A Great Inspiration, support and Practical Tools for LifeReview Date: 2000-11-30
Yesterday I was feeling rather overwhelmed by everything that has happened this year, and rather angry, but without knowing how to deal with it. I picked up your book, read the relevant sections, did the exercises, and found myself laughing and playing silly card games with my family for the rest of the evening - having a wonderful time.
I am glad that you had the courage to follow your path, because by doing so you have inspired the courage in me to do the same.
Thank you Laurie,

touches on life's lessons and builds self esteemReview Date: 2007-05-05
This book touches on life's lessons and builds self esteem. How? By demonstration - the first fold makes a triangle from a square, by bringing the opposite points together. The author encourages "think of two of your good points and bring them together." In this gentle affirming way the reader/participant is learning not just a relaxing, satisfying art, but is learning about herself as well.
Mary Chloe Schoolcraft Saunders served for eleven years as an elementary school speech-language pathologist where she used origami to foster the development of speech. Fold and tell is a proven training method of this art but it also serves as a means of helping children to open up and communicate. My young daughter loves the book, the art and the process, as I am sure you will. The illustrations are beautiful and rich, while the diagrams are precise and clear. A wonderful addition to any educators, troop leaders or your own personal library.
folding, flapping, and flyingReview Date: 2000-06-04
Mary Saunders uses the process of folding a flapping bird as a metaphor for the unfolding of life's journey and as a symbol of the unlimited possibilities in each of us. She continues the metaphor poetically in the directions for creating the flapping bird. "Think of two of your good points and bring them together" is the eloquent instruction to fold the paper in half.
The book is beautifully illustrated by Carla Mihelich. The diagrams clearly explain each step of the folding process. In the vibrant illustrations the bird emerges into magical, mythical landscapes and creatures guide and accompany it on its journey of becoming. As the author writes in the preface: "May you and the children in your world experience enduring moments of possibility as you fold the flapping bird and set it flying..."

The art of life unfoldedReview Date: 2002-06-03
I learned to fold the Origami paper crane when I was a teenager. It is something I have remembered all my life, and I have always enjoyed showing someone how to make one, or taken delight in seeing the happiness in a child's eyes as the piece of paper turned into a graceful bird.
Spread Your Wings and Fly is a positive affirmation book that you read as you learn to fold your paper crane. The beginning of the book discusses how the author learned to fold the crane and there is even a little history of the art of origami. She also discusses how to use the book and achieving the end result, a flapping version of the paper crane.
But it was getting into the story, into the folding of the crane that really grabbed me. The crane can be a difficult feat if not shown by someone who can patiently teach the art. Ms. Saunders has the pictures of folding the crane broken down into the easiest and most basic way of folding. I followed through, page by page, fold by fold, and while it is a little different than the way I was taught, I had no problem following and achieving a proper and working crane.
Then I went back and read the story. Each fold has a purpose in making the final product. Each time you fold, you are presented with a fold that life can offer you. Sometimes the fold can resemble the shape the paper has taken, sometimes there is a ripple in the fold. While a fold can remind you of a mountain, the mountain can be a big dream or it can be a small one. As you flatten the mountain out, you are reminded that dreams can be squashed also. Wonderful visuals to accompany the process of making the crane, to discovering the folds in your own life, and finally flying free with the finished crane, no matter how life folds for you.
This is beautifully written, well explained, and to top it all off, there are the excellent illustrations, quality print on glossy paper, all of which only compliments the entire work. Together, Ms. Saunders and Ms. Mihelich have given us a book that will provide parents and children with some quality time and some insightful mini-meditations for both of them. Or, if used by a child alone, it is time this child will spend exploring him/her self.

You will be surprised at what you can easily achieve. I was !Review Date: 2005-12-21
The designs and instructions are easy to follow and supported by great step by step photos that clearly illustrate what the text says. The majority of the cards are easily achievable and some cards, such as the hidden message and pocket present, would be ideal for mass-producing for party invites, birth aanouncement etc.
Sue Nicholson starts off with a section that explores basic tools, supplies, tips and short cuts. This is extremely informative and easy to read.
She includes projects from beginner level through to the more advanced. Having said that the construction of the majority of designs is straightforward, so just follow the steps and prepare to be amazed at what you can produce!
The card decoration includes stamping, stickers, photos and ready made embellishments. All main cards have variations and some of Sue's "try this" ideas are inspirational.
There is a clean, bright airy feel to the layout of the book and this reflects Sues style.
Finally, a particulary innovative idea has been to include a Kids Korner. Great for help to adapt the designs for kids of all ages. A great benefit for parents of crafty children!
Recommended for card crafters that are looking for enjoyable, fun projects as a move away from a basic side folding card.

This is an EXCELLENT book. All the ideas are great, and the cards really lovely to look at. There are lots of ideas to adapt the cards and even younger children can do some of the designs with good results.
And I had a query, contacted Sue, (her em address is in the book), and she got back to me in 48 hours with her suggestion! WOW! I have since made several Christmas starburst cards and received lots of compliments.
First-rate! A must!

The book is well done, has lots of ideas and explains each creation very well. It's a big book and well worth the money. I bought the Quick and Clever Handmade Cards book along with this, it's not done as well and has less ideas and doesn't explain well either.
If you like variety and something different, but easy to do, I highly recommend this book!

Diane Maurer-Mathison is an old hand at marbling and she shares all her wisdom here. She starts with the easiest marbling techniques and moves into patterns that would challenge a master.
Not only does she tell you where to buy the tools you need she includes detailed instructions on how to make your own tools and grind your own pigments.
She even tells you how to marble fabric, your sneakers, wood, and anything else that will stand still.
And the colored illustrations are breathtaking! I opened the book in front of a friend and her daughters. We oohhed and aahhed over it for a good twenty minutes. It is truely inspiring.
Someone put a lot of time and effort into making this a clear and easy to use guide. I reccomend it highly.

A vindication of the rights of womanReview Date: 2007-05-07
It's hard to think that one would read any regency romances without also reading this book.
First FeministReview Date: 2006-12-15
Armed with this information, Wollstonecraft set out to propose in her book A Vindication of the Rights of Women the idea, that equal education for women was the only remedy for this grave injustice perpetrated against them, and education for women would actually strengthen the institution of marriage. She made several prescient arguments to support this idea. First, Wollstonecraft believed schoolchildren needed the contact and interaction with other schoolchildren to develop properly. So, she argued against Britain's system of elitist education, especially its private schools and boarding schools. She advocated for the creation of national public schools, funded by the state, and attended by children from the entire socio-economic strata. Second, she thought it was imperative that both boys and girls must be educated together. The reason Wollstonecraft believed in coeducation, was that when both boys and girls get to know one another from an early age they would in turn, build friendships, and learn to respect one another. Therefore, when women get married, they will be able to serve as companions to their husbands and not just as trophy wives or sexual objects. "Nay, marriage will never be held sacred till women, by being brought up with men, are prepared to be their companions rather than their mistresses." Third, Wollstonecraft asked the question, how society could expect mothers to rear healthy boys capable of functioning as confident and productive men in society if their mothers, who raised them, were uneducated. She was horrified to think of the damage already done to children by uneducated, weak-minded mothers. Wollstonecraft articulates in beautiful fashion her argument for the need to educate women in the following quote. "If marriage be the cement of society, mankind should all be educated after the same model, or the intercourse of the sexes will never deserve the name of fellowship, nor will women ever fulfill the peculiar duties of their sex." This argument only enhances women's roles as wives and mothers. Finally, Wollstonecraft argued that the implementation of her educational reforms would prove to be a key element leading to the improvement of the institution of marriage in particular, and for family life in general. "Contending for the rights of women, my main argument is built on this simple principle, that if she be not prepared by education to become the companion of man, she will stop the progress of knowledge and virtue."
Recommended reading for anyone interested in history, psychology, philosophy, and feminism.

FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN FORCED TO READ THISReview Date: 2001-08-03
It's interesting and well writen. Some of the language and nearly all of the issues that are brought up are inflamatory. In class discussions I compared the book to "Fight Club," and was nearly laughed out of the room, but I am at least partly serious. It does have the edge of a social visionary who wanted to shake things up and blow old fashioned society out of the water. No soap bombs, though, but that's only a technicality.
If you have any choice in the matter I would suggest that you choose this book over stuffier works by less forward thinkers. I swear that reading it won't hurt that badly.
Have we really progressed?Review Date: 2000-03-09
Mary discusses how women are to be kept ignorant of all knowledge and only to be valued for their physical charms (almost every ad on TV/in print). The examples of her contemporaries that she quotes are frighteningly familiar.
Why is this so? Who determines that the education of females is not relevant to society. Sure they are allowed to go to school now, but they are still treated with amazing patronization and condescenscion? The amount of my (intelligent) female friends that insist they are dumb/ignorant/stupid/an idiot is disturbing. Maybe now females are allowed to learn, they should also be allowed self esteem.
I think I got sidetracked. This book is a complex and well written argument for the emancipation and education of women. It is as true today as much as it was 200 years ago. It is, however a slow read as the language is couched in the vocabulary of the late eighteenth century and many of the terms are unfamiliar.
