What a great Bible teacher. If you like McGee, let me make another suggestion. If you want to understand prophecy (specifically the Premillennial/Pretribulational model) within the context and flow of the Bible, I suggest you check out the book "The History of the Future: A Commentary on Revelation and Matthew 24" by Marvin Blackburn, Timothy D. Blackburn. This is an excellent book for the beginner and more advanced student.

Let me begin by saying that Dr. McGee has been the inspiration for my book on Revelation "Dragons, Grasshoppers & Frogs". I should like to make two statements regarding that book. First, it is written for teens. Second, nothing I write will ever be as wonderful as the writings of Dr. McGee.
I have had the honor of taking the 'five year' trip through the bible several times with Dr. McGee. I know what he will say before he says it, and I find him correct about 99.9% of the time. I attended his seminary, and he is 'unofficially' the finest bible teacher I've ever had. Now, on to this book.
This book is intentionally brief. It is written for the average Joe, and is pre-millennial and pre-tribulational. Dr. McGee believes in a Rapture of the believers and a literal Kingdom coming to the earth. I agree with him.
If you would like to go into a bit more depth, I would suggest writing the Thru the Bible organization and purchasing Dr. McGee's study series on Revelation. It offers more insight. For the ultimate purchase, get this study series of tapes which are the most exhaustive tape set on Revelation ever produced.
If you are new to Revelation, this brief guide will get your foot in the door. The one thing you can count on in everything Dr. McGee writes is that it will be doctrinally sound. His love and reverence for the Word of God takes first place in everything he teaches.
God grant that my meager writing attempts will come close to bringing the blessing to others Dr. McGee has brought to me.

One of the better commentaries on Revelation

I have a large library of commentaries on Revelation as I have written one myself. There are many commentaries available on Revelation in the English speaking world and Alan Johnson's is one of the better ones. Not as large as Mounce or Beale but it has enough information to make it useful for the student, pastor or well read layman. It is very readable. It was originally part of vol 12 of the Expositor's Bible Commentary series. Now it is available as a single volume. For its price I would say it is a bargain.
Note: Among 7 recent scholarly commentaries on Revelation Johnson is the 15th most cited author.

There are only two modern commentaries on Revelation that stand out from the crowd, one is the classic by Mounce, now in its second edition and the other is Alan Johnson's, now thankfully in its own single volume and not part of EBC vol 12. Alan Johnson's volume is suitable for students, pastors, teachers and well read layman. He makes sufficient reference to the Greek to bring out the meaning without cluttering up the page. There are additional footnotes for scholars. His style is concise and precise and he is prepared to go against the crowd on the interpretation of Ch 17, Babylon is not just Rome. At its current price it is a bargain, you cannot go wrong.

John McArthur does an excellent job of offering a literal review of the book of Revelation. McArthur does not apologize nor make excuses for his pre-trib, pre-mail view (That is the conclusion ANYONE should come away with after a literal reading of scripture) Whereas he allows for symbolism in the images and vision, McArthur points out the fact represent actual events and persons (e.g. The woman harlot in chapters 17-18, four horseman, the beast, The woman clothed with the sun etc) All in all he offers very solid doctrine and as one review stated, lets scripture interpret scripture. The only reason I gave it four stars is as with most of his other commentaries, he goes a little long and can be a bit wordy. I am studying Revelation with the help of his commentaries and am on chapter 17. It was so detailed I had to turn to a more simple commentary I possess for help understanding this part of the book. In fairness, I would rather have a book that has a little too much detail and words than one that is oversimplified. Highly recommended for personal bible study or help teaching a class on the book of Revelation.

Revelation 12-22 (MacArthur New Testament Commentary) is a most read you will understand the book of revelation in detail. The book is easy to read with plenty of Bible references it will take verse by verse throughout the book of revelation giving the reader a deep understanding of the prophecy found in the Bible. I will definitely recommend the whole commentary series.

In this ambitious work, Williams takes on a challenging subject in a masterful and unusual way.
For nearly two thousand years, people have been interpreting the Book of Revelation as though it had been written specifically for their own time. Today we are flooded with uneven interpretations and fictionalized versions of the Book of Revelations, all attempting to prove that the events portrayed in this enigmatic portion of the New Testament are occurring or about to occur in our life time.
But what if they're way off the mark? What if the prophecies described in the Book were meant to reflect the times in which it was written? The concept makes good sense, and the research Williams puts behind his theories drives them home.
Not only does Williams describe in detail the political, financial and social woes suffered by Christ's devotees in the years directly following the crucifixion, he ties together well-documented historical events that match Revelations 4 through 16.
In the last chapter of the book Williams gives us his take on other interpretations and interpreters as widely varied as St. Augustine, the Jehovah's Witnesses, Billy Graham, Carl Jung, and Edgar Cayce.
This book is a MUST HAVE for any true biblical scholar. It is an even-handed, well-written look at a subject that is too often moved from research and faith to pure fiction.

Revelation And The Fall Of Judea: A Comparison Of Chapters 4 Through 16 To Historical Events Of A.D. 276 Through 135 by Maurice A. Williams is an insightful, point-by-point analysis of thirteen chapters in the New Testament Book of Revelation, comparing it closely with the key events of Israelite and Judean history. Written in terms completely accessible to readers of all denominational and educational backgrounds, Revelation And The Fall Of Judea is a welcome and highly recommended contribution to religious studies, and one that especially connects Revelation to the recorded words of John the Baptist.

Revelation of Jesus Christ is a verse-by-verse commentary based on exegesis of the text. Using careful textual analysis, Stefanovic provides original translation and detailed discussion of the biblical passages. Though it moves chronologically through the book of Revelation, the commentary is carefully organized into thematic sections with occasional overview chapters. A lengthy introduction discusses authorship and the time and place of writing of the book of Revelation; a discussion of the purposes, structure, and symbolic nature of the biblical book; and a presentation of various methods for interpretation and guidelines for study. What I like best about this commentary is that Stefanovic remembers his general reading audience. Though the scholar's notes (with chapter endnotes) make the commentary suitable as a textbook in college and seminary courses, the exposition which follows each section is enjoyable to read. Also included are a bibliography and helpful indexes, including a very thorough scriptural index.

I have found this book invaluable. My own students
(Ninth and Tenth graders) have even asked about
purchasing the book for themselves. It makes an
intricate book far easier to understand.

I won't say this is perfect literature, but I thought it was a suspenseful story, and I enjoyed it enough to actually buy two copies of it. I gave one away. If you like post apocalyptic types of stories, and you like Christian fiction, then you might like this one. In this book the characters are dealing with the "hard times" many people believe Revelation says will come before "The Second Coming." I like books about people resorting to sustainable/survivalist living, and I like Christian stories that reflect on God's love and provision. This story fulfilled both criteria. It is due a second read.
I gave it five stars because I just haven't found a book that is quite like it.

This exquisite book is a personal journey of such devotion and urgency that the power of the Holy Spirit seems to permeate the glorious color and vibrancy of Ms. Thomas' paintings. The reader/browser cannot be prepared by a simple "review" for the beauty and inspiration that lies within the pages of "Revelations" . When I looked into this book I felt like some intruder who unexpectedly comes upon a person deep in prayer and is unaware that she can be heard praising her Creator. Everything about the book is beautiful, from the unusual and original style of Ms. Thomas' painting to the elegant calligraphic rendering (by Mary Breeden) of the actual Biblical text of Revelation. It is encased in a lovely slipcover, which seems most fitting, because after one opens this treasure one needs to feel it is put away in something that will hold it safely kept, that will protect its stunning visions from harm, that will keep its gifted author's heart from careless tresspassers.
