A great intro to quantum groups

This book is a very clear and self-contained introduction to quantum groups and related objects. The book begins with a very well-written introduction via quasiclassical objects, which makes the theory of quantum groups seem very natural from the outset. The book is especially useful in that it provides a solid explanation of the theorem on existence of quantizations of Lie bialgebras, by one of the discoverers of the result (Etingof)!

Mr Milward-Oliver's books are a precious source of references for any reader of Deighton's books: they are like a compass in a maze of characters, situation and historical or fictional times. I only wish he could write an updated edition of both his books, this one and "Companion". At least 2 more Bernard Samson trilogies and the "Blood, Sweat and Tears" trilogy have appeared in the last 14 years.

An impressive collection of thirty-six letters

Letters To Dalton: Higher Education And The Degree Salesmen by education observer and commentator John R. Turner is an impressive collection of thirty-six letters in which he deftly presents a variety of attitudes and viewpoints critiquing high schools and colleges. Sometimes invective, sometimes inspirational, always with an eye toward the foundation of educational institutions rather than their surface issues, Letters To Dalton: Higher Education And The Degree Salesmen is an erudite presentation and highly recommended reading -- especially for those charged with responsibilities as educational administrators, policy makers, and curriculum developers.

A lichenological perspective of Britain
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-05
A good textbooks on lichenized fungi, for those who already have experience with species diversity of this group of organisms. Only the first 4 of 13 chapters are devoted to the general topics such as morphology, historic uses, the role in ecosystems and the use as bioindicators. The other chapters describe the lichen flora in particular habitats: Acid rocks, heaths and moors, chalk and limestone, mountains, rivers, lakes, the coast, as well as man-made substrates are treated in detail and interesting localities in Britain are highlighted. The detailed ecological information on lichens makes this book also important for readers outside Britain. The book is well illustrated with 16 color plates, numerous black and white photographs, and many line drawings.

AN EXCELLENT REFERENCE TO U.S. ARMY MANNERS, 19th CENTURY
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-23

Using Captain King's fictional writings of the late 19th and early 20th century, the author has gleaned an almost complete retelling of the life and manners of the Indian Fighting army of the plains. Captain, later General, King through his service years wrote through fiction to list the non-fictional rules of behavior that he and his brother officers had to adhere. Not to do so made one not an officer and gentleman, and the career of that man soon came to an abrupt end.

Though this book has very long chapters and has the feel of a slow read, it is every bit worth the time expended with it. Anyone remotely interested in what went on inside those western posts and encampments, needs to read this book. I am very surprise mine is the only review listed here. I bought this book in hardcover back when originally published and after a rereading, decided to at the least give it some review.

And the best test of Charles King's novels was that the cadets at West Point who read these books, when later seeing service at western posts, knew exactly what to expect and fit in correctly. Their service proved the truth and reliability of these writings of General King. Now you too can benefit from an armchair reading of these rules of conduct and behavior from the military past.

This was written way back at the turn of the century. Long out of print, they are excellent observations of birds that is very hard to read about now. Any of this series should be owned by serious or even casual birders.

Microhabitat of a flowerbed

Review Date: 2004-07-24
Starts with a description of the habit of typical flower gardens. General introduction to flowers including such topics as sun needs, life cycles, size, etc. Shows how seeds grow and discuses pollination. Briefly mentions soil. Touches on quite a number of animal, insect, and various life forms that inhabit gardens. Illustrations are clearly labeled and include a good mix of photos and drawings. Book design is colorful and page layout varies nicely. Includes a glossary, reading list, and extensive index. Karen Woodworth-Roman, Children's Science Book Review

I've been looking for this book for years!

How marvellous it is when, after bumping into the furniture in a darkened room for so long, somebody switches the light on! This book is a godsend. It doesn't matter how old you are, or what stage in your life you are at: Jack Oliver gives you so many easy entry points into the life-long process of financial planning that you can find your way in next to no time.

As the title suggests, the book is broken up into 7 "ages": Birth & Education, Work, Marriage, Parenthood, Career Development, Retirement and Old Age. The book is peppered with "decision trees", which allow you to start reading at the best "age" for you. Each "age" section has its own decision tree which makes it easy to review the options appropriate for that age, and allows you to back-track to elements from earlier ages if you skipped them at the time (e.g. not having proper life assurance with your mortgage). The decision trees are very clear so that you can decide for yourself what sort of provisions you might want to make. He shows you the benefits of making those provisions, and the typical costs you can expect.

I am a shareholder, a company director, a pension fund trustee, a company secretary, a husband, a father and a house owner. I have been subject to a great deal of financial advice over the last 5 to 10 years, but it does not hang together in a coherent picture. Oliver's book contains everything I have ever worried about, and more besides, and all of it in the most organised and accessible fashion. I would recommend it to anybody.
