The book God's Smuggler is, (and I hate to use this word loosely as it is overused) awesome in the respect that God answered him so many times directly. His answers were direct miracles from God. It is also amazing to read how he managed to get in and out of Russia so many times unscathed. Great reading.

All 'Round Book for BeginnersReview Date: 2007-07-03
There is enough information on the basics to get a beginner started. How to handle clay, storage, baking, and differences in products.
There is such a variety of techniques and projects that you're sure to find some you're not interested in as well as a LOT that you love.
Most of the other books I've found on Polymer clay specialize on specific uses. This one shows the range of things that are possible, and how to do them.
This will get a beginner started and give you ideas to get started in your own direction.

Changing the world one relationship at a timeReview Date: 2008-04-16
Even if you decide not to do the assignments in part II I suggest you at least read them. They can provide additional insight.
If you want to get a deeper idea of how your family system may have influenced your current relationships then make it a double feature and read "Broken Toys Broken Dreams" by Terry Kellogg, which you can also find on his website http://www.liferesources.com/tinfo.html
Another good book is "Bradshaw On: The Family" by John Bradshaw.
These books dovetail nicely with "Conscious Loving".

The lame guy who gave it to me changed my life foreverReview Date: 2008-02-26
This book changed ME. I've been applying it's principles all these years - not just to romantic relationships, but to family, work, and everybody else. It not only freakin' works, but it will bring more personal joy to you IN GENERAL.
The only regrets in the last ten-plus years has been the times I've forgotten these principles.
They (Gay and Kathleen Hendricks) laid out the core of this book on their website, which I discovered today (when I sent the URL to the...guy..), and it pretty much is the book in a nutshell. Look under "about". www.hendricksinsitute.com. Thank you Gay and Kathleen!
If you're far from the place they're asking you to be, you're not going to get it just from the web page. If you're searching and close, however, you'll get it right away - it's like epiphany after epiphany. In re-reading them, I was surprised at how many of the 7 Principles I have been applying (somewhat imperfectly) to this day.
There are a bunch of exercises in the second half of the book, but that's never been my thing. If you're more of a kinesthetic (experience) learner, though, get the book because the exercises looked pretty good (I guess).
Heavens, I don't know what else to say - except that this book and The Road Less Traveled are the only self-help/psychology books that I didn't think WEREN'T just a smattering of dressed-up common sense, padding, and bull.
Nina
PS:I know this is my first review. I swear I'm not a shill. In retrospect, I like a couple of other books, too like Bradshaw On: The Family: A New Way of Creating Solid Self-Esteem (I forgot that John Bradshaw wrote the intro to this book - I've known about THAT book for almost TWENTY years). But those are the top two.

Awesome Insight into the mind and heart of a criminalReview Date: 2008-09-11
But he is haunted by feelings of guilt and paranoia. His faithful friends and family are unaware of his heinous crimes. They shower the sickly Raskolnikov with unconditional love and acceptance, and it makes him even sicker with guilt. He can hardly keep from discussing the crimes with others, and it rouses the suspicions of the police.
The book is more or less a commentary on Psalm 32, with its timeless expression of guilt and release. It is also a commentary on the Lazarus story of John chapter 11 from the New Testament.
The book puts you inside the mind and heart of a criminal, and it will stay with you long after the last page is read. One of the greatest books of all time.

Masterful work, worthy of every accolade it's received, and worthy of accolades it has yet to receive....Review Date: 2008-08-20
Is this damn thing any good? Uh, yeah.
Fyodor's novel is called one of the greatest ever written for a reason. It is a masterful work, filled with suspense, fascinating characters, great atmosphere, intelligent dialogue, twists and turns, and a great, satisfying ending. It is a true cerebral novel, one that really emulates Dostoyevsky's outlook on life and art itself. Raskolnikov is one of the most fascinating, well known characters in all of literature, and even to this day, he is still talked about and discussed. This book, along with Notes from the Underground, are my favorite Dostoyevsky novels.
I also love this book because it shreds the idea of Nietzsche's "superman" ideal. Many have grossly misinterpreted Dostoyevsky's attitude towards Raskolnikov. Some make the argument that he is a model of the Nietzschian superman. Raskolnikov certainly acts like the "superman", thinking that since he has a superior intellect that that entitles him to, essentially, shred off the chains of the morality that governs others, and that he is free to do what he wishes, as the laws of "lesser men" don't apply to him. Fyodor, however, does not agree with this and shows that it is a false assumption that intelligent people make when they believe they are superior to anyone. We can argue the wider point that the Nietzschian superman isn't a superman at all, but an arrogant, deluded man who puts himself above everyone because he believes he is superior to everyone. Raskolnikov is exactly like this, until reality and Sonia make him realise that he isn't the Superman at all, just another human being, and a deeply human one at that. I believe many people who interpret Dostoyevsky as "pro-Superman" (in the Nietzsche sense, not the Marvel Comics one) are simply putting their own personal beliefs on Dostoyevsky's prose, and are not looking at the novel with clear and thoughtful eyes.
This is a wonderful novel, one of the greatest ever written, and one that can be revisited again and again.
Oh how savagely I would make love to this book if it was a woman because it would be a very beutiful nymph...yesReview Date: 2006-06-02
Not since finishing On the Road can I say that I have read a better novel.
It was like a pathetic escape from life when I followed all of these facinating characters around Dostoevsky's St. Petersburg.
Without a doubt, my favorite part of the book was at the beginning when Raskolnikov wandered into a bar and met Marmeladov, the hopeless, yet loveble drunk who is kind of the Micawber of the story if we may compare this monumental work of fiction with an obviously inferior one. Marmeladov just gives Raskolnikov his life story and talkes about his alcohol addiction and how it harms his wife and children. What really struck me the first time I read that part was Marmeladov's eloquence in saying how much he was ashamed of himself and sorry for putting his family through such pain. Then he says that meek ones like him on the last day shall be redeemed.
What we have at that part is the most beautiful part in world literature. It hit a bullseye with me and this simple scene of the drunkard's dignity is just the welcome Dostoevsky gives the reader. I love the friendship between Marmeladov and Raskolnikov and the depth of the character of Raskolnikov is simply astounding. It is just the epoch of psychological characterization.
The philosophy Marmeladov lays down to Raskolnikov at the beginning, salvation, redemption through suffering is very powerful (and true). We all have a cross to bear, especially Dostoevsky when he was writing this incredible work of fiction. It makes one romantically picture the great prophet slaving over this masterpiece with only a candle to light his writing in that beautiful language of Russian and finally finishing it and probably using the first pay to gamble.
I love you friend Fyodor Mikhailovich
and I love your novel.
I hath spoken to my friend...ECCE HOMO.
Crime and PunishmentReview Date: 2007-03-09
This is probably the best fictional study of the effects of guilt and radical ideas on a troubled mind. The prose is flowing, and it's not hard to see why Dostoevsky considered his novels "poems".
Dostoevsky's works in general are marred by a flaw I prefer to ignore as much as I can, and in this novel it is hardly present. Dostoesky's politics are odious, his nationalism, anti-Semitism, and anti-Polish sentiments absolutely ruined a section of The Brothers Karamazov for me and in The Gambler I felt their effect dramatically. They only crop up once in Crime and Punishment, that is when (plot spoiler coming soon) Svidrigailov is about to shoot himself, when Dostoevsky describes the Jewish guard as having "that sour look common to all members of that tribe", or something very close to those words.
All in all, I feel that Dostoevsky's politics can be excused, and prefer to focus on the positive attributes of his writing. There are many, and it isn't difficult.

Energizing and EnlighteningReview Date: 2007-05-31
This audio book is easily listened to in 9 hours, while driving in rush hour traffic on your way to work, but be forewarned that Caroline Myss is not joking around when she embodies the teacher's archetype. What was once a mundane rush hour drive will turn into a vibrant interaction of the energy paradigm. She will teach you and if you are at all a skeptic like I was (esp. about Chakras and unseen mysteries), thinking that you've got the world materialistically figured out, and your reality beat, then you are in for a sharp and exciting surprise. You may find yourself sliding down the rabbit hole of "Who am I? and "Why am I doing this?" and "What is the purpose of my life?" and "Where am I, now?"
These types of awareness-based questions are implied throughout her tales and experiences with anatomy of our body's energy systems. Thankfully, with insight, clarity and precision, Dr. Myss explains exactly what we are made of and it is very reassuring to know that when we do start to ask these questions of a deeper nature, there are guides like Caroline Myss who are brave enough to teach the stuff.

Protect Yourself!Review Date: 2008-10-04
Thank God they had gunsReview Date: 2008-10-01
This is a book of stunning accounts wherein ordinary people protected themselves from assault, for the simple reason that they had a firearm on hand with which to defend themsevles.
Stories such as these, wherein ordinary people defend themselves against criminal violence do not receive much attention in the media. Their stories do not always appear in print or in news accounts. Nonetheless, many Americans do protect themselves and their loved ones on a regular basis. Ordinary people, in their homes and places of business, subjected to criminal attacks, do not always suffer injury and death, if they have the will to survive, and a firearm in their grasp. The unarmed however, are not so fortunate. They become statistics, and end up in the morgue or the hospital on many occasions.
The author is very experienced in the use of handguns and makes his living as a shooting instructor.
Most people, with no criminal background, can purchase a firearm for self defense. The background check takes between 20 minutes to 1 hour generally. After which time, you can leave the store with the means to protect yourself. That, and some affordable self-defense classes in firearms saftey and uses, can make the difference between living and dying, or going through life with nightmares for memories.
A very good and informative read for those who desire to educate themselves regarding the facts of firearms possession. Whether renter, housewife and mother, businessman, or just plain folks, this book is very useful.
