This is a great book. It rhymes, so it makes it very easy to read and on each page you can "click" the crickets. It also has bright, colorful illustrations. This is one of our favorites.

A wonderful book - for child AND reader!

What an enchanting book! The text weaves a great story with charming graphics and fun, somewhat tongue-twisting, rhymes. Who knew that cricket clicks could have so many nuances? :-)

My young daughter loves sticking her hand through the "holes" in the pages where the crickets go, and getting me to "click" the crickets. Always a fun time...

I'm sure she will continue to love it as she engages with the story. The narrative talks about a young cricket learning to sing, with both mommy's help and the encouragement of other animals (who sing along). Too cute!

I came across this book after telling our local librarian that my son was interested in things that are broken, injured, and subtly dangerous. Weird? Who cares! She pointed us toward "Little Pig," and we wore out its pages. It's so kooky and funny with a meaningful message for today's helicopter parents. Thank you, Denis Roach.

A little pig that thinks his parents worry too much

This story was about a little pig that doesn't like how his parents are always worrying about him. He wishes that they will stop worrying so much about him. Little Pig wants to prove that he is capable. So one day Little Pig goes on a hiking trip with his fellow Snout Scouts. It is there that he proves that he is responsible, reliable, and capable of taking care of himself. This story teaches children to be responsible. It also lets them know that one day their parents will stop being as protective over them. The story also teaches children to listen to what their parents have to say because one day it will pay off. This book will catch the interest of many children. I would recommend it to any school teacher or parent that read to their children.

Written and illustrated by Denis Roche, Little Pig Is Capable is a completely charming color picturebook for young readers and is about a Little Pig who feels overprotected by his parents. When Little Pig's Snout Scout troop embarks on a hiking trip with a questionable guide named Ravenous, it is the Little Pig's best opportunity to show just how intelligent, self-reliant, sensible, and capable he really is! A most enjoyable storytime book, Little Pig Is Capable will prove a welcome addition to any school or community library picturebook collection for children.

What child has not wondered what their pets or toys do at night once he or she has gone to sleep. In Cynthia Rylant's newest book she imagines just this. Little Whistle, a brown guinea pig lives in a toy store. During the day, he sleeps. At night, he awakens to play with the toys who come to life. On his first night in the store, he becomes cold, not having enough bedding to keep him warm. A sailor toy gives him his blue pea coat to wear. Little Whistle is appreciative and promises to return it one day. Children are often saddened at the thought of a toy being sold and leaving the store. Rylant alleviates those fears by saying that Little Whistle did not mind when someone was sold. "Toys love being sold to children who care for them. Little Whistle knew this and understood." I have owned guinea pigs all my life and their cute faces make me smile. I purchased this book saying it was for my class and our classroom pet but honestly it was purely for me!

This book is an amazing way to teach children of quite an age range the many different ways to look at art work. Three mice take a visual journey through a painting, looking at the painting's lines, colors, and shapes. It's a great visual story so young kids love the book and older children (even some adults!) can learn of the many ways to appreciate a work of art. A must at home, in the library, and in an art class!

Written and illustrated by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace with the assistance of Linda K. Friedlaender, Look! Look! Look!, is the creative and original tale of three mice (Kiki, Alexander and Kat), and their fun exploration into the world of fine art. Following the three mice as they create their own version of a postcard featuring the elegant and detailed portrait painting of Lady Clopton, Look! Look! Look! captivates its young readers with a fun and inventive collection of art appreciation ideas and concepts throughout. Indeed, children are encouraged at one point to make their own work of art using the principles the mice have been discovering and conveying in their own efforts to observe all the details a work of art. An unusual and strongly commended addition to family, school, and community picturebook collections for children ages 5 to 8, Look! Look! Look! is enthusiastically recommended for artistic young readers as a picturebook tale of interest, information, and ideas.

The Excitement of the Library

In "Maisy Goes to the Library," Maisy just wants to sit in a favorite place and quietly read a favorite book. It seems like a great plan, but Maisy is about to get a crash-course in all the fun stuff that goes on at a library.

Maisy soon starts seeing all of her friends coming in. Charley, Eddy, Tallulah and Cyril --- they're all there! Maisy discovers that there are computers at the library, music and even exciting storytimes. But will Maisy eventually get to read that book?

This book is illustrated in the traditional Maisy style that is a bit simplistic but still fun to look at. This story stands up with "D.W.'s Library Card" (from the "Arthur" series) as an excellent introduction to the library.

My son not only learns the ABC and can also makes stories with those pictures in each page. This book stimulates small child's imagination. It is a book worth to buy.

This book was the first to catch my baby's attention. At as early as 9 months, he was selecting this book every night. He loves to pull the various flaps and moving parts himself. I've purchased other Maisy books since then, and while my son enjoys them very much, the ABC book is still his favorite. I'm buying a second copy now to replace the first one he loved to pieces.

This book is great because it is both interactive and informtive for kids. The book is full of little flaps to open and has a wheel to turn inside with different objects for kids to learn. This book is a little bit longer than the smaller Maisy books so it makes a good storytime read, it come in the oversized board book format (around 8x10 size). I highly recommend it! It is a nightly request.

This book is a treasure for the eyes. The capacity of Forman to achieve distinct character, detail, and evoke the wonder of the story is a true achievement. This is the kind of story book we used to treasure, before images blinked at us like wild mosquitoes. the art stays and simmers. Forman should have won a Caldecott. Wake up and smell the talent!

The illustrations in this book are nothing short of masterful. This is Caldecott material.

"Now settle down and listen well/To what I am about to tell/About the troubles that befell/A town and set it spinning./As such tales do, it started small,/With one wee mouse, just one, that's all,/Who one spring day came by to call-/And that was the beginning." So begins Mary Ann Hoberman's kinder and gentler adaptation of the Pied Piper. As the town is overrun with mice, the mayor looks far and wide for help, and an appealing red-caped stranger appears with a magic fan to take care of the job. As he waves his fan, an odor wafts through the air. It smells just awful to the villagers, but the mice find it alluring, and they follow the gentleman right out of town. "Some said it smelled of Brie from France,/While others swore 'twas Liederkranz/Or Gorgonzola, ripe, perchance,/Or Stilton, Swiss, or Edam..." With their problem finally solved, and the fee paid, the townspeople celebrate until they realize that their cats have followed the mice, and the dogs have chased after the cats. In no time, the children, missing their pets, also leave town. But never fear, unlike the original, this tale has a happy ending, as a little girl comes up with a creative and inventive solution that sets everything right again, in the end..... Ms Hoberman's lyrical, rhyming text begs to be read aloud, and is only outdone by Laura Forman's delightful, old-fashioned artwork. Intricate illustrations, in subdued and quiet tones are filled with charming detail, and little ones will enjoy lingering over each picture before turning the page. Perfect for youngsters 5-9, The Marvelous Mouse Man tells an old story with a new and refreshing twist and is sure to become a family favorite.

I bought this book for a quarter at a tag sale for my son. Although he's not yet old enough to be interested in it, I immediately fell in love. It is beautifully written, more of a poem than a story. Its just wonderful, there really is no other word. I am sure I will read it over and over (although for the price of it offered here, I will not be buying it for friends and relatives, as planned when I got online tonight).

I can say without exaggeration that this book changed my life. I read it over 15 years ago when I was studying Hoban as a literature student and was stuck by the bitter thread of lonliness that runs through much of Hoban's writing. I think it finds its most perfect and certainly its most concentrated expression in this work. Yes, this is a children's story and my children love it (although not as much as, say, ACE Dragon) but it is also so much more. When I first met my wife ten years ago I gave her a copy of this book. Actually, we had been going out for a month or two and she called me that day to say we shouldn't see any more of each other. She thought our relationship might have a negative impact on her career as we were work colleagues at the time. I wandered into a bookstore at lunchtime and chanced upon a copy of Marzipan Pig which I bought and left with her. Three days later she called me back to say she had made a mistake. Thus I avoided the fate of the clock in this story. Thank you Mr Hoban, many thanks indeed.

My three years old daughter is a big fan of Leo Lionni's books. This is one of her favorite stories. I just got this book two weeks ago. She asks me to read this book everyday. She is excited every time I read to her, especially the part when Matthew met Nicoletta (his future wife) and when his dusty old corner magically turns into a wonderful piece of art (or maybe it's Matthew's imagination). There're a lot of nice arts in this book too, making it a great book for children who appreciate arts.

Although the subject matter of this book initially appeared to be for an older child, it is clear that the text and illustrations appeal as strongly to the younger set. Ever since learning of Matthew the Mouse's determination to become a painter (in contravention of his parents desires that he become a M.D.) my two-year-old son (also named Matthew) has been wielding his paintbrush often and furiously. The illustrations are aesthetically pleasing and clarify the text perfectly. The text, while simple in form, provides excellent vocabulary builders (e.g., use of "embrace" rather than "hug") and also gives the reader the chance to discuss with the child many ideas and activities that take place inside and outside the home. All in all a wonderful find; a story that truly respects a child's right to follow his or her own dreams.
