Annie Sprinkle, Dr. Sprinkle's Spectacular Sex: Make Over Your Love Life with One of the World's Great Sex Experts (Tarcher, 2005)

You know you've come to the end of your reviewing rope when you can't think of anything to say about a sex manual. But, well, here I am.

It's an enjoyable book, don't get me wrong-- a romp with Annie Sprinkle is always fun. Annie Sprinkle has a perspective on sex that most of us will never achieve (no matter how much we'd like to), and her insights are most welcome. But the book never grabbed me, never slapped me around and said "you must read me now," ending up taking me almost eleven weeks to finish.

There's a good deal to like here. The subject, obviously, is sexual self-help for those whose love lives have taken a turn for the boring, and as long as you're willing to buy into some of the more new age-y techniques recommended, there are all sorts of interesting things here to try. Be prepared for a slow read, however. ***

A smart, fun and from the heart read.

Annie has so much to share and teach us all, and she does it with a sense of fun that is missing from most sexuality books. It is smart, inspiring and truly from the heart. Do yourself a favor and read this book. It just might change your sex life AND your life!

Dr. Sprinkle has done it again! She has succeeded in finding that perfect balance between providing you with solid information and specific steps to achieve a given goal while maintaining her sense of humor and down to earth demeanor. Annie Sprinkle is positively the sweetest PhD. you will ever meet in the pages of a book or in person and her work is completely user friendly. When I am feeling down or jaded by life, Annie's positive attitude never fails to invigorate and inspire. This latest book deserves its own reality TV show! How about it Oprah?

Annie Sprinkles very personal heart felt Spectacular Sex Guide inspires us into our sexual potential giving us the tools for sexual transformation. Even if we already have a satisfying sex life there are many interesting exercises here to try. I can relate to Annie's libraries of sexual experience even though I have not taken as many adventures as her. Really folks if some of us turned off our TVs and used that time to further our sexual awareness there would be a great possibility for personal sexual freedom. My favorite quote would be "Don't worry; be horny." Now that this wonderful book has been put on sale there couldn't be a better time to buy it.

Last year, my husband was diagnosed with an incurable cancer at just 35 years of age. As we went through this devastating ordeal, the last thing we wanted to read about was how we should be having some great epiphany. I can assure you that cancer is not the best thing that ever happened to our family, nor did it make us better people. I often felt guilty for the sort of resentment I felt towards the cancer hype portrayed in the media. That is, until I read Ms. Lewis' book and discovered that I wasn't the only one with this reaction. How liberating to read thoughts, which mirrored my own, within those pages!

When I first found this book on Amazon, I read the synopsis and excerpts to my husband. We were both in tears from hysterical laughter! I anxiously awaited the book and immediately dove into the pages when it arrived. I read most of it aloud to my husband, who laughed along with me, giving us a much needed therapeutic break. As my husband and I further discussed excerpts, I learned details about his perspective, about which I had never thought. I was able to see I had unknowingly been insensitive in certain instances. This book served as a wonderful catalyst for discussion.

Ms. Lewis states her case clearly and adeptly. The writing is exceptional, and the read is easy and light. As a writer myself, this book served as a wonderful source of inspiration. It certainly tops my list of favorites!

I want to thank Ms. Lewis for having the guts to be honest about this very sensitive topic. There is an immense amount of pressure on patients, "survivors", and caregivers to "sugar-coat" the realities of cancer. In my opinion, her candid approach is much more therapeutic and helpful in the end. I encourage anyone going through a cancer experience to read this book. It is a valuable resource for patients, caregivers, family, and friends.

Is it possible to be this sardonic and compassionate at the same time?
Shelley Lewis opens the windows in the stuffy room of bumper sticker spirituality. Funny and caring in a Nora Ephron way and yet full of useful info. I read it as a story, not as a way to face breast cancer, and I recommend it to doctors and patients. You don't have to have breast cancer to enjoy this book. Another book I recommend to anyone facing a "devastating diagnosis" is Jessie Gruman's Aftershock.

Thanks Shelly!

Thanks you Shelly for letting me know that I am not alone!
I am in the middle of my chemotherapy treatments for breast cancer and I WAS feeling lousy for not finding the "silver lining" and not experiencing the upliftling life changing moment I was supposed to get from having cancer.
She really gave me alot to think about, namely that its ok to have my own experience and it's ok if it really sucks.
Thanks for writing this book Shelly!

Being a 3 time breast cancer repeat offender, this book rang more true than any of the others I have read. I was beginning to feel guilty about not having a spiritual experience until I read this book. Also I was getting quite peeved about "the race" because they don't interview people with multiple occurences. They only show happy, happy, happy faces of those with 1 occurence. What are we, chopped liver?
This book has made me rethink my advice to first time offenders. It is certainly the most honest book I have read about this awful disease. I highly recommend it to any breast cancer patient or family member of patient.

Part memoir, part how-to book, "The Five Lessons I Didn't Learn from Breast Cancer" has universal appeal for all sorts of cancers, even the "non-female" kind like my non Hodgkin's lymphoma. Though there are plenty of how-to tips for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, I enjoyed this book because of Lewis' take on the "Tyranny of Positive Thinking" and the pinkapalooza cartel. I respect her choice not to call herself a "survivor," though I wonder if it's really because, as she says, Death wasn't at her door, but rather sent her a "Thinking of You Card." (For me, Death had pulled into the driveway and parked the car.) Never whiny and often downright funny, this book is a must-read for anyone who has been sucker punched by cancer.

I didn't want to put this book down! I appreciate the nostalgia found in Mr. Ivory's descriptive childhood stories. Each about his mother and friends were particularly endearing.
I expected his adult romantic recollections to be graphic, but was pleased that he was able to convey his memories without the use of totally explicit language. At times, however, I needed to skim a paragraph to avoid feeling uncomfortable. I recommend this book for it's humor and good-natured stories, but would discourage anyone offended by occasional explicit language.

My husband gave me this thing for my birthday and I have to say it is one of the best gifts he ever gave me. I have always been a Steve Ivory fan. I read his weekly column every week on the EUR website. However, recently, I had a bad experience with laser eye surgery and I haven't been able to see clearly let alone read for the past four months. My doctor gave me the okay to read again after my last visit and Mr. Ivory's Fool in Love was just what a girl needed to welcome sight back in her life. I love this book, it is so funny, and every story is about him, something he should write about more in his weekly column.

I recently read this book on vacation. This book is a must read. Even if you have never suffered from depression, this book gives you an inside look at what it's like to suffer from this disease. I'm amazed at the struggles Debbie has endured over the years. She gives hope to all the people out there suffering from this horrible disease. This book will certainly change the life of anyone who reads it. If you don't understand what depression is, after you read this, you will have a new understanding of the severity of it. You will no longer just tell people who suffer from depression to "snap out of it" as you will have a full understanding of the mind of someone who suffers from it.

Debbie, this was a wonderful book and I'm sure you will make a difference in many peoples lives.

I am not a fantasy reader but when the rage over Harry Potter got to me I picked up the first book, read it, and enjoyed it. But when I read Michele's GreeHee The Journey of Five I felt that I discovered a new J.K. Rowling.

The lovable characters and their nightmarish adventures stemming from Michele's imagination - dragons, fairies, giants - are etched in your memory long after you close the book.

Like Harry Potter, Michele's fantasy will appeal to both children and adults. It's only a matter of time when the U.S. version of Ms. Rowling takes hold in America.

You have to read GreeHee the Journey of Five! It is so uplifting and inspiring! The characters in the book were filled with such goodness, love, hope, faith and tolerance. In a world filled with greed, war, anger and judgement, it was so refreshing to read this book. It takes you away to a better place - a place filled with the kind of awe, love and joy our own planet and people should possess more of.

The messages contained within the book are so important to our every day lives. We have to stay centered, balanced and fearless so we can find our inner selves and fight the internal/external battles that plague us daily. Only if we stay true to ourselves and love ourselves without judgement, and not cave in to pressures and expectations of others, do we win the war of life. If we stay true to this tenet, we will find ourselves surrounded by those who hold similar beliefs and values and love us for who we are as well, just like the five in the book.

I related to GreeHee the most because he had a difficult upbringing - parents who were not supportive of him and wanted him to conform to their twisted beliefs. Even though their conditioning didn't feel right inside, he was still fearful that maybe he was the one who was wrong - he was the one who was defective. But instead of just living a lie and going along with what others told him he should be, he struck out on his own, forged his own path and discovered his own belief and value system that was right for him. And because he stayed true to himself, he was able to conquer his fears in a way that others could not. His faith stayed strong, he was drawn to others who supported his search and in the end, he succeeded in conquering his demons - the ones we all face in our own lives.

There's something for everyone in GreeHee The Journey of Five - fantasy, magic, mystery, intrigue, adventure and especially wisdom. I still think about the wisdom contained in this book and try to apply it to my own life daily. I can't wait for book #2 to come out!

I couldn't stop reading this wonderful fantasy. I read it in one sitting through the night. Every character in the book touched a part of my soul as if I had been this character or at least lived the same experiences, feelings and thoughts at some time in my existence in this lifetime or in another. GreeHee, a young dragon, who wanted to be cruel like his father comes upon Loni,a young fairy, who helps GreeHee follow his heart. Together their adventures help them learn to love, overcome obstacles and be true to their hearts. This book is not just for children. Every adult should read this book. It helps us go back to our childhood where fantasy and dreams are always alive and real. You will love GreeHee, Loni and their adventures in Tamoor. I am looking forward to Michele Avanti's next book in the series. Thank you, Michele, for your vision and sharing it with us.

I'm a retired teacher. I've worked with elementary/middle school children and have tried to choose books to read to them or to recommend that would enhance their self esteem and encourage them to make good choices. GreeHee is an excellent book for these age groups. GreeHee is very unsure of himself in the beginning of the story but he grows into a self assured dragon because he learns to trust the love of his friends which helps him to learn to love himself. He learns that one can get through difficulties through teamwork and making good choices. He learns that following rules is essential to survival and doing well. I enjoyed watching GreeHee evolve into a happy and trustworthy dragon (friend). This story is uplifting and the loving qualities of the characters persist throughout. I felt better for having read it and I highly recommend it to any age group-even us big kids.

This is not my typical type of book to pick up...but I am sure glad I did!! From the moment I started reading, I craved more! I can see why so many children as well as adults enjoy this book!

GreeHee The Journey of Five, by Michele Avanti, took me to a whole different world. Every time I picked it up I forgot about the laundry, the bills, the to-do list... and just lost myself in the story.

GreeHee is a young dragon who seems to be born into the wrong form, as his heart is not that of what his father says a dragon should be - fierce. While practicing how to be fierce, GreeHee meets a young fairy, Loni. Intending to eat Loni and her family, GreeHee helps Loni find her way home. Along the way, the two become friends and face adventure together. I have to stop there or I'll give away too much information!

GreeHee The Journey of Five is a delight to read! Full of adventure, full of mystery, and full of magic ... you just won't be able to put it down! I highly recommend this for readers of all ages!!

I'm not a professional trainer, just a lifelong owner of multiple dogs. I also volunteer at a humane society, so I interact with a wide range of dogs on a non-professional level. Material in this book helps provide the foundation for understanding what trainers are doing and why it may work--or not! If you plan to be a professional, this book is a must.

The only downside to this book for some people will be that it is written at the collegiate level. It reminds me of any number of psychology and biology textbooks in college courses--the comprehensive ones that cover the genre from start to end! I end up taking notes while I'm reading, because there is so much there that I want to integrate into my approach. He presents information, shows how it can be applied to practice and proves his points with studies. Actually, sections are eerily applicable to human interaction. I'm a firm believer in using evidenced-based science guide practice, and Lindsay is exacting and detailed. He doesn't preach as much as present research and draw conclusions.

I only regret the generations of wolves and dogs that had to suffer to gain this knowledge. Read it and apply it, because some of the studies done to gain this knowledge could never be ethically replicated again (such as over-reactivity in sensory-stimulus deprived environments).

Contents include:
Origins and Domestication (of dogs)
Development of Behavior (in puppies)
Neurobiology of Behavior and Learning, which includes sections on motivation, fear, aggression, attachment and compulsive behaviors (see how interesting all this is!)
Sensory Abilities--knowing the dog's abilities helps target learning
Biological and Dispositional Constraints in Learning--has interesting sections on genetic strains with breeds and within breeds such as the 'nervous pointers'
Classical Conditioning
Instrumental Learning
Aversive Control of Behavior, including avoidence learning and punishment
Learning and Behavioral Disturbances
Human-Dog Companionship--the signficance of the relationship between people and dogs, and when it breaks down.

This is book has a wealth of knowledge. It addresses formal behavioral analysis and dog anatomy in a text book fashion. The strength of this book to me was how it covered each topic micro and macroscopically. I have heard many conflicting beliefs with respect to interpretation of dog learning. Each opinion is addressed and supported by scientific study here and not just taken left to the "because I said so" sort of logic I often hear. This is a dense read. It covers many subjects I had no clue that I may even care about but I took a lot from it. I look forward to reading volume 2 & 3.

Mr. Lindsay has compiled a thoroughly researched, well written tome, that is perhaps the best book on canine behavior I have ever read. Readers who enjoy detailed manuals respecting the reader's attention span, intelligence, education, literacy, and quest for knowledge will cherish Applied Dog Behavior and Training. The book is sufficient as a textbook at the graduate university level. For readers interested in learning intricately about the developmental history of domestic dogs, ontogenetics, neurophysiology, sensory physiology, canine psychology, learning theory, and training/conditioning theory this book is nonpareil. Moreover, the book is insightfully organized and formatted so it as easy to read as possible given the depth and breadth of the text and concomitant illustrations.

Nevertheless, unfortunately, Mr. Lindsay's book is not for everyone. In fact, it is probably appropriate for very few pet professionals and even fewer pet owners. The book is written tantamount to the materials utilized within a Master's or PhD program in biology, psychology, zoology or animal behavior. Although I am enthralled with the book, I believe most persons will be fatigued by the amount and complexity of information.

When the book first arrived, I just flipped through it quickly and wasn't overly impressed. Some of the pages looked like the artist was simply sketching ideas for characters. Then I sat down and read the book.

The story is told through the pictures. The text is sparse, but amazingly powerful (albeit slightly difficult to see on some of the darker pages). By the time I got to the end I felt like I had been on a journey and had just returned to the present.

I would not have believed that a book could be that compelling.

This book was recommended to me by Coach "Hutch" of the University of Michigan's Lady Wolverines, and I've not been disappointed. I highly recommend this book for both coaches and players (over 16).

I teach high school sports psychology and have used this book as a text on several occasions. I now make it mandatory for all of my softball and baseball players as additional reading. Their feedback has been nothing but positive regarding performance enhancement. I strongly recommend this user-friendly text for any sport!

This is a must read. A fascinating, gripping story filled with life lessons. The Nakatanis are honoring their children with their display of brutal honesty and courage!
As a parent of a gay child, as someone who also grew up in Hawaii, the emotions of the Nakatanis are not unlike emotions that many parents in small town America might feel when their children disclose their sexual orientation. Although the American public's awareness of the diversity of sexuality is increasing rapidly, unfortunately, that knowledge is not widespread.

Can anyone describe this book in just one word? I know I definitely can't! I'm a psychology student and we used Honor Thy Children in the human sexuality class as a secondary text. Reading it was one of the most difficult yet most rewarding experiences in my life. It is as wonderful as Tuesdays With Morrie, another book of the same genre, incredibly touching and had me laughing uncontrollably at some moments and crying with wrenching sobs the next. This book is incredible and reaches to everyone who has ever lived through a death of a loved one, familial problems or questions about sexual orientation. I feel honoured to have the opportunity to meet the Nakatani's in the next few weeks and share our thoughts.

A must read.

This story hit home for me. We like to believe we are so accepting in this society and that we always do what is best for our children. This story takes place in very recent history. The familiarity of the setting was profound for me.I graduated the same year as Guy Nakatani and went to the neighboring high school. A lot of my friends say they knew him. I didn't . Even in 1986, in San Jose, it was not acceptable to be gay. Most of us didn't discuss it, if we did we made fun of people. Looking back, I can see that a lot of mistakes were made out of ignorance. As a new parent myself, my heart will always be with Jane and Al. I was so proud of this family for sharing their story with all of us who needed to hear it. And an extra thanks to Molly Fumia for bringing it to us.

A moving must read!!

I first picked up this book almost by accident at a bargin bookstore in the mall one day

I read the cover and was curious why it said honor thy children and what were the stories behind the people on the cover

ThenI sat down and read it , and I was moved to tears!!

It gives a moving yet brutal picture about a family's stuggles. I can even imagine how devastating it would be to loose all 3 children

What makes this book so interesting is that is is told from the point of veiw of the parents that last surviving child guy and the author and all 3 points of view sucks you into their world their joys and thier pain.

It also eduacated me about AIds, and aids prevention not only in practices but in mindset

As a young woman who is in the era of the Aids epidemic this book as shown me the importance of holding your own life scared and to protect oneself from this disease by becoming informed

I am apart of my colleges gay straight alliance and my first instinct from reading this book is that I have to donate it to the library because is wass too sad for me personally to read again , but if someone else could get what I got from this book then that would be great

The book also gives a look about the 2 gay son's different views on being gay men, and how that realization changes thier lives forever

I suggest that you read this book because this is a true life real glimps of am american family and what they go thorugh as human beings, it will move the unmovable , inform us about other people, and touch us

The most beautiful and devastating book that I've read....

It's been said: "There are people who take the heart out of you, and there are people who put it back."

Al and Jane Nakatani have turned their hearts inside out for the world to see...and Molly Fumia, as their story's conduit, treats those hearts with the tenderest, utmost respect. I find it difficult to convey how deeply moved I am by the infinite losses this family has suffered, and by the love and blessings that they have chosen to offer the world out of their broken-open hearts. *Please* read this book, and follow its most courageous lead: Honour your children, whoever they may be!

Perhaps the most useful aspect of this book is helping today's business leader understand blogs, podcasting, social networking and other new forms of mass communications. As newspaper readership continues to drop like a rock down a well, the great promotional opportunities are expanding on the Web. As someone who teaches public relations through the continuing education arm of UC San Diego and writes on marketing CLIENT SEDUCTION: A Step-by-Step Lead Generation System for Professional and Technology Service Firms Pain Killer Marketing: How to Turn Customer Pain into Market Gain, I read many books about the field. Robert Deigh has created an excellent guidebook filled with practical tips. I will recommend this book to all my lifelong learning students who want to improve their companies, careers and personal causes.

As a PR practitioner, I plan to get this book into the hands of my clients. It can help them in a fun, informative way understand the reality of public relations--in other words what works and what doesn't. Robert Deigh knows his stuff and he knows how to communicate it. I hope that university PR courses adopt this as a text. It's the practical advice that folks starting off in the PR profession need.

If you are only going to buy one marketing/PR book this year, this is the one. How Come No One Knows About Us is part primer on public relations and part quick PR guide for the busy professional. Written for both lay people and marketing pros alike, this clear and concise yet funny `how to' aims to supply you with everything you need to know about how to market your business or product. The book's apt subtitle is The Ultimate Public Relations Guide and it fits. It's truly chock-ful of everything you need to get your marketing plan in gear. But the best parts, I think, are the Rapid Read Checklists in every chapter. What a great idea! Makes it so easy to put Deigh's advice into action. Virtually every question I had about how to raise the visibility of a business was answered in this neat, engaging, and well-written volume. It's a must on every business bookshelf.
