I really enjoy the Osteen's books and this devotional has been a blessing to me. It offers gentle encouragement. It is not as "meaty" perhaps as the Copeland's devotional, but nevertheless has been helpful.

As a widow I have been having a hard time even wanting to live. The title of the book caught my eye then I noticed it was written by Joel Osteen's Mom, Dodie Osteen, who is also a widow. I figured "Why not give it a try?"

It has been a delightful way to start each day -- quick, easy reading, and thought provoking. I have used other daily devotional books in the past, but none has met my needs the way this book has.

As a psychiatric social worker this book gives an excellent perspective on the foster care system, how we would knew it and what it has become. In addition the book Dr.Cournos writes sheds an enormous light on the alienation of family and the reasons that alienation might occurr. It is a sad tale with a shinning light ending. As a mother who has almost lost a child to cancer, this book has inspired me to look ahead and consider all the possibilities, as Dr. Cournos has. It is a book that all should read.

A compelling and touching memoir

It didn't occur to me that I would be so touched by Francine Cournos's book. I have an interest in child welfare issues, which is why I read it. She deals with a much bigger issue than foster care -- she writes about the voluminous effect that the loss of parents can have on a child throughout his or her life. Brava, Dr. Cournos. Thank you for sharing your life with us. This is a must-read for anyone who works with children in any arena.

This book moved and enlightened me. Cournos' story of surviving what every child fears most--the loss of both her parents--is raw, vivid, and remarkably compassionate given that she became a foster child through willful neglect on the part of her extended family. Cournos succeeds in transforming her own particular journey into a roadmap for others who want or need to understand what it is to be an orphan. Brave and beautifully done!

Excellent knowlege of Foster Care system and loss of family.

Dr. Cournos' memoir gives voice to the effects of early loss

As a writer, and as someone whose own experiences of childhood loss and its aftereffects closely parallel those of Dr. Cournos, I found City of One both deeply moving and comforting. We who have the hole where the loving parent should be, we who deal with the myth and the anger and the quest for wholeness, understand every word. Not only does Dr. Cournos evoke the pain of the loss, but her honesty and her search for the strengths that can come from a tragic early life goes beyond judgment and pathology. It goes to the things that define our lifelong sense of who we are. I highly recommend this memoir to anyone who wants to understand or who struggles with these issues.

In my opinion, Bob and Ray's stuff from the 1950's is by far their best. Then they were young, fresh - and often improvisatory! Classic Bob and Ray Volume 1 includes four episodes of "Matt Neffer, Boy Spotwelder", which has to be the most surreal, dream-like, (and utterly pointless) series ever conceived. There are also episodes of "One Fella's Family", another of B & R's great pieces. The bits with "Arthur Sturdley"
(a take-off on radio personality Arthur Godfrey) are priceless!

B & R's capacity for voices and characterization is amazing.
This little-known comedy duo will bring you endless laughter, joy, and emotional health. Long live Bob and Ray!

Note: I know that "Family" was a parody of the popular soap opera "On Man's Family" and of the show "Vic and Sade". But what was "Matt Neffer" based on, if anything? I'd be interested to know.

These wonders of comedy fill my heart with wonder and delight as Mary opens a fast-food toast restaurant or Gustav Groundhog sells merchendise. Bob and Ray surely were ahead of their times with witty, sharp stories that make you wonder... do dogs REALLY make ginger-ale soup?

It's always fun to tell ghost stories around a fire late at night, but coming up with something original isn't always easy. Adams has offerred us a collection of truly original tales that make for a spooky evening.

Adams has a knack for the original while he mixes small-town nastalgia with evil lurking just around the corner, or on the radio, or in the pond, or in the woods.

I'd love to read a full length effort from JA in the future.

We found it here with Creepy Campfire Tales. Wide eyes from our boys looking back at me over the fire while I read from its pages say it all. Keep em coming!!!

Perfect Book For Camping or Halloween Parties
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-01
This book is perfect to tell around campfires or to kids on hayrides during Halloween parties, if you live in the country like us. The stories are short enough to remember the main details for retelling, yet long enough when you read them by yourself they seem to really be happening. Also, there are no dumb endings or forced scenes where people do unrealistic things. Everything seems like something logical you would do if the story was really ahppening. They all happen at Halloween or In October, and all around campgrounds or camp fires at some point in the story. They are all new too. So many other campfire story books we bought were retellings of old stories or just dumb stories. These are brand new, so the kids will really be shcoked by the endings. There are hayrides, monsters, spooky scenes in the deserted woods, and lonely campsites on farms. Onse story is about a family all alone, in the deep woods of Maine, and what happens to them when an unknown "thing" intrudes on their cook out. Having been to Maine, the feeling lonelinees and isolation in the book matches the real thing. Our friends from the big city (Manchester) think being out in the middle of nowhere is terifying. We think dark city streets are scary, so I bet city folk like our friends would be very scared by this book. It is fine for teens, while there is death and fright, no cusssing or sex (aside from one kissing scene, no nudity you could say.). Many of these characters reminded me of being in school and all the bon fires we would have, which sooner or later, led to telling ghost stories.

So, I read this book after a friend recommended it. I have never really enjoyed 'campfire tales'. This book was as creepy as it promised. And definitely original. I couldn't put the book down. I have shared the book already and have another friend waiting for it to be returned. I'll definitely read the second one. Keep writing, Mr. Adams and keep sharing those freakish dreams of yours. And I'll try to get some of my friends to buy their own copies...

This book is a really awesome book to have!! I was looking for a book with scary campfire stories to read when we all go camping and I hit the jackpot with this book. Everyone absolutely loves it. The stories seem so real and it's very easy to get wrapped up in them. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who loves a good horror story. Looking forward to Part II of Creepy Campfire Tales or any book for that matter written by James D. Adams, he knows how to keep your interest.

I recently purchased the book and the audi discs and I love them. I am not yet at a point where I am willing to go to a Yoga class and this book is giving me the courage do so now that I am familar with the positions.

The book is customized to specific body areas which encourages me to work on my problem areas. The book also offers modifications if you are having difficulty getting into the positions as pictured. It's also a great book to bring along when traveling.

I highly recommend Dana Edison's Yoga. Although I can't get into the positions completely.. YET.. my flexibility improved after a week using the modified positions.

The picturs and easy to read instructions coundn't be better. I also LOVE how the book is broken down into different body parts. So, just as I would train different body parts in the gym with weights on different days, I can incorporate different poses and stretches for the body part I'm training on that particular day.
The core exercises are great! I do them daily, and they hit the core in a way no ab machine in the gym could come close to!

Kotarides hooks you and sucks you in with the first chapter then weaves the important story lines together. They end with a twist you may not expect from what you've been reading. No "Spoilers" here... A Day in God's Country is just good, old fashioned story telling. The themes range from adolescent angst, a history lesson of the Virginia Beach area, political intrigue, broken families, the belief in the power of a guiding presence; to modern day immigration and open border policies...It is all there. If you are not religious, don't be put off by the title; if you are religious, don't rely on the title. Many locals call their beautiful hometown, "God's Country". In this book, Kotarides uses all the interpretations of God's Country, whether it is used for the Tidewater Area setting, the place in a person's heart, or in fact God's own domain. This story of three boys' lives that are changed forever by the events of the summer will leave you riding a rollercoaster of emotions to the last word.

Although not new to digital photography I have found this book reveals many aspects of the subject which in many other books are frequently not explained fully enough to totally grasp the concepts or are explained in such detail that one has to fathom what it's all about.

Explanations are clearly detailed on how to optimize such subjects as exposure, balancing white point, controlling color, archiving images and numerous others aspects of digital photography.

Kevin gives readers the opportunity of trying a number of exercises relating to the contents of the book and even offers images which can be down loaded from his web site.

This book is well illustrated with explicit explanations and the setting out of topics makes for easy understanding. A book well worth reading for both the enthusiast and experienced photographer.

After much thought and reluctance I finally have made the transition from film to digital and purchased a DSLR. I needed a book to help me make the transition and decided on Kevin Ames' book. A very fortuitous choice on my part indeed. He writes in a fashion that is interesting, informative, to the point and most importantly easy to understand. As a result of using the book as a guide I have enjoyed the digital transition thoroughly and have come to realize I have made the right decision.
What impressed me the most was when I had a problem registering for downloads from his website and I emailed him. I was expecting an email in return. Got not an email but a personal phone call from Kevin to help me with the problem!! Kevin was extremely helpful. He not only took the time to solve the original problem but gave some very good advice on other issues as well. His enthusiasm for photography and willingness to share with others his knowledge and expertise is evident in the book and was borne out by a personal phone call from him. I am very impressed. Buy the book, you will not be disappointed.

For those not fortunate enough to attend one of Kevin Ames' workshops, as I recently did, this "Dummies" book is the next best thing. Whether you are a beginner to digital photography or a practicing professional, Digital SLR Photography with Photoshop by Kevin Ames is a valuable addition to your "toolbox."

Ames is that rare combination of artist and teacher, and this book is one of the most comprehensive, clearest and easiest to follow "how to" books that I have come across.

I've been a photography hobbyist for more than fifty years and the early chapters on fundamentals were still a worthwhile refresher. As a serious amateur my pictures are important to me, so I found Ames' unique approach to non-destructive image processing, disciplined file organization and foolproof archiving to be extremely valuable and essential information.

A simple thought from a simple man, spoken in the midst of the worst riot in Los Angeles in 30 years. A quote still remembered today almost 15 years later. For all his faults and lack of pedigree, Rodney King got it right. Inspite of our differences, "We Have To Get Along"...

"Diversity At Work", is a blueprint for doing just that.

As a manager for a large retail company, I am faced with this dilemma everyday. How do you bring a group of people from all walks of life and different backgrounds together for the common good of the company? How do you hold them together long enough to get your job done effectively? How do you motivate people individually, while still staying true to the objectives of the group?

Dr. Gerhardt's book was an eye opener in changing my thinking on how I deal with these issues at work. It would be difficult to explain to you without reading his book first.

We seem to only notice the differences in people these days. We've forgotten the bond between people that makes us whole.

Paul Gerhardts book reminded me, that in spite of our differences, we are all part of a larger family. One to be treated with respect, personel, or professional. Quite frankly, he sold me.

I'd bet that I could now find at least 5 things of common interest with anyone in the world in under 15 minutes. This is how you build a bridge...you begin by starting to build it.

Read this book. It will help you in ways I can't explain.

Matt Hillson.

Through candid storytelling he is able to depict a young man's journey through the Department of Mental Retardation and through his first few months in the "Real World". Though it is peppered with humor, this book will leave you seriously contemplating what you have just read.

Those that have had the pleasure of reading his first novel can clearly see how much Trask has grown as an author.

I read this book for work, as director of communications for a coalition of family groups and individuals caring for someone in Massachusetts with severe or profound mental retardation. I'll be reviewing it for our newsletter, at [...], and discussing how "accurate" it might be in documentary terms.

But in terms of what fiction can do well, Daniel Trask has performed a double service. First of all, he is a powerful writer who keeps you reading, and he has produced a rare description of a little of what it's like to be with th most complicated and disabled people with mental retardation. This minority within a minority -- perhaps 10 percent of people who meet the legal definition for MR -- are not the people you meet bagging groceries or see on fundraising posters.

He also produces a rare account of the group dynamics of a small group home. (There are actually two fictional homes in the book.) The characters are well drawn, and he understands quite well how some very disabled people, some who do not even speak, nevertheless have the full range of human personality: They are brave, sly, grouchy, joyful, sulky, mean, sad, nostalgic, stubborn or determined. This is a lot harder to write than Updike's old people in his early novel, The Poorhouse Fair.

So little has been written about group homes for people with MR/developmental disability, even academically, that Trask's fine novel may be mistaken for documentary. It is important to remember that both the author and the character worked as a direct caregiver for only six months in two group homes. Some who have devoted their careers to this work will be offended at the slacker, John, whose sometimes paralyzed or ignorant viewpoint colors what he sees. This is a fairly punk coming-of-age novel, and it is probably more reportorial about what it's like to be a binge drinker than what's like to have intellectual disability and behavioral complications, or even what it's like to work with such people.

The character's lack of context may confuse some readers. It's only casually mentioned well into the book that the people in state-operated group homes are much more disabled than 90% of the people served by Mass DMR -- who live with family or in private non-profit groups homes. While deinstitutionalization has been a great success for most people with mild or moderate MR; there are some painful tradeoffs for the most disabled people moved out of the concentration of resources and secure treatment of the much-reformed large facilities -- and into small group homes with daily transportation to programs or supported employment. The character doesn't really get this issue, so the reader also lacks context.

"John" has his moments, most lyrically when he and another staffer take a wheelchair user for a swim. On the other hand, the author and character are on thin ice with a neutral reaction to a sexual situation in the house, and informed readers may feel the book's credibility cracking underfoot.

But if you're not so close to the sitution, don't worry about that. (Consider in another part of your mind that the lifetime incidence of sexual abuse for people with intellectual disability is 90%.) It's a novel, and it cracks open the door on some aspects of life that you haven't encountered before. If you want to open the door and really look, there are volunteer and career opportunities everywhere.

As a published author and the sister of a challenged sibling who was born during the early 1050's when there were no resources and most if not all of the challenged were placed in institutions and forgotten or put in the back room of a family's home and forgotten Daniel Task's book DMR hit me between the eyes.
My sibling was blessed with a family and a support group who loved him and encouraged him to succeed at a time when success was not an option. However, during the course of my lifetime, I have seen challenged indiviuals who were not so blessed.
DMR brings that home to roost. Daniel takes his reader into the minds of these beautifully different people who only want acceptence as we all do.One of his characters by the name of Stanley( which is also my sibling's name who is challenged) only wants love, and respect. It is clearly indicated that he had been abused by care givers at one time because he was different. Sean the current caregiver appears to get great delight in Stanley reliving the horror of that abuse.
Juilian a lost soul in a trapped mind. Daniel shows us how our ignorance or stupidty of accepting the challenged affects those who are challenged in his dealings with Juilian. Juilian a kind soul who always has a smile who is much smarter than he is given credit for. This is shown the day John forces him to get up to get ready for work. Juilian knew he was not supposed to go to work that day. But, John didn't.
The moral is we as "normal" people think and really believe the challenged are stupid and don't have any sense at all.
The reality is they are sometimes much smarter than we are.
The poignant love of Ralph and Rose pulled at my heart. This is so true with the challenged. They want to have normal relationships w ith the opposite sex. They want someone who loves them unconditionally. The want what we have. Some would say that is wrong. My question is why? That is for you the reader to decide.
Daniel takes the reader into places they really don't want to go. Maybe it is fear, maybe it is the fact that we refuse to believe that the challenged are just like the rest of us with wants, needs, desires and goals and dreams. Maybe we don't want to believe that simply because un our own way each of us are also challenged and often fall very short of our wants dreams goals and desires. We fear that which we don't understand. Daniel Trask has broken down that door of fear. He has made each of us face our own demons by facing those of the characters of DMR.
This book should be in the hands of every teacher, social worker and judge. This book should be required reading for every person who goes into the special education field either as a teacher or social worker.
Daniel Trask has captured the essence of the challenged and prejiduce facing them.
This book is a must read.

For the most part, reading this book is like driving past a car accident with injuries: you're not sure you really want to see it, but you can't look away. Author Daniel Trask is an intelligent young man who displays amazing insight into human nature through this fictionalized account of working with mentally retarded individuals. He skillfully shows his main character as having an innate capacity for compassion while having him relate his frustrating and sometimes disgusting experiences with unflinching honesty. He doesn't canonize himself nor his co-workers, yet he manages to show a subtle respect for these dedicated but very human men and women. For all the book's disturbing events, you still come away with a feeling of hope for both the disabled individuals and the people who care for them.

I was very moved by this story. The writer puts you in a world that most tend to fear and shy away from, but he makes you see the beauty of these people who've been forgotten by society. The author also rips down the barriers between mentally challenged and typical people... and does so both comedically and sincerely.
Wonderful ending, too. Poignant writing. Doesn't hold back.

The practice of medicine is a serious affair. Dr. Bennett's new book is a lighthearted counterweight to our daily effort, allowing us to chuckle at ourselves, our colleagues, our profession and all of those who interact with it. The book is also a good source for that fitting joke or quip you might need for a lecture, a toast, or a presentation. Open up any page for a few moments of zany entertainment. It makes a perfect gift for yourself, a friend or as a "thank you" to a colleague.

There is no doubt that humans are the funniest animals on the planet, and appropos of the medical theme of this humorous book, I thought I would make one comment in that vein.

Yes, we humans are pretty funny creatures, but what would you expect of a mammal that actually has a "funny bone?" I'm referring to the upper-arm bone, which is actually named the "humerus." Well, it's actually spelled a little differently, but only by a couple of letters, and that's probably because anatomists didn't usually win first place in their spelling bees in school.

Well, I don't know if the hip bone is connected to the thigh bone myself, but I did learn how to spell way back when. Anyway, this book is sure to tickle the humerus or funny bone in all of us, and it just goes to show you that although seriousness may be only skin-deep, funny is truly to the bone.

This is the funniest book I've read in a long time. It's loaded with anecdotes, definitions, jokes and quotations about doctors and medicine. Almost no medically related subject is left out. Even in you think you don't have time to read (who does?) find some time for this relaxing and enjoyable book. Howard Fischer, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Humor and laughter in medicine are needed now more than ever before because of the increasing stresses of modern medical practice. This gem of a book compiled by Dr. Bennett, himself a noted humorist, includes a great variety of quips, quotes, and jokes that can serve as a lifeline to sanity for stressed-out physicians whether in practice or still in their training years. Much of the material in this book is both funny and original and can be used to liven up ward rounds, medical lectures, and yes, even the sacred physician-patient relationship. It should be relished but should also be shared. Lugwig A. Lettau, Charleston, SC.

As a medical student I really enjoyed reading this book. I've read other books and articles of Bennet, and enjoy his humorous way of putting things. Asa foreigner I had a few difficulties enjoying all of the jokes related to US health services. However, all in all I found the book worthwhile reading, and I had some really big laughs that cramped my stomach. I am sure I am going to read and reread this book in the future.....after all, good humour and hilarious jokes are the best medicine ever invented, and there are no sideeffects!!!

This book is a gem!

This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. Dr. Bennett did a terrific job pulling together both classic and original quotes about doctors and medicine. Enjoy the material when you have some free time during the day or comb through the collection looking for amusing lines to use on rounds, lectures, or other medical situations. Best of all, buy the book for your medical friends or anyone who enjoys funny and insightful lines about doctors, medicine, and health.
