friendship and Fate
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-07
"Charlotte's Web" might have been the first book that I read that did either of these things: portray values and lessons to be learned and cherished; not have a happily-ever-after ending but still be a book I wanted to read and re-read. Wilbur the pig barely survives his birth and infancy, befriends Charlotte (the spider who lives above his pen), learns what fate is in store for pigs on a farm, has that fate altered by his friend, and then must deal with Charlotte's own fate. While I already loved animals before reading "Charlotte's Web," reading it enhanced that love. It also helped cultivate my lifelong belief that friendship is one of the greatest gifts we encounter in life. I re-read "Charlotte's Web" not too long ago and, while I saw that the reading level was definitely aimed at children, the book still shines above most other books that I have read, and remains a true treasure for the mind, the education, and the heart. Submitted by Chris McCallister, trying to remain forever young, and true to my friends.

West's Time Machine
George's Pond: Created in the Beloved Tradition of Charlotte's Web

Being a children's author and teacher, I often enjoy reading Charlotte's Web as a child and now I enjoy reading the book to my son and my students. I think part of the reason this book has remained one of my favorites is because of the classic friendship between Wilbur and Charlotte. Both characters demonstrate an unselfish kind of love that is demonstrated from the time they meet. As a mother I want to teach my children the valuable life lesson of being a good friend and I think this story teaches that lesson in a non-didactic fashion. Charlotte's Web will forever be a classic in my heart.

Meet all of the barnyard animals from the new "Charlotte's Web" movie

E.B. White's classic children's story "Charlotte's Web" was first published in 1952 and made into a successful animated film in 1973 with Debbie Reynolds as the voice of the title character. With all the advances in movie making magic regarding talking pigs, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood got around to making a "live action" version of the beloved story. The film opened in the United States today with Julia Roberts doing the voice of Charlotte, Dominic Scott Kay the voice of Wilbur, and Dakota Fanning as Fern. For youngsters who are enthralled with the movie, "Charlotte's Web: The Essential Guide" allows them to learn more about Charlotte's world.

This is a DK book so that means there are 20 "chapters," each of which is a 2-page spread, except for the 4-page spread that opens up to show The Farm that serves as a map of Wilbur's journey from the Arables' to the Zuckerman's. This also means that there are well over 100 photographs from the movie on these 48-pages, including a detailed look at Templeton's lair (a shiny key makes an attractive ceiling decoration). The book includes a salutation to the readers from Joy, Aranea, and Nellie, a trio of names you should recognize if you have seen the movie or the animated film (or gone old school and read the book). Then you get to follow Wilbur's journey from the Zukerman's barn to his appearance at the County Fair. Along the way young readers will learn about facts about pigs and other animals, the big words Charlotte uses (like "magnum opus"), and who is Henry Fussy.

Granted, calling this guide "essential" is overplaying things a bit, but for young readers who like the movie this book that Amanda Li has put together will certainly let them find out more about not only the characters in the film but the animals in the real world. I was just sort of surprised Dakota Fanning, who plays Fern, is still doing what would be considered a children's film, but then I remembered she does not become a teenager until next February. Anyhow, if on the way home from the film your kids are all excited about Charlotte, Wilbur and the rest of the gang, this book will allow them to prolong the experience and add a little education to the mix.

While this book deals with opposites (i.e. high/low), the story and pictures are really cute. I laughed out loud when I read it in the store. I bought it for that reason alone. As an adult, I need more laughter in my life and this book does the trick.
