Scott Joplin best of Ragtime

This is an excellent collection of Scott's waltz's, marches and most of his rag's. For more selections of his rag's I suggest the book Scott Joplin's Complete Piano Rags. It is avaliable from Amazon also. Both of these books will give the pianist a very good selection of his songs to play at an intermediate to advanced level. Still missing A Real Slow Drag though. If you are a ragtime enthusiast check out the Ragtime festival in Sedalia Missouri around the first of June each year. It is excellent.07692103095222000-06-10

Scott Joplin best of ragtime

This is an excellent and well written book of Scott's rags, waltz's and marches. It has more of the marches and waltz's than the other book I highly recommend (Complete Piano Rags) that has more of the Rag's such as two or my favorites the Pineapple Rag and the Paragon Rag. An essential book for those who admire Agee

In truth I myself am not a huge fan of Agee's work, but I do have admiration for the man himself. He was a wholly committed, passionate and intense writer who was consumed by his desire to achieve great literary success. I've heard a critic call him the James Dean of American literature, and while I think that's a bit preposterous, I do find the analogy amusing and at least somewhat true. Agee has always fascinated me, even though I really can't stand "A Death in the Family," which -- despite flashes of simply brilliant writing -- I think is one of those over-indulgent, self-consciously literary novels that high-minded and self-consciously literary people are quick to shower with awards. <br /> <br />But this is not a review of "A Death in the Family." This little book, a collection of correspondence Agee wrote from the time he was in high school to not long before his tragic death at the age of 45, is one of those little gems that fans of the author will cherish and even non-fans (such as myself) will find interesting. Simply put, if you love Agee's work and are even remotely interested in knowing more about the man, then this is a must-read. <br /> <br />Whatever doubt I had about Agee's motivations and skills as a writer are put to rest here. It's shocking how emotional, well-read, thoughtful, and just plain intense Agee was, even at a fairly young age. His letters to his mentor, Father Flye, reveal everything from his opinions of various authors to his obsession of achieving greatness to his suicidal impulses and his work habits. It's really quite eye-opening. <br /> <br />There's surprisingly little biographical material about Agee out there, despite his strong following and his many admirers. He's often considered one of the great American writers of the 20th Century, and while I hardly think he wrote enough (or well-enough, for that matter) to qualify for such praise, I can't deny the charisma and power his image exudes. Excellent transcriptions -- a treasure!

Extremely accurate transcriptions of bill evans' trio - with all three parts - piano, drums and bass. <br /> <br />I would consider this intermediate to advanced because if you are playing the pieces up to tempo - to get the syncopation and bill evans feel - a more intermediate/advanced pianist would feel more comfortable playing and mastering these pieces than a beginner. <br /> <br />You will appreciate his artistry when you see the notes on paper. Whether you want to play just the piano part or play w/ your trio - I would really recommend this book for true bill evans fans. I especially love this book because "moonbeams" is my favorite bill evans album, and to have the exact piano music to "re: person i knew" is one of the greatest finds - it is gorgeous. This 3rd volume of transcriptions is an essential purchase for the aspiring Jazz musician. The transcriptions are very accurate as far as I can tell. The Piano features on the top two staves, bass on the 3rd stave and the drums on the 4th. <br /> <br />These performances are all from the middle or late part of Bill Evans career and you will probably be able to find the actual recordings on CD if you hunt around. Sadly the book does not tell you from which recordings the transcriptions are taken. <br /> <br />A word of warning, these transcriptions are not for beginners, they are technically demanding and unless you are blessed with superb reading skills and a natural Jazz feel you will have to work hard to perfect these. 06340518145662006-06-09
