On page 74 Rev. Ishii infers that Sadako was the 14th death that year (1955) in her jr. high school. This is not correct. It may mean 14th in Hiroshima that year but that does not sound correct either. Sadako's brother confirmed she was not the 14th death in her school that year.

Are you the type or reader who enjoys reading about real people who fight through tough situations? Well, then this book is for you to read. This wonderful book was about a girl named Sadako who got radiation from the atomic bomb in World War II when she was only two years old. Sadako really loved school and was on a Bamboo Relay Team at her school. She had a race and when she was running, she started to get dizzy. She went to the hospital and turns out, she got the Atomic Bomb Disease. Sadako was really scared to die at a young age of 12 years old. Her friend came to visit her in the hospital, and she told Sadako that if you fold 1000 paper cranes, you get a wish from the gods. That made Sadako determined to fold 1000 paper cranes.

When I was reading this book, I couldn't stop reading it. I really got to know the main character, Sadako, and I liked her a lot. She had a ton of hope, determination, and courage to fold one thousand paper cranes so she can get better. She's an example to all the children who has diseases or illnesses. This book was such a powerful and inspirational book to me.

I learned from this book that you can truly accomplish your goals and dreams when you are going through something really difficult. Sadako showed readers this. It made me realize that I really can do anything I put my mind on. So readers, if you are tempted to read this very inspirational book, go ahead. Read it!

The theme of the book is that war kills innocent people and dropping an atomic bomb is unconscionable act that must never be repeated. The author actually went to Japan and stayed with Sadako's family in order research this book. It is well written. This book supplements the Eleanor Coerr version of the story. It gives additional information about what Sadako's leukemia was like for her and her family.

...this is the kind of book that continues to haunt you long after you put it down. I read this book in elementary school and then stumbled across it as an adult - even re-reading it as an adult, I was shocked by the descriptions of the damage done by the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

This book is a must-read. As an American, I believe that the atom bomb was a necessary evil to stop World War II; however, as a human, I believe the atom bomb was a horrible atrocity unleashed on millions of people, including a child named Sadako whose story is poignantly told here. This book is an eye-opener, a heart-wrencher and a beautiful story.

A book everyone should read

No matter what side you are on in the debate on the use of the atomic bombs during WWII, this is a "must read". As a science teacher, I read this book to my Advanced Chemistry class at the conclusion of our nuclear chemistry unit. However, I have yet been able to read it through without crying. And I have not been alone. Sadako's story should teach us all a lesson. My students may not remember the specifics of chain reactions or nuclear decay. But I guaruntee that they will remember Sadako's story. I want them to be informed citizens who make educated choices. One thing that history has shown us is that it repeats itself. What a horrible thought.......that another little girl become a "Sadako". I would hate to think that next time her name might be an American one......It chills me to the bone.

We received One Tiny Turtle as part of an "undersea pack" assortment of books from Scholastic, and I wasn't prepared for what an excellent book it turns out to be. Packed with information about the lifecycle of loggerhead turtles, One Tiny Turtle is also graced with lush, dreamy paintings of the loggerhead's undersea world. The text is lyrical and challenging to my young reader ("pinprick nostrils" is one phrase that stood out), but clear and easy for her to follow. It's somewhere between a standard "kids read and find out" book and the kind of thoughtful nature writing you expect from the likes of Rachel Carson -- on a level that works well for kindergarten and young-elementary students.

Highly recommended!

There is so much information packed into this work that it is difficult to imagine how the author and illustrator pulled it off. This is the story of the life cycle of the loggerhead turtle. The illustrations are beautiful and actually quite accurate. The text is simple and very, very well done. It follows the illustrations perfectly and is just overflowing with good information. This book, while great for kids to read on their own (this is one of the more used books in our school library), it is also great to read to the class as a whole as it never fails to bring on good questions and good discussions (better know your turtles when faces with a bunch of third graders).

"Far, far out to sea, land is only a memory, and empty sky touches the water. Just beneath the surface is a tangle of weed and driftwood where tiny creatures cling. This is the nursery of a sea turtle" (p. 1-2).

Nicola Davies story of the life of the loggerhead sea turtle, combined with the outstanding illustrations of Jane Chapman, make this an entertaining book on sea turtles for children ages 3-7. The larger text focuses on the story of survival of one loggerhead, while smaller text provides more detailed information. The hardcover book is quite large, making it a great book for holding open and reading to a group of children.

This is one of the nicer books for very young people on sea turtles.

Minor issues:

"Sea turtles are great wanderers, traveling thousands of miles each year, often far from land." Many subadult and adult sea turtles go through periods where they just "hunker down" in their foraging and resting areas. The grand travels tend to be restricted to the times they visit their nesting areas (every 2-4 years) and when they are still growing in those first few "lost years" of pelagic foraging. Leatherbacks, of course, are a real exception, since they always seem to be traveling.

"Not much bigger than a bottle top..." (p. 8). Actually, a hatched loggerhead is never the size of a bottle top, and a growing loggerhead is much bigger. I think a better size reference could have been used here.

"Coming ashore is very risky for sea turtles - they can easily overheat and die. So they only nest at night or in cool weather" (p. 21). I agree coming ashore is risky. But the most important reason is probably avoidance of predation.

Hey, you can't cram everything into a book for young children! I'll use this one in the classroom.

My Favorite Book!

I like this story because it tells me a lot about loggerhead turtles. My favorite part about the story is the interesting fact that turtles cry. I never knew that! Turtles lay one to ten eggs, but at least five live. I learned that. They lay their eggs at night. I like this book because it is a wonderful story about turtles and I think everyone should read it.

Need I say more. As a wife(of a wonderful husband, Richard)for 22 years and a mother(of two wonderful teenage sons Emile and Tyrone)I can truly say that I have been blessed by having read this book. Once again I was reminded that when we put God in the centre of our marriage and our family and we stand on His word - then no matter what we go through - He will get us through.

While reading, I constantly stopped to share some of the thoughts, passages and stories with Richard and I mentioned to him that this book was definitely one that I was going to add to my list of best read books and it was also one that needed to be shared. As God would have it, shortly after I had finished reading the book, a friend told me about her son and daughter in law who are having struggles in their marriage and guess what -I found the first person whom I could share this wonderful bit of inspiration with.

Thank you so much, Eva Marie for your insight and all those who shared their lives with you so that you could give us this great collection of stories that we can use as a source of encouragement. Keep up the good work and God bless.

One True Vow: Love Stories of Faith and Commitment restores my faith in the institution of marriage. The individual stories in this book are not only entertaining, but heart wrenching as well. Many of these real-life couples have gone through trials and tribulations that most people couldn't even imagine. I found One True Vow a great read--a page turner--as I read each couple's true story of love and faith, along with discouragements, rejections, unfaithful spouses, deaths, empty nesters, rebellious teenagers in blended families, and how they overcame their difficulties and still remained married. I highly recommend One True Love for anyone married or thinking of getting married, and especially for those thinking of separation or divorce.

I met and spoke to Eva Marie Everson during a women's retreat and found her to be a loving, warm person who truly cares about people. She has a strong, Biblically-based faith in God and is a fabulous speaker. Her southern charm and humor will not only engage you and draw you into her stories, but she will make you feel totally comfortable and at home. I highly recommend Eva Marie for speaking engagements such as retreats, writers' seminars, church groups, men's and women's groups.

Are you wondering if you're ready for marriage?
Are you wondering what happens when the honeymoon's over?
Are you wondering if there's any hope?

Then you should check out this book. It is filled with such incredible stories (real-life accounts) of commitment and hope, and faith and love, when couples face adversity in their relationships.

What a blessing it was to read. Yes, there is hope -- the stories in this book clearly illustrate this fact.

It would be a great gift for young couples, newlyweds and those who have been married for years!

Enjoy!

We didn't realize the emotional impact that, "One True Vow" would have on us until we read it. We both cried. Eva wrote our story about my long term illness, just as if she'd been living here with us. We've truly been so blessed throughout the long, hard haul that it almost seems a dream that it's been so long. God has erased so many bad memories, but through it all, we hung onto Him. He was our source, as I'm sure he was each and everyone elses in, "One True Vow."

I'm so blessed that my husband took, "in sickness and in health serious." He's upheld our vows.

An excellent encourager to those doubting what God can do in their marriage. It should all start from the wedding day and meaning the vows we repeat to one another. Great gift for those intending to marry.
Be blessed,

Bobbi McGill
I pray this book will be used to God's glory.

The thing about Ant And Bee books, with their bright coloured illustrations and interesting characters, is that they don't seem like educational books but enjoyable stories which happen to involve numbers, letters, or colours. A POWERFUL AND ARRESTING NOVEL
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-15
Craig Trebilcock has written a powerful and arresting novel about the first year of the ongoing war in Iraq. Trebilcock was himself an officer in this war and his self-published book draws on personal experiences. An attorney in private life, Trebilcock served as a Civil Affairs officer, with nation-building experience in Bosnia and elsewhere, before his call-up for Iraq. The book suffers from the usual defects of a self-published venture, such as a need for copy editing by a disinterested pair of eyes.

But this novel is a reality check. It raises important questions about our nation's military deployment policies.

- Is it practical to turn to our Reservists and the National Guard for war making? Is the Guard trained for this role?
- Is it a breach of trust to assign Guardsmen and women overseas for extended tours?
- Is it fair to them and their families at home to place Reservists and Guardsmen and women not just in a war zone but as the troops who prosecute the war?

The implicit commitment America has made to our National Guard is this: you are under state supervision to respond to domestic emergencies on a short term basis.

- Is it a breach of faith to the Guard to impose a no-transfer no-resign policy 90 days before a deployment, and then assign the Guard to a war zone?
- Is it equitable or honest that the One Weekend a Month Reservists are lead t believe there is a two-year statutory limit on deployment, when in fact that limit is for each operation, not for total service? This means that overseas deployments can go on and on so long as the Pentagon designates each deployment a 'separate operation.'

Through compelling dialogue, the author gets at these questions.

"Anybody in the reserves better get ready to spend the next six years out of ten overseas protecting the empire," General Merdier tells a Sergeant. Any complaints will be dealt with harshly. "There is no room for freelancing and lack of resolve," the General says.

This novel reminded me of the war poetry of Siegfried Sassoon, a British soldier in WWI.

"Good-morning, good-morning," the General said
When we met him last week on our way to the line.
Now the soldiers he smiled at are most of them dead,
And we're cursing his staff for incompetent swine.
"He's a cheery old card," grunted Harry to Jack
As they slogged up to Arras with rifle and pack.
. . .
But he did for them both with his plan of attack."

One Weekend A Month is advertised as the first volume of a trilogy. Let's hope so and don't miss this first installment.

Craig Trebilcock has written an incisive, biting, unflinchingly honest tale that illuminates the real stories of our misadventure in Iraq. He should know: He spent most of a year there, and came home sobered to the promise vs. the realities.

You HAVE to read this book if you have interest in what our soldiers are experiencing in Iraq or what life is like for civilian Iraqis caught up in the war. The story follows the efforts of an eight man National Guard team trying to bring democracy to a bunch of Iraqi officials who aren't buying. It is funny, angry, and sad all at the same time. The author was apparently in Iraq and his knowledge of that culture and the frustrations of army life shine through. Should be required reading at the Pentagon!

This provocative account of the Iraq war calls into question the assumptions about the conflict that we hear every day from Washington - that democracy "is on the march"; that the Iraqis are really interested in reform; that we are doing more good than harm by staying in Iraq. It was a shocker from the very first page and I got so wrapped up in the story and its characters that I finished the entire book in two days. The author, who was a vet in the war, shows how the Iraqis and US soldiers really interact on a daily basis, with all the mistakes, misunderstandings, and humor that occurs when two such completely different cultures run into each other. The central story of how an army officer finds meaning in a no-win assignment by trying to help a sick Iraqi boy is compassionate and well presented. The last chapter choked me up. This book really opened my eyes and I highly recommend it to anyone who wonders "what the heck is really going on over there..."

The author has a way of making the ordinary and not-so-ordinary become completely magical, zany, and fun. He sure knows what appeals to boys - big fat bugs and plants that eat them, the scariest rollercoaster in the world. There's even a very funny caution against becoming a real TV zombie. This book is a wonderful combination of a love story set in a Christian tone. The reading is easy and very inspiring to read. The story line is well written. Each chapter leads into the plot of the next which makes the book hard to put down. Readers will want to know what Nick will be doing next. The romance in the book gives a gentlemen like image for Nick and leaves your imagination roaming to what could happen next for Nick and his love. I finished the book within a six hour period one snowy afternoon. I recommend the book highly for romance, history, and love of Christianity.

This book goes against the grain of the current mood of the Western world. Rather than viewing the Muslim world with fear and loathing, it focuses on a few individuals living their faith as written in the various scriptures and not as certain extremist leaders would have us live. Though it is set against the backdrop of the recent Balkan conflicts it could easily be set anywhere faiths collide. It's a good read and has a hopeful message.

As a history buff, I really enjoyed The One Year on This Day. There are plenty of places to find an "one this day in history" account, but having a devotional that ties the events to the hand of God (as if it could be any other way) is inspiring and thought provoking. For instance, July 30 was the day (in 1956) that "In God We Trust" became the national motto. In her devotional, Dianne Matthews encourages the reader to ponder whether America really does trust in God and shows us what that means by quoting David in Psalm 28:7. And on September 6 (the date when Google launched), Matthews talks about our need to search and ties it to searching the Scriptures for answers.

A creative twist on traditional devotionals. I highly recommend The One Year on This Day.

My husband is a pastor, I am a speaker/writer, two of my children have degrees in theology, and my son-in-law is going for his Master of Divinity degree. My husband and I do devotions daily and the kids usually visit and join in on the weekends. Finding a devotional that doesn't get picked to pieces has been an on-going battle. We usually only get a few lines in and someone detects incorrect theology or some-such-thing and they cry foul. We've thrown more than one devotional away. We love the On This Day devotional! It's been deemed spiritually/Biblically accurate by my breakfast nook panel of judges, the history is interesting, and it's well written. Bravo!

My kids loved this book as toddlers and now they like to "read" it to their much younger cousins. I firmly believe that One Yellow Lion helped them learn their numbers and how to count. I often give this book as a baby gift.

A book that everyone can 'READ'

I give this book as a gift to every 1 year old I know. It gets great reviews from both the parent and the child!
When my niece was 2 1/2 she love to "read" the book to me! My newphew took it to preschool on his 'show and tell' day... he wanted to show everyone he knew how to read.
It is a simple book... colors, counting, and animals (the illustrations are great).

I am a 61 year old grandmother and I still like this book. I bought my first for my 1st grandchild before he was born. He liked it right away. This book is simple, clever, very colorful and the pictures are charming. Through it children can learn colors, animals, numbers, counting and beginning reading.Tiny babies enjoy looking at the bright colors. Toddlers enjoy counting the animals. Pre-schoolers enjoy reading it to you.
The left hand pages say the number and the color. The right side pages show the number and unfold to become a picture of the animal. It is printed on heavy, shiny stock so it is sturdy and can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Thirteen years of our family's grandchildren still enjoy their copies. In March another one will have their chance.

This is the only book our son will sit through (time after time). He loves to open the flaps and the illustrations are bright and funny. I had to order another because our first one is almost worn out. Highly recommended.

Great for squirmy one-year-olds

Our baby is so active and squirmy now that it's hard to coax him to sit still for books. This book is so entertaining that he cuddles in and pays attention. Every time we say "One yellow..." and then flip open the flap to say "LION!" he roars with laughter. A clever and well-illustrated book.

This intriguing and fast paced book held my attention until the end. I immediately sought more of her books but the local bookstore had none of them. I particularly like the main characters as they seem to come from my immediate surroundings, which prompted me to keep doors and windows locked while reading. Refreshing and very real.

When E.J. Pugh discovers the bodies of her next door neighbors and the four-year-old who witnessed it she is horrified. After she finds out that she has been named Bessie's guardian, she worries that the child could be the next target of the killer. When she also finds out that the police think that Mr. Lester killed his wife, child and himself she becomes determined to clear his name and protect Bessie. I couldn't put down this fast paced and high intensity start to the E. J. Pugh series.

Dearly love E.J., but

I am glad I am not her neighbor!! This was the first book I read from Cooper, and the friends/neighbors deaths were shocking to me. Cooper managed to pull it out and the book was a good read. Can't wait to read more to see how the family is coping and what danger is lurking around the corner for the Pugh's.

Wonderful book--I couldn't put it down.

I started this book and was hooked from the very beginning. I cried with E.J. Pugh, the protagonist, at the death of her friends and neighbors--the whole family except for one little girl. I could feel for E.J. and her family dealing with: inability to believe and cope with the idea that a beloved friend could committ a brutal murder like this, the difficulty in taking a child so emotionally injured by this incident and trying to adapt her into a new family, with E.J. trying to solve this murder. One of the very best mysteries I have read. I already love and reccommend Susan Rogers Coopers series about Sheriff Milt Kovack, an Oklahoma lawman, as a superior series. But I wonder, after this book, how will she ever be able to keep the suspense this high again. I hope E.J. Pugh and her family are around for a long time.
