Cheryl Duran has created a useful compendium of the horror field for the neophyte and the seasoned fan alike. Written by a true fan of the genre, this book is a fun overview which includes movies, TV, comics and toys. It turned me onto a couple of vintage movies I had never seen and sent me scrambling to my local video store to check them out!

The Monster Club.com's guide to horror is great fun to read! It really captures the spirit of why I love horror. I've loved monsters and horror films since I was little, and I have a huge collection of books dedicated to horror. What sets this book apart from the rest is the tone. It's obvious that the author is a fan of many of the same films I like, and her enthusiasm is contagious. Instead of taking a clinical approach and analyzing topics or films to death, she takes you on a fun whirlwind tour of many facets of the world of horror. Highly recommended!

This book has a place of honor on my coffee table. If you're like me and have friends who can hold an entire conversation using nothing but movie quotes, you've found the perfect book to brush up on your skills. Very funny and oddly useful.

This is a hilarious book that provides great quotes for every situation. Think about how many times (e.g. at parties) you have wanted to deliver that perfect quote from Major League or Star Wars! I also enjoy just browsing through it and reminiscing about great movies.

No, this poetry isn't about sex. It's about laughing in death's face, begging it to play Russian Roulette with you.

As I read this book, my stomach became twisted in knots. I cried 3 poems into it, and became nauseous toward the middle. There is one VERY sweet poem, "Crowning Her," which gave me hope, made me smile (out of a sense of relief), but the speaker spirals down again, hard.

I could NOT put this book down. I read every poem two or three times before devouring the next. It's the exact same feeling I got when I read American Psycho, although the subject matter is completely different.

After I put the book down, I wanted to be near the writer and help bear the pain. You cannot read this book and NOT be greatly affected. Bravo.

[edit a few weeks later] Apparently I got very near the writer. I just married him. ;-)0

another amazing discovery...

this was not an easy book to read...
but if you like unflinching honesty and intense reality, try it out.

this is not poetry to make you feel uplifted or enlightened or made into a better person.
these are words to make you reevaluate who and what you are when you look in the mirror.

It is in 250 pages, with margins to take and make your own notes (a feature I used and enjoyed). It is in two parts and 18 chapters. The first Neuro Presentations (coma, headache, dizzy, dementia, ataxia). The second is Neuro Disease (vascular, infectious, trauma, demyelinating, metabolic/systemic, movement, Neoplastic, epilepsy, sleep, spinal cord, neuromuscular, pain, pediatric). Each chapter has 4-7 cases. Each case is about 2-3 pages in length. Cases are very interactive and provoking; the questions are followed by the answers/explanations. The case is built in the following manner: history and exam, summarize it, localize (not all), differential diagnosis, obtain further info, narrow the differential diagnosis, management, and prognosis.
In addition, there are informative concise reviews related to the case, for example Status protocol.
I used this book during my oral board preparation, and I found it very helpful. I agree with the two previous reviewers from June 2004.

Fantastic review that helps you think in the style that is tested on the oral boards. An ample amount of cases in which to practice. Not bogged down with irrelevant details. A must-read prior to Part II boards.

Cases are organized by topic, and each has sections on presentation, exam, summary, DDX, evaluation and treatment. Very thought-provoking, and, I'm told, much like the actual process of taking the oral exam.

The best guide for adult college students

This book is an excellent resource for adults, especially full-time working adults, preparing to return to or start higher education programs. The author does a wonderful job of helping potential students "shop around" for the schools and programs that will meet specific goals of each student. Admissions recruiters' job is to sell the school they work for, this book helps shoppers look at options available in a non-bias way.
Explaining the difference in accreditation, in degrees, certificates, continuing education, and training programs, traditional and non-traditional, format and delivery of courses, etc. is extremely helpful for individuals to discern the differences between the countless options available to adult learners.

Don't waste your time sitting in class for another month getting ready for Step 1. Get these books, knuckle down and do ALL of them (it will take well disciplined 7-8 hours of study 6 days per week) and you will do great. That's what I did, I'm no genius, and I still scored in the 96th percentile.

This book is an excellent resource for nursing students especially if you are needing practice with nclex style questions or focusing in on specific items to study. For instance, it has items tagged NCLEX and almost invariably these items ended up on most of my unit and final exams. With so much info to know this definitely helped me hone in on the most important pieces. It is written in outline format, it is easy to read and the extra test questions are excellent.

This book is great for reviewing Fundamentals of Nursing Freshman I (Level 1) Nursing. I used it to review for my final and for perioperative nursing. It has an outline, pre and post tests, as well as NCLEX questions and a CD with more questions. I just bought Medical-Surgical by the same author!!! I will probably buy the next set for L&D, Peds, and Psych if they have them available. Thank you for a wonderfully written study tool.

This textbook explains the nursing process in an easy to use entry level nursing book. It takes a student nurse from the LVN/LPN level all the way to an RN advanced practice nurse -- showing you how to use the nursing process to enhance your practice. It includes the most up-to-date NANDA approved nursing diagnosis. Once you read how to apply your assessment to implementation & evaluation, you'll take this to the clinical setting with you, along with your stethescope. Marybeth Sinclair BSN, RN Nursing Faculty
