In my opinion, Peter Gurney was the world's leading authority on guinea pigs, and their well-being was his passion. All of his books are excellent, and those of us who love our little creatures will miss him terribly. Peter passed away in 2006. I highly recommend all of his books, and his website is also a great resource for guinea pig owners.

This book covers all aspects of guinea pig ownership, and presents it in an easy to read, easy to find what you're looking for way. There are differnt sections for indoor and outdoor guinea pigs, so however you are going to keep your pig you get information how to in this book. Then there are sections to help you understand the guinea pigs lauguage and body launguage, showing, breeds of piggies and alot of other things. There is a list of common health problems that guinea pigs have with descriptions of the symptoms. One thing I found very helpfull was the section on how to introduce a guinea pig to other pets, and how to potty train them.
I read this book over and over again not just for the information but also for the nice pictures and the great way that a guinea pigs wonderful personality that guinea pigs have. If you have a guinea pig you should have this book.

FINALLY!!! A book devoted to the joys of pet guinea pigs--not breeding fuzz factories, not commercial commodities, but COMPANIONS! Proves guinea pigs are playful and fun--they don't just sit there. A joy to read--especially for those of us who remember Audrey when she was the editor of Horse Illustrated. Engaging, informative, helpful text written by a true lover of animals. The illustrations are also lavish, helpful, at times hysterical and heavy on cute. Also has a big listing of books, clubs and a tiny website listing--still, very accurate. The only quibbles are that housing piggies outdoors is information grudgingly given as Audrey advocates keeping them indoors. No information about pregancy and raising young is to be found, as she advocates letting breeders do that. However, so many people find that their new piggie just happens to be pregnant, not due to any planned breeding, that this information is needed for those caring piggy slaves who have no idea what to expect. Still, quibbles aside, a must have book for those who love guinea pigs.

This delightful collection of cavy pictures elevates rather than lowers our sense of who Pigs are, and what our relationship is to them: it is sweet and cute without being smarmy.

This is a very cute calendar with many adorable guinea pigs in nice locations. It is nice to find this since there isn't really that much out there that celebrates the guinea pig. Being an owner of two little piggies I have to say that they are so loving, adorable, and fun once they get to know you and are comfortable around you. I think it is time I take up photography so my piggies can be in pictures like those in this calendar!

I found the story to be much more than friendship, the illustrations were just spectacular as my little nieces and I delighted in all the hidden objects in all the scenes. Brian Lies is masterful as he intertwines his story with his artwork. Brilliant!

The favorite book of my daughter's kindergarten

This story of friendship speaks to all of us, child and parent alike. Here are two critters who are wonderful friends but opposite personalities. Hamlet, the pig, is the daredevil -- completely fearless and he doesn't seem to learn from experience. Then, there's Quince, the porcupine, who serves as both a friend and a very cautious parental type, who wants only for Hamlet to look for nice, quiet, safe activities. Of course, Quince is always there, ready to pick up the pieces and provide comfort after the inevitable disaster.

The illustrations are both intricate and delightful. It takes a kid to notice many of the details. The first time we read the book my daughter said, "Look, Mom, the shopkeeper has to stand on phone books to see over the counter."

If you only own one hamster care book...

This book is very detailed and up to date regarding hamster care ranging from basic care and health concerns to breeding and showing hamsters. Because the book is detailed it may not be reader friendly for younger children who own hamsters than other hamster starter care books on the market featuring simpler formats. It has some very nice color illustration sections outlining different varieties of hamsters. I think it should definitely be in a hamster owners library for reference.

I've had a number of hamsters over the past several years, and have looked through a good many hamster books to find various information about caring for them. Unfortunately, a lot of the ones at the pet stores are often out of date and can even include misinformation. However, Hamsterlopaedia is neither of those things, and though it took a bit to find it, I'm glad I did. This is an amazingly detailed book that not only covers the basics, like how to house and feed your hamsters, but it even goes into hamster biology and the most common health problems to watch out for. It also provides information on breeding hamsters, including caring for a mother and her new babies, and not only includes information on Syrian hamsters but dwarf hamsters as well. Most of the book is text, but there are a good number of photo pages as well, especially to illustrate the various colors and types of hamsters. Whether you've just gotten your first hamster or you've been caring for them for years, this book has plenty to offer. I would highly recommend this book and I really appreciate the authors' work in writing it.

A great book to learn about hamsters!

Review Date: 2004-04-07
This book is great! I teach third grade and bought this book for my classroom library when we got our first hamster. When we got another species, I couldn't find the book! It's always in someone's desk so they can read it next!!

There are a lot of pictures and it's laid out in a simple manner. It's not confusing to read and laid out in a manner that I learned a lot and my third graders are learning a lot. It is great for children because it doesn't go too in depth on mating issues...it explains basics without graphic detail like I've seen in other books.

The best section is on the hamster life cycle! I got two Dwarfs who happened to be male and female (unknown to me!) They've already had too litters and the kids are learning now about the hamster life cycle. This book has been invaluable for that. The kids are able to view pictures of the newborn babies without having to disturb mom.

An excellent starter book for the hamster novice!

I trust Lorraine Hill to tell me everything I need to know about hamsters!

In this well organized reference book, complete with big, bright photos, the author presents answers to just about any question a new hamster owner might ask. It starts with hamster history and proceeds to tell about hamster care, species of hamsters, hamster habits, hamster health, and even a bit about showing and breeding hamsters. It's up-to-date, simple to understand, and covers all the basics. No new hamster owner should leave the pet shop without this book, esepcially if he's taking home a hamster as well!

And she was right! The stickers are all of Hamtaro with various expressions (such as "krmp-krmp" or "heke") but they're still cute. And the artwork is better than I expected. It has an almost 3-dimensional, textured look. Each month features a group picture, along with the individual birthdays of the characters. If you like hamsters, this is a wonderfully whimsical addition to your kitchen, your home office, or anywhere your creativity could use a little boost.

How do you rate a calendar??

Well, I'm not sure how to rate a calendar! I mean, after all, this one does contain all the days of the year in the proper order, with room to write in important events. If you like nice pictures in your calendars, this one qualifies.

However, if you are a Hamtaro fan, you MUST own this! Even if it is already halfway through the year and you can get this on sale. It comes with cute Hamtaro stickers for marking special occasions, and each month has stats about your favorite Ham-Hams (as well as their birthdays!). The pictures are VERY nice and on a scale far superior than the actual cartoon show animation. Each month features all of the Ham-Hams in one 'group photo' type of image. And once removed from the calendar the pictures can be used as decoration. We already have January framed and hanging in my daughter's room (she's the big Hamtaro fan in the house... though the rest of us have become "acquainted" with these cute little characters through association. Considering this calendar is hanging in the kitchen!)

I recommend this for Hamtaro fans - if only for the value of the very nice pictures.

Claude Dubois' inviting drawings lend to an appreciation of this very simple story of parental endearments, which embarrass a daughter when friends tease. She loves her parents and wonder if everyone has an affectionate nickname in this gentle picturebook story of a mouse and friends.

Delightful story with easily absorbed life lessons.

Lola is having a great first day of school until Lulu asks if she has a nickname at home. When Lola replies that her parents call her baby-cake, sweetie pie or fairy princess, Lulu and the other children can't stop laughing. But Lola soon learns that everyone from the police officer to the baker has a silly nickname. When Lulu makes a surprising confession, Lola learns an important lesson about sharing. Hello, Sweetie Pie is a delightful and entertaining tale of little hamsters is so well written by Carl Norac and illustrated by Claude Dubos that young readers will be able to instantly identify with these charming characters and easily absorb their life lessons.

My two toddlers love this colorful rhyming boardbook and its companion masterpiece Hooray For Truckmice. These computer generated illustrations scream with vibrant colors that will inflame the imagination of even the most jaded toddler reader. The simple rhymes are charming. You can't buy a better book for your youngsters for less money than this high quality, small boardbook.

We bought this book for our son when he was about six months old. Ever since, it's a lock to hold his attention. The text is brief with simple rhyming lines. The illustrations are bright and clear, but not too detailed. It doesn't really tell a story. More accurately, it highlights some key elements of train travel (whistles, the dining car, a caboose). It's a cute book, but frankly, I'm not sure I "get" what is so interesting to my son. Regardless, when I'm putting him to bed and we choose a book to read, he will usually reach for this one. And as any parent knows, when you find something that works, don't question it.
