Passion for CreationReview Date: 2002-10-17
We indeed are indebted to Matthew Fox for his integration and synthesis of the core of Eckharts thought. His is a rich, systematic presentation of Eckharts vision of the holiness and blessing of that which we call life.
His commentaries will provide many hours of delightful and challenging reflection for those whose path or journey leads them in the direction of intellection and erudite study. For those who are of the western contemplative or eastern meditative tradition, or anyone whose joy it is to spend time in deep prayer, will find in Eckharts thoughts, a path which is delightfully familiar, one that gives credence and expression to their everyday experiences, and will truly make one feel at home in their growth in spirituality
Spiritual food for starving soulsReview Date: 2000-03-13
The full text is presented in Fox's four path's of creation spirituality. Fox's commentary is deep, eloquent and helpful. Eckhart's writings on "letting go and letting be" take us very close to a meeting of the Occident and the Orient. Stranded on a desert island, this is the book I would choose.
Passion foro Creation: The Earth-honoring spirituality of Meister EckhardtReview Date: 2005-08-14

This is one of the most important spiritual books I have. Along with Bernadette Roberts' books, Eckhart is probably about as far as you can go towards a universal spirituality within the christian framework (i'm not a Christian by the way). It's not conservative stuff, no way, no repressive crap here - this is liberation, love and life. Did you know Eckhart was a large intellectual influence on Heidegger? "God is Being". His work is obviously pantheistic - God is the world, the world is an aspect of God. It's fully world loving and accepting. If you swapped "God" for "Dzogchen" then there would be a large cross-over with that Tibetan tradition. i.e being is present and presence is the creative/energetic aspect of the godhead.
If your liberal in your spirituality, if you love the earth like your mother, if you've got a brain and can think - then this book is for you. Thank-you to Matthew - great job! Eckhart lived 1260 to 1329 and more important and relevant now than ever.

Extraordinary, Yet ObviousReview Date: 2006-01-09
Solomon starts with the dominant paradigm in Western history of philosophical thought: Plato, especially the metaphor of the charioteer and two steeds (in the "Phaedrus"). According to Plato and nearly every thinker subsequently, "reason" and "emotion" are each of the two steeds, while the "soul" (i.e., mind) is the charioteer. The purpose of the charioteer is to extol reason and depreciate the emotions. And, for most of the intervening 2,500 years, most sages have depreciated the passions (i.e., the emotions) in favor of extolling reason (i.e., ratiocination). Even the early Stoics had an aversion to all things emotional. Boethius define humans as "a rational animal," a coinage that has remained unchanged for millennia. And as late as Freud, this dualism persists in the "ego" and the "id." But is that really how things are?
Solomon insists this whole tradition is bunk. His thesis is that reason and the emotions, while uniquely different aspects of the mind, are essentially and incontrovertibly united. I'm not sure that a conflationary claim can be defended against some of the insights of sociobiology and evolutionary psychology. But, he's not claiming these aren't different aspects; he's only claiming that the emotions and reason are intimately conjoined. The two are not separate and distinct, as Western tradition would have us believe, but that the two are integral to our very being. Indeed, it's their conjunction that gives "meaning to life," and without both of them together, our lives would be sterile and inchoate. And this thesis, I believe, he can defended.
When one looks back over one's life and recalls the most significant (and even the less significant) events, they all entail our emotions: Fear, hope, love, jealousy, revenge, lust, anger, etc. Nothing remotely "rational" alone stands out among the pinnacles of life. Yes, there is an occasional ratiocinative "eureka," but even then it's our pride in discovery that's controlling our pleasure, not reason alone. Indeed, all our interesting and engaging moments involve our emotions (or "passions"). Convincingly, I could not find a counter instance in my life to refute this claim. The "function" of reason is to prioritize, analyze, and utilize these emotions to our maximal benefit. It's only when we won't allow reason a mediating voice in our emotional experiences that things may go haywire, e.g., being consumed with so much rage that we self-destruct or kill others.
Again, this important insight about life has largely gone unnoticed. I was surprised that this book was written over 30 years ago, and still yet how so few people know of it (N.B. This second edition is much revised from the first.) Equally surprising is how accessible and insightful this simple thesis is, including Solomon's presentation of it, yet how out of touch so many of us are with its central thesis. Being a WASP, the subordination of all things emotional to reason was a "no-questions-asked" premise to life. How utterly wrong that premise and rule is. Consequently, I've discovered how truly enlivening the passions allow us to be, and fruitful when we allow reason to prioritize, analyze, and utilize them for maximal gain, and not spend useless hours wishing "things were otherwise." Highly recommended.
Philosophy you can actually useReview Date: 2008-02-10
The core message, though, is simply stated; if there is meaning in our lives, it is to be found in our emotions. Contrary to what philosophers, psychologists, religious authorities, and educators have said for centuries, emotions don't "happen" to us as though we were passive victims, instead we create them to give order, substance, depth, and involvement to our lives. Furthermore, it is possible to modify and improve our emotions to give ourselves a better quality of life. The methods for doing this are surprisingly simple, though not easy.

I also enjoyed the quotes from the writings and sayings of spiritual saints, mystics, etc, as well as exerpts from ancient writings like the Bible. This gave the book a more "global" and "enternal" feel, a feeling that no one is left out regardless of their religion. It does require an "open mind" if you are already "set" in one spiritual tradition. Read and enjoy! And God bless your spiritual journey.

Bob Graham - One of America's best Governors and U.S. SenatorsReview Date: 2007-04-14
On May 25, 1979, John Spenkelink became the first inmate to be executed in Florida following the resumption of capital punishment. The night before was an all night vigil in front of the Governor's Mansion. I was there. Bob - against the advise of his advisers - walked out the front door of the mansion to speak with us.
Subsequent to that I had many opportunities to speak with and to observe him up close. Reading this book though has - with the hindsight of history - helped me to better realize what a gem both Florida and the nation has in Bob Graham.
Bob, thank you.
And by the way, last night at the Florida Wine Festival - a fund-raiser for the Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science in Tallahassee - I won the dinner with you and three of my friends at the Governor's Club in Tallahassee. Looking forward!
And thank you S. V. Date for a most informative and well written book.
Next book for me to read is your newest book about the real (and scary) Jeb Bush.

Regarding Scharlette Holdman, who is cited in this book:
First a brief introduction: From 1986 - 1992 I was employed as an investigator at the Office of Capital Collateral Representative (CCR) in Tallahassee, Florida, where Scharlette Holdman worked as the supervisor of the investigators from October 1985 - March 1988.
I have known Scharlette since the mid-1970s. Her office, the Clearinghouse on Criminal Justice, was in the same wing of the Petroleum Building as my office at Common Cause in Florida, where I volunteered.
David von Drehle's excellent book "Among the Lowest of the Dead" provides the best history and analysis of the Florida death penalty, with Michael Mello's books a close second. Part of each of these books is about Scharlette Holdman. A bit of the negative aspects:
When Scharlette had essentially declared war upon CCR in 1987 and thereafter, some of us decided to investigate her background given some things that we had heard. Low and behold, Scharlette's claim of a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Hawaii and a Master's Degree from Memphis State (now University of Memphis) don't exist. A claimed undergraduate degree from Memphis State: I no longer recall if this was confirmed by the university.
We used Scharlette's Social Security number, her maiden name and her married name -- with all this information, both universities had no record of Scharlette having received any degrees from these institutions.
As I understand Scharlette, she needed the "degrees" to confer upon her "credentials" that she really never needed as she is indeed then and now a national expert on capital mitigation, litigation, etc. However Scharlette can be deceptive, as her lack of a PhD and Masters so demonstrates. Even today she claims to have the degrees as when she gives presentations regarding capital cases, she is identified as "Dr." A key word search of her name will bring up some of the presentations that she has made in the past several years with the title "Dr." preceding her name.
If she has received any honorary or other degrees since 1990, that would be new information for me. If so, please let me know: P.O. Box 38458, Tallahassee, FL 32315-8458.

Unusual book about an important subjectReview Date: 2000-05-09
What a pleasant surprise to open this book and find...an essay on Whitman. And one on D.H. Lawrence, and then lots on some people I had never heard of, but boy, they sounded intruiging.
This book is a scholar's dream, and David Guy approaches his subject, sex, and his setting for it, spirituality, with a scholar's diligence, a true researcher's obsession. Whitman, Lawrence, Alan Watts, these are all perhaps predictable choices for a book like this if you consider Guy's approach. But an essay on Marco Vassi, pulp pornographer, bathhouse aficianado and paramour of sex queen Annie Sprinkle? Well, as Guy says, if you want to really research the field, you look to the experts, people who have gone to the edge and come back to tell the tale.
Guy divides the book into three parts: a true confessional (this part might make you look at your normally sedate husband in a new light), a look at the trail-blazers of the sex-spirit link, and an introduction to some folks who are perhaps the unsung heroes of the healing arts world, alive and well and doing their thing (alas all on the West Coast).
You know, you could write an encyclopedia about the way sex is pushed down in our country, made into the stuff of sleazy porn shops, peep shows, strip clubs, and curb-side pickups. And you can easily find the how-to tantric sex manuals, and try to get your aura flowing as well as all those other body juices. Here is a book that serves as a bridge. Can you consider a former stripper and sexual escort as a spiritual healer? Well, yes. Guy does, and by the time we're finished with his book, we do too.
And while you're at it, pick up Leaves of Grass again. You'll read it in a whole new light.

With the help of his Special Lover, Michael explains in step by step detail the art of finding and enjoying every ounce of pleasure the g-spot climax invokes. This book is small enough that anyone man or woman can conceal in a jacket pocket, or purse to pull out in times when a little "reference" may be needed.
I would recommend The Holy G-rail to anyone trying to discover ways to spice up a relationship or are looking to heighten the sexual experience with their partner. Mr. Schuessler is a remarkable writer that really enforces the word, "hands on," the diagrams are also helpful. There are more books to come in the pleasuring series so be on the lookout for those, but for the time being go out and pick up your copy of The Holy G-rail today and start experiencing what you've been missing. 5 Hearts
