If you can only get one book on rabbits, this is the book to get! Considered by many rabbit breeders, exhibitors, owners to be 'THE' book on rabbits. The authors are rabbit owners/breeders themselves and they know whereof they speak. Easy to read and understand, it includes a history of rabbits, genetics, feeding, housing, breeding, medical care, the merits of rabbits as pets, rabbits in therapy, just about anything you would ever need or want to know about rabbits. This book is well worth every penny of the cost. It's a very modest investment when you want to provide the very best for your rabbit, or rabbits, no matter why you have them.

I just checked this book out from the local library and after skimming through it, marking what I want to go back and read in detail, I am convinced that this is a book that I can't be without! This book has TONS of detailed information, including several chapters on the genetics of rabbits. It is the first book that I have found that just doesn't gloss over rabbits as a whole, but actually gets down to the nitty gritty. There's a lot of detailed information about the diseases, how to have a successful rabbitry (if that is your goal), food guidelines, the importance of vitamins, etc. Do yourself a favor: get ahold of this book!

A Fount of Knowledge that Needs a Little Tweek...

This reference is an excellent source of information in regards to management systems, feeds & feeding, breeding, production, etc. What I find lacking is how little effort seemed to go into the breed illustrations. Rabbits depicted are poorly posed and therefore make a very unsatisfactory representation of the breeds' description. If you can get past that little bump, the book - for its wealth of knowledge is an excellent resource for rabbit breeders or those considering embarking on that adventure.

This reference (notice I didn't say "book") is incredibly valuable for first timers with no animal experience through long time, large scale producers. When I started out with my first pet rabbit, I used the '96 edition all the time for freak-out moments like a crusty ear or just to satisfy my curiosity. Now that I'm almost done with college and ready to start up my own herd again, the 2000 edition proves twice as useful. Make sure you put your name and address on the inside cover!

This is a classic in raising rabbits commercially. Not the latest edition (the 8th edition is the newest), but still very useable. The main difference between this edition and the newest is that there are no color photos. This book contains practical important information on raising rabbits commercially that simply cannot be found elsewhere. Not a how-to book for pet rabbit owners, but a serious manual for producing high quality healthy rabbits in an economical manner. I would not attempt to raise rabbits commercially without this "bible" on the bookshelf.

I ordered this book for my son's to give his teacher as a gift. It was prefect! He had a Classroom Guinea Pig, plus his teachers name begins with a "B"! She love it. Very cute story.

Sammy: The Classroom Guinea Pig is a book about a guinea pig which lives in a classroom and is taken care of by the students and the teacher, Ms. B. One school morning, Sammy bursts into a frantic scramble after the students have settled into their desks, worrying them. The students try to figure out what is wrong with the guinea pig, allowing Ms. B to use this as a learning experience for all.

We've had this book for almost a year now and I never get tired reading it to my four year old. The characters are sweet (especially Sammy!), inquisitive and endearing. Ms. B, the teacher, explores questions and answers on what could and could not be wrong with the guinea pig, allowing the students to think and reason on their own. This is an educational book (I had no idea that guinea pigs loved cantalope rinds), but very sweet and easy to read. It captures the imagination of my four year old and I'm certain there will be a guinea pig in his near future.

Who can resist a Henkes book? Move over Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse and Julius the Baby of the World...another book by Henkes which is surely destined to be a children's classic has arrived!
We parents remember what it is like to have a treat all of our own and our reluctance to share it, and our preschoolers can certainly relate to the dilemma! "I want to share it but if I do I will have less for myself". When a mishap befalls the peppermint stick the sharing process becomes much easier and both girls in the story are delighted with the outcome. After all, Sheila Rae was planning on sharing from the very beginning. (Or so she says!)A fun story with adorable pictures.

A board book with a story

Review Date: 2006-02-02
Most board books are descriptive - 'Cow says moo...Sheep says baa..etc.'. But this one has a storyline, amusing and cleverly constructed characters, and very expressive illustrations. It is amazing that this kind of a story has been made to fit in a board book format.

The story is about two mice - Sheila Rae, the older sister, has a peppermint stick that her younger sister, Louise, covets. Sheila Rae teases her in a typical big sisterly way, and says she can have a lick if she can guess how many stripes there are on the stick. Sheila Rae knows that Louise cannot guess correctly. In the end, Sheila Rae climbs high up on a stool and some books, and says Louise can have the stick if she can reach it. But then, Sheila Rae herself stumbles and falls, and the peppermint breaks into two pieces, one for each sister. A clever and face-saving solution for both sisters who then hug and kiss.

The illustrations are simple but very cute and convey the ages and attitudes of the two characters - the smug, teasing older sister who looks six, and a smaller younger sister (maybe three years old) who follows her big sister around and hangs on to her every word, while clutching her teddy bear.

This book is perfect to read aloud with preschoolers (like Louise). Slightly older children (the Sheila Raes) can read the book by themselves. It is a very interesting book that beginning readers will want to read again and again.

If you haven't met Kevin Henkes or his little mice characters, you and your child (or your grandchild) are missing a great experience. In this book, Sheila Rae has a peppermint stick that she's having a hard time sharing. The illustrations are delightful, and the situations in all of Henkes' books are true to life, so any child can relate and learn something without a bit of sermonizing. If you like this story, try "Owen's Marshmallow Chick" and "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse". Don't miss the expression in his characters' eyes as you flip through the books. Your little ones will love reading and rereading them. The board books are just right for the tiniest hands. My one-year old grandson, three-year old granddaughter, and the students in my reading classes are all Kevin Henkes fans. If you have a chance to meet him, grab the opportunity. He's a shy, gifted author and illustrator.

A favourite of young and old alike at the Watts' house, this book has it all. (Ignore the review that says Louise grabs the stick and breaks it...she does no such thing.) It's perfect for reading aloud--or for reciting by those who aren't yet reading. The brief, well-chosen text lends itself easily to expressive vocal interpretation. Loads of personality are packed into the simple, cartoon-ish illustrations. All this plus a great plot and twist on a child's level make this book one of our most cherished.

I originally bought this book titled Soft Touches of Harmony from a Heartfelt Moon by Mickey Pig Knuckles because it contains two of my favorite works- A Picture Of Us and Kiss You And Whisper. I have since found all of Mickey Pig Knuckles poems now my favorites. His work hits to the core of human emotional nature, what we feel about love, when it happens, and when we lose it. Each poem expresses a natural beauty, sadness and joy, all mixed together, much like real human living emotions. If you do not have this book you are missing an important element of living reality through his talented gift of literature.

This author known as Mickey Pig Knuckles is someone I had never read of before a few weeks ago. After just two or three readings of his work, I was and am now hooked for life. Nothing radiates quite as beautiful as his heartfelt collection in his book titled Soft Touches of Harmony from a Heartfelt Moon. His truth to be told masterfully, emotional love uncovered to be deeply felt by all, and raw emotion shot right at you his readers. Emotions will have no choice but to be wrought from his work. I was completely oblivious to this poetic man. But now, after having read what I consider his best, I look forward to further books by him. I can't help but accept him as one of the greatest poets of ALL time! You need to have this book!

I introduce myself as a world-renowned poet with many poems published in various books along with my own. I was born in Springfield Illinois and family moved to Colorado at the young age of three. I love living in the Rocky Mountains and really love the natural setting of Colorado. I have been an active writer of short stories for many years when I found a very special girl who found and brought out this beautiful gift of poetry within me to be shared with the world. I have two brothers, one step brother, and one sister with many nephews and nieces.

I have always been in tune with my emotional being. Many say I am sensative to life's ups and downs. Each day is a new beginning and should be lived to the fullest. One should always strive to make the best of life; We are only given one life to live. I strive to reach out to the world and share my passion for poetry in hopes of enkindling warm smiles. There is nothing more inspiring than daily life; Life is poetry in motion, great poets reflect emotion. I write on a variety of topics, so there is something for everyone to savor. I hope you enjoy my creative writing style as my poetry flows from my heart to yours.

" Through My Words"
Hey, is that you? Is that you looking at me? I feel you sitting there
Hey, I feel you, I feel you looking at me, reading my words as you stare
I am a famous poet, have you read my works? Do you know me?
I paint with words of art, making them come to life, for you to see
I reach out, Through My Words, so you will know me
I can reach deeply, inside of you, and really touch your soul
Causing a fondness, just for me, as our friendship will grow
Come travel with me, we'll be together, a brief journey of our life
I will comfort you, and for a moment, I will remove your strife
Through My Words, within your minds eye, a vision of your dreams
A real life experience, written for you, better than it seems
For a brief moment, I share with you, would be really great
Together we will, erase this thing, that we all call hate
For a brief moment, together we can, make a better place
When we come back, you will feel, a smile on your face
Sometimes you read, you just might hear, my poet speaking voice
Touching you, Through my Words, gives me total rejoice
I am here, looking at you, while you are sitting there
Through My Words, that you read, as you sit and stare!!!!!

A belated discovery

I have only just caught up with this book 14 years after it was published. Kisor is very good on how he managed a life as a deaf person who operates orally in a hearing world, and manages to be quite tactful in dealing with the subject of the Deaf -- people who use sign language. He is perhaps more tactful than he really should be in discussing the ignorance of a lot of educators of the severely hearing-impaired and the rather patronizing "poor-you" attitude they often take.

I can say this because I have only a little more hearing than Kisor -- and for the same reason, meningitis at the age of 3. I am ten years older than he but remember well some of the stages he describes so accurately and honestly. Like him, I was lucky in my early teachers and in being kept away from schools for the deaf.

It does need to be said that cognitive psychologists and students of child language have learned a great deal about child language development since Kisor and I were children and even since his book was published in 1991. Their progress dates from Noam Chomsky's destruction of behaviorist notions of language almost 50 years ago. I hope very much that things have changed significantly in the education of the deaf and severely hearing-impaired.

With luck, students will recognize that Kisor is describing a bygone era. But it is an era that was and is still well worth describing.

I read this book for an ASL class in college and wow. This book is great. An amazing autobiography written by a deaf man, Henry Kisor who has managed to exist in a hearing world as a deaf man strictly by lip reading. He has been a journalist and this is amazing to me. A wonderful story written in the point of view of a deaf man and his lifelong journey to success and living in the hearing world. Reading this book has made me take a look at my life and made me feel as if I could do anything.

I read this book back in 93 when I had just lost my hearing. I was 14 and dealing with suddenly becoming deaf. Most books about Deafness are written by physicians, or parents of the deaf, or children of the deaf, and not by the deaf themselves. Kisor's stories about lipreading and growing up and just being Deaf were wonderful for me to read. It gave me hope... if he is totally Deaf and can accomplish that much, then I, with a little bit of hearing left, certainly should be able to. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone deaf who is oral, anyone late deaffened, or anyone just interested in reading about the trials and joys of a hearing loss.

What should our attitude be towards the deaf? Kisor gives us good insight with his memoir which is beautifully, sensitively and humorouly written. Some would term him an outcast to both the deaf culture and the hearing culture, since he lipreads and doesn't sign. Can't possibly be happy because he can't fully participate in hearing world, he's missing so much. But Kisor disagrees.

He achieved more than most hearing, having accumulated great English language skills. He demonstrates with the rare book written about deafness from a deaf author. His title is fascinating, since it is from story regarding his five-year old son and the nuances lipreading has trouble discerning.

Yes, improvements have happened and will continue with behavioral psychology and deafness, but here the spirit of the human inside is spoken of, something that no program can really guarantee success, but determination, help and support will aid.

This marvelous memoir contributes much to this cause. It is a most wonderful read for all interested in what a deaf person in a hearing world might be going through, especially the emotional strains deafness brings with it. Much to be gleaned here.

The artwork in this book is fairly unsophisticated (in fact, in some places, it's pretty amateurish), but the clever story and cute mice make up for it.

It's intriguing to watch how the authors manage to describe the president's constitutional duties in easy-to-follow rhyming verses. Against long odds, they do it. E.g, "The president is required to study each "bill" / That Congress delivers from Capitol Hill / If he signs it, a bill becomes law -- it's approved / If he gives it a "veto," it's rejected, removed."

My kids love to find their favorite mice, which sometimes are slightly hidden on the page. I like the thought that they are learning -- even just a little bit.

Excellent book for kids!!...I had never heard of this author or title prior to today. The main character of the book is a Parisian mouse named Anatole. He is a bicycle riding mouse who is always in search of food for his very large family. After he discoveres that humans don't like it when mice dig through their trash, he develops a plan to make his talents helpful for people. His efforts pay off and he becomes a hero to his family of mice and to the humans who benefit from his efforts.

Even the youngest of children will understand the themes of this book. Children who may see themselves as insignificant in a busy household will learn great lessons from Anatole. Anatole is a Caldecott Honor Book. Even though this book is currently out of print, it should be searched for at your local library. Nevertheless I will look for other books from Eve Tutus. Vive Anatole!!

I am past 50 years old now, and have read thousands of books, but one of my very favorites is Eve Titus's "Anatole".
I even still have the actual book that I read all those years ago. It's in great shape and the illustrations by Paul Galdone are perfect and very "French".
You should buy a couple of good cheeses and introduce them to your child after you read Anatole to them, or if they read it themselves. and they will remember that with loving fondness for the rest of their lives.

Whoever reads this magical book will soon be starving for cheese!
After all those years, I can still see the little French mouse and his comrades in my mind, bicycling into Paris late at night for their cheese run.
Everything about this book is positive and upbeat and a wonderful influnce on children of all ages.

I still love Anatole and read it often. I highly recommend it.

We give "Angelina and the Princess" 5 stars. The ballet students have been asked to dance for Her Royal Highness, the Princess of Mouseland. Mr.Lightfoot, the director of the famous Royal Ballet Company, was coming to help Angelina's dance teacher, Miss Lilly, choose the best ballerinas for the special performance. On the morning of the tryouts Angelina woke up feeling terrible. Her mother said she could not go to ballet school that day. You will enjoy reading this book to see if Angelina does get chosen to dance for the Princess.

beautifully illustated, heartwarming childrens stories. Even though the Angelina stories are geared towards girls, my little boy, at 8, enjoyed these as well, especially when mom read to him. These are good stories to read to your child at bedtime.

The artwork is detailed and delightful to look at-you'll see new things each time you look, and children love that that every scene is filled with many little mice.

This Angelina story deals with doing your best-even if you're not picked to lead. Each book is filled with wonderful life lessons told in a gentle, non preachy way.

I highly recommend this series for any child.

When Angelina Ballerina finds out that her ballet school will be putting on a performance for the Princess of Mouseland, she couldn't be more excited. She stays up all night practicing and practicing, only to wake up feeling sick, and unable to dance. However, she does try, and ends up with only a chorus part in the performance. Disappointed, she vows never to attend ballet school again, until her Mother tells her to be happy with the part that she has. Agreeing, Angelina Ballerina goes back to ballet school only to save the day once again.

ANGELINA AND THE PRINCESS is an adorable addition to the ANGELINA BALLERINA book series. As always, Helen Craig's illustrations are breathtaking, and will capture the heart's of all readers, young and old, as will the wonderful, moral-building story by Katharine Holabird. A must-have for all.

In this sequel to Angelina Ballerina, Angelina learns that her ballet school is to put on a performance for the Princess of Mouseland. Angelina is crushed, though, when she gets sick in time for the tryouts. Forced to settle for a supporting role, she takes her mother's advice and determines to do her best at the part she is given. This is the story of Angelina's triumph!

Once again the unbeatable duo of Katharine Holabird (author) and Helen Craig (illustrator) combine to create a supremely lovable book. My ten-year-old daughter tore through this book, thoroughly enjoying the story. Yes, it wasn't a challenge to her reading ability, but she loved the story, and I appreciate any book that keeps her reading! Both my daughter and I highly recommend this book.

My daughter and I both love this book!

"Angelina and the Princess" is the first of the Angelina series my daughter and I have, but we plan to get the rest as we love this so much. Angelina is a tiny white mouse who yearns to be feminine and sweet, but is sometimes headstrong and silly--just like most girls I know (including my five-year old daughter!). Angelina has a dance recital coming up and she is pining away for a major role. However, as she's sick on the day of auditions, she doesn't do well and in fact, barely is able to crawl back home and into her worried mother's arms. She knows she did poorly, and her mother admits as much too, which brings me to one of the things I love about this book--there's no sugar-coating the fact that Angelina has gotten herself into a pickle. It's a storybook, and a fantasy at that, but it's realistic enough to keep the edge off the sweetness.

Angelina is counseled by her mother to do her very best. I don't want to give away the ending, but by keeping a cheerful attitude and trying to do her best for the whole dance company, Angelina is amply rewarded. It's a story with a moral, but the moral isn't presented in a sickeningly sweet way.

The illustrations by Helen Craig are truly a treat. Set vaguely in a Victorian England mousedom, they depict tiny cottages with climbing vines, drapey dresses with floral prints, tiaras, bouquets, adorable furniture, and so on. Three cheers to both Helen Craig and author Katharine Holabird for a book which is a joy to read and great fun to peruse just for the illustrations alone!

I'm "ghost-writing" this review for my 9 year old daughter:
"I LOVED this book and I think its really funny when Geronimo misses four good vacations (the beach, the mountains, an adventure, and Egypt) and when he got stuck in a half a cheese slice hotel! I read all the Geronimo Stilton books in my school and local library I can find and I have to say I can't choose a favorite because they are all so good!!"

A hit in a series of hits

It all started when Trap invited Geronimo to solve a mystery on Pirate Island. So they used this hot air balloon. Before long, they realize that they are being shot by...CATS!

The big G Geronimo has done it again with a great adventure story, Attack of the Bandit Cats. The illustrator of Attack of the Bandit Cats is Matt Wolf. Can't imagine it? Well believe it the writer of a book with a mouse had a guy with wolf in his name illustrate. Also captured by cats was probably Geronimo, Thea, Trap, and Benjamin's the five main mice worst nightmare.

Thea, Benjamin, and Trap convince Geronimo Stilton to go with them to Silver Island, but instead they get captured by cat bandits. The bandit cats want to cook Geronimo and his friends so they can eat them for dinner. They manage to set a fire and scare the cats so bad that they forget that the ship was made of metal and they still jump off their ship. Geronimo, Thea, Benjamin, and Trap discover the treasure room were they find the first quarter to mouse kind. Then they become famous, but they don't keep all the money.

This book is great and I can't believe this book wasn't out already when I was born. It has great illustration with fancy words. Incredible gold or even platinum sentence fluency.[She sounded as if her tail was stuck in slobbertooths high speed blender!]This book is out of this world and can't be beat, five star not three or four five!
