My absolute favorite cookbook

I bought this book years ago and cook from it whenever I want something earthy and real to eat. I own hundreds of cookbooks, mostly because I like reading them as well as cooking from them, but this is one that I use more than any other. It's hard for me, like another reviewer, to imagine how this book is so little known!

Absolutely wonderful!

One of the all-time best vegetarian cookbooks, this book is undeservedly little known. I read about it years ago, in an article which reported that it was a secret resource for food editors -- and was delighted to find that it was every bit as wonderful and I'd read. It contains a wide variety of delectable recipes I haven't seen elsewhere (and I own well over 2,000 cookbooks), each of which is preceded by a brief description of why it is so wonderful.

It is one thing to be successful. Quite another to be truly passionate about one's work. And yet another to have the ability to share that enthusiasm with others. In "A Passion for Winning" Aaron Cushman has done all three. He teaches by the example of his fine work and by his strong desire to have others follow in his footsteps. This book is great for anyone who desires a career in communications - or who needs a boost of confidence to jump-start a stalled career. (Review by Marion E. Gold - author of "Personal Publicity Planner: A Guide to Marketing YOU" and "TOP COPS: Profiles of Women in Command)

Thomas E. Kennedy has written yet another brilliant novel. Ostensibly , A Passion in the Desert is about a college creative writing teacher , Fred Twomey , a name perfectly suggestive of dichotomy , struggling with normal mezzo del cammin issues: marital fidelity , alcohol dependence , a senescent mother , an alienated teenage son. Kennedy's novel , a feast of language like all of his oeuvre , is , in fact , questioning the idea of paternity. He's a Joycean running with the concept proposed in the National Library scene by Stephen Dedalus viz., paternity might be legal fiction. Like Joyce , Kennedy is not afraid to take us through the muddy terrain of his protagonist's consciousness. And if there's a father , there must be a son. Kennedy gives us a '' nullius filius'' to correspond with a father deaf to a son's pater ,ait , and until the penultimate scene , a terrifying Ithaca , if you will , in a tour de force second person narrative. A Passion in the Desert is powerful storytelling. A veritable masterpiece.

After reading Kenney's Copenhagen Quartet, I couldn't imagine where he would go next to mine his seemingly endless supply of fascinating characters and stories. But "A Passion in the Desert," shows no fall-off from the brilliance of the Copenhagen Quartet. This book is, by turns, creepy, funny, amazingly insightful, and as personal as it gets within the ruminations of a character's mind, in this case, one Fred Twomey. And the great trick of Kennedy's writing is that no matter how surreal or fantastical his plots sometimes become, it always seems that they could happen to us. Everything remains plausible and personal. "A Passion in the Desert" is to be savored. Read the newspaper on the train or on a bus, but save Kennedy's latest for your armchair, with a chilled martini on a table next to you. And then begin reading and you'll know you are in the hands of legitimate master storyteller. Kennedy's work is as good as it gets.

Excedllent Rosary prayer resource

This is an excellent little resource for praying the rosary. It is in the "scriptural rosary" format...a verse for each Hail Mary. This little book is very helpful to prayer. I highly recommend this book along with the other Rosary books by Larry London.

Interesting marriage of Passion to Rosary

The Passion Novena: A Scriptural Rosary is an interesting variation on the Rosary. For each of nine days, five mysteries are provided; these sets of five are: the preparatory mysteries, the manifestation mysteries, the knowing mysteries, the loving mysteries, the serving mysteries, the Last Supper mysteries, the Passion mysteries, the perseverence mysteries, and the resurrection mysteries. Before each Hail Mary, there is a Biblical verse. Appropriate instructions on how to day the Rosary are provided. Every Catholic should know the "plain vanilla" Rosary but everyone must find the form of the Rosary (if any) which is most appropriate to their prayer life. This could be an excellent choice.

The Passion of Dellie O'Barr is a story full of feelings and new experiences. The gentelness of the main character and the radical choices she makes keep the interest in the story run high. Cindy Bonner is a winner!! I love all of her books and think she should get the recognition she deserves. It is a pleasure to read Bonner's novels, the subject is well researched and written in an easy to understand language, yet colorful. The manner in which Bonner describes the town, all it's residents and the way of life is so well written, it paints a clear picture in mind. I could not put the book down, it was a great reading, and time well spent. I want to recommend this novel to everybody, you will not regret you opened Cindy Bonner's "The Passion of Dellie O'Barr".

This book is just as incredible as her first, "Lily". It's a wonder to me that Cindy Bonner doesn't get more recognition for her work. Her novels are honest, with real, human characters. This book, as well as her two previous, is a book I will never forget!

What fiction should be

If you haven't read Goldstein-Love's debut novel yet (hardcover entitled Overture)--well, you must. It is so rare these days to find fiction with such wisdom, such generosity of spirit, such empathy; in short a novel that so skillfully accomplishes what a novel is meant to do: enable readers to get inside a mind apart from their own. A novel like The Passion of Tasha Darsky is more illuminating than most nonfiction books you can read; in the hands of so adept and warmhearted an interpreter of human nature as Goldstein-Love, you'll come away with a new lucidity to bring to all your day-to-day interactions.

"the Big One...."
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-05
In this beautiful novel, world-famous concert violinist Tasha Darsky thinks she is nothing because she doesn't write music like her lover or her daughter. She views the playing of other people's compositions as a utility, not an act of creation. Yet, she imbues the notes she plays with such unkempt effusion and vibrant passion that the pieces become new under her dazzling bowing. Being a sensation is, however, actually the acidic fruit of Tasha's renunciation of the love of her life and her promise as a composer, so a reckoning and an adjustment are inevitable....

THE PASSION OF TASHA DARSKY (entitled OVERTURE in its hardcover edition) succeeds on so many levels: As a study of the artistic temperament. As a love story fraught with human frailty. As an exploration of modern musical theory. As transporting translation of musical emotions into words. And as a generational spiral in which Tasha, her mother (to a lesser degree), and her daughter each grapple with their talents, their loved ones, and their insecurities. Tasha and Alexandra struggle with typical mother/daughter stresses but also with their fishbowl performing life and the men they encounter. Alex calls Tasha "the Big One" -- the one who has already accomplished everything -- but Tasha knows her daughter's talents and tells her, "...I couldn't do what you do; write music like that...."

THE PASSION OF TASHA DARSKY is a penetrating, mature reflection on one fragile musical life at its center and the family, friends, mentors, and lovers who help tune it. At one point, an unforgettable character blithely and a bit pompously declares, "I believe beauty is the only thing that has a right to be anywhere it cares to be." Well, that sentiment ought to apply to this novel. It deserves to be...everywhere. Very highly recommended, especially to music lovers.

extremely thought provoking read

Review Date: 2005-06-09
This is a strange, quick, and surprisingly powerful book. It was endorsed by a religious social critic and a woman known for her photographs of porn scenes, which is not a combination you usually find. The story is about a shabby porn star (Terri Heart) who's also a kind of savior of losers and lost souls. She's certainly not a saint , but in her own generous (maybe a bit too generous), open-hearted way she does help the walking wounded of this world. The story is told by a brainy but skeptical or maybe even cynical older man, Michael Bruno, who is saved even as he tries to save Terri Heart. This very fast, readable book unapologetically shows how to make a pornographic movie and at the same time how to love, how to put together a family, how live a better life. Five stars.

A passionate story and a great read!

The Passion of Terri Heart is a truly crazy modern saint's life that moves along so fast you're grateful when a huge blizzard finally forces Terri, the central character, to spend three quiet days and nights with Michael Bruno, the skeptical teller of her story. And it's a good, readable story. Terri is an actress in porn films but also a genuinely loving person who wants to redeem the world, or at least some of the lost souls around her. The novel has explicit scenes about the making of x-rated films as well as scenes of genuine passion and intellectual discussion, so its not meant for prudes or dummies.

Mirabelli has created amazing characters, and his writing is so sensuous and visual that it's like watching a movie. Five stars for this one.
