This book is well suited for children as well as childcare providers. The main theme of the book is displayed as big pictures for children to view. The actions are also given as guidelines for elder children to figure out and play. It encourages music and movement in children of all ages. The elephant on the rope is illustrated very well.

The "Pentagon Papers" of New Zealand
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-26
This book (called the "The Book that Brought Down Brash" by the national newspaper the Star-Times) caused such a stir with New Zealand politics it was said that the head of the local right wing party, the National Party resigned in order to avoid being implicated in a number of alleged scandals on election spending.

The book was published a year after the 2005 election, one of the most controversial - and according to many, corrupt elections in New Zealand history. Even after extensive media damage control, the first edition was sold out before its release in my city.

Bob Garfield, host of the US based "On the Media" said that this book - using stolen emails for many of its allegations - was comparable to the Pentagon papers. After reading this well sourced book, it is clear that the allegations of Labour corruption pale in comparison to their major competitor; it is essential reading for anyone interested in New Zealand politics, or political corruption in general.

Any Excuse for a Dinner Party
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-27
I really enjoy giving dinner parties, but had begun to run out of novel themes and dinner menus. Then I unexpextedly came across Ms Rose's "The Hosting Books". The central book entitled "Calendar and References" was exactly what I needed. It provides a complete list of every celebration day going, as well as the birthdays of famous people. For example, it was a friend's birthday on 23 December which is Japan's national day. So we feasted on sushi and terriyaki washed down with saki. The next birthday on the list is 22 February - also St Lucia day - and I'm already on the hunt for tasty Caribbean recipes.

When I first saw the Guest History folder, which is one of the trio of Hosting Books, I wondered if I was capable of keeping it up-to-date. So, instead, I got each guest who came to dinner to complete their own page. It doubles as an address book or agenda which is also handy.

The third book,"Gatherings" helps you plan the dinner menu and table organisation. My favourite section for each meal is the post-party wrap up. It's a sort of diary of what memorable things were said or happened during the meal. Looking back on the comments both others and myself have recorded already, I'm reminded of my highschool yearbooks and the witty remarks my friends made way back in the 70's.

I think "The Hosting Books" really do deserve a 5 star rating as they give you every help you could possibly want to organise a dinner party, and then more - they even make it possible to look back at those moments which time (and alcohol!) make cloudy. I'm laughing to myself right now as I reread what Martina said to Alison about her ex-boyfriend at last night's Rabbie Burns supper.......

Sometimes, even with great planning and the best of intentions, things can go wrong - very wrong. In HOUSE PARTY, Casey and Jen learn that the hard way.

When Casey's mother announces that they are going away for the weekend and Casey will need to go with them, Casey and her friend Jen come up with another plan. The girls tell Casey's parents that she can stay at Jen's house, while Jen tells her mother that she is planning to stay with her friend at Casey's house so she won't be all alone. The intent of this deception is so that the girls can plan a party in Casey's unsupervised house.

With Jen's encouragement, Casey agrees to host the party and invite at least fifteen people. Casey works hard to pack away any breakable objects and "party proof" the main rooms of the house. While she is busy with the physical preparation, Jen is busy online inviting people and spreading word about the event on MSN. She announces that she invited more than the agreed upon fifteen just in case some of them can't come. According to Jen, it would be worse than no party at all if no one shows up.

Shortly after 9:00pm the guests begin to arrive. At first the party atmosphere is upbeat, and Casey is glad she let Jen talk her into it. However, in no time at all, her worst nightmares begin to come true. The party is out of control.

HOUSE PARTY by Eric Walters is a fast-paced story that won't sit on the shelf for long. Teens, with or without "party" experience, will relate to the girls and the predictable yet riveting action at their party.

VERY SWEET BOOK

These books are designed for very young children. They are sturdy, have absolutely precious illustrations of mice getting into all kinds of trouble, and have an easy rhythm to the verse. I liked the drawings so much, I even got one for myself, and I'm, well, let's just say I'm over 3 years old by quite a few years. I hope the author intends to do more.

Harman's book is a little gem which is interesting, informative and easy to read. He demystifies Marxism and lays to rest the idea that you need a college degree to understand it. 'How Marxism Works' is a fantastic introduction to Marxism that gives an overview of all the main theories in an easily understandable manner. For all those people who want to change the world but think that Marxism is a discredited pipe dream, this book will open your eyes and light the fire in your belly.

My friends used this book to throw me a great party. We went away for the weekend and they kept pulling out more games and recipes. Many of the games and recipes are oriented towards male anatomy, but it is done with taste so most of the time I wasn't embarassed in front of my mother in law. They also didn't call for spending a ton of money, which was nice. Since I am the first to marry, my final present was this book so I can do it up right for my friends.
