Yellow Dog Party

"Yellow Dog Party" is the sixth Thomas Black mystery by Earl Emerson. Floyd Boyd, Jimmy Canfield, Denny McCallum, and Rex Ronquist hold an annual beer bash and party in honor of Canfield's yellow dog who was killed by a Ritz Cracker truck. They call it the Yellow Dog Party. These 4 friends who are successful businessmen ask PI Thomas Black to find 4 women with whom they want to have "dream dates." When Black finds the first woman, she is in a coma in an Oregon hospital. As he and friend Kathy Birchfield are leaving the hospital, they are abducted by 3 masked men. Kathy is able to run, but Thomas is assaulted and hung from a tree. Luckily for him, the branch snaps and he is spared. He begins to hunt down these 3 men and find out why they wanted to kill him. As he searches for the other 3 women, it becomes clear that one of the 4 men has an ulterior motive. Then Denny McCallum is found murdered in a hotel room. This novel also deals with the relationship of Thomas Black and Kathy Birchfield. Kathy announces that she is engaged to her boyfriend, Philip. With the possibility of losing her, Thomas finally tells her that he loves her and they kiss. The next books will have to deal with this situation. "Yellow Dog Party" is one of the best of the Thomas Black novels and is highly recommended.

You have to love Cam Jansen. When you're a kid, you read all of these stories about magic powers, mystery, and adventure. But everyone tells you magic can't exist. Cam Jansen manages to solve every case without the use of magic... she's a real girl. That's what makes her special and what makes you want to red more and more. Cam Jansen is a real kid superhero, and the thought that a person like her could actually exist... makes her the best kid detective ever! Our family loves Cam Jansen!

Three parties factor into Zibby Payne and the Party Problem, the third book in the delightful Zibby Payne series.

First, popular Amber invites many of the girls in their class to her exclusive party. She has a history of throwing the biggest, coolest bashes around. This time around, some of her invitations include a "special coupon" redeemable for a secret prize. The girls who don't get invited at all feel left out, and those who get invitations without coupons wonder why Amber included them at all if she doesn't think they are cool enough to get the bonus surprise. Zibby thinks Amber's being unfair, and she wants to boycott the party.

Shortly after Amber's event comes Savannah's roller skating party and sleepover. Zibby is excited to go. She thinks that Savannnah's a lot more friendly than Amber. But when the skating is done and it's time to go to Savannah's house, Zibby finds out that her best friend Sarah wasn't invited to the sleepover. It turns out that the party girl's mom permitted her to invite twelve girls to the rink, but only six back to their house. Upset that people are being left out again, Zibby turns down the sleepover and leaves with Sarah instead.

Zibby decides to have her own party. Determined to have "the most inclusive party on the planet," she makes a lengthy guest list naming "everyone [she's] friends with, sometimes friends with, used-to-be friends with, and want-to-be friends with." The guest list grows as she adds the boys she plays soccer with and two girls she thinks are kind of weird but doesn't want to leave out. After she "accidentally dis-invites" those girls and her well-intentioned plans go awry, she has to eat some humble pie before the party's over.

Zibby would be fast friends with Ramona Quimby. I highly recommend this series for kids in elementary school and just beginning middle school. Alison Bell has captured the ups and downs and dramas of tweendom while preserving the innocence of that age.

Great Ideas That Are Easy For Kids To Do!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-10
This book has many bonuses! Not only are the craft and gift ideas easy for kids to make, the illustrations throughout the book are entertaining! The book is filled with "Smile" cartoons that brighten your day and add joy as you flip through the pages. There are ideas for every season and occasion to keep kids busy at any time of the year. Also, the back of the book contains several humorously illustrated certificates that parents (or teachers)can give to children after making a craft, like, the "Creative Genius" award, or the "Stretching Your Ability" award! This is a great book for parents to keep handy when they hear the inevitable, "Mom, I'm bored; what can I do?" When television is out the question, parents should hand this book to thier child with a room full of craft-making goodies, and let kids create and have a blast with their talents!

A cute story, and quick read, about a messenger fairy named Breeze. The book is a 3D pop-up book, done very nicely with bright and happy illustrations of fairies going about busy activities. There's a happy, positive message at the end, "When your heart is full of hopes and dreams, every day brings wonderful surprises" A must for the libraries of young fairy readers and lovers of the fae.
