A Toda Madre

This story started out at the Orange Show in the 1960's. That caught my attention right away. I remember the Orange Show in the 1960's quite well. That is where all the ruca's went either with their boy friend or to find a boy friend.

This book is somewhat poetic, somewhat nostalgic. The life and times of the Rivera family bring so many memories flooding back about the way we were in the Mt. Vernon barrio. This story really hit home. The places Pimentel mentions in the book such as Esperanza Tienda and The Mitla Cafe are places I frequented in the 1960's.

I've read other reviews and they all seem to focus on machismo or feminism. I focus on the realism and familiarity.

Hats off to Pimentel and his simple writing style. I was really drawn into this story and it's characters, especially Soledad and Gabby. My heart went out to Gabby. I know he had it rough being the youngest child and watching the infidelity of his parents and the only other male figure in his home life (Bert) going off to war.

Bert was the emotionally stronger, older brother. I have seen many vatos from the barrio who have that same feeling that they have to get out of the rut that the barrio brings. A friend of mine used to say, "I feel like the world is passing me by."

This book is "a toda madre." I highly recommend it. I've already told others about it.

A great book that deserves a wider audience

We need more fiction like this. Ricardo Pimentel's ear for dialogue is pitch perfect and the novel is a beautiful evocation of a place and time. I hope this is not his last work of fiction.

Far more up to date, comprehensive, and non-dogmatic than Marx's writings on capitalism. A must for anyone starting to study socialism in any form.

Pierre Jalee has written a brilliant pamphlet which is a resource tool for all who are concerned by the blind faith in free markets that is prevalent the world over.

Jalee gets to the core of the capitalist system and free markets, and also deals with the exploitation of the third world by imperialist powers. This book enables the user to gain a thorough understanding of basic capitalist and marxian economics.

A must read for anyone concerned by the dangerous proliferation of free markets. Especially important to people in Asia and Africa.

This book is still available in India!!!

I am a preservice teacher and I bought this book for my earth science class for a project. It was an excellent resource and had many great activities and games that teachers can do with students to teach them about volcanoes, earthquakes, fault lines, rocks and earth topics. The activities are very user friendly and easy to implement in the classroom. I am definately going to use this when I get my own classroom!

The perfect activity book for a rainy day!

You CAN be filled with the Holy Spirit -- and it is not a grotesque experience; it does not involve ugliness, or chaos, confusion, fear or some bizarre transformation into a barking animal. Garrie Williams' wonderful book explores the Biblical concept of the "infilling of the Spirit," and it is a loving, gentle, and tender embrace with the God of order, the God of wonder, the Healing Shepherd. Get this book which always leads to the greater light of the Bible, and discover how you can partake of the "peace which surpasses all understanding," and how to live your everyday life "more abundantly. The Holy Spirit longs to be your best friend, your constant companion, and compass to find your way out of a lost world. All of Garrie Williams' books are wonderful, and he is an incredible speaker who shines out the love of God -- his books make sense, are logical, and always Biblically based. This book is a wonderful tool for personal Bible study, for group study, or a place to go for answers. Nondenominational.

My son found the entire text helpful in our learning process of book reports. I homeschool and we try to find books to help him learn on his own, this book was perfect for it. He was able to easily follow the directions and apply them to real reports that I require he write for me once each month on a book he has finished. We used this for our fifth grade curriculm writing.

This is a great book!

Pauline Kael as a prophet of our multi-media age
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 1997-02-14
Pauline Kael was a prophet of the times: she knew that people would eventually be addicted to the movies. But she was perceptive enough to realize from the onset that this addiction went beyond the inescapable, because grippingly overwhelming, magic of storytelling. She understood that movies were addictive because not only do they take on a life of their own, they also created a world of their own --- cult worship, technology wizardry, critical discourse, the vagaries of box-office results, and all that jazz. These Ms. Kael grasped, and armed with her stylish wit and whip, she rallied on to the cultural battlefronts of what would turn out to be our multi-media age. This book is therefore a must-read, because beyond the disparate individual movie reviews, Ms. Kael allows us to appreciate the intellectual and moral landscape of our times. She shows us that behind things are the more important scheme of things. For her, the reel is for real. And these days, who can say it isn't so

I grew up reading Pauline Kael's reviews, mostly by walking to the public library in the small town where I grew up -- I'd snag the New Yorker off the shelf and immerse myself in what she had to say about movies, many of which would never come to my town. But I was enthralled.

I love her reviews now for the same reason I loved them then -- she makes me want to see the movies she writes about. And more than that, she makes me want to see movies, period. Her passion for the medium -- even when she doesn't like a film -- is contagious, and she expresses it beautifully.

Surprisingly to me, in these early reviews she frequently quotes the reviews of other critics and then mercilessly takes apart what they have said. She particularly has it in for the New York Times' Bosley Crowther, but she doesn't let others off the hook easily, either.

Kael is fun to read, even if you haven't seen the movie she is talking about. I've never seen "The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone", though I have seen "Suddenly Last Summer" -- both based on works of Tennessee Williams. But Kael's 1961 review of "Mrs. Stone" is a hilarious read. In one part, she says:

"The men who filmed 'The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone' seem to think the idea of an aging woman seeking companionship and love so daring and unusual that they fumble around with it almost as much as the doctor in the screen version of 'Suddenly, Last Summer', who couldn't seem to cope with the simple facts of Sebastian's homosexuality and kept saying, 'You DON'T mean THAT?'-- 'No, it CAN'T be THAT?' -- 'WHAT are you saying?' -- 'What do you MEAN?' I assumed the youngest child in the audience would get the point before he did. By trying so diligently to make Mrs. Stone so sympathetic and understandable the director and writer, Jose Quintero and Gavin Lambert, kill all interest in her. We could accept a woman buying love, but why make her haggle over it?"

Kael is hilarious, maddening, and most of all, thought-provoking. And if you love movies, she'll make you love them more.

I could flip through this book for hours!! I absolutely love it! Do you remember the first movie star Lucy sees in Hollywood? When Ethel and Fred's wedding anniversary is? Or how many appearances Ricky's mother makes during the run of the series?

This book is 144 pages long with 95 quizzes and games to test your knowledge of I Love Lucy. From crossword puzzles and multiple choice questions to filling in the blank, matching and word jumbles... this book has it all. It touches on everything! Identifying guests and neighbors, matching business names to phone numbers, matching dates to events, name that tune, character questions about the fab-four and so much more!

It also has a nice array of black and white photos that have been tastefully tinted to match the contents and color scheme of the book. While the photos are litely "hazed", the quality is excellent in comparison to the disappointing 50th Anniversary Book. There is also a complete episode log in the back for reference and answers to all the trivia questions and games. This is truly a great book if you want to brush up on your Lucy history or test your knowledge of I Love Lucy! This book is really a treat for every fan!
