As a hog odor researcher, I found this book to be a very valuable resource. Excellent selection of discussions regarding the often neglected social aspects in the evolution of the hog industry from some of the "hidden" players in the pork industry, that is sociologists, anthropologists, community leaders, conscientious politicians, and some local farmers.

Completely Quotable

This is a charming book to read aloud to children...as much fun for the adult as for the child. It reminds me of Where the Wild Things Are in its use of language- every line is quotable. I am, in the words of Poinsettia herself, "a pig in bliss", every time I read this gem.

A Glorious Book!

This a Wonderful, Charming book -- a perfect children's book with wonderful drawings and text. Poinsetta has many brothers and sisters, and all she wants is a quiet place to read. All her favorite spots, from the window seat with the "buttery leather," to the rock in the yard are occupied with a sibling. As the story continues, Poinsetta discovers the little things that make her happy, and then how much her family means to her. Look for another book about Poinsetta and her family, "Poinsetta and the Firefighters."

Our family loved this book so much that we ended up buying a copy -- too bad the hard cover is not in print!

Poinsettia wants to curl up with her favorite book but all of the best places are being used by her many brothers and sisters. She thinks there is not enough room in their house until she is left home alone all day. By the time everyone returns, Poinsettia has decided her family and their house is just right. The author, Felicia Bond, has created charming illustrations and amusing characters. She uses wonderfully vivid description, "If the sun was coming in the window just right, it would spread like warm butter across the pages of her book." At 32 pages it would be an excellant book for reading aloud to younger children.

Do you want a book about kids, parents, and how much they love each other, along with being a good citizen, then this is the book for you. Felicia Bond (who is well known for the drawings in the book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie (If You Give...)and many other books, has created a wonderful story with charming drawings, and engaging characters. This is a continuation of a book about Poinsettia and her large family, Poinsettia & her family which has my favorite line in any children's book..."I'm a pig in bliss!" as Poinsettia soaks in a bathtub. You and and your kids will read this over and over again.

I found this book in the classroom library of a fellow teacher, and was thrilled as I had just finished a unit on "family" and used Poinsettia and her Family, by Felicia Bond. My preschoolers LOVED this book! When I borrowed and read this title, we fell in love with it as well!

This is by far the best book I've read on feeding rabbits correctly. The information is geared towards those breeding rabbits for show and meat production. I highly recommend this book to those who are raising rabbits commercially and are interested in increased production and health of the rabbit herd. The information given is very useful for eliminating guesswork and confusion about what to feed for best desired results.

I do not think this would be useful to pet rabbit owners.

Peter R. Cheeke has done a terrific job in condensing his and a great deal others' research into a book that serious rabbit breeders will consult for generations to come.

It must be noted that this book is not going to be an easy read for many people - particularly non-native English-speakers. Still, it is worth every effort you will make for this is the best available source of detailed information resulting from years of painstaking research.

Serious raisers will likely also want to subscribe to a bi-monthly internet publication at prma.org and to Rabbit Habit Weekly at rabbitfarming.com.

Two other books make excellent companions to Rabbit Feeding & Nutrition - Rabbit Production; Rabbit Farming Manual (available only direct from publisher at rabbitfarming.org).

Cheeke was a co-author on Rabbit Production.

Again, Rabbit Feeding & Nutrition is a must read for commercial rabbit producers.

Know How to Tell When Your Rabbit is Sick

Since rabbits are prey animals they hide illness really well. That's why its important for rabbit keepers to know how to see even the faintest signs of illness and what they mean. The book educates the reader on common illness and their treatments and more chronic illnesses. The author covers drugs, how safe they are, and what they do and discusses alternative medicine. The book has also been reviewed by a vet before publishing so the information can be trusted. This goes beyond what a standard rabbit care book, this is a rabbit health book. Use it as a supplement to a good rabbit care book like the House Rabbit Handbook or Rabbits for Dummies. I recommend this over the Rabbitopaedia, which has incorrect information in it.

This is a wonderful book for any bunny parent who wants to learn more about specific rabbit illnesses. I have referred to this book quite often when one of my bunnies seems "out of sorts". The chapters include Being Prepared, Common Rabbit Health Issues, Chronic Ailments and Aging Bunnies, Care of the Chronically Ill, Diagnosis and Conventional Treatments, Alternative Medicine, Knowing When to Say Goodbye, and Coping with Loss. When you know more about common rabbit illnesses, the more prepared you'll be if something does happen to your bunny.

This is the second time I purchased this book. I owned the first edition and when the second came out, I had to have it. The book is greatly reassuring at 11:30 at night when your discover something wrong with your bunny and the vet won't be available until morning. My our case, the book enabled us to diagnose our bunny's diabetes, something that our vet missed even though she is a "bunny expert". A must for every pet rabbit owner!!!

This book is one of my most recommended rabbit books. It is easy to read and gets right to the point. It tells you in plain language why your rabbit does what it does, it gives great tips on what to do and what not to do for your rabbit, and it is packed with useful facts and information on rabbits and bunnies. I can hardly suggest a better book, especially for beginners, than this one. It is perfect if you don't like to read a lot of filler. It tells you just what you need to know.

Professional breeder recommended.

My family has been professionaly breeding & caring for rabbits for over 20 years. I was very disatisfied with the quality of books available for my pet bunny customers and was seriously considering writing my own book. Then I found this book and was thrilled! It is exactly what I would have written myself. I recommend it to everyone who takes home a pet bunny (with the reminder that the author is from England and not to worry about the vaccinations listed for the two diseases that the USA is fortunately not plagued with). Every bunny owner should have this book!

This book was loaded with house rabbit information and tips on how to train and understand your rabbit. It was also very accurate except for the cedar/pine shavings warning & the statement that nearly every unspayed rabbit gets cancer. Although uterine cancer is common and the risk increases with age it isn't accurate to say every unspayed doe will get it. Otherwise I found the information useful, a much better book than the HRH.

In A Rat's Tale, I wrote off Randal as being somewhat of a snooty bore. In this book, however, we learn that Randal isn't such a bore after all. He has a secret interest that absolutely does not conform with what his society would approve of. And to add to his need for secrecy, he is blamed for a crime he doesn't commit. I felt sorry for him, being chased and having to hide, but the experience matures him so that he's ready to embrace a life changing decision. My favorite character was Maggie as I'm a singer, too. Elizabeth, the world traveler, is also an interesting character that the reader gets to spend some time with.

This is the perfect book for all you rodent lovers out there. Montague and Isabelle Mad-Rat are living in paradise in their new crate on wharf 62. But when it's mysteriously burned down on their wedding night, Isabelle's ex-fiancé, Randal Reese-Rat, is the prime suspect. This book is full of surprises, adventure, and suspense. Tor Seidler's style of writing is so unique it is almost impossible to describe. He writes so that everything falls together perfectly and it has a real ring to it. I would recommend The Revenge of Randal Reese-Rat to anybody, even if you despise rats.

Intriguing black and white drawings by Brett Helquist pepper this lively story.

I have 2 young boys ages 4 and 2 who love to read so we have shelves and shelves full of books. This book is by far one of my favorites in terms of gorgeous illustrations and the ability to bring imagination and ideas to my older son. One book in this series, "The Treasure", was originally given to us by my father, who is an illustrator and art director. He was amazed by the beauty as well, and we've purchased every other book by this author in order to keep the story going. My son loves the story and I think it teaches him how to pretend, make up stories, and have good old fashioned fun with dress up and fantasy without all the batteries, bells, and whistles in today's toys. This book is truly inspirational and one of a kind.

It was seeing the artwork that made me buy this book. I was drawn back to my childhood when I saw the work of Leonard Filgate in an art gallery, standing there mesmerized by the detail and capture of emotion in his characters. I couldn't afford the paintings so I thought I would pick up the book as a memento. Well, I had an hour to kill so I began to read, what a joyous story! Pick one up for yourself or your child, and enjoy!!

The beautiful illustrations by Leonard Filgate are some of the most professional, artistic work available in children's picture books today! They also express a wide range of human emotions through the animals' gestures which my children could easily understand. Rip Sqeak and His Friends are their "newest best friends". A great story book and a great art book for kids of all ages.

4 1/2 Degen Competes with Degen

Review Date: 2006-07-30
The great Bruce Degen, author of one of my alltime favorite kids' books, "Jamberry," evokes similar feelings of adventure and safety in this winning book about a pig's fancies. While not quite as masterful as "Jamberry," the book has many of the same elements, including poetic imagery over literal sense, friendly cooperative animals, quaint scenery, and a reliance on delicious images of food!

The book starts fast. While he watches his father patiently fishing, our young pig immediately begins his first fantasy. He guides a small sailboat "over the foam" with tubular waves crashing close to him. THe storm worsens, and we see the frantic pig "Bow with the gale away, Nail with a pail away. Hitch to a whale, and then sailaway home." (In this case, apparently back to his father calmly fishing at the water's edge.) It's clearly a fantasy, but one that's easy to stay with for awhile.

Next, he at home riding a playhorse: "Rideaway, rideaway, WHere will you rome? The little pig encounters a cat and a parrot uncovering some treasure, andhe wrests it way using a very blunt-ended sword. "Jamberry" is a more gentle book, although no animals are even scratched in Sailaway's 4 fantasy sequences. In the next-to-last mini-story, Piggy has another Walter Mitty-like escapade, transferring his toy plane play into another adventure. This time he pilots an open-cockpit plane, compelte with goggles, scarf, and tight leather helmet. In this fantasy, we get more of the "Jamberry" flavor, bright, inviting colors, the pig sluding down a rainbow, and poetic prose"

"Cloud beds to lie away.
Rainbow cream pie away,
Cut me a slice and then...
Flyaway home.

After his last of the day's adventures (this one has him riding a blue butterfly while frogs do backflips in a marshy pond!), he runs to his tree house--"happy alone"-- but reflects that one can share your fantasies with others, "...if you runaway home. The book has exciting fantasy-driven adventure, mixed with a mostly soft tone (I'n still not so sure about him withdrawing his sword), and may reassure kids that their fantasies are under their control; it's possible and even desireable to paradoxically "runaway home," where mommy and daddy pig (or their human equivalents) wait with open arms to hear about your exciting day!

It's perhaps unfair to compare every Degen book with his widely acclaimed "Jamberry," but he set a kind of standard with that book. IF you haven;t read it, I strongly recommend it. Once you go ga-ga for that book, you'll want to pick up others, and "Sailaway Home" follows in many of the Jamberry's giant steps. Personally, I'd look over any of Degen's solo works or collaborations, and I frequently search for them at the library.

The information is current and plentiful as usual with this series. The spanish is correct. The pictures are germane to the explanations on the page. They are also excellent pictures. This book is perfect for 8 to 12 year olds as a reference and for just reading. The children want to read it all at once. It definitely gives them everything they want to know about deer; their habitat, food, etc. This also makes it great for the teacher to read before talking about deer.

A great book in the America Salvaje series. Pictures couldn't be better. The information is as up to date as you can get. Placing skunks in their own family instead of with Mustilidae (weasels) is an example. I use this series with second graders (it's hard to find good second grade Spanish reference books on specific animals) but this book is definitely great for 8 to 12 year olds. Easy to read with plenty of information. A must reference and reading book.
