Creatively Fantastivically Brilliant!

I was thrilled to see a book offered that prompts children to interpret, understand and then illustrate their interpretations of the lessons taught in this book. As a teacher, I find that most children's books attempt to dazzle the eyes and do not demand a great deal in terms of creativity. In this book, however, the children are given initial prompts to help them shape thier ideas about feelings, but are then given the space to draw and experiment which allows them to reinforce and reinvent further variations on a theme. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wishing a different and more individual approach to learning about feelings...top on my list!

Lord Bolingbroke is one of the most fascinating figures of the 18th century. The works collected in this volume, most importantly his "Dissertation upon Parties" and "The Idea of a Patriot King," are undeniable classics of political philosophy. Throughout, Bolingbroke expresses a strong devotion to liberty and voices even more severe criticism of government. Yet, it is surely an odd mixture, as Bolingbroke is indeed also a Tory, although, a rather Whiggish Tory if I might say so. The influence and significance of these works is hard to overestimate. In particular, they had a profound impact on the American colonists, including such giants as Jefferson and John Adams. Above all, Bolingbroke was also a fine writer, and his work is a pleasure to read.

Bonar Law - The Forgotten Prime Minister
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-01-11
In a well-written and engaging work, Prof. Adams brings to life one of the most overlooked British politicians of the early 20th Century, Andrew Bonar Law. What is so amazing about this obscurity is the fact of the immense effect Bonar Law had on British politics. He played a pivotal role in toppling the Asquith government during World War I, but his most lasting legacy was his involvement with Ulster and the Irish Question. Adams rightly states that the existence of Northern Ireland is Bonar Law's greatest achievement. (NOTE: This is not a value judgement in any way of the Irish Question, simply a fact) Despite being an 'academic' work, this book is very easy to read and filled with wry humor that makes potentially dry history come to life. I highly recommend this work.

Wonderful Recipes!

I actually have the original edition, and not the revised edition, but I'm assuming they are very similar.
The recipes are wonderful. The best cookie (and a few breads, cakes, etc.) cookbook I have encountered. I haven't encountered a bad recipe yet and I've made probably 3/4 of them. The recipes are nicely organized by the style of cookie such as bar, drop, molded and no-bake. This makes it easy to find a good recipe by the time you want to spend on baking, not just by the ingredients.

Good Quick Overview of a Pivotal American Event
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

Allison's slim book (65 pages) gives a great overview of the events leading up to what has become known as the Boston Tea Party. It introduces the characters involved and does a good job of giving the reader an understanding of what happened and why. Because of its size, it just gives an overview. But the overview is enough to encourage the reader to find weighter tomes for more detail or possibly decide to come to Boston and see the replicas of the ships involved and tour the museum.

Letter from Benjamin Hatcher
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-27
Benjamin Hatcher of Boston writes a long letter describing his participation in the Boston Tea Party, to William Yancy of South Carolina, June 18, 1774. Everything seems authentic, with nice illustrations.

In fine detail, the story of the Boston Tea Party is a bit different than what we know today as the legend, but the essentials are the same: the colonists boarded three British ships and threw the crates of tea overboard, due to a tax on tea which they objected to.

Benjamin Hatcher is a seller of tea and makes it clear why he opposes the tax: people can't afford it. There's a black market in tea imported from other sources, while the Tea Party is going on.

Interesting and well written.

All of the Headlines From History books are great. We are a homeschool family, and we used this book to supplement our history lesson. The content is accurate, unbiased, and suitable for elementary students. There is even a glossary at the end of the book. The only catch- price! But if you are passionate about your student's education, it may be well worth it- especially if you have other children to which you can pass it on. Remember- donate books like these to your local library when you don't want them anymore (and write it off come tax time). If your library is like mine, books like these are almost nonexistent. HOMESCHOOLERS: READ MY OTHER REVIEWS!
