FULL OF CHRIST - Discovering Christ in Revelation
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-25
This is one of the few books I have read that is full of Christ. If Daniel Parks in his Foreward can write of the author: "I have never heard him devote a message to any subject other than Christ", we too can say that we have never read another book so full of Christ, except Samuel Rutherford's Letters and Isaac Ambrose's Looking Unto Jesus. To enter into detail would be superfluous. Can any present-day reader bear 512 pages devoted exclusively to the Saviour (Victor because Victim, as Augustine finely says)? If so, it will not be long before his prayer is turned into praise.

(Though Amazon advertizes Daniel E. Parks as the author this book, it was actually written by Donald S. Fortner. Parks only wrote the foreword.)

Spiritual Biography
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-20
In our usual understanding of things, spiritual biography is perhaps an implicit contradiction. Biography represents "Bios", literally the writing of a life, the same life of creatures and cells described by biology. And the journey of the spirit, if it is acknowledged at all, appears to lie otside of time and space. Its "experiences" are unconditional.

The life story of Heart-Master Da Love-Ananda "answers" (and refutes) popular abstractions about spirits and spritual energies: Spirit is not an it. When Divine Consciousness mysteriously incarnates in the Form of a Person, we have the special reality of a Being who is also unconditoional. In this book Saniel Bonder, a devotee of Heart-Master Da, acknowledges that trying to put such Life into a biography is "like trying to photograph a huricane, or lasso a comet, or to travel into the heart of the Sun". Yet this biography, while taking issue precisely with the notion of the Divine as a mere abstraction or a metaphysically conceived other-dimensionality, demonstrates that there is no inherent separation between the conditional Spirit and Life. The "plot" of such a story is not transendence or initiation but universal opening of the Heart.

This story weaves ondinary life experiences with extraordinary Revelation, thus providing us with a crucial understanding of not only how much love the Master of the Heart brings into the world but how much sorrow He encounters in doing so. That is the meaning of story-telling here. Reflectioned in His own chosen Personality as a Western man Heart-Master Da confronts precisely the depth of exile and pain present in all of our experiences. Here we have the incredible tale of a Teacher Who so loved His Disciples that not only did He chose an Incarnation in the West to meet them but when His Disciples would not adopt His Form, He adopted their Form to show them their own reflection. The result of this sacrificial effort was His Divine Emergence, which marks a new chapter in epochal Spiritual History. excepts fron Foreword by Richard Grossinger

Bernard Mayes is a visionary. Escaping God's Closet is a book of startling scale, as it is more than an autobiography. It's a thesis on what existence means, with Mayes's life presented as the evidence. Everything is connected, we are all mutually interdependent...and we must all escape "God's closet" in order to form the ties that bind and ultimately help us to survive.

Scholarly Without Being Overwhelming....
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.

Ryrie, perhaps best known for the Ryrie Study Bible, has here written a verse-by-verse Revelation commentary noteworthy for being sufficiently detailed and scripturally sound without being too overwhelming for the average layperson. For readers with a mindset to study but little or no background in Revelation, I recommend this solid commentary. Also, this updated edition has quite a few helpful charts. If after this book more depth is desired, try other dispensational commentaries such as those of Walvoord, Thomas, Couch (ed.), or Newell. (For those familiar with eschatology lingo, if you are a preterist, historicist, or postrib premillenialist in your endtimes interpretation, you will not like this book, since it is written from a pre-trib, pre-millenialist viewpoint.)
