A marvelous music memoir

Very few of us have an inkling of what a piano tuner's duties might entail. Thankfully, Denele Pitts Campbell shares some of her experiences with us in this lovely memoir. "I sometimes see my professional duty as an almost sacred task, a ministration to eternal muses which give music to speak what words cannot say in questions or answers that are never clearly formed." (page 8) Wow! We accompany her on this noble mission as she travels the back roads of Arkansas to get to her customers -- the payers as well as the players. Hers is the kind of job that gets her out and traveling through the landscape, which she seems to enjoy almost as much as the pianos and people she meets along the way. She visits and performs her work at a variety of venues: private homes of all kinds, churches, schools, concert halls. Each has it own unique demands; and to say she has seen a wide variety of keyboards is the ultimate understatement. Still, one woman can only do so much, and Campbell can't create a concert-hall Steinway from a rinkey-tink mouse-house spinet. Issuing death sentences on mistreated instruments -- ones left too long exposed to the elements (dirt floors, barns, mice, snakes (!), extreme humidity, or extreme temperatures) -- is seemingly the toughest part of her job, especially if it means removing the possibility of music from a deserving but impoverished home. And the reader has to wonder: is Campbell of a dying breed, a fading past? As electronics and computers take over our lives, will our need for piano tuners diminish in return? After reading this book, one hopes not.

I love this book, because it makes it much easier for me to sit at home at the piano and pick out the notes for the songs.
It gives the piano notes, guitar chords, and lyrics, so you can sit at home and recreate the whole sound...well, as much as you can without the boys.
I definitely recommend this book of sheet music for any *NSYNC fans who like to play the songs off the cd player or cassette player.

These arrangements are typical of Mark Hayes.....wonderful arrangements that sound more difficult than they actually are. The Advanced rating, in my opinion, should be changed to moderately advanced. This is a wonderful collection of contemporary worship songs from years back (They'll Know We Are Christians by Our Love and Sweet, Sweet Spirit) and from recent years (Above All, Here I Am to Worship,etc.). You will not be disappointed with this book!

I have been using ORGAN TECHNIQUE: MODERN AND EARLY for less than a month with three students who are just beginning organ study. I am very pleased with the content of the book, and how it is laid out. There is attention to details that other organ books that I have used in the past do not include.
I like the specific instructions on manual and pedal technique, and I am particularly pleased with the exercises and the selections of organ literature that have been included in this book.
I am very pleased with this book.

Johann Jakob Froberger was a master of keyboard music. This collection, a Dover reprint, contains dozens of toccatas, ricercari, fantasias and capriccios, all beautifully engraved and readable at either piano (harpsichord) or organ. All the pieces are set in two staff notation and for the most part can be played at the piano. There are a very few instances where a foot pedal of the organ would be helpful where a large reach in the left hand occurs, but 99% of the music is realizable on the piano. In those rare instances, a rolled chord will suffice on the piano, not so on the harpsichord. This music, incidentally, sounds beautiful on the modern piano.
I was particularly surprised, since this was my first exposure to Froberger's keyboard music in any quantity, at the great creative variety and awesome invention in these pieces. Much early baroque music has been overlooked, in my opinion, due to the overwhelming productivity and creative genius of late baroque composers like JS Bach, Domenico Scarlatti, and Handel. But more and more 17th century keyboard music is making its way into affordable reprints. The period was one of great importance in the evolution of baroque music and deserves much greater attention than it has received to date.
I cannot recommend this volume highly enough.

It was very stimulating and evocative to me to hold this book in my hand, and to see Fela Sowande's face on the cover. It brought back the memory of this unique person, who was known in his village of Abeokuta as Chief, philosopher, and high traditional priest. It was very heartening. I am happy to see a book published about a friend of mine whom I knew since 1957, when I attended a lecture he gave in New York City about the musical customs and traditions of Nigeria. We later shared the same office at Howard University, and taught together at Kent State University in relation to his program on faculty development. At the time I knew him, he did not present to me his organ compositions because at that time in his life he was focusing primarily on African culture and education issues, but now I have the chance for the first time, after all these years, to get to know his organ works, thanks to the author, Godwin Sadoh.
I am so happy to see that the author, the Nigerian ethnomusicologist, composer, and organist Godwin Sadoh, has brought about a very outstanding book, which contains a wealth of representative photos of Sowande from throughout his life, as well as excerpts of his organ works. The book is a must to be read by people who are interested in the music of Nigeria and the philosophy behind the Yoruba culture. It should also appeal to people who are interested to know about Fela Sowande and his background, because this is the first time that a book about him has been available to the public.

The ORGAN WORKS of FELA SOWANDE
It was my great pleasure to recieve a copy of Godwin Sadoh's work on Fela Sowande, The ORGAN WORKS of FELA SOWANDE.
I was closely associated with Fela Sowande from early 1975 until his death in March of 1987. We worked closely together musicaly, philosophically and personally at Kent State University and Randolph House. I was proud to sponcer his American Citizenship, and was honored to be his close friend and son.
This long awaited book is in the vangard of new publications about Fela Sowande. It is well written and beautifully organised.
Godwin Sadoh describes Sowande's view of the relationship of African culture with traditional art and music, and how old and new values can, in a balanced way, be combined to create a new and meaningful metaphor. A traditional melody that is expressed in a new way with new instruments or technique, is such an example of honoring the old with the new.
Sadoh technically describes the music in such a way as not to loose the reader. The history is acurate and this portion of Sowande's life and work are wonderfully portrayed. Plentiful photographs illustrate the evolution of Sowande's life and work. This book relates how the inspiration of African tradition and culture inspired the music of Sowande as well as his Pan African philosophy. John Coletrane, Eugene Hancock and many others were inspired in their artistic indeavors through knowing Fela Sowande.
As a historian, musician, and beloved friend, I highly recommend this book.

This classic is one of the best piano exercise books you can buy. It covers all the major techical problems of the piano. To name a few: finger independence, chord and scale passages, hands crossing, extensions, wrist vs finger action, etc.
Please note, however, this is not an easy book. That happens very much because (but that is one of the book's great advantages) the exercises are made to be practised in all the scales, contrary to a book like "Hanon", so I would recomend it to any pianist who has a two-three years experience and has made the first part of "Hanon" exercises.
Many exercises are the most boring you can get, but belive me, it is worth the effort. Just try this book for a week and you will certantly see a difference.
This is also a great work for correcting hand problems like bent fingers or streched out ones, bad wrist position, etc.

Paint and Piano is a witty page-turner, which reads even more like a Jane Austen favorite than Bennett Williamson's first two historical romance novels. There are plenty of well-rounded characters in this wonderful approach to the subject of marrying off one's daughters.

I tagged this book as Historical Fiction and Historical Romance but I also have to say that it is very much a comedy too.
The story revolves around the Hudson Twins and their Mother's attempts to help facilitate an excellent match. Cadence loves piano and Florence loves to Paint. The twins are quite different in their personalities. Cadence is calm and quiet, while Florence is more flamboyant and carefree. Their Father, Mr. Hudson, is hilarious in his incessant teasing of the family members. The town is full of quite entertaining busybodies who are constantly curious about all their neighbors, most especially the Hudson girls. I became very intrigued by all the twists and turns of the story and was delightfully surprised by the ending. I highly recommend it.

This book has amazing music for those who like the soundtrack from Pearl Harbor. It is about intermediate level and sounds quite nearly as the soundtrack, it just obviously dosen't have the violin to make it perfect.
Wonderful Book

I am 15 years old and I have been playing the piano since 12. I found this book to be somewhat challenging for me to play, but with a little more practicing than I usually do on pieces it became one of my favorite books to have with me at my piano. I HIGHLY recommend this FANTASTIC BOOK to any pianist that loves the music in the movie...these piano pieces really do sound just like them. Especially Tennessee...which has now become my favorite. Great book, great buy; Hans Zimmer did a great job. =] Totally worth the money.
