Mark Albion explains a very contemporary balancing act: how to run a business based on values and still make a profit. Companies ranging from Starbucks and Ben & Jerry's to small bakeries and toy makers have prospered while supporting the social concerns of their founders and employees. Building such values-based businesses is not easy. They face the same profit-and-loss problems as other small companies, plus they take on an additional layer of social issues. Albion tells his personal story, buttressed by corporate examples and interviews with 75 owners of values-based businesses. getAbstract suggests this book full of practical advice to anyone who is willing to sign up for the challenge of running a values-based business.

Really good book on building a values-based business.

This book gives good insight on how to build a successful business that goes beyond just profitability. Mark Albion describes how to strike a balance between personal values, profitability, corporate social responsibility, and environmental contributions by what he calls the "five values-based leadership practices". I do recommend this book to those interested in learning the characteristics of a values-based business leader.

Poor. It consists of fillers and redundancies that could hypothetically be widdled down to a small pamphlet. Albion throws around trendy managerial phrases throughout, but fails to inform the reader as to how to seriously apply them.

Is it ever a wonder that Max Lucado is truly anointed by the Lord to touch your heart? In 'No Wonder They Call Him the Savior: Chronicles from the Cross', Lucado gets to the heart of the matter. Even to his Irish friend, Ian who had been there and done that. Tired of religion and theology. When everything else seems empty. What really mattered? He wanted treasure. The answer: The Cross.

As it is written, from Paul in I Corithians, chapter 15.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures....

From the Cross comes Words spoken in the Lord's final acts. The words come from Luke, chapter 23. He spoke to all of us through time. He saw each one of us. From His suffering, His pain and His shame to our sickness, our sin and our doubt. His cry, "Father, forgive them." [Luke 23:34] was enough. To all the Bernhard Goetz's who lash out in anger for injustice. There is justice. To the criminal who died on the Cross next to the Savior there is hope. For those finding a way out there is pardon and forgiveness. To the solider or missionary who leaves loved ones behind. For Love is built NOT on passion and romance but on mission and sacrifice. That eternity is closer than any Good-bye, but in reality 'see you soon.' To all the Judith Bucknell's who cry in loneliness. He reached out from the Cross to your lonely heart. It was Jesus in his hour of abandonment, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' [Matthew 27:46]. When no one else loves you. He is going to love you. He always has. He was fulfilling prophecy. When you're tired and thrist. He knows that, too. God became flesh and dwelt with us to know everything we have ever done with compassion He carried it with Him to the Cross.

The witnesses who were there and saw the miracle of salvation. Even those who ran away. There was a great price paid. He sacrified His life. We all know what had happened that day. The message is in our tears. No education, maturity or religion can separate us from His passion. From the Cross' wisdom comes the open arms of undying Love and a place to come home to. Only that wisdom lies NOT as men sees it, but in Faith in the Power of God. The evidence in an empty tomb. So what does really matter to you? I'd say a living God in the flesh, making the most important decision in your life, to spread the news 'in an information age, NOT regeneration.' In Jesus' words, 'Will you tell them?' 'Will you tell them I came back and that I'm coming back again.' Will you?

NOTE: Contains a Study Guide at the end for each chapter for further study plus added notes. To Max, May God continually Bless you as you Bless us with your gift. In the Love of Jesus.

"Any serious study of the Christian claim is, at its essence, a study of the cross. To accept or reject Christ without careful examination of Calvary is like deciding on a car without looking at the engine."

As "pain pervades the dusty planet," we can at times wonder how our suffering can better us as human beings. We feel alone roaming down here while God seems far above, safe in his heavenly paradise.

This is where Jesus Christ appears. In his suffering, we can see God at his most human. When the consistency of life IS inconsistency, there is someone who understands.

Jesus died for people instead of taking revenge. He didn't retaliate even when he was facing death. He takes our sin on his shoulders and becomes the "death slayer."

Max Lucado is really writing to people who have broken hearts and who can find a lonely person simply by looking in the mirror. The land of promise is for those who endure the pain and suffering and are reborn.

I loved the story he tells about the puppy and how he explains guilt and forgiveness. He brings a human element to spiritual concepts. He also explains how we can't get rid of guilt ourselves, we really do need a savior.

A beautiful look at Christ, the Cross and why we need God.

Max Lucado has done a marvelous thing by blessing humanity with his portrayal of the Cross of Jesus Christ. In his own unique style of writing, the author takes you on a vivid journey of discovery as you see the Cross, and the characters who "surround" it, from a new light. Max Lucado has such a powerful ability to express himself in words. Tears filled my eyes as I was touched, transformed, and impacted by my Saviour through this book. You will be truly blessed!

I was very supprised by this book. I did not really expect a whole lot, to tell you the truth. I started it at about 7 in the evening and did not put it down until i finished it at 4 in the morning. I cried, a lot. It might have been the time (4am can be an emotional time apparently) but i was so suprised at how well Megan Hart was able to portray emotion. This is really one of the most touching and real stories i have read. I would have loved the book even without the graphic scenes. There was a real depth to the main charactor. I was totaly bowled over by this unexpected new favorite.

Just incase you are still reading this; The story starts out, interestingly enough, with a bedroom scene. Only as that scene ends do you find out that it is a retelling. The main charactor, Sadie, is a psychologist with a quadrapalegic husband who has struck up an unlikely and strange relationship with a man named Joe. You only know Joe through his stories of illicit affairs, one night stands, and hot encounters which he eloquently relays to our main charactor. These two people meet once a month. The rest of the time is filled in with Sadie's life as the wife, lover, and care giver for her quadrapalegic husband.

There were several conversations that took place in this book that i was able to relate to: Sadie's converstation whith her mother about how she (Sadie) needs to talk to her sister and help take care of her because Sadie is not the daughter she needed to worry about but the sister needed looking after. Sadie's converstaion with her sister where she explains her life and all of its unpleasantries and her sister finaly gets an idea of what Sadie has had to go through with her injured husband. The heart wrenching arguments with her husband that leave Sadie broken. (well titled book, by the way)

The greatest thing about this book was it was not about sex. It was about a woman who had a real life, who had real temptations, and who had real feelings. I like finishing reading something and feeling good about my life not wishing I had that charactors "happily ever after" life. This is not a "happily ever after" book. But it is one that is worth reading.

There aren't enough stars to give this book.

An extremely well written, unusual, hot book. It had more of a mainstream quality than many romances in that it didn't follow the usual romance novel formula. I do like the usual formula and at times wished this book did follow it because sometimes the realism detracted from the fantasy. But, that said, I was riveted throughout. I thought the sex (and there's plenty of it to satisfy readers of hot romance like me) was very well done and varied. And the story was touching. I know that's cliche, but this one really was. It was very, very believable. Thank you, Megan Hart, for writing this wonderful book!

This book is awesome. It helped me to write my first book, "Lipstick Ghetto: The Girls' Guide to Escaping The 9-to-5 Rat Race." "Putting Your Passion Into Print" is an excellent resource for all writers (new and experienced). From getting the right idea for your book to selling it to publishers...this book is an invaluable tool. I have so many pages marked with "sticky notes"! When would-be authors ask me for advice I send them to the store to buy Putting Your Passion Into Print! Bravo to the authors for a comprehsive guide to writing, publishing and marketing your book. Also helpful was "Write the Perfect Book Proposal" by Jeff Herman. These two books should be on every aspiring author's shelf. Scratch that. They should be on your bedside table....and in your hands.

This book is full of info for almost every aspect of publishing and finding a literary agent. It covers more subjects than any other book I read, but it could go into a little more detail with some of them.If the chapter on proposals and query letters had more examples, it would have been a little more helpful. Their was a lot of information on marketing and publicity. I'm overall very pleased with this book, I learned enough in it to consider it a good purchase, and it will be another one I refer to often.

It is an important part of a writer's personal collection. I would recommend it to anyone looking to get published along with Michael Larsen's "How to Get a Literary Agent", and "Give em What they Want" by Blythe Cameson for good examples of query letters.

These three books are a good start for the fiction writer.

I absolutely loved this book! I've been researching many aspects of publishing, but this well-written, humorous book put the disparate elements of: writing query letters and book proposals, getting a manuscript in front of an agent, accepted by a publisher, and into the hands of readers, all in one place. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in a close, insider's look at the publishing world and how you can take your great idea and passion from the notes on a page to the book-signing stage successfully.
Their step-by-step approach, quotes from other writers, agents, publishers, editors, booksellers, and librarians are very helpful. I don't know of any other book out there that packs in so many facts, useful tools, and poignant quotes from those in the industry who have the power to help you take your book to the top of the best-seller list or leave you out in the cold with an unedited, unappreciated manuscript destined for a drawer. All that, and it's funny besides. What more could you ask for (other than a ticket to one of their workshops which I have no doubt are a blast)?
I'm very glad I resisted the temptation to check this out of the library. It's too valuable a reference book not to have next to me as I work.

After growing up poor, Berlin Dupree vowed to never return to her urban roots. So, when she became an adult, she created a `to do' list of how she would gain and maintain the perfect way of living the good life. All that's left on her list is to find a good doctor for her husband and to start a family. Berlin has set her sights on the clinic's pediatric doctor, Cameron Clark. Her plans did not include Reginald Hodges, the very sexy hood-type-brotha who is painting the medical clinic offices. However, ever since Berlin mistakenly planted Santa Reggie with a mega-hot, tongue-down-your-throat kiss at the office Christmas party under the mistletoe; she couldn't stop thinking about him.

To complicate things more, Berlin's parents decide to spend Christmas with her at her house - the very same house that she has been bragging about for the past year. With the arrival of her parents just around the corner, Berlin is in dire need of a painter to finish making the inside of her home beautiful. And, wouldn't you know it - the only available person who fits in her budget is Reggie. Now, Berlin is stuck between a rock and a hard place because it is becoming very challenging to stick to her plans of landing a rich doctor for a husband while trying to ignore her growing desire to be intimate with Reggie.

You know the old saying of "never judge a book by its cover because you might not know what you find inside"? Well, in A Delight Before Christmas, Berlin Dupree is about to find out the truth behind that statement. In the beginning, because of her past hardship, I truly understood Berlin's actions and totally agreed with some of them. I can relate to wanting to make the best of your life and to have goals to strive towards. However, trying to uphold her beliefs proves to be a very difficult task for Berlin, especially when her mind says one thing and her body demands another.

Readers, you are in for a deliciously sweet, spicy treat with A Delight Before Christmas, from start to finish it is scorching hot. Whew! The continuous, explosive sexual play is highly erotic, extremely passionate, and `oh-so lustful' beyond my wildest dreams. Berlin and Reggie's attraction immediately leaps off the page at you; how either can resist as long as they do is really an amazing act. I found myself deeply immersed within A Delight Before Christmas so much so that I simply couldn't put it down. I found myself saying "just one more page" and before I knew it A Delight Before Christmas was drawing to a conclusion. A Delight Before Christmas is my first time taking great pleasures in the writings of Angie Daniels and I must say that she will definitely be added to my must read author list.

Viki Lareau's book Marketing and Selling Your Handmade Jewelry is a well-written, experience-based guide for the novice. With the exception of a couple of small number of typos or misspellings, the book is a delight. I found that I wanted to read it straight through and almost succeeded in doing so before being interrupted. The photos complement the text, and it helps that the reader comes to like the person writing the book (at least I did).

Concisely written, clearly categorized, useful information. I only wish I had read it seven years ago when I first started selling my jewelry, as some of the lessons I have learned a much harder way!

Enjoyable continuation to the Hideaway series. Despite being in love since adolescence it was not smooth sailing for Chris and Emily. I enjoyed the humorous moments with their Dads almost coming to blows about their relationship- with Joshua being a little too overprotective- you would think a 30 year old woman could make her own decisions about who she sleeps with without Daddy being upset about it. Good to catch up on the other family members. And I look forward to reading Michael, Tylers and Gabriels stories. However so far the best in the series are the ones about the first generation.

read the whole series.. you'll love it.... or any book by itself.

Emily touched my heart because she was waited all those years for Chris........If only everyone could have the love that these two shared. Emily and Chris, I loved them together. Even before they started their relationship they had this touchy feely friendship. I loved how he was willing to give up everything to have her. I even loved it when they fought.

The family aspect of the story made it real, especially Emily's overprotective father. Everyone but him realised that something was going on with the couple.

I loved this book. It really made you think about "could this actually happen?" I love the bits of history, the attitudes of people in different times, the extraordinary amount of research that Mrs. O'Day must have put into this. She is just an awesome story teller.

A keeper for sure!!!

I read this book many years ago and fell in love with it. I just found it again and re-read it- yep, still love it! I don't really agree with the last review about the "rape" scene. It's a fictional book and I took it as that- fictional. It was an important part of the plot, although it may be disturbing to some, you soon forget about it as Constance weaves her magical spell. I felt transported back in time with Brianne and almost wished it were true. I hated that the book ended, and the ending was fabulous! I wish there was a part two and I could continue reading about Brianne and Ryan's life. Not to be, but at least I have this copy and I can pull it out every few years and get swept back in time once again and try to pretend I don't know how the story will turn out. I love this book and highly recommend it to all those who enjoy an easy read that will make your heart flutter and your cheeks flush!

and I still think about the storyline quite frequently. Not only did I love the characters and how they developed throughout the book, but I'm very much into the New Orleans: it's such a great setting for a romance to take place. "Timeless Passion" also includes many dualisms, like North vs. South, being a modern career woman vs. being an oppressed wallflower wife, etc. For me, the time travel genre is a great expression of clashing ideals and interests, which can be both hilarious and shocking depending on what's encountered. From a person that reads just about anything she picks up, I'm still a very harsh critic. This book, along quite a few classics, I swear it makes me want to be a writer, too. On a side note, it was clever of O'Day-Flannery to make Brianne so short in comparison to Ryan. We need more characters that aren't portrayed as supermodels so that more people can enjoy these types of novels.

Did we read the same book? This isn't lovemaking, it's rape!

Everybody raved about how good this book was, so I decided to give it a try. I didn't get very far.

When the hero (who up to this point despises the heroine) has sex with the heroine WHILE SHE'S DRUGGED UP ON LAUDANUM and passed out, not really aware of what's going on! His reasoning? She's dressed in pants and must be a prostitute, therefore he's not doing anything wrong. He's got a right to use her because she's a whore! I was so disgusted that this book flew across my room.

Yeah, yeah, I know such things were just par for the course in many 80's romances, but this is sick, sick, sick! Hello, people! Sex without a woman's consent is called RAPE!!!! That's why they call it the "date-rape" drug, and not the "seduction" drug! I can't believe people actually find this romantic.

This disgusting "love" (RAPE!) scene appears just 50 pages into the book. So it's not like they hero and heroine have had any time to fall in love with one another. In fact, they hate each other. I don't like such early sex even between consenting adults, let alone a rape scene (which is NEVER acceptable!) Skip this book!

What Is Your Life's Work? by Bill Jensen is more than just advice: it gathers life stories and case histories of those who succeeded in identifying what really matters, using the letters and work diaries of others to mirror reader struggles. While the overall message lies in identifying life purpose, all the advice in What Is Your Life's Work can be directed to business solutions and issues as well as more general life concerns over risk, worth, and achievement. An excellent, cathartic inspiration for change.

What's important about work? What's important about life? What would you tell your kids if you wrote them a letter about what's important, what work and life mean to you?

Bill Jensen is a self-described simpleton dedicated to fighting corporate stupidity. Living a simple life in this complicated world is challenge enough, but this brave soul has committed to an even deeper mission. Cutting through the stupidity, bureaucracy, and politics, you'll discover that corporations are comprised of people. People. Ordinary, heart's-in-the-right-place people. These people have feelings, experiences, perspectives, and stories to tell. They have vital messages to pass on to others.

Jensen has collected those messages. Thousands of them, in the form of letters. Written documentaries from the depths of consciousness of the writers. Some are short, some long. Some deep and profound, others relatively shallow. Each has a message. This book is a collection of samples of the letters Jensen has collected. They are assembled on these pages, not to be read necessarily from cover to cover, but to be selected and absorbed at will. Picking and choosing letters, as the author suggests, is not easy-you'll probably read most of them anyway.

The letters are organized into chapters representing what Jensen calls his Five Discoveries: Finding Yourself, Finding the Lessons to be Learned and the Questions to be Asked, Finding the Choices that Really Matter, Finding the Courage to Choose, and Finding Joy, Serenity, and Fulfillment.

The book concludes with a valuable chapter on getting started with your own understandings and choices. This publication is a learning, a sharing, an inspiration to look more carefully at your own life to see what really matters. Curl up with this book next week-end.

This is not one of those how to feel better about one's self or situation. Nor its instructions on to be better in life. The subject matter is like a brilliant snap shot of all sorts of people from various backgrounds and professions and levels of society. They share some of the most amazing fears, tears, and most of all lesson learned within their experience. there is no good and bad...its just a collection of REAL stories written by real people like u and me!!

get this for sure if u want to feel collected and want to reconcile yourself. I know i pick this up every time i feel lost and hopeless; it doesn't care if u made it or not as far as material is concerned. I had recommended this book to 3 people whom are very well off and yet they too have felt lost in their "supposedly" full lives. I gave this as a gift to another who just started their first job out of college. ItS fantastic stories that move u :)

How often do we define ourselves by our work? How often do we equate who we are in life with our job title: assistant director, associate vice deputy, CEO, chairman, stay-at-home mom, etc.? So many people focus so tightly upon their job description as their identity that they ultimately lose sight of their true self.

WHAT IS YOUR LIFE'S WORK examines what truly matters from a distinctly human perspective. It does so not by dry, formal statements of principles (e.g., the 7-steps, the 10-tenets, the 9-objectives, the 431 value-added theorems . . . you get the picture). Rather, the author offers the wisdom of numerous individuals, precious metals refined in the furnace of everyday existence. The letters and journal entries, selected by Bill Jensen from countless thousands, answer the questions of what really matters in life and how one awakens (or reawakens) the passion in one's soul. The lessons are personal, poignant, and powerful; they are also as unique as are the individual personalities.

In lives of depth and meaning, certain themes emerge: self-respect, integrity, balance, the importance of family, faith, passion, selflessness, and compassion (to name just a few). Mr. Jensen's selections, for the most part, emphasize the transcendence of the individual toward a greater purpose than the accumulation of possessions, or the aggregate of mere activities and accomplishments.

There are two individuals, whose legacies to their children are sadly that of egotistical arrogance and strident selfishness. The reader will quickly recognize these shallow individuals - their stories too are most valuable.

Although a scant 200+ pages, WHAT IS YOUR LIFE'S WORK packs a tremendous wallop, a wonderful wake-up call to those who have languished in a low-level comfort zone, or to those who aspire to a higher place. It is a wonderful series of discoveries to those seeking a life of fulfillment and meaning in those areas that truly matter.

If you've ever wished you had a parent or mentor who would have shared with you what it is that matters most in life, because you've noticed that people who get such mentoring seem to have some kind of natural edge in the world... you're in luck. Bill Jensen's book WHAT IS YOUR LIFE'S WORK contains some of the most powerfully moving written exchanges between people that you are likely ever to find, and these gems of real life stories will set you on fire with their honesty and love. Every counselor, life coach, parent and child can benefit from reading WHAT IS YOUR LIFE'S WORK, as some of the most important life lessons are touched upon in deeply personal ways.

In an age when it's been said that the art of letter writing is dead, this book dares to raise the subject of we can best find a balance between work and the rest of our life. The intense passion conveyed in most of the letters helps bring this subject to life in a way that is sure to help anyone rekindle their own inner fire, and regain a sense of what it is we're all working for that really matters.

Christine Mockler Casper begins with a clear working definition of emotional intelligence. She then goes on to illustrate the steps leading to the resulting benefits of developing personal emotional intelligence.

The book is filled with inspiring and motivational quotations that set the pace for each chapter. I especially liked the succinct chapter summaries.

Each chapter includes thought provoking exercises in the form of a Personal Emotional Intelligence Journal, Self Motivational Assessments, and Inter Personal Assignments. These exercises are stimulating and an important part in the process of applying the principles of self actualization and becoming an authentic individual.

The book is a guidebook for discovering self assessment techniques, understanding in relationships, and new skills in managing others. The work is scholarly, well researched, and well documented, with extensive appendices. The bibliography provides a complete and helpful resource list.

I highly recommend this book for the professional business leader, or the lay person interested in strengthening and broadening of social, family, and parental relationships. The book can be used as a classroom text, a small group study guide, or for individuals seeking encouragement.

The layout of the book is unique. The clean cover design and appealing page and chapter set up make this an excellent gift for any serious motivational student.

Christine Mockler Casper has shared a full body of knowledge about EQ (emotional intelligence) in a very palatable, well-written format. As an education and development professional I have collected a lot of anecdotal evidence over the years about the importance of emotional intelligence in the workplace, but Ms. Casper has infused research throughout the book to back up the EQ anecdotes in a very user-friendly prose.

From Now On With Passion provides an excellent synthesis of the theory of Emotional Intelligence combined with extensive practical application for personal and professional growth. Christine Mockler Casper begins with a review of the literature in the field and offers simple, practicle explanations of the significance of EQ. In the second part of the text, she parallels Goleman's structure to offer advice on improving EQ. In the final section, she offers some higher level application of the materials. Throughout the work, her exercises and assessment tools make the work personal and applicable. An excellent read with substantial payoffs.
