I've decided to buy this book for a few of my New York based and New Yorkophile friends who don't quite yet have everything! Its substance and detail remind me how feather-weight and useless the Zagat guides are....

An original, unexpectedly thoughtful treatment...

Who ever knew brunch was worth a book? It reads somewhat like a novel - not just numbers and quotes in the manner of most restaurant review books. I liked it - seems like it would be great for a tourist in particular.

This story should be scripted as a dramatic movie.

Dialogue was the best of any book I can remember. The story becomes involved to show the key human relationships framing life in a small southwestern town, relationships which are both random and conventional. Fully sufficient details of human character and habit illuminate the story, in clear contrasting colors, and not made out to be any more complicated than authentic life. Ultimately, this is a sensitive and credible account of a youth's emerging determination to establish values, after always knowing how to think for himself.

I had already read Vandenberg several times in the past years, but have now ordered out-of-print copies of everything Lange has written and will cover them all with real anticipation.

An amazing story, sensitive and probably before its time. Surprising lack of violence and sensitivity unseen in today's craft. Was nominated for pulitzer and internationally printed. You won't regret reading this book and all his others.

Reliable and Tasty Recipes

I love this book and have cooked many recipes from it and they have turned out very well. The food is easy to prepare, the recipe instructions are clear and precise and the ingredients are fairly easy to find. The lemongrass and prawn soup is one of the recipes that turned out extremely well for me. I love to cook and this is one of my favourites because I know I will not be disappointed with the results. It is a reliable cookbook in the sense that I am sure that the end result will always be something really awesome.

One of my best finds yet

This book is really easy to use and inspiring. I started with the 'easy' recipes and they were really well received by hubby and friends. Now every time we have family to stay they always want Thai. Tried the Stir Fry Pork with Chillies and Cashews last Friday and even though I had eaten the cashews with a glass of wine before the family arrived, they still raved about the meal. So much so that I am buying this book for my Daughter in Law for Christmas !

One of the best mysteries I've ever read. It reminded me about what I loved about Sherlock Holmes stories. First and foremost, Elkins' writing is very fluid and descriptive. This story is succinct and poignant without the frills of other writers trying to show how wonderfully they can write. A close second, is Elkins' protagonist, Gideon Oliver, an anthropologist with a talent for his analysis of skeletons. There are many layers to this mystery and they come together very nicely. Great ending! Powerful and with a twist!

"Oliver" scares those monster fears away

Not only has Oliver succeeded in scaring the monsters out of our house, but the book has large, colorful pictures that keep my toddler enthralled. From an educational background, I am impressed with all the wonderful action words and adjectives that my little one is learning. Now instead of fighting my son tooth and nail to go to sleep, he reads me his memorized version of "Oliver" and tells me to turn off the light.

After reading Oliver Kringle with my two kids we have had much discussion about Santa Clause. My son said oh, now I get it. I understand how Santa does all of that now. My son is at a very curious age and Matott's humorous angle on Santa's brothers continues to generate questions. This is a great book which will be read many times over by both kids. The illustrations are outstanding!

This well written, well thought out book uses the archetypes of mythology (Campbell, Jung, etc) and uses them to help us understand the importance of myths as they apply to the modern world. Stone's films are some of the best examples of modern mythology and have a heightened sense of realism. This approach contributes to a new and maybe better understanding of his movies. I highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates mythology or the films of Oliver Stone. I think he is one of our finest modern-day storytellers.

Combines academic and non-academic perspectives

Ms. Mackey-Kallis apparently comes from an academic perspective, as she weaves a variety of interdisciplinary theories (mass communication theory, film studies, etc.) while still drawing from imagery that is understandable to non-academics. If you want to understand the theory behind the creativity of Oliver Stone, you'll want to read this book.

This book is a cute story about a brother and sister and sharing. It is beautifully illustrated and has thick pages with a raised border throughout. My 4 year old daughter just got this as a gift and refuses to read any other book. I plan on giving this book as a gift to as many birthday parties as my daughter is invited to this winter!

'Oliver's Red Toboggan' is a gift that keeps on giving, as it illustrates the joy that sharing can bring!

When young bunnies Oliver and Emily Boxwood go to bed one night during a snowstorm, they hope more than anything that they will wake up to a snow day, where they can spend the day sledding down Windy Hill, building snowmen, and avoiding schoolwork of all kinds. Luckily, when they awake in the morning, they find that their wish has been granted, and that all of Holly Pond Hill is blanketed by thick, white snow. Looking to enjoy one of the few days off they receive, Emily and Oliver grab Oliver's new, bright red toboggan, and decide to try it out on Windy Hill. However, when they get there, Oliver becomes greedy with his toboggan, and, to Emily's dismay, does not allow her to take a ride down the snowy hills as he promised. Emily is extremely angry with Oliver. So, to get her revenge, she traipses through the snow, away from Windy Hill, where she begins work on constructing her very own snow castle. When Oliver attempts to come in, she refuses his entry, and the two bunnies become angry with one another. But when, in the midst of their unnecessary quarrel, Emily and Oliver learn that their forest friends Mr. and Mrs. Squirrel, along with their young babies, have been displaced from their home by the storm, the two siblings learn that sharing with one another, along with their friends, is much more rewarding than being greedy and selfish.

I have been a huge fan of Susan Wheeler's illustrations for years, purchasing gift cards, and holiday books by her for years. So I was ecstatic when I learned that Susan Wheeler had teamed up with Paul Kortepeter to create a delightful new tale of wintry fun that is perfect through the holiday season, as well as the coming winter months. Kortepeter has done a splendid job of weaving a tale that embraces the spirit of a wondrous snow day, and paired it with a lesson in sharing, and the fact that giving is better than receiving. His characters are delightful - even when they are being cross with one another - and are very reminiscent of the many fights siblings have with one another. The tale, paired with the absolutely gorgeous illustrations by Wheeler truly bring the story, and the characters to life, and leave visions of sledding and snow castles in the mind of anyone who has the pleasure of delving into this delightful tale. OLIVER'S RED TOBOGGAN is a gift that keeps on giving, as it illustrates the joy that sharing can bring!

Review Date: 2004-02-20
An involving tale about the challenges of modern family relationships and the powers of redemption. Oliver has created complex characters that seem so real, at times you almost forget you're reading fiction. The mother, Josephine, is particularly memorable as she struggles through life's bittersweet moments, honestly and often painfully, sharing her secrets and disappointments. I found the ending both believable and satisfying. I'll be keeping an eye out for future books by this new author!

Compelling!

I was thoroughly engrossed in this book. The characters are very real, and their problems recognizable, though the characters themselves are not your ordinary people. Family relationships are always delicate, needing a lot of tlc. I wanted to shake some of them at times to make them see truth. They were so wrapped up in themselves that they missed many opportunities for happiness. There were lots of surprises in these lives. I would like to read a sequel to see how what progress was made after some eye opening events. I recommend this book heartily.

This book is a summary of six of Pentex's most influential subsidiaries. Though a Werewolf the Apocalypse book, these Pentex companies can be used as antagonists or story hooks for any game in the World of Darkness. A lot of real-world research went into the making of this book. Nothing is over-the-top and the fact that these evil companies resemble so many real companies only makes the setting creepier. Well, the rpg company in the book is a spoof, but everything else was serious. The book deals with the business and operations of Pentex oil, pharmaceutical, alcohol, toy, video game, and rpg companies. This was a very good read and I encourage all White Wolf storyteller's to pick up this book. The antagonists here can be used against vampires, werewolves, wraiths, mages, hunters, and anything else the players decide to play. I enjoyed every section in the book. It would have been better if there were more companies listed for your enjoyment.
