A *must read* for all Canadians!

No other book that I have ever read has at once made me as proud to be a Canadian and as ashamed at the same time.
This book has given me a mini education in how our Government works and how economic policies are determined. This book has educated me in the vast scope of what my fellow Canadians are capable of achieving and indeed have done to make this a great country.
I am so proud of my country and being a Canadian. At the same time I am so distressed at what our current government is doing to our country. All I could think of while reading this book was "how can I get this man elected."
I am a member of the NDP here in B.C. but being in western Canada I don't have the opportunity to meet most of the nations elected representatives in Ottawa. I have personally helped our local NDP MP in her campaign and am very proud of her though she is now sadly retiring. This book gave me the opportunity to see inside the head of Jack Layton, the national leader of the NDP and I now feel that I know the issues from a national standpoint much better.
I think the viewpoint in this book reflects the majority of Canadian's thinking and if the book were more widely distributed could effect election results. Complicated issues made understandable and easy to read by the ordinary citizen, this book is a *must read* by all Canadians.
Though I agree with the NDP policies generally I had no idea that the leader of this forward thinking party was so innovative. Any Canadian that thinks that the Liberal party is representing our voices in Ottawa and implementing what is in our best interests, now or in the future, is in for a shock when they read this book.
I highly recommend that all Canadians of any party affiliation read this book, if only to know what the alternatives are to the current direction that our elected officials in Ottawa are leading us.
If I were a woman of means I would purchase many copies of this book, at least 100, and distribute them through Bookcrossing.com in order to circulate this message to a wider range of Canadians. Unfortunately I am one of the many Canadians living in poverty that have been affected by the many cutbacks imposed by the Liberals so this wish will not be fulfilled enless Jack Layton reads this and says "Hey, that lady is on to something! Let me see if I can get a hundred copies, possibly wholesale, and circulate them!". Jack if you read this, and can manage it, more Canadians will buy the book anyway because not everyone will get a book and everyone will want one :)
I am also going to recommend this book, if it's possible, for the 'One City, One Book' 2005 award in Vancouver and I appeal to people in other cities in Canada to do the same.
Our future and our children's future is dependant on the message in this book getting out to the Canadian population, please Canadians read this book!

My only complaint about this book is its subtitle. For, while it clearly speaks to Canadians, it also speaks to those of us in Britain, and I would guess would be extremely relevant to people in Continental Europe, the USA and Australasia, too. Sadly, except through Amazon.ca (yahoo), it seems unobtainable outside of Canada.

Layton is the leader of the New Democratic Party, Cananda's equivalent to the British Labour Party or American Democratic Party (except that the NDP appears not to have compromised itself rightward over the past 15 years, as its US and British sister-parties have!). His background is in grassroots movements for human and civil rights in Montreal, before moving into city politics in Toronto, and finally into national politics, becoming leader of his party in 2003, and leading them to a relatively impressive result in the 2004 general election. His book tells of ways that local authorities can make major differences to such key issues as air pollution, recycling, health, multiculturalism and eucation, as well as less obvious areas such as peace and the economy. Far from being Canada-specific (with its federal constitution), Layton's words seem almost tailor-made for city councils in Britain, and I am sure elsewhere too. I read his first chapter, on why politics are important, and was immediately enthused. Then in chapter two start his practical proposals, and what a breath of fresh air it has been to read a contemporary politician with firm principle-commitments AND practical ideas. I am now a Laytonite - read his book, if it is the first and / or last politics book you read. His style is readable and the book will not take up more than a couple or three of your days. Please read it.

SPLENDID FAILURE: POSTWAR RECONSTRUCTION IN THE AMERICAN SOUTH is a pick recommended for any college-level collection strong in American Civil War history in general and Southern history in particular. It analyzes and surveys the role of the Radical Republication Reconstruction policies which followed the war with particular attention to the role they played in the overthrow of their own program, offering a different interpretation of Reconstruction and the struggle for civil liberties in the South. An excellent survey evolves which offers depth and detail especially suitable for classroom debate and discussion.

An excellent book

Splendid Failure by Fitzgerald is an excellent book which can give anyone a good background in the history of Reconstruction. The book is easy to read and is accessible to anyone without much knowledge in American history. Most of all, however, the book places the Reconstruction in the larger context of American history, also examining the forces of industrialization in America and the impacts that the Civil War had on the South. Through this multi-faceted approach, the reader can gain a thoughtful and clear perspective on the Reconstruction.

I think my favorite part were all the pop-ups especially the one where they dance. It is a great book for people of all ages! I highly recommend it.

Stories to Stir the Imagination is a Parents' Choice Recommended product. This audio book runs approximately one hour and contains four traditional tales for children: Androcles and the Lion, A Mad tea Party, The Dutch Boy and the Dike, and the Ugly Duckling. Each of these four stories is inspirational, loving, and entertaining with an emphasis on acts of kindness and tolerance. Once again, Frances Kelly, the narrator, makes each of the stories come alive by changing her voice with the various characters and acting out each part of the drama. This unique aspect adds to substantially to the entertainment and makes the stories easier to follow.

Buy them! Your kids will love you for it!

Everything by Frances Kelley is excellent, and my four kids are crazy for them. There are three series, "Stories to Stir the Imagination", "Living Adventures in American History" and a series of Bible stories. I have them all and they are all great! I particulary love the ones about American History, as they are so educational as well. In addition they inspire a sense of patriotism which is lacking in this country. I do alot of carpooling and field trip driving. All the kids I've driven in the car love these CDs. I really can't recommend them highly enough!!

My son loves lift the flap books and he loves Dora, so we are always on the lookout for new items. This one was a real surprise. It is large and has many flaps on each page. The pictures are fun and silly. He really enjoys it. The numerous flaps and large fun pictures make this one a great buy.

"Surprise Party", by William Katz, is undeniably one of the best books I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Not once, either...I've read it several times! The characters are incredibly real, the plot extaordinarily suspenseful, and the pace is one rarely matched. It is a thriller, of sorts, with a little romance and a lot of intringue. The storyline is fascinating, to say the very least. This book is one I frequently suggest to friends, even those who aren't avid readers because the enjoyment is remarkable. I have heard nothing but praise for the author. I'd like to see many more books written by this author, and have been increasingly dismayed to find that he hasn't been available for some time. I give this book the highest possible rating for readers of all preferences!!!

I love how the anticipation builds up in this book, as Dora and friends prepare for Isa's surprise party. My 16 month old daughter has had this book for about 4 months, and she continues to like it more and more. She gets excited when Isa comes through the door and then again when the pinata breaks. Like other Dora books, a little bit of spanish is incorporated, and Dora asks questions. There are so many objects for children to point out in all the Dora books.

Great book for 1 year olds.

My daughter had The Surprise Party and A Day at the Beach since she was 6 months old. She's now 13 months old. We lost "A Day at the Beach" because we were carrying the two books everywhere with us. The Surprise Party is in shreds from reading it over and over again. She loves the story, point out the characters and different items in the book, like hats and baloons. Most of all she loves to yell "Surprise, Happy Birthday Isa!" and clap when it's time. Even though this book is always out and available she never lost interest in it. We always carry it with us in the car and at restaurants.

I just wanted to say that I am a Green Bay Packer fan, just like everyone else in Wisconsin and I also am a tailgater at all the Packer games. It is about time someone took all the great recipes from the tailgaters and printed them in a book. The recipes are out of this world and looking at all the pictures of the tailgaters makes me wish for the season to start again. Every Packer fan in the world should have a copy of this great book.

Great variety of fun recipes!

Dr. Jarvis is incredibly intelligent, thoughtful and insightful. Her book brings to light how our two main political parties use and abuse words and how they blur their original intended meanings. Thank you Dr. Jarvis for bringing your research and findings to the public. I hope everyone involved in campaigns reads your book, they will certainly benefit from it.
