At over for feet high, the finished building is one of my prized possessions. I found mine at a flea market and, as the book was old, the center crease in the pages needs particular attention to avoid a pronounced ridge at about the fortieth floor. Reinforce the crease from behind and press it flat and it should come out ok. The addition of some foil trim at the top make for a really sharp model of the landmark.

A MUST HAVE FOR AVID CRAFT-LOVERS!

Dan Gallery has captured the less seen side of military service - the people in uniform living their day to day lives. This book is a real gem for its humor and playfullness. A great read. Having been one, I couldn't stop laughing at the antics of American sailors.

The instructions are excellent, all of the templates are included, and the end results are attractive & unique. You don't have to be an exceptional artist to make these cards, and basic supplies (rubber cement, scissors, & colored paper) can be used for all of the patterns. You can also easily vary the designs with different patterns/types of paper or add that extra touch with lettering. The cards can be used for all occasions or no occasion, and cover all four seasons and major holidays. A wonderful addition to any library--I would recommend it for all skill levels.

I have made about half of the cards in this book at least once since I bought it in January, and I look forward to making some more. In fact, I just finished making all of my Christmas and Hanukkah cards from patterns in this book, and they came out pretty well. Most of the patterns lend themselves to personal touches, which keeps things interesting and allows you to get more mileage out of them.
I do, however, recommend a light box for making these cards. I got a cheap one for about $10. The light box gives you two advantages: one, you don't have to cut up your xerox copies of the patterns, which prevents you from losing the little pieces. Two, it's much easier to line up the placement of cutting lines, embellishments and the like.
The only complaint I have about this book is that some of the cards come out a little small. To remedy this, I set the copier to an enlargement setting, resulting in larger patterns.
I look forward to getting much more use out of this book!

We bought this cathedral for a school project in Dec. 2005. My son's 6th grade teacher assigned the Notre Dame Cath. to him. We heard you could use a model kit... We thought we were on easy street. HA!!! This thing was a monster, but after a while , it kinda became a good monster. We spent some time together in the evenings cutting, glueing and talking. I believe it has some Good Karma, But now we don't have room to display it. It's for sale, here at Amazon .com(9-18-2006}
I have done some wood working, built a kayak, iceboats and scale model ships. This was the first "card stock" I've done. The book comes with a fold out floor plan that you assemble the cathedral on. On the reverse side of it are pix of stages of construction. I took digital pictures of the reverse side for later referense. Because I wanted to glue the floor plan to a flat foam board, for a firm stable base to build on. Then after cutting and triing to assemble the first stage inner walls, I decided to cut foam board to line this whole assembly. With the added support, it was easy to keep things square so all exterior pieces fit nicely. We did not quite finish, there are the highest flying buttresses and some arch detail to complete. I believe we have 80 man hous into this piece. Email me if you have question or want to see the digital pix. Bob G.

you'll run, not walk to buy this model. It is very well designed and easy to understand. Construction takes a bit of patience, but you won't mind as you watch the Gothic spires and buttresses take shape as the Cathedral rises before you. We made a pilgrimage to Chartres after the September attacks and found solace in this very pure Gothic wonder. The book has nice black and white photos, and of course, the glorious 13th century stained glass is not represented well, but a visit to Chartres itself would fix that.

Wonderful!

This model kit is absolutely fantastic! It is a very involved, accurate portrayal of the cathedral. I have an interest in Art History, and have always had a soft spot for Chartres. When I saw this model I just had to have it! It is a fairly complex model with many detail pieces. Sturdy paper board. Overall, worth the money! Not a weekend project. This is a long term hobby! I just love mine.

Just like Judy Garland, I fell in love with Clark Gable when I, too, realized that he was "the nicest fella in the movies." And I'm sure that Judy would also fall in love with Tom Tierney's brilliant homage to our hero, Clark Gable Paper Dolls in Full Color.

This is a gorgeous collection -- a tribute to Gable's career and the author's amazing talents. This book belongs in your collection.

Mr. Fricke's work, coupled with unparalleled data compiled by the late Douglas B. Ball, PH.D., represents the most comprehensive, informative and sorely needed reference relative to CSA paper money ever assembled. This book takes the collecting of CSA paper money to an entirely new, lofty level and is a must have for everyone--from the beginning collector to the most advanced. Obscure, priceless information, heretofore available only to a few, is now available to everyone...as it is set forth in vivid detail within these pages. Easy to use...a tremendous step forward to all of numismatics. Simply magnificant. Randy Shipley

Replaces and upgrades the 20th century Criswell series with a modern variety numbering system, grading, prices, new ways to collect, and a detailed history, census, provenance, rarity and pricing guide unparallelled in the paper money hobby. If you spend more than $200 on Confederate paper money or have a collection of more than a couple of notes, this book will pay for itself - perhaps many, many times over. Differentiate your collection by attributing with PF numbers which indicate better quality attribution, grading and value. This is the book some dealers do not want YOU to have!

Predictions which Came True from a Lost American Genius
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-20
I first read this book in 1982 when its optimism seemed questionable, if not preposterous. Now, almost 20 years later, through good (then) and bad (now) administrations, Kahn's predictions proved astonishingly accurate. They contrast markedly and tellingly with the gloom and doom pronounced by a lot of people who are still around and still misstating the present and future (did you hear that Al?). Herman Kahn is said to have achieved the highest score ever on military standardized tests during his youth in the 1940's and he was undoubtedly one of the few American geniuses of my lifetime. The Hudson Institute lives on as his legacy, but it has never quite lived up to his own level of excellence. The great reason to look for a copy of this book long out of print is to consider the premises and rationale and compare them to the prognostications from the greens and others on the left. No one can tell the future and probably few if any even approach the intellectual prowress of a Herman Kahn, but a review of the methodology of genius (and that of the chicken littles) ought to go a long way in defining where to place our trust and where to assign our skepticism.

As Mr. Kerwick says

Review Date: 2000-08-21
I too read this book in 1982 and from time to time have thought about it over the years. Now in the year 2000 I find myself fairly stunned at how accurately Kahn predicted the future. Books about the future were common in the 70's and 80's, Future Shock, Club of Rome, Greening of America and so on, but none so clearly predicted the world we have today.

Mr. Kerwick has said it better than I can. If the book is out of print, try looking in zShops, there is a copy of it there now.

Timeless Look at How the Future Economy and Life Will Change
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-06
I have a first printing of this book which I first read in 1982. I recently decided to reread it to better understand how Herman Kahn's pioneering work on scenario development had held up over time. Based on understanding where it had worked well, I wanted to get insights into how to repeat his process.

Well, was I in for a surprise!

When I first read the book, I was overwhelmed by its optimism . . . coming on the heels the "Stagflation" following the Oil Shock in the 1970s. At that time, the stock market was about to make a major bottom, having fallen well below the highs of both 1966 and 1973. Treasury bonds were yielding 15 percent. Inflation was romping, and the economy wasn't. President Reagan had just been elected and taxes had been cut, but it hadn't seemed to help yet.

Since then, we have enjoyed an unprecedented prosperity with only one brief recession in 18 years. Yes, Mr. Kahn got it right.

But what was astonishing was to read his specific predictions. For example, his description of future computer networks matches what we do on the Internet today very well. His descriptions of a worldwide plunge in adult female fertility in economically advanced countries were right on. His thoughts about government policy, how to fight inflation, and social adjustments that would help reduce inflation were all highly accurate.

How did he do this? Well, he used a combination of examining long-term trends (usually over centuries), determining the causes of these trends, and then considering scenarios for areas where individual action could make a difference. Most impressive.

For those who like Harry S. Dent, Jr.'s work (and I count myself among that group), Herman Kahn's book will be an important extension of that thinking.

Since Kahn used so many long-term causes in his thinking, the observations stand today. You just have to extend them a little more into the future on your own, now that Mr. Kahn is no longer with us.

I hope that his publishers will consider having someone do a new edition of this book that puts the track record beside the original, and thoughtfully extends the book into the next 20 years. It would be a most valuable resource.

Where else do we miss the big picture by looking at the ripples on the lake rather than the lake itself?

Identify and go with the irresistible forces!

Ok, I never heard of this book until I got it and thought it was one of those serious books. But when I was at the first story and Mrs. Peterkin did the first thing, I was thinking "What?" I reccomend this book to everyone! Even children. But be warned, you will die laughing!

This book is just adorable. It is a true joy to read. It can easily be read to younger children and they too will enjoy the humor in the situation. My five year old has laughed as we have read this book together.

The Peterkin's are a family who get into odd mishaps. They decide they need a library and after going to much trouble to get paper, make some ink and get ready to write a book for their library- the son can't think of what to write. The coffee has salt instead of sugar in it. After consulting the pharmacist, the chemist and more the lady from Philelphia suggests they make a new pot of coffee.

When I had the chance to grab a copy of this book, I did and I'm glad I did. We have enjoyed this book several times over.
Enjoy

This book is about a family who is always getting into the most ridiculous problems. One example is: Mrs. Peterkin, Elizabeth Eliza and the three boys all want to go for a ride, but the horse won't go! They try whipping it, giving it food and lightening the load, but to no avail. They ask the Lady from Philadelphia(whom they are always asking everything!) what they should do. She looks out and suggest that they untie the horse from the hitching post! This is just one of the many hilareous stories in this book. The Peterkin family is always getting stuck with problems, and the lady from Philelphia saves them again and again. This is a must read for anyone who can read!
