No Wonder Such A Wonderful BookReview Date: 2003-03-19
As it is written, from Paul in I Corithians, chapter 15.
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures....
From the Cross comes Words spoken in the Lord's final acts. The words come from Luke, chapter 23. He spoke to all of us through time. He saw each one of us. From His suffering, His pain and His shame to our sickness, our sin and our doubt. His cry, "Father, forgive them." [Luke 23:34] was enough. To all the Bernhard Goetz's who lash out in anger for injustice. There is justice. To the criminal who died on the Cross next to the Savior there is hope. For those finding a way out there is pardon and forgiveness. To the solider or missionary who leaves loved ones behind. For Love is built NOT on passion and romance but on mission and sacrifice. That eternity is closer than any Good-bye, but in reality 'see you soon.' To all the Judith Bucknell's who cry in loneliness. He reached out from the Cross to your lonely heart. It was Jesus in his hour of abandonment, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' [Matthew 27:46]. When no one else loves you. He is going to love you. He always has. He was fulfilling prophecy. When you're tired and thrist. He knows that, too. God became flesh and dwelt with us to know everything we have ever done with compassion He carried it with Him to the Cross.
The witnesses who were there and saw the miracle of salvation. Even those who ran away. There was a great price paid. He sacrified His life. We all know what had happened that day. The message is in our tears. No education, maturity or religion can separate us from His passion. From the Cross' wisdom comes the open arms of undying Love and a place to come home to. Only that wisdom lies NOT as men sees it, but in Faith in the Power of God. The evidence in an empty tomb. So what does really matter to you? I'd say a living God in the flesh, making the most important decision in your life, to spread the news 'in an information age, NOT regeneration.' In Jesus' words, 'Will you tell them?' 'Will you tell them I came back and that I'm coming back again.' Will you?
NOTE: Contains a Study Guide at the end for each chapter for further study plus added notes. To Max, May God continually Bless you as you Bless us with your gift. In the Love of Jesus.

What Really Matters?Review Date: 2003-02-27
As "pain pervades the dusty planet," we can at times wonder how our suffering can better us as human beings. We feel alone roaming down here while God seems far above, safe in his heavenly paradise.
This is where Jesus Christ appears. In his suffering, we can see God at his most human. When the consistency of life IS inconsistency, there is someone who understands.
Jesus died for people instead of taking revenge. He didn't retaliate even when he was facing death. He takes our sin on his shoulders and becomes the "death slayer."
Max Lucado is really writing to people who have broken hearts and who can find a lonely person simply by looking in the mirror. The land of promise is for those who endure the pain and suffering and are reborn.
I loved the story he tells about the puppy and how he explains guilt and forgiveness. He brings a human element to spiritual concepts. He also explains how we can't get rid of guilt ourselves, we really do need a savior.
A beautiful look at Christ, the Cross and why we need God.

Just incase you are still reading this; The story starts out, interestingly enough, with a bedroom scene. Only as that scene ends do you find out that it is a retelling. The main charactor, Sadie, is a psychologist with a quadrapalegic husband who has struck up an unlikely and strange relationship with a man named Joe. You only know Joe through his stories of illicit affairs, one night stands, and hot encounters which he eloquently relays to our main charactor. These two people meet once a month. The rest of the time is filled in with Sadie's life as the wife, lover, and care giver for her quadrapalegic husband.
There were several conversations that took place in this book that i was able to relate to: Sadie's converstation whith her mother about how she (Sadie) needs to talk to her sister and help take care of her because Sadie is not the daughter she needed to worry about but the sister needed looking after. Sadie's converstaion with her sister where she explains her life and all of its unpleasantries and her sister finaly gets an idea of what Sadie has had to go through with her injured husband. The heart wrenching arguments with her husband that leave Sadie broken. (well titled book, by the way)
The greatest thing about this book was it was not about sex. It was about a woman who had a real life, who had real temptations, and who had real feelings. I like finishing reading something and feeling good about my life not wishing I had that charactors "happily ever after" life. This is not a "happily ever after" book. But it is one that is worth reading.

It is an important part of a writer's personal collection. I would recommend it to anyone looking to get published along with Michael Larsen's "How to Get a Literary Agent", and "Give em What they Want" by Blythe Cameson for good examples of query letters.
These three books are a good start for the fiction writer.

Their step-by-step approach, quotes from other writers, agents, publishers, editors, booksellers, and librarians are very helpful. I don't know of any other book out there that packs in so many facts, useful tools, and poignant quotes from those in the industry who have the power to help you take your book to the top of the best-seller list or leave you out in the cold with an unedited, unappreciated manuscript destined for a drawer. All that, and it's funny besides. What more could you ask for (other than a ticket to one of their workshops which I have no doubt are a blast)?
I'm very glad I resisted the temptation to check this out of the library. It's too valuable a reference book not to have next to me as I work.

A Delight Before ChristmasReview Date: 2008-02-12
To complicate things more, Berlin's parents decide to spend Christmas with her at her house - the very same house that she has been bragging about for the past year. With the arrival of her parents just around the corner, Berlin is in dire need of a painter to finish making the inside of her home beautiful. And, wouldn't you know it - the only available person who fits in her budget is Reggie. Now, Berlin is stuck between a rock and a hard place because it is becoming very challenging to stick to her plans of landing a rich doctor for a husband while trying to ignore her growing desire to be intimate with Reggie.
You know the old saying of "never judge a book by its cover because you might not know what you find inside"? Well, in A Delight Before Christmas, Berlin Dupree is about to find out the truth behind that statement. In the beginning, because of her past hardship, I truly understood Berlin's actions and totally agreed with some of them. I can relate to wanting to make the best of your life and to have goals to strive towards. However, trying to uphold her beliefs proves to be a very difficult task for Berlin, especially when her mind says one thing and her body demands another.
Readers, you are in for a deliciously sweet, spicy treat with A Delight Before Christmas, from start to finish it is scorching hot. Whew! The continuous, explosive sexual play is highly erotic, extremely passionate, and `oh-so lustful' beyond my wildest dreams. Berlin and Reggie's attraction immediately leaps off the page at you; how either can resist as long as they do is really an amazing act. I found myself deeply immersed within A Delight Before Christmas so much so that I simply couldn't put it down. I found myself saying "just one more page" and before I knew it A Delight Before Christmas was drawing to a conclusion. A Delight Before Christmas is my first time taking great pleasures in the writings of Angie Daniels and I must say that she will definitely be added to my must read author list.

Emily and Chris, I loved them together. Even before they started their relationship they had this touchy feely friendship. I loved how he was willing to give up everything to have her. I even loved it when they fought.
The family aspect of the story made it real, especially Emily's overprotective father. Everyone but him realised that something was going on with the couple.

Did we read the same book? This isn't lovemaking, it's rape!Review Date: 2006-07-19
When the hero (who up to this point despises the heroine) has sex with the heroine WHILE SHE'S DRUGGED UP ON LAUDANUM and passed out, not really aware of what's going on! His reasoning? She's dressed in pants and must be a prostitute, therefore he's not doing anything wrong. He's got a right to use her because she's a whore! I was so disgusted that this book flew across my room.
Yeah, yeah, I know such things were just par for the course in many 80's romances, but this is sick, sick, sick! Hello, people! Sex without a woman's consent is called RAPE!!!! That's why they call it the "date-rape" drug, and not the "seduction" drug! I can't believe people actually find this romantic.
This disgusting "love" (RAPE!) scene appears just 50 pages into the book. So it's not like they hero and heroine have had any time to fall in love with one another. In fact, they hate each other. I don't like such early sex even between consenting adults, let alone a rape scene (which is NEVER acceptable!) Skip this book!

Thought-Provoking, IntrospectiveReview Date: 2006-02-06
Bill Jensen is a self-described simpleton dedicated to fighting corporate stupidity. Living a simple life in this complicated world is challenge enough, but this brave soul has committed to an even deeper mission. Cutting through the stupidity, bureaucracy, and politics, you'll discover that corporations are comprised of people. People. Ordinary, heart's-in-the-right-place people. These people have feelings, experiences, perspectives, and stories to tell. They have vital messages to pass on to others.
Jensen has collected those messages. Thousands of them, in the form of letters. Written documentaries from the depths of consciousness of the writers. Some are short, some long. Some deep and profound, others relatively shallow. Each has a message. This book is a collection of samples of the letters Jensen has collected. They are assembled on these pages, not to be read necessarily from cover to cover, but to be selected and absorbed at will. Picking and choosing letters, as the author suggests, is not easy-you'll probably read most of them anyway.
The letters are organized into chapters representing what Jensen calls his Five Discoveries: Finding Yourself, Finding the Lessons to be Learned and the Questions to be Asked, Finding the Choices that Really Matter, Finding the Courage to Choose, and Finding Joy, Serenity, and Fulfillment.
The book concludes with a valuable chapter on getting started with your own understandings and choices. This publication is a learning, a sharing, an inspiration to look more carefully at your own life to see what really matters. Curl up with this book next week-end.

get this for sure if u want to feel collected and want to reconcile yourself. I know i pick this up every time i feel lost and hopeless; it doesn't care if u made it or not as far as material is concerned. I had recommended this book to 3 people whom are very well off and yet they too have felt lost in their "supposedly" full lives. I gave this as a gift to another who just started their first job out of college. ItS fantastic stories that move u :)
Personal Reflection, Universal WisdomReview Date: 2005-08-04
WHAT IS YOUR LIFE'S WORK examines what truly matters from a distinctly human perspective. It does so not by dry, formal statements of principles (e.g., the 7-steps, the 10-tenets, the 9-objectives, the 431 value-added theorems . . . you get the picture). Rather, the author offers the wisdom of numerous individuals, precious metals refined in the furnace of everyday existence. The letters and journal entries, selected by Bill Jensen from countless thousands, answer the questions of what really matters in life and how one awakens (or reawakens) the passion in one's soul. The lessons are personal, poignant, and powerful; they are also as unique as are the individual personalities.
In lives of depth and meaning, certain themes emerge: self-respect, integrity, balance, the importance of family, faith, passion, selflessness, and compassion (to name just a few). Mr. Jensen's selections, for the most part, emphasize the transcendence of the individual toward a greater purpose than the accumulation of possessions, or the aggregate of mere activities and accomplishments.
There are two individuals, whose legacies to their children are sadly that of egotistical arrogance and strident selfishness. The reader will quickly recognize these shallow individuals - their stories too are most valuable.
Although a scant 200+ pages, WHAT IS YOUR LIFE'S WORK packs a tremendous wallop, a wonderful wake-up call to those who have languished in a low-level comfort zone, or to those who aspire to a higher place. It is a wonderful series of discoveries to those seeking a life of fulfillment and meaning in those areas that truly matter.
Soulful Letters of Balancing Work & LifeReview Date: 2005-07-10
In an age when it's been said that the art of letter writing is dead, this book dares to raise the subject of we can best find a balance between work and the rest of our life. The intense passion conveyed in most of the letters helps bring this subject to life in a way that is sure to help anyone rekindle their own inner fire, and regain a sense of what it is we're all working for that really matters.

A Roadmap for the Journey into Emotional IntelligenceReview Date: 2005-12-31
The book is filled with inspiring and motivational quotations that set the pace for each chapter. I especially liked the succinct chapter summaries.
Each chapter includes thought provoking exercises in the form of a Personal Emotional Intelligence Journal, Self Motivational Assessments, and Inter Personal Assignments. These exercises are stimulating and an important part in the process of applying the principles of self actualization and becoming an authentic individual.
The book is a guidebook for discovering self assessment techniques, understanding in relationships, and new skills in managing others. The work is scholarly, well researched, and well documented, with extensive appendices. The bibliography provides a complete and helpful resource list.
I highly recommend this book for the professional business leader, or the lay person interested in strengthening and broadening of social, family, and parental relationships. The book can be used as a classroom text, a small group study guide, or for individuals seeking encouragement.
The layout of the book is unique. The clean cover design and appealing page and chapter set up make this an excellent gift for any serious motivational student.
