My kids loved this book and thought the body part names were hilarious. My daughter asked me to read it to her three times the first day we got it. She took it to school the same week and had her teacher read it to the class. They all wanted to make the acorn dinkleworms. One of the best things about it is the promotion of good character in children.

I'm glad to have Deborah's book in my library to read to my granddaughter. The author doesn't talk down to children. The kids in my class laughed out loud at the funny names for body parts and did not miss the message of standing up to bullies in the right way. Thumbs up!

Having hunted with Dalton and shared the life on the hunt with him, this book is no exageration as to the skills necessary for the Bear Hunter to possess. Dalton writes as he speaks, a straight and factual dialogue of a successful hunter. He is a Master of the wild and hero to America.

Wow! I could not put this book down! The author tells the tales in such great, vivid detail that he really puts you in the story! The wealth of knowledge gained from reading this book is awesome. Any bear enthusiast/hunter will greatly appreciate the honesty and bluntness spoken here. With good solid info on rifle calibers and ammunition and just straight common sense, this book gets the big thumbs up!

Too many books on hunting deer...not enough on bears. This is one of the few good bear books. It stands up there with Ben Easton's classic "Bears." Great hunting adventures with lots of good info for the aspiring bear hunter, like myself. To me, bears are the ultimate North American game, and Mr. Carr has produced an excellent source of both anecdotes and information.

Even if you are a long time bear hunter, you will soon realize upon reading this book that Dalton Carr knows more about bear hunting than you do. Having taken 179 bears, this fellow has learned a few things about how do do it, and how to do it safely. His stories make for some memorable reading too.

One word of caution. If you hunt bear with muzzleloader or bow, you might not want to read this book just before heading into the woods. I just made this mistake and for the first time, I may bring a "back-up piece", juuuust in case.......

Dalton Carr draws upon his forty-one years of experience as a black bear hunter, predator controller on the Yakima Indian Reservation in Washington State, marshal of Red River in Colorado (where he killed "bad" bears); and a sport bear hunter in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and Wyoming to write Tales Of A Bear Hunter. Dalton never used traps and dogs, but preferred to stalk his bears with a rifle and an tracking ability honed by his many years in law enforcement. Dalton shares with the reader more than wonderful stories and anecdotes of bear hunting as he reveals what to look for when tracking bear, why bear charges happen, what the best bullets and calibers are to use on bear, the best places to shoot a bear to deliver a killing shot, as well as safety issues when hunting bear. Tales Of A Bear Hunter is very highly recommended reading for anyone who has ever aspired to hunting bear with camera or with rifle, as well those with a keen interest in the rugged and demanding sport of hunting big game.

It helps immensely to have travelled to the Navajo Nation when reading this story. I found that I had minor interest in the developing family story, compared to the lore and myth of the SW Native Americans. If you've travelled to the SW and are familiar with horses, you'll love this book.

A wonderful read, both encouraging and disheartening, with some real family values thrown in. A graphic, first-hand description of the way things were and are, and might be. Mr. Preston provides many enduring messages about the sanctity of life and living that the Bilagaana have nearly completely lost in our rush of subservience to the technology god.

This book and its predecessor, Cities of Gold, chronicle the amazing, arduous, foolhardy, inspired journeys of a "yankee" in search of the traces of cultures his own people have nearly annihilated. Unlike many memoirists, Preston doesn't shrink from chronicling his own failures and misjudgments, and that's what makes him so accessible to the people he meets along the way, and to the reader him or herself. Most of us will probably never have the guts to make these journeys or get to know all these people - that's what makes this book such a radical act of anti-tourism. Above all it's a poignant homage to "the people." (They know who they are!) If you're a horse person, a traveler to the southwest, or if you're just interested in the question "what is American?" you have to read these books now. And don't miss the great story about the skinwalkers - it's enough to keep you cold in July.

David Marx's novel, though brief, is a strong read. From the shocking circumstances that devastate a family to the ending whose outcome is never certain until the final paragraphs, Three Eighty-One moves along with verve and intensity. Marx takes us into the world of a San Francisco cabbie, more benign, perhaps, than Scorsese "Taxi Driver," but never less interesting. Marx renders this world with a light touch, giving us an evocative landscape. What also works well is the layered psychology of the protagonist Trevor. He's a man who had it all and loses it. He forces himself to undergo a kind of cleansing and journey with echoes of the mythic before he can restore himself to his place in the world.

Three Eighty-One takes us to the dark side of the Golden City. All too real -- you feel like you are sitting in the passenger seat as the cab driver takes you through a journey into the underbelly of the City. The protagonist -- a cab driver who dresses all in black -- is a very dark character himself and not always likable. With each twist and turn of the steering wheel, you're waiting for him to redeem himself.

Marx lends his own creative, wry and dark humor to the story of a man caught between two worlds. Forget Robert DeNiro, meet Trevor, this decade's favorite cabbie. He's a good guy made unlucky by fate, and the assortment of characters he meets along his road of woe kept me up to the wee hours of the night. Kudos to Marx for driving us into the twilight.

Best Book on Happiness

Review Date: 2003-07-13
Kaufman explains in clear and simple language how we come to acquire beliefs that can undermine our happiness and effectiveness. Remarkably, these beliefs were taught and adopted with the best of intentions, to protect and guide us. When we lack the necessary awareness, though, we can not see the harm these beliefs do in our lives.

Kaufman introduces a set of attitudes to consider along with a simple system of inquiry which he calls the Option Process. He presents many actual dialogues he has had using the Option Process with a variety of individuals beset by a wide range of serious challenges. The dialogues are a powerful way of identifying beliefs which do not serve us, or upon conscious examination, do not seem to make sense. In reading through these dialogues, I was amazed at how quickly many of these individuals were able to emerge from their stuck states, let go of beliefs that did not serve them, and move on to more constructive perspectives and actions. While participants no doubt benefited from Kaufman's questions, the process can also be practiced on one's own.

Even though this book was written a number of years ago (1977), it in no way comes across as dated. In a number of respects, it reminds me of the process subsequently and independently developed by Byron Katie known as the Work. For this reader, though, the Option Process is much more accessible and straightforward.

Every part was helpful. The explanations gave me the background to understand the new ideas. The dialogue sections were easy and fun to read, and made each section crystal clear. The part I liked best, however, was the lists of "unhappy" beliefs that many people hold. I found many of my own beliefs on those lists and chose to change them. This one is my favorite of Kaufman's books.

After reading the true story of an abused survivor I felt as if I had been stabbed in the gut. "To Save One" by Theresa (Trudy) Magliano details the life of a family at the mercy of a father from hell... abuse in all forms were all the kids knew as "family life." The author writes exceptionally well and gives the reader a bird's eye view of the horror that was her life...and yet she leaves the reader with hope that if a person can let go of that horror they may be able to heal and be the person they were always meant to be...Outstanding must read! BRAVO!

What would you do if your father beat and sexually abused you? Being thrown against a wall with his strong arms around your neck. Being forced to do things no child should have to do. Being beaten for stating home from school when you are legitimately ill. He did the same to your brothers and sisters and your mother was oblivious. What if for the longest time you didn't even realize that there was anything wrong with what your father did?
To many people, this image is one that only happens in the movies, or in books. But for Theresa (Trudy) Magliano, this was an all too real reality. In her book, "To Save One" Trudy bravely describes her experiences of living with an abusive father. Her words are brutal but they tell the truth. A truth that not many speak of but one that needs to be heard. I highly recommend this book to everyone so that we might "save one."

Theresa Magliano gives a true, heart wrenching story of a childhood infested with physical, sexual, emotional, and mental abuse by her father. Trudy, her brothers, sisters and cousins suffered at the hands of this man while disaffected motherhood encouraged his abuse. In this humanity-at-its-worst book, you will find the heart of a true survivor who not only had to save herself but took on the responsibility and guilt of trying to save her siblings. Ms. Magliano is a hero, and resources for child abuse hotlines as well as web sites are found in her book in order to help the reader to save, at the very least, one.

To Save One tells the author's story of struggling with life while growing up with an abusive father. Theresa Magliano openly and honestly depicts the horrifying occurrences of her childhood and overcoming all obstacles she met with. Never have I read a book by such a courageous author, coming forth with her story to help victims of child abuse know that they are not alone. The author connects with the reader on a personal basis, making it feel as if she wrote the story for your eyes alone. I could not put this book down. I had to find out how the author went from such a disturbing and traumatic childhood to being able to write all the pain down and share it with the world. An overall uplifting novel of survival, maintaining your sanity in the most dire of situations, and having the strength to face tomorrow. Definitely not a book to be passed up. ~~ Laura Pfalz, author of "Going Down Memory Lane"

TO SAVE ONE is an honest, upfront journey into the insidious world of child abuse. New author, Theresa Magliano, shares her life with readers. She grew up in a world that was the epitome of the dysfunctional family. Many readers will get an education on child abuse; many will relate all too easily.

Theresa didn't know that her life was not "normal" while growing up. It's a common side effect of abuse. It is the dirty little secret that nobody talks about. Her strong will to survive and overcome the poverty, low self-esteem, and guilt associated with physical, sexual, and mental abuse will have readers cheering quietly from the sidelines for her survival.

This story is often raw and graphic. I would not recommend it for readers that want to believe in the "Ozzie and Harriet" myth. But for readers that want to be more cognizant of a life that is lead by our smallest, most vulnerable victims, it is a must read! Understanding abuse, and recognizing the signs of it will make us a more compassionate society that will report suspected abuse and protect the children. Authors like Theresa Magliano and Dave Pelzer should be commended for sharing their stories. It is often painful, but the determination to survive and move forward is compelling. I could not put this book down. It is a fast paced, powerful read.

You can't really expect much from a tiny little book of only 64 pages, right? Well, if you believe that, then take a look at this little power-packed book of the expression of love. For me, this book serves several purposes. Loving thoughts and expressions for my wife, and as a Minister, I have found several passages here than can be altered slightly to fit quite nicely in wedding ceremonies.

The writing here is a good as anything I've read on the expression of love and Douglas Pagels and Blue Mountain books are both to be commended for this fine work. If you have difficulty finding the right words to express your love to that special someone in your life, this book will certainly guide you in the right direction. You'll find thoughts and poems that can easily be altered to fit your circumstances, or in many cases, presented verbatim.

If you think there are just no new ways to express love, think again.

Rupert Pratt's "Touching the Ancient One" is much more than an autobiographical account of surviving a horrific plane crash in the snowy, mountainous wilds of Alaska. It tells in skillful prose of personal growth, determination, and bonds of friendship and devotion that grow ever stronger over time. His long and ultimately successful search for other survivors and their kinfolk is most touching. This is an uplifting book about the wonders of the human spirit.

In myth, mountains represent "exposition, revelation and new learning." For Airman Rupert Pratt, that is what the plane crash on Mt. Kesugi, Alaska represented. First, the struggle to survive, then the ongoing search for how and why it all happened. Pratt keeps the reader riveted first, with the immediate survival issues. Then comes the search for comrades who survived. Much later, arises the soul's need to make sense of it all, and his search leads to many reunions and a vision of a greater role after retiring from teaching. Warning to readers: Be prepared to devote time to sharing Pratt's quest. In the midst of a project, I had to alot a full day to the book that is both suspenseful and inspiring. The author's adventure is heightened by his truthfulness and clarity of writing. Well done!

Review Date: 2006-05-07
At the genesis of Touching the Ancient One, I was only ten, but the author's description of six men surviving a plane crash that happened more than half a century ago, conjures memories of my own parents relating the incident at our kitchen table, just days after that tragic moment in February 1954.

I was saddened when he told about leaving his home in Salt Rock, West Virginia, to join the Air Force, since I, too, left the security of my own rural upbringing early one morning for similar reasons. A few chapters later, I grew tense when the plane he boarded in Alaska first began to shake. And then, when it broke apart over Kesugi Ridge and Rupert began freefalling, my muscles further tightened when he lost consciousness. In fact, his ability to create such anxiety drew me far enough into the scene that I lost track of who had actually authored the book. From that point on, I was hooked on Rupert's descriptive passages about the coldness and beauty of Alaska`s wilderness. In fact, his graphics often became quite similar to a story I used to read to my junior high students entitled, "To Build a Fire," by Jack London. And, too, his knowledge of the flora of the region and facts about the landscape reminded me of Jean M. Auel's The Clan of the Cave Bear.

In a recent Sunday church service, my pastor spoke, in essence, about, "What do we say to people who meet with adversity in their lives?" The subtopic of his message, "Does their incident of misfortune cause them to become bitter or better?" relates to Touching the Ancient One, for Rupert Pratt has become a stronger individual since that occurrence in Alaska so long ago. And, I think God specifically chose him as a catalyst to reunite the six survivors and their families with the loved ones of those who were killed. I further feel that God has used him to help all who were involved to find closure, thereby, becoming improved, more productive citizens in this seemingly uncaring world we live in today. Rupert had a profound affect indeed on all whose lives he touched during the course of reunification, and he will continue to influence others who read this story of tragedy and reunion in the years ahead.

Touching the Ancient One flows with the skill that comes only from a seasoned writer, and I shall not hesitate to read any book a second time that tugs at the tender spots of my heart as this one has managed to do. I am truly amazed at what Rupert has done with only twenty-six letters of the alphabet.

This book "Touching the Ancient One - a True Story of Tragedy and Reunion" could have been a very good book had the author Rupert Pratt just written about the crash, the survival and the rescue. However, he exceeds the ordinary telling of a tragic story and takes us into the present time for a reunion and follow-up on those who were touched by the events of February 5, 1954; and that makes for an outstanding book!

The event that brings all these lives together was a crash of an Air Force C-47 into a desolate mountain region of Alaska where six people miraculously escaped death and survived in freezing weather. The story is not just about the survivors but also those who come to rescue them. The glue that makes this story so interesting is the power of Pratt's writing. He takes the reader with him through his words and memories and creates an exciting true tale; it is brilliantly done and conceived.

This is truly one great book. This story is not just about a crash, it is about people. It is about how their reunion 42 years after the crash and the rescue, changes all of their lives once again. It is a most unusual life experience and one that the reader gets to share in an emotional sense. This is an epic story which has all the elements of what would make a great movie plot. It is entertaining, thoughtful, and almost spiritual in some ways.

A must read book! The MWSA gives this book FIVE STARS. It also receives this reviewer's personal endorsement!

This book was written from the heart of a young girl who now is living with bitter/sweet memories of a woman. We all make choices that turn our lives in different directions, but it's how we handle the consequences that define who we are.The ability to share our life story with others, takes a special person.Thank you Brenda for doing this.

I'm an outdoors person and have never sat down and read a book cover to cover till now. I did have to take a sleep break about midnight last night. Some of the events in the author's life carried me back to happy and awkward childhood and high school days. I think the author told a wonderful heart warming story that everyone ( especially teens ) should read and learn from. You never know what pain or regret's a person may be hiding behind a beautiful smile.

This is a wonderful book, sad and funny at the same time. I could not put it down from the very first page. It showcases what so many mothers have experienced.

This is truly the best crossword book that I have ever worked. Having the choice of easy or hard clues just made it so much fun. I often leave at least a few puzzles unfinished before tossing a book, but I finished every single word of every puzzle in this book. I also loved the paper quality in this book. Pencil erased very well from it, so it was easy to correct mistakes. The size and weight of the book also makes it a perfect travel companion. I would love to see more of these books released --- this was the best!!

This format is phenomenal!

The two-in-one format is brilliant. Does anyone know if Newgate has published other books like this? If so, please post here. And the puzzles are super-challenging. In both formats.
