Looking for a fun book for middle readers that will appeal to both boys and girls? Check out QUIGLEY MCCORMICK AND THE CURSE OF THE POLKA-DOTTED PIG. This book "stars" Quigley McCormick, a young boy who lives in a unique town called Buckletuckle, which just happens to be the most kid-friendly town on the earth. In Buckletuckle, outdoor fountains are filled with soda instead of water, kids vote in all the elections, and the town has an extra month between August (the end of summer) and September (the start of school), called Bucktember. During the month of Bucktember, kids run the town. In this story, Quigley and his sister disobey their grandparents and choose to ignore their chores and spend the day with friends at an amusement park better than most kids could ever imagine. But he and his friends find themselves on an unexpected adventure that has drastic, polka-dotted repercussions.
David Hollaway has written an engaging story that will make young readers and their parents laugh out loud. The book reminds me of the original Willie Wonka movie and the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Hollaway's writing style is so vibrant, despite the fact that the book has only a few black and white drawings at the beginning of the chapters, readers can easily visualize the town and its zany characters in brilliant Technicolor. The subtle way he incorporates moral lessons is impressive, because the book never has an authoritarian tone. QUIGLEY MCCORMICK AND THE CURSE OF THE POLKA-DOTTED PIG is fun and has an original plot. It is the first book in what is to be a series, and I can't wait to see what is in store for Quigley in future stories. Hollaway has a unique voice and a special gift that is sure to captivate children for many years to come.

Quigley McCormick is an ordinary boy in Buckletuckle, the most "kid friendly" town in the country. When Quigley's grandparents give him a long list of chores to do, Quigley sneaks out of his house to avoid them. But he soon runs into trouble of a most peculiar kind. Can he extricate himself with the help (or hinderance) of his crafty sister Moxy, or loyal buddy Oskee Nelson -- and then there's the ill-mannered Flip Stuperton. Written and illustrated by first time author David Hollaway, Qucigley McCormick And The Curse Of The Polka Dotted Pig is enthusiastically recommended and guaranteed fun reading for kids ages 9 and older.

I read this book here, and It made me squeal like a pig with delight at the madcap antics of Qunicy. He shur does make those kids seek the righteous path, and who better to know than a pig from outer space with supersonic and most excellent values!

That's the word for this book: "spendiferous".
What more can you say about a super-empowered pig with values to boot!
I read this book with my kids, and it lead to a thoughtful discussion about moral values.
One of them was suspicious at first about creatures from outer space with moral tales to tell,
but he's come to accept the pig and what he stands for: America, I'm proud of you!
Hooray for teaching kids about right and wrong!

The dog was cool (read the book!). This book is cool. The pig is ... well, a pig, albiet a very intelligent one. To heck with political correctness, here's a great, colorful, fun story that isn't afraid to demonstrate good values through actions. The story is quite good, and our kids love the illustrations. And for us, as parents, the best thing is that our kids see another example of judging right from wrong, how to act responsibly, why it's not okay to lie, and how to order a pizza from a cel-phone. Whimsical and funny, but more than just entertaining, reading this book is great learning for kids

We loved this book, and, more importantly, our kids loved it. They beg us to read it to them every night. They just love hearing about Quincy and his wonderful friends. I love it because it teaches them important lessons. Not only that but it is beautifully illustrated. I hope more Quincy's books follow

This is the best damn book on the planet! That Quincy is really one smooth-coated pig--both in style and in his values. I think he lends a commanding presence with his cape and high falutin' ideas about doing your homework and obeying the rules. I believe in this pig, and I believe in America. This is one damn fine book, one that the kids can read and read again, and I wouldn't mind it a damn bit if they grew up to be like Qunicy--though not so ugly and no so foreign.
Let's keep our country's borders intact.

This beautifully illustrated and emotionally charged childrens book left me teary eyed and filled with the spirit of Gods love for all creatures. The ever familiar nativity story of the birth of Jesus is refreshingly told through the eyes of a pack rat named Sarah. As a gift to the Crist Child she yields her most treasured possession, a shiny bead tied about the new born king's wrist with a special thread from King Davids robe, a gift from a pack rat travelling with the Three Wise Men. In so doing she experiences Gods love and understands the miracle taking place. The book makes an ideal holiday gift and can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. As a childrens book for reading it is ideally suited for ages 5 to 9.

The nativity story, one that is familiar to many, is retold from the perspective of a pack-rat named Sarah. In this children's book, Sarah learns about hope and love by giving the Baby King her most prized possession--a lovely green bead! The full-page color illustrations bring the story to life as they capture the magic and wonder of the miracle of the birth of Christ. Sarah's Bead is a delightful story that is appropriate for both young and old and would be a wonderful treasure in any family's storybook collection!

Sarah's Bead is a refreshing, warm retelling of an ageless story. I was deeply touched by this book. As a creative writing teacher, I often look for books to share with my students as a read aloud. This books explores with students and adults the joys of sacrifice, of giving, and of love. The book not only touches on a Christian theme, but a universal one that can be shared by all people of different faiths. The words of the story are beautifully enhanced by the illustrations.

The Brambly Hedge books remain one of the sweetest picture book series ever to be concocted for the kiddie set. Of these, my favorite has always been "Summer Story". The plot is not particularly complex. In it, two little mice (Dusty Dogwood and Poppy Eyebright) have become engaged and they prepare for their summer wedding. Similar in many ways to Beatrix Potter's books, the Brambly Hedge series is published small, for small readers. Kids will enjoy the pleasant story while taking particular interest in some of Barklem's more impressive drawings. Her elaborate Rube Goldbergesque illustrations of the Dairy Stump and Mill are delightful. There is an attention to detail in these books that does not go unnoticed. For those kids who are, as of yet, too young to enjoy Brian Jacques "Redwall" books, the Brambly Hedge series may be right up their alley.

I really enjoy Jill Barklem's work, especially this book. Thesummer story is one of the Brambley Hedge season books, and tells thestory of the summer courtship and marriage of two of the mice of Brambley Hill. It's hot outside in Brambley Hedge and the mice want to do nothing but sit and dip their tails in the stream, until suddenly, the hedge is buzzing trying to prepare for the upcoming wedding. The pictures are lovely, as usual, andthe sory simple and sweet. A great book for children and adults.

I was given a copy of this book as a 2-year old, and I am so excited that it has finally come back into print. This book is very endearing. It tells the story of a young mouse, Wilfred, who is celebrating his birthday. The other mice of Brambley Hedge work together to plan a special surprise for Wilfred, and have almost as good a time planning it as Wilfred does discovering it. It is a good book for bedtime reading, or just any time. Everyone will enjoy this happy tale and it's adorable characters.

Poppy Eyebright and Dusty Dogwood are mice that live near a stream. One hot summer they begin to date, and then they announce their engagement. They marry and have a very pleasant wedding ceremony with all of their mousy relatives. The book is quite interesting with its reminders of the customs of times gone by, like engagements and trousseaus. Kids can also learn from it how people use to survive hot weather without air conditioners. The book has about 800 words.

Imagine a book all about a little mouse who makes faces in the mirror with his Dad. Now imagine that mouse a cute little mouse named Toby.
This is another great book in this series. It explores emotions from sad to glad, and while some of it is just pretend, there's real warmth and love as well.
In the end, there's a real mirror to look into. You or your kids can make silly faces, or do anything else you like with it!

Set in a nurturing family environment, the story is a pleasure to read. A nice surprise for the reader appears on the last page: a mirror in which children will enjoy making their own faces.

My 2-year-old son and I love this book. It's a good way for him to learn about different emotions, and it encourages him to look in the mirror and see what his own face looks like when he is happy or sad or frightened. He likes to make the silly sounds too; during the day, he'll come up to me and say "Mommy 'Eek, eek!'".It's a great "winding down" bedtime story too, because it's about Toby getting ready for bed. I highly recommend this book and I will be buying more Toby books for Christmas for my son.

One of the sweetest children's books I've seen this year. The illustrations are so beautiful and the story is so charming you'll come back to it again and again. The plot is simple enough for the four and five year old set, but there is enough subtle content and gentle humor to the story to satisfy the six and seven year olds too. This book would even appeal to an adult friend -- especially one who loves to travel. Finally, if you are a fan of Olivia you will feel right at home with Toot and Puddle.

When Puddle got up that morning, Toot was already gone. "Puds, gone for a walk. Be back soon. T" Only Toot didn't come home that morning, or afternoon, and by dinner, Puddle had decided it was time to go out and search for him. Thinking just like his best friend, Puddle soon finds himself at the airport on a plane to Provence. "Now that was one place Toot had never been." In no time, the two old friends find each other, and after having a wonderful time in the French countryside, decide to travel on to Nepal. "They have the highest mountain in the world there..." Holly Hobbie takes the reader on another heartwarming and entertaining adventure starring her endearing pint-sized piglets, Toot and Puddle. Ms Hobbie's gentle and witty text is engaging, but it's her sweet and captivating artwork, filled with bright colors, warm humor and dazzling, playful details, that really steals the show. Youngsters 3-7, who've enjoyed the previous books in this series, will revel in this latest adventure. Toot & Puddle: Top Of The World begs to be read aloud and shared, and is a fun-filled, magical story that shouldn't be missed.

I read this book to my fourth grade class and they were hooked. We all looked forward to reading about Humphrey and his adventures with his class. Highly recommend this book for kids around the age of 8, 9, 10. We will be reading more Humphrey books this year.

Wonderful, touching story! My fourth grade class LOVES these books, and so do I. The story is a great blend of humor, heart-warming, and real life learning as little Humphrey, the class pet, shows understanding and helps his "friends" in the classroom. Wonderful!

My kids and I love all the Humphrey books. My daughter is 7 and my son is 10 and we looked forward to the stories every night. They are well- written, a pleasure to read aloud, and the kids can relate to the story because it is set in a school.

Although I am not a father myself, I can truly relate to how Liliana, the author, is trying to relate to her readers/listeners as to the fears and ultimate hinderances that we humans share. I love how she clearly and simply says, we all fear these things, we all feel these things and above all, we all can overcome these things. Way to go Liliana. You are an inspiration tom me and to as I am sure, to those young minds that we struggle to raise.

I love this book! The book is animated and carries a powerful message for children as well as adults. Since I bought this book for my two children, I have secretly begun to remind myself to dismiss obstacles and welcome courage when I am faced with my own fears. My children love reading how the Trrrembling Mouse overcomes his fear. The illustrations are bright and lively! I highly recommend this book.

I have an 11 year old that could benefit from this book very much. I plan to read it with him tonight when I get home. We live in Los Angeles, and for reasons that I still can't decipher or maybe it is just the fact that we live in this city, he's grown up full of fears. I loved the narrative, and the positive message. Simply put and to the point, just the way kids like it. Great for all ages. Congratulations Liliana, nicely done.

I am a Second Grade Teacher who read this book to my class
My children truly loved it!! It coordinates nicely with their Art Curriculum!! They have a feeling of confidence and it makes a great opporunity for a lesson on Character Education! And so begins the idea of Vincent Van Mouse. The story finds the adorable, innocent little mouse searching to find his special idea in some way. That search drives his curiosity to explore all of his friend's ideas. He creates his own journey and has a totally unexpected turn of events that reshapes his life and it leaves the reader with a happy ending. This author and illustrator is truly a talent!!

Quigley, who was known as the Hero, and his best friend, Oskee, who was known as Loyal Oskee, were excited this morning because it was Saturday and they were going to Jelly Bean Park...That was until Quigley's plans were crushed when his grandparents told him at breakfast they wanted him and Moxy, who was known as the Tattletale, to do chores today while his grandmother was gone. Quigley knew he wouldn't be able to go to the park now...While he was doing his chores, Oskee and Flip, who was known as Disrespectful Flip, rang the bell ready to go to the park...Once they found out Quigley had chores to do, they came up with a plan to help Quigley with the chores, sneak him out the house, then get him back home before Quigley's grandmother returned home while his grandfather was asleep. After the chores were completed, they were on their way to Jelly Bean Park for the adventure of magical rides, colorful creatures, and the discovery of the curse.
Quigley McCormick And the Curse of the Polka Dotted Pig is a great highly entertaining children's novel. I enjoyed how David Hollaway combined a creative magical story with a valuable message for children. This novel creates parent-child bonding moments, which are priceless. This book is a joy to read, I love Quigley he has a compassionate understanding by the end of the novel and plus he never gives up. I look forward to seeing what Quigley is up to next!!!
