I was skeptical about this book at first...but the storyline pulled me in. And I must say I'm happy I was pulled in.
Kudos to the author for coming up with not only this storyline, but the strong character/heroine behind the story. I don't know if there are many women out there who could've endured "the price of passion"....
Compelling storyline...you'll be engrossed from the first chapter to the last!!!

Where do I start? Where do I begin? Well for one thing, don't be fooled by the title of this book(smile). Ms. Palfrey is an excellent writer, and excellent storyteller. I first read this book in the late 90's early 2000's, and I have to say that it's better the second time around. Ms. Palfrey's style of writing is so down to earth, it's like you can visualize what she has to say. "Walter" needed his"%&@" kicked for all that drama he put "Vivian" through, and she's a class act for just dealing with him. "Marc"....whatta man, whatta man!!! Chapter sixteen where they (Marc and Vivian) finally do the do was so spicy that I had to throw cold water on my face!!! All the other characters in the book are exceptional as well, and "Sondra" from "Three Perfect Men" was an added treat. This novel started my love for Evelyn Palfrey books.

Walter is a very Passionate man. Walter also feels the need to spread the love to other's, woman outside his marriage especially. Being a Politician he is labeled as a person with a lot of power. Woman fall for men with money and power, plus Passion made him iresistable. His wife Vivian of ninteen year's married him for all the same reason's. But what is Vivian suppose to do when Walter birngs home a baby out side of the marriage? Should she stay or should she leave? If you were in this situation what would you do?

I have always been an avid fan of LJ Smith, so I was not surprised that this series was awesome. Her descriptions are always so clear (and so strange) that you can almost envision the people and things in front of you (unlike everyone else though I loved Rob more than Gabriel). As an adult now, I still read her books (although I have yet to find the last book of the Nightworld Series). A great read for anyone!!!!!!!
Good but not great

Whilst LJ Smith's books are a good read, I do get narked with the characters sometimes. Most of the lead characters are too nice and any 'bad' characters are always gothy and into heavy metal. Goodie is sickly sweet and oh so nice blonde, baddie is hot but very nasty brunette (see how easy it is to follow the plot read the secret circle if you don't believe me) But back to this, this had a great starting point, but lost the plot slighty. LJS seemed to be really hitting us on the head with how 'bad' Gabriel was and how nice everyone else was, and of course the main female is so understanding and desired by all. Liked it but not as much as the Forbidden Game.

I had read several of L.J.Smith's Nightworld series when I read Dark Visions, and I was immediately spellbound. The characters were all well-developed and very appealing - you cared what happened to them. Of course, Gabriel was my favorite. There's something so appealing about a bad boy in need of salvation. I read the whole thing through in one sitting and then sat down and read it through again. I would recommend it for anyone interested in the unknown, in coming-of-age books, or just interested in a good read.

This book is by FAR my favorite book of all time. Kaitlyn Fairchild is my new favorite female character. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings... Yeah, they don't hold a candle to L.J. Smith's Dark Visions Collector's Edition.
Personally, I am AMAZED that this book doesn't get more recognition than it currently does. I would enjoy it more than life itself if this book became a movie. I'm actually telling all my friends about it.
I am not much of a reader... at all... But this book... This book made me cry, made me laugh, made me think hard on certain subjects... everything. I loaned my copy to a friend in hopes of getting her hooked on it too.
I have read and re-read this book, time and time again, for years. It never gets old. Smith's vivid descriptions of surroundings and characteristics give me a good mental image of all her characters.
I am seriously thinking about getting her other books. In fact, I will.
Read this book. If you think you knew what a good book is... you haven't read anything until you read this.

I wish Radclyffe would write more novels with medicine, her second profession, as a backdrop. There are thousands of fans of this genre out there who also have a fascination with the medical arena who, like myself, would jump at the chance to plunge into the lives of more characters in that setting. Like the character Tory in The Provincetown Series, these doctors are interesting as Radclyffe defines them by their professional as well as their personal lives

This book rocks! As soon as I got into it I said "this author MUST be a doctor...and so she is. I enjoy and am interested in books with a medical setting, and this is by far the most authentic I have ever read, no matter how famous the author. This book deserves a wide readership and a place on best seller lists. I don't usually read romance fiction (especially straight) finding it to be formulaic, predictable and silly. I do read some lesbian romance, just so I can read something I can relate to, but this book elevates the genre to a literate and realistic level. Strong characters are well developed, and I thought the "secrets" that shaped each woman were brilliant, original, and fascinating. The love scenes are moving and believable, but never uncomfortabe. To me they represent exactly the essence of sex between women, neither too graphic and crude nor too gauzy. Three thousand cheers for Radclyffe!!!!!!!!!!!

Once again, Radclyffe has written absolutely beautiful, and brilliant prose. This woman must have a vivid imagination, or has lived each of these experiences. I am sufficiently addicted! In this book, Saxon Sinclair is a surgeon, much like the character of Tory King, in the Provincetown Tales. Saxon is totally focused on her work, and hates intrusion. Then Jude Castle, a film-maker commissioned to film a documentary, invades the hospital where Saxon works and immediately sets up shop with her cameras and spotlights. Dr. Sinclair protests and thinks that cameras have no place in a trauma unit. Jude thinks Dr. Sinclair is the most arrogant witch she has ever metand just wants to do her job and get out of there. With the sparks, comes attraction and as Jude watches the skillful and graceful Dr. Sinclair in action, she becomes attracted to her and the sexual tension builds until you can't stand it. (Radclyffe is good at building sexual tension) Finally they hook up and the way Radclyffe writes the sex scenes-Whoa! I loved this book and I love the way Radclyffe writes. I am hooked!

Changed my outlook on a faith that I had lost faith in...:)
Completely agree with the other reviewer comparing it to a B-12 Shot for the soul. I feel that God has used this book to jump start the healing of my own brokenness from the church and from God, who i believe now more than I ever have, wants to be apart of and repair the messy sides of our lives. I became a Christian's Author truly showed (or reminded us) Christ's call for his followers to be compassionate and loving to the broken. Something I think we all need to practice and preach.

He really helps the reader understand the challenge to "follow" Jesus. I am buying more copies to give to friends and family.

This is like no other cookbook you've ever seen. The recipes are easy to understand, use ingredients you probably already have on-hand, and come out perfectly even on the first try! I have literally HUNDREDS of cookbooks in my collection and after buying and using this one, I am paring down. This book makes many of the others completely unnecessary because compared to A Passion for Baking, the other books are simply ordinary (sorry, Martha). I have just bought Marcy's [Jewish] Holiday Baking and am looking forward to trying those, too. The recipes ideas start with the ordinary and end up show-stopping. I am now a HUGE Marcy Goldman fan!

THIS COOKBOOK IS NOW MY NEW FAVORITE. THE RECIPES ARE OVER THE TOP AND DELICIOUS. THE RECIPES ARE EASY TO FOLLOW AND AS AN AVID BAKER THEY ARE PERFECT. I LOVE HOW SHE TAKES A NORMAL RECIPE AND TWISTS IT TO MAKE IT EVEN BETTER AND OVER THE TOP BY ADDING MORE OOEY GOOEY GOODNESS. THAT IS TOTALLY MY KIND OF THING. EVERY SINGLE THING THAT I HAVE MADE HAS BEEN OUT OF THIS WORLD. THE STRAWBERRY STUFFED CHEESECAKE BLONDIES WERE SUPERB. THE CHUNKY CHEESE BREAD WAS TO DIE FOR, AND THE SERENDIPITY DELUXE BARS WERE ADDICTING. I'VE MADE LOTS MORE. THE PANCETTA LAYERED BREAD FANTASTIC, I COULD GO ON & ON. BASICALLY WHEN I'M FEELING SINFUL THIS IS THE BOOK I REACH FOR. THANK YOU MARCY GOLDMAN FOR FULFILLING MY PASSION OF BAKING.

I ordered this book after it was referenced on one of my favorite baking blogs. I'm probably what most would consider a baking snob-- I turn my nose up at warm, buttery rolls in favor of crustier, artisan bread. Likewise, the mall and the bookstore are not where I go to get tasty treats.
So, when several of the recipes were labeled "mall muffins" and "bookstore squares" I started feeling a little uncomfortable. Nonetheless, I gave the cookbook a chance and found out that the recipes are rather good. Plus, it is nice to have recipes for desserts that can be assembled in an hour (and do not require 2 days of work or 20 separate steps). In a nutshell, these are simple, reliable, homey recipes that are good for bake sales, baking with the kids, and pot lucks-- many recipes are also suitable for company.
The bread and pizza section are not suited to my personal tastes and convictions, but they do provide easy recipies for bakers who are in a hurry or need a good starting place.
Some of the language is a little annoying (e.g. the section on cheesecakes is called "Say Cheesecake" and one recipe is called "Grand Funk Granola Bars. She calls the cinnamon buns "sleazy good").
Some of the recipes are not reliable. The Blueberry Hill Cookies for example do not hold together (not sure how one egg is expected to bind two cups of oatmeal-- only 1/3 cup of flour did not help matters... they completely fell apart). This was not the only flawed recipe, but the majority of them seemed OK./
Here are the sections of the book:
1) baking secrets
2) loaves large & small
3) rolls, baby breads, & buns
4) pizza & other flatbreads
5) scones & biscuits
6) the muffin shoppe
7) the cookie jar
8) the biscotti bakery
9) bars & squares
10) quick breads and coffee cakes
11) pies, tarts & pastries
12) sweet yeast baking
13) cake creations

I prefer Dorie Greenspan's Baking From My Home to Yours, but this book is a fine as well. If you already have Baking From My Home to Yours, I do not think A Passion for Baking adds much since they are very similar.
In sum, if you need an all-purpose baking book, a Passion for Baking is the book for you. The recipies are clear, easy-to-read, and very easy to execute. You do not need to be an expert baker to get good results... and if you are an expert baker, you are bound to find a handful of recipes to add to your repertoire.

This is a nice piece of work. The book does spend far more time than I wanted justifying the multitude-of-interests person. But it was quick reading at the beginning so not much of a burden.
There are some exceptional insights here, and some wonderful tactics for dealing with your range of interests.
The introductory exercises (Five from Fifty = prioritizing, Many Circles = weighting, Birthday Party = accomplishments) can help clarify things for those caught in the mire of doing. Clarifying your interest, no matter how many there are, is an important aspect of this work.
I particularly like the idea of Focal Points - temporary assignments you give yourself in order to have the freedom to learn or accomplish.
Reverse flowcharts are great in that they force you to see what you are doing that gets in your way. Basically think of how you can ensure something will not happen - there you go, many times that's what you're doing.
I think the concept of Four Frames - which is applied to volunteering - can be used in a far greater sense as well. Not simply limited to convincing a potential volunteering opportunity, but if you look at your larger goals, and your place in your journey - this approach can be used to convince your spiritual self what it is you want to contribute, and why that would be a good thing for all.
The crux of the entire message of the book is "I'd love to help you feel fulfilled rather than overwhelmed."
The author states "Renaissance Souls work best when we can match our activities to our energy flow." I think this is true for everyone, but it isn't something we value in the US all that much (instead we're told to bang our heads for 14 hours and meet that deadline, many times producing a lower quality result). So, without having a specific prescription for each moment of your day, the approach here allows you flexiblity in choice based on your motivations at that time. Yes, balanced planning - I've been waiting for someone else to say it.
My favorite story in the entire book is the one on Mozart, and his pursuing his purpose, becoming what he could be in the midst of all else going on. The author weaves an intricate connection about how this benefited so many others than if he were to try and be something he were not. Very nice... "One of the best things you can do for other Renaissance Souls is to keep growing." And I would add, the best thing we can do for all beings.
Toward the end of the book I felt the work there was less inspired. It focused on examples, whereas I think a book works much better if at the end it brings us back up to that higher-purpose and leaves us with lofty placement. We end on a real high then.

I could not be happier that I ordered this book! I'm 26 years old, and so far the only thing I've partially identified with is the "Twenty-Something" feeling, kind of lost, but full of potential. When I got this book, I read the first hundred or so pages right away, I was just hooked immediately. I really loved the tests and used them and now I do feel much more clear about my (current) focus. I'm definitely a Renaissance Soul (18 out of 20 on the Quiz in the book). I have done everything from Retail to Real Estate to Banking to Social Work to starting businesses, etc. I just got married, so that took up a lot of time and energy for a while, but now I have new goals and clarity. I really loved her example of the ice cream shop, likening the choice of ice cream, etc. to the choices of things we're interested in. She says it would be just as hard and paralyzing to try and choose one for the rest of your life as it would be to try and choose them all, that's why you need a "sampler", which is free to change, but that will give you focus. So, my current sampler is: Studying for and taking the GRE and applying to Grad School, writing a business plan for the business I want to start, spending time with my new husband, learning how to make soup (I just want to learn how to make soup!), and making healthier choices regarding food and activity. So, Thank You, Margaret! I think you are right on with your idea of a Renaissance Soul, and I'm so happy you wrote this book. It was my pleasure to read it! =)

It was the subtitle that drew me in...urged me to pick up the book... begged me to take more than a glance at it. Life Design for People with Too Many Passions to Pick Just One. Hmmmm, someone must be writing about ME! I discovered this book while browsing at the local library on a day that had me grappling with a way to explain to my husband that which is almost inexplainable to me: I have so many creative interests, and I am so passionate about them, that I allow them to absorb me (his words, not mine). I don't know why that is. I don't know how that is. I don't know when that started. And I don't know how to change that, or if I even want to change that. Why should I have to? To a person who isn't so inclined, I guess it seems more than a little odd that I can't "pick one thing and be the best at it."
And so it was that Lobenstine happened into my life with important information and answers to unspoken questions at just the right time. As she so wisely points out, our society tends to foster the idea of becoming an expert in one area and sticking to it. Society tends to look negatively on the concept of the "Jack of all trades and master of none" life. But Lobenstine contends that line of thinking is exactly the reason it is hard to undertand some creative souls and their passions for so many different avenues.
In an easily readable, most enjoyable format, Lobenstine offers hope to the creative souls who hope to be able to "have it all." She contends that it is possible to incorporate those passions and a paying job and be happy. Simple quizzes allow readers to identify what their individual values are and where those values can lead. Case studies of actual creatives offer guideposts and encouragement to those of us who struggle with the expectations of others vs the expectations we hold for ourselves.
The Renaissance Soul is divided into four very interesting, practical and engaging sections. Part I, Claiming Your Renaissance Soul, provides readers with characteristics of the renaissance soul personality: defining success by mastered challenges rather than how far up the ladder a person has climbed, casting aside single-minded focus in favor of variety. Lobenstine also includes a section that dispells myths about what a creative soul is and is not... Renaissance souls are not superior to others, nor do they fall into that diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder personalities. While some may be, not all renaissance souls are geniuses. They do not use their many and varied interests to avoid the realities of life, and they are NOT job-hoppers!
To substantiate her theories, Lobenstine offers examples of well-known individuals who fit her definitions for a renaissance soul--Ben Franklin, Leonardo da Vinci, Sir Thomas More and Maya Angelou, to name a few.
Part II, Thriving on Many Interests Without Feeling Scattered, was perhaps one of the most valuable sections for me personally. Digging into the heart of what drives creatives, Lobenstine challenges us to take a good hard look at ourselves and to clearly identify our personal value systems. She offers several revealing quizzes for her readers, including choosing five out of a list of fifty values and identifying the five values that are most important at the particular moment, or writing not the well-known self obituary but writing toasts to one's self by four individuals who know the creative person best. Scrutinizing personal values even more closely, Lobenstine asks her readers to consider how their own life meshes (or not) with the lives of those other individuals who are part of the creative's inner circle. She stresses the importance of identifying whether an individual's activities are reflecting personal values or the values of others. She offers practical ways to not only evaluate this but to move closer to a place where personal values take precedence over the values of others.
Part III, Practical Realities: Career Design for Pursuing You Passions, is the nitty-gritty for those creatives who want to give up their day jobs but just can't. The author points out that, while it is not always possible to give up the day job, it sometimes is easier than one may think to secure a day job that will help the creative soul move closer to realizing their passions and dreams. How would you like to get "paid for your passion?" How would you like to be able to focus on your passions, sell yourself, find non-traditional ways to indulge your creative side without compromising self? All of these areas are presented in a revealing way that caused this reader to experience several ah-ha moments along the way.
Part IV, Successful Life Design for Renaissance Souls, takes the creative spirit one step closer to realizing goals and dreams by helping readers make a commitment. Lobenstine offers a unique and comfortable way to put desires into action--the PRISM test. As she explains, "The PRISM test puts your current set of Focal Points through a rigorous evaluation. Just as light bursts into color as it passes through a prism, this test allows you to examine your Focal Points from new angles, therby clarifying and confirming your eventual selections." PRISM is an anacronym for Price (How much will it cost you to get to your Focal Point?), Reality (What will the day-to-day, nitty-gritty of engaging in this Focal Point really involve?), Integrity (Why does this particular Focal Point seem particularly worthwhile to you?), Specificity (When you are specific about constitutes success, you can articulate your desires to yourself and others), and Measurability (Setting specific dates for attainment of your goals allows you to map out a plan and take specific steps toward passionate productivity).
Margaret Lobenstine is the perfect person to walk creative Renaissance Souls through the process because she, too, is a Renaissance Soul. Not only is she a motivational speaker, writer and life-coach, she has been a successful bed-and-breakfast owner, a family business consultant, and a literary specialist. She encourages renaissance souls to be role models to others. To learn more about the author and her work, visit her website.

I consider myself the very model of a Renaissance Soul: I love to read about lots of subjects; I used to garden quite fanatically; I'm in a knitting/crocheting phase right now; music is a big part of my life; and I've been doing agility and other training with our dog. Oh, and I have a day job, too! My answer to "what do you want to be when you grow up" changed so often when I was younger that it made my head spin! So I was hoping this book would help me sort out how to feel fulfilled and yet not too diluted pursuing my many interests.
And indeed it did. Here are just a few helpful tidbits I took from the book: You do have to choose a few interests at any given time, based on the things you value most, but those choices don't have to be forever. You should quit doing things that don't fit with the values you hold most dear. You can combine interests (for example, I like to write and cook -- maybe I should write about food?). You need to block time for your interests, but not be inflexible about which interest you pursue at a given time. There are lots of creative ways to get where you want to go, even if you pursue many different careers over time, without starting at Square One each time.
And so much of what the author said validated the way I approach life, even toward the end helping me understand why I sometimes feel unmotivated to do anything at all.
My only complaint is that the book starts to sound branded or jargony, with its Renaissance Soul Way and Focus Points Notebook -- kind of like the Chicken Soup series or the Finish Rich series. This Renaissance Soul finds that stuff kind of annoying. But the content was so rich and sensible that the annoyance was minor. This book has really gotten me thinking about what I need to do to more fully enjoy my many interests.

This book helped me to understand myself so much better. Some parts of me that others and even myself had considered negative attributes, turn out to be good things. The Focal Points part was especially helpful, helping me to take the 3 zillion things I'm interested in down to 5 to concentrate on. I have have had a little sign on my refrigerator for years that says, " Not all who wander are lost." This book helped me feel very validated and feel better about myself. I'm very thankful to the author, Margaret Lobenstine. Thank you so much.

As I read the case studies in this book, I recognized many of my peers who are in need of the resources that the author provides for developing a renewed personal passion for life. Anyone trying to energize the search for personal direction for the next life stage will appreciate the specific suggestions and examples. I have read this book twice already. Another book that I recommend is" The Five People You Meet in Heaven", and "He Never Called Again."

A dear friend of mine gave me this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Dr. Zoglio does an excellent job of describing the keys to happiness. Long ago, I independently arrived at many of the same conclusions about happiness, but I have never been able to articulate them as clearly and simply as Dr. Zoglio does in her book. While reading it, I found myself underlining text and writing notes on almost every page. I have subsequently bought my friend her own copy and also bought copies for my two grown-up children with the hope that the book will "tickle" them, too.

I was a little disappointed in this book. I had expected something original and different. It seemed to be a summary of books I had already read. The ideas were good and there was nothing wrong with the book but it was nothing new. I really didn't find one idea that wasn't similar to something I had heard or read before.

I was only 12 years old and living in Dallas when Candy Montgomery took an axe to Betty Gore during the summer of 1980. Too young at the time to be concerned with local scandals and crimes of passion, I scarcely even remember hearing about the murder. "Evidence of Love" was first published in 1985 when I was in high school and that was when I read this book the first time. I'm 40 years old now and have just re-read it.
Having read it as a kid and now, having read it as an adult, I realize I see this story in a whole new light. It's well written and the character development is practically flawless. No effort has been made to gloss these people over - they are all too human and that makes what happened even scarier. The idea that average, ordinary, church-going people can be tangled up in such an unsavory mess is more than a little un-settling. The Gores and the Montgomery's could be your neighbors or mine. Additionally, the way the Collin County officials and judicial system handled the investigation and subsequent trial is alarming. Judge Ryan's obvious bias is enough to make anyone question the presumption of innocence in 1980's Collin County. I don't know if Candy Montgomery was guilty or not but I do know, that in this country, everyone is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt by a jury of their peers. After reading this book, I question the methods used by the Collin County DA's office in building their case against Candy Montgomery. In reading this book for the 2nd time, I realized that secondary to the crime itself and the events that lead up to it, is the story of how skewed justice can be in small towns where everybody knows everybody else.
I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who is enjoys reading about true crime. Although these events took place almost 30 years ago, they are still stark reminders that things are not always as they seem and that justice isn't always what it should be. In that regard, it's still a very relavent story for today. I do wish though, that the authors had included photos of all the characters and of the places where these events unfolded. I think it helps the reader to see them as real human beings and not just characters in a story.
Strangely enough, I now live just minutes from where these events took place and I often drive through the Collin County towns referenced in this book. The landscape hasn't changed much - a Starbucks or two have gone up but other than that, these are still the same sleepy little towns they were in 1980...and after all these years, it's still shocking that they were at the epicenter of so much scandal and tragedy.

I just read that "Murder by the Book," a series on Court TV, filmed an episode in Wylie in March. The premise of the show is to take an author and ask them what real-life crime intrigued them. Author Sandra Brown found the 1980 Wylie axe murder of Betty Gore to be compelling. "Murder by the Book" does interviews with the principal law enforcement figures involved in the case and presents the case as a documentary with comment from the author. The Wylie episode should air in November 2007. I've also read this book numerous times and wishes for photos of the people involved. I'll be sure to tape this show when it airs in November!

I agree with everyone else, this is a GOOD book!
The only problem I had with it was that there are no pictures of the people involved. I like to see the people in the story, I really dont know why but I think it helps to see them in my mind's eye. But, otherwise I loved the book.
If it was fiction I'd have a hard time believing it.

Mark Albion explains a very contemporary balancing act: how to run a business based on values and still make a profit. Companies ranging from Starbucks and Ben & Jerry's to small bakeries and toy makers have prospered while supporting the social concerns of their founders and employees. Building such values-based businesses is not easy. They face the same profit-and-loss problems as other small companies, plus they take on an additional layer of social issues. Albion tells his personal story, buttressed by corporate examples and interviews with 75 owners of values-based businesses. getAbstract suggests this book full of practical advice to anyone who is willing to sign up for the challenge of running a values-based business.

This book gives good insight on how to build a successful business that goes beyond just profitability. Mark Albion describes how to strike a balance between personal values, profitability, corporate social responsibility, and environmental contributions by what he calls the "five values-based leadership practices". I do recommend this book to those interested in learning the characteristics of a values-based business leader.

Poor. It consists of fillers and redundancies that could hypothetically be widdled down to a small pamphlet. Albion throws around trendy managerial phrases throughout, but fails to inform the reader as to how to seriously apply them.
Thank you Dr. Mark Albion

While most of my Babson classmates are pursuing jobs in the corporate sector, I am working on a business plan for a values-based business which I hope to start after graduation this December.
