Piano The Books

"Busoni and the piano" is the sort of title a Busoni fan would fall for, especially if he or she is a pianist. So I did. But aside from the hunger of specific Busoni-piano related subjects and details, I found that the author of this book is an interpreter of Busoni's personality, writing as if Busoni had been an old friend or relative of his. I must say that a lot of what Sitsky says is very inspiring, and I am grateful that many words have been spent on Busoni "and" the piano, rather than Busoni "at" the piano or Busoni' work as a transcriber, etc. It is quite obvious that Busoni carries along a hidden, almost esoteric quality and there is also a great deal af collective memory of past artistic treasures and styles in his complex musical style and idiom. Busoni can strike for his classical (in the Greek-Roman sense) redondances as well as for his modernisms, but the all-embracing knowledge that underlies his creative work is something that can certainly make a change in the artistic and aesthetic sensitivities of those that love and understand his music. It appears that Sitsky does understand it in an authoritative manner, conveying also the humanistic nature of the composer. I wish Sitsky had gome more into that mysterious realm of Busoni's aesthetics, I don mean what was written in the well known writings, but rather what was "said", or "stated" in his sound world. Maybe he will, and I will be an enthusiastic admirer of his new work. "Busoni and the Piano" can also serve as a fairly detailed catalogue of Busoni's piano works. Maybe an updated edition of it could present new recordings of Busoni's music, why not? Carlo Grante

These songs are "art songs" but livelier than the general
somber introspective stuff.

As the rather pithy description of this "Candide" score states, this is complete vocal score according to the 1989 Scottish Opera performance, conducted by Leonard Bernstein. There have been alterations made to the original lyrics, and anyone familiar with the 1956 Broadway production will notice that "The Best of All Possible Worlds" is no longer about marriage, but is now deals with multiple topics of absurdity (and, as this is my review, I feel as though I can say I like the updated version more). The new lyrics are thanks to a slew of folks, including Stephen Sondheim and Bernstein himself.

The score has been beautifully set by Boosey and Hawkes and includes a page detailing the different character's vocal ranges. The publisher also lists possible doublings of chorus members and differentiates between singing and non-singing roles. A breakdown of the orchestration follows (it's a fairly large pit, too). As is standard with show music, the score contains a piano reduction of the orchestration. There are no instrumental cues (the only flaw, in my opinion). Several appendices are included which include an alternate musical number, and the running order of several different productions of the show.

This is just my opinion, but I say buy it before it goes out of print.

This was purchased with some trepidation. As music scores are generally expensive and usually in the area of 4 or 5 pages, I thought an entire book of Sarasate for relatively little price must come at the expense of quality. It does not. Dover has done a wonderful service in bringing these to the violin- and piano-minded public. The pages are clean and clear; the book sturdy, and the separate violin part for all pieces is a surprising bonus. Music includes * Zigeunerweisen * Romanza andaluza * Jota navarra * Zapateado * El canto del ruisenor * Playera * Habanera * and "Carmen" Concert Fantasy.

I love this vocal selections book for Carousel! It worked wonderfully for audtion pieces and as pieces that can just be played and sung for fun. It has great arrangements of all the best songs! I highly recommend this book for any theater lover!

I am two years into teaching myself guitar, and this book was (obviously) helpful in giving me the chords to play along with the Some Hearts album. A lot of online websites give out guitar chords and tabs for free but the official releases are always completely accurate. My only complaint would be the same as with all guitar chord books - you have to turn the pages in the middle of a verse to see how to play the next bit. Wish it would be fold-out like a poster.

Markings are very accurate even compared with the critical edition, and there is some music here that is very hard to find in commercial releases. The solo version of the Faure Ballade and the Debussy Morceau de Concours come to mind. Vol. I is hit and miss, since it doesn't have the complete works of composers like Alkan, for example, but you can't go wrong with this one.

I teach piano and think this is a great beginners series for children. Though the pictures are aimed toward younger children, the content is appropriate for all children. I have beginners in 1st through 7th grade, and am pleased with all of the material that it covers! This is my favorite series to teach from so far.
