Oliver Goldsmith (1730-74) was an Anglo-Irish author and poet, who is most remembered today for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield, his play She Stoops to Conquer, and his children's tale The History of Little Goody Two Shoes. He led an interesting life, living often on the edge of poverty because of his inability to budget his money, or resist a hard-luck story. In the early nineteenth century, the great American author, Washington Irving (1783-1859) penned this biography of Goldsmith.
Overall, I found this to be an excellent biography. When I saw the book's age, I expected it to be a dry and lifeless biography. But, in fact, Irving (the author of The Legend of Sleepy Hallow and Rip Van Winkle) was a great writer, and he succeeds in making this biography surprisingly lively and interesting.
This is an interesting and highly informative biography. So, if you want to know about Oliver Goldsmith, I can't recommend any biography more than this great work by Washington Irving.

Islamic Aesthetics: An Introduction is a scholarly, college-level discussion of Islamic art throughout history. Adopting the viewpoint that the criteria applied to Islamic art should be no different than that applied to art in general, and that any attempt to put Islamic art in an especial category of its own is at best misguided, Islamic Aesthetics strives to explore issues of philosophy, history, theology, and technical considerations concerning the analysis of classic art and to portray a solid understanding of the art produced from the interplay of these powerful forces. A non-judgement, technical, in-depth discussion, and a welcome contribution to art history and artistic interpretation shelves, whether for private study or college libraries.

In 101 questions and answers, the author explains ISO 9000: what it is and how it works. The book is written in plain language, avoiding technical jargon and "quality speak," and is addressed to mid- to upper management level people that have little if any experience in the quality assurance technologies. ISO 9000 Answer Book is also an excellent reference tool, with extensive cross-referencing to help users obtain the right answers quickly.

A historian and Austen-lover's take on the Jane canon: this is a terrific book! MacDonagh has a chapter on each of the major novels, filled with insight on a particular social/historical aspect. "Emma and Social Traffic", for example, examines the relationships among the characters in order to illuminate the social framework of Highbury-like towns in the Regency...or is it vice versa? This is a book aimed at those who have read most or all of Austen's works, but for those of us in that category, Jane Austen's Real and Imagined Worlds provides a way to revisit the beloved novels in a new light, and with a most erudite and entertaining guide.

I find the "computer science" style of presenting information to make it a rather difficult read. Excessive use of symbols and exhaustive proofs is a contributing factor. The code motion formulations have slightly different boolean logic in some places relative to other works on the topic, such a Morgan or Muchnick's books. This can make keeping track of the novel changes to the algorithms a bit tricky.
However, this book presents some significant improvements to earlier code motion algorithms and as the primary source for some variations (notably including accounting optimally for register pressure) should be considered required reading for anybody working on code motion transformations in a modern optimizing compiler.
