I went to the Philippines in January of this year in order to walk the Bataan Death March and to see Corregidor, generally on Luzon to visit many of the WW II battle sites. Recently, I came across Abie Abraham's
"Oh, God, Where Are You?" Although it is a long book (599 pp.), I finished it quickly because it is immediate in its detailed description of the March, the cruelties of Japanese soldiers, the courage of the American and Filipino soldiers and people along the way who often sacrificed their own lives to help the weak and the weary. The most compelling part of the book is the last 250 or so pages detailing his acceptance of Gen. MacArthur's personal request that he find and disinter the bodies of American soldiers buried along the way of the March, mostly by villagers who remembered. His is an extraordinary book, well worth the price and the time spent reading it.

Painful Reminder of Events We Must Not Forget

I read this book because Abie Abraham was a bunkmate of my great-uncle, Lloyd Spradlin, who survived the Bataan Death March only to die of dysentery in Cabantuan prison, an infamous hell-hole run by the Japanese. Although I never knew my Uncle Lloyd personally, I grew up listening to stories of the pain the family suffered when this wonderful, handsome young man was taken at the age of 22, in September, 1942. He enlisted when he was 18, and only had 2 months left of his tour of duty when the war broke out in the Pacific and the Bataan Peninsula was overrun by the Japanese. These men held out under insurmountable obstacles and fought a delaying action that has all but been forgotten. They felt forgotten, too, and called themselves "The Battling Bastards of Bataan -- no father, no mother, and no Uncle Sam ... and nobody gives a damn."
This book outlines in vivid, graphic language the horrors Mr. Abraham and thousands of other prisoners endured, and then goes on to describe Mr. Abraham's efforts after the war to disinter hundreds of American and Filipino soldiers and have their remains returned to their families. My uncle was one of these, and was returned to be buried in Lexington, Kentucky. He is personally mentioned several times in the book, along with many, many others. Mr. Abraham's memory is awesome, and I congratulate him on writing a first-hand story -- one that is becoming all too rare nowadays as we are losing so many of our precious World War II veterans.
I'm 44 -- and while I don't remember these events personally, we must never forget the sacrifice our American boys gave in the first horrible months of World War II in the Pacific.
If you're interested in World War II history at all -- especially the events in the Philipines -- this is a must-read book.

"Oh God, Where Are You" is one of the best books I've ever read. It really shows the horrors of war and shows that Abie is truly a hero along with all of the others who died on or after the Bataan Death March. Even though I'm 17, I personally know Abie and work with him at the Butler VA Hospital. He is a great inspiration to me and many others. Rick

I began reading this book because it contains mention of my great-uncle (Pvt. Neal Wood, Twenty-seventh Bomb Squad), and found it to be so riveting that I would read and read until the pages were getting blurry. While the writing style is a bit repetitive and at times tedious, the subject definitely keeps attention. Uncle Neal survived the Bataan Death March and the infamous Camp O'Donnell only to die of dysentery and starvation at Cabantuan. Abie Abraham and others that were fortunate to survive spent three years in the prison camps under the abusive rule of the Japanese.

Don't be daunted by the length of this book; I usually would take quite some time to read a book of this length, but I finished this one very quickly.

Mr. Abraham also has his own website (ghostofbataan.com) for anyone who is interested. From there, you can email him or explore various features like the message board.

Too often, people forget about our heroes in the Pacific during WWII because of the focus on the heroes in the European theater; let us not forget the many men who served in the military to protect our country in the Philippines. I think every high schooler should read this book so that the leaders of the future will understand how hellish war really is, not just a surgically sterile type of operation.

We must never forget the murderous Japanese people !

Greetings ... I'm young spunk compared to great men such as Mr. Abraham and my Father, and yet Dad managed, if such was possible, to impart to me some small appreciation of the utter hell our brave American men and women, many chronological teens, suffered for the sake of the whole world. While I will remain anonymous, I also am privileged to have received Mr. Abraham's testament to my father's own sacrifice in World War II. I never can grasp the extreme torture and horror endured by "Abie" and, possibly to a lesser extent, Dad. All I can say is that while there is a love and a thankfulness in my heart and my soul and the rest of my father's family for the utter brutality and total defiance of the rules of war (Geneva Convention) by the Japanese, Germans and Russians, sadly, along with a lot of great young kids half my age or less, there are ALSO a LOT of total PUNKS that could care diddly for what men like Mr. Abraham and Dad have endured for their benefit. Take warning, today's ACLU, left-wing feminazis, post-1960s flower-people, National Education Association and Jane Fonda replicas, if it wouldn't have been for selfless heros and heroines like Mr. Abraham and my father, you wouldn't even have the FREEDOM to tell these "fuddy duddy" old (supposedly) "worthless" Veterans types what you think of them. Wake up, America, and re-fortify yourself - don't listen to Europe ... don't be fooled, we are STILL in a "cold war" and Communism and Socialism did NOT become extinct with the taking down of the Berlin Wall. Buy the book. Read it. And get ready for the day when the ACLU inevitably comes along and searches your home for every non-burned copy. Don't let all the hell of Bataan and all the other horrors of the first and second world war be for nothing. While there is time, listen to your fathers and mothers. And teach YOUR children.

This is an inspiring book and not just for women. You get a good idea about how to help a spouse through frightening times with your own positive attitude, attention, and comfort. Sue's God is immanent and dwells among us. Like the Emersonian Transcendentalists, Sue sees reminders of God through nature and through the wonders of His work with other patients. Her unspoken message is Don't wait to put your trust in God; do it now.

Both my husband and I enjoyed the moving story of Ms. Tealls cancer journey. As a survivor myself, I thought she acurately described many of the emotions one goes through during treatment and after. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has just been diagnosed or has a loved one with any type of cancer. I was so moved by this book, that I donated a copy to my local cancer resource center.

As I read along in Dr. Valentine's book, I was taken back to so many thoughts and situations that have come before, in my own life. With great humor and wit, Sheryl Valentine describes her experiences and how she dealt with them, from simple to complex, all of her personal solutions seem practical yet inspired. I really like this book which is far above the genre of self-help and delves into the author's personal experience and great faith. Well written and designed for maximum impact through somewhat episodical sections and paragraphs. This again, is brilliant for those of us with short attention spans, at the same time not light-weight but substantial. Good message, and highly recommended!

Dr. Sheryl Valentine has done an excellent job of combining many fundamental principles from "A Course in Miracles" with a wealth of personal experience, practical examples, and humor. I especially appreciated the chapter "Dealing with People Who Drive You Nuts." Although it does not specifically focus upon miracles, the win-win solutions to everyday problems that this book will inspire will certainly seem miraculous. It's a welcome addition to my bookshelf, and I heartily recommend it.

If anyone was supposed to write a book, it's got to be Dr. Sheryl Valentine. A gifted healer and lecturer, she has touched thousands of lives with her amazing ability to share with others what she understands innately and what she has learned through experience and practice. I no longer live where I can easily attend Dr. Valentine's lectures, so when I heard about "Oh my God. It's Me!" my first thought was, "Oh my God! That's great!"

This book delivers on so many levels, I truly stand in awe of it. I have to admit that before I read it, I wondered if Dr. Valentine could encapsulate the dynamism and color of her personality in book form, and anyone who has ever heard her speak will know what I'm talking about. Well, the fantastic news is that she did it! She's present in every word. What's even more amazing is she has packed so much more into every word. This is not a book for speed reading. It's more like a friend you'll want to keep nearby for whenever you want a lift or a way to look at a problem from a fresh perspective. I loved reading this book, but I know that rereading it will be even better.

Divided into five sections - Healing Through Relationships, Power in a New Perception, Spiritual Practice, Truth in Story, and Moving Forward - "Oh my God. It's Me!" is further subdivided into short lessons, exercises, essays, and poems that offer insight, guidance, and wonderfully valuable, life-enhancing tools. Using analogies from the prodigal son to Dorothy's dog Toto, Dr. Valentine has done a fantastic job of transferring her insights and uniquely compelling guidance to the printed page. The result is Dr. Sheryl Valentine in book form - and - Oh my God! She's great!

A MUST READ FOR ALL

George Wallace has written an insightful, seminal work that challenges every belief and every value you have ever held.

He has managed to offend every aspect of faith and religiosity. His observations are both outrageous... and true.

No religion, no doctrine, no faith, no evangelist, no leader, is spared his razor-sharp wit, his keen intellect, and his knack for cutting though all the BS that infects religious thought.

The talking heads of religion are squirming in their pulpits... and some are already calling for the head of George Wallace on a stick.

Reviewed by Rhiannon Kelly Fionn for Reader Views (1/6)

In "Oh! God? Is That You? I Have A Question.", George B. Wallace encourages his readers to look beyond the "truths" organized religion, family, and society have fed us and, instead, reach for our own truths with the aid of questions and logic. This book represents Mr. Wallace's personal image of God. He is endearingly wise enough, however, to include a disclaimer stating that he could very possibly have it all wrong. Simultaneously he reminds us how important it is to seek our own answers versus blindly and naively accepting any homogenized, censored, revised details presented to us as the one path to God.

Conversational with an occasional sarcastic or silly jab, Mr. Wallace explains key points with vivid, charismatic description. For instance, in reference to a soul being banished to Hell he writes, "Burned souls would give God indigestion." Or when discussing the life and times of Jesus he says, "Jesus' life was not about magic, or mumbo jumbo; it was about love, but it is likely that later writers added a lot of decoration to the icing on the cake".

As someone who enjoys the study of various religions and spiritual paths, I found myself dog-earing pages while making mental lists of people to steer toward this title. I am impressed by Mr. Wallace's purposeful and pointed examination of God taking his readers beyond the obvious so that we might better connect to and clarify the role of God, and his (or her) motivations, in our lives and world.

This book is for all thinking souls; a brilliant reminder to not only question authority but to also question the answers authority returns. This book may not be for the deeply indoctrinated for, I fear, their minds may well explode. If you prefer to wrap yourself in a cloak of groupthink and play follow and finance the leader-put this book down and go back to covering your eyes. On the other hand, if you enjoy asking "Why?" you will savor "Oh! God? Is That You? I Have A Question."

Jen Sorensen's "Slowpoke" is one of best weekly strips out there. It's often political and always funny. This collection is plump and makes for some good reading. Brief comments and updates under each comic add to the collection.

One of Jen's strongest suits is her eye for pop culture weirdness. Hipsters, ipods, bizarre fashion trends, and eye glasses are fodder for some of the best cartoons in the book.

On the political front, there's plenty for folks who have followed the news over the past 8 years (a.k.a. elites). Historians may look back at strips like "The Privatization of Snow" and lament the days when the Globoplundimaxx Corp. wasn't yet a reality and only brilliant satire for us to enjoy. "Gay Republican Guilt Camp," however, may already exist in some form--but if you don't buy the book you'll never know what goes down in the confession booths.

One Nation, Oh My God! brings back great memories of strips and comments I have read on her site over the past few years. Having them all in one handy tome has made for delightful evenings on the sofa. Jen has an uncanny knack for making points that desperately need to be made in a most eloquent and thoughtful (and hilarious) way.

Why, Oh Why, My God?: Meditations on Christian Faith and the Meaning of Life is a collection of brief reflections upon Christianity by Abbe Pierre of the Emmaus (1912-2007), recipient of France's highest civilian honor, a former participant of underground resistance against the Nazi occupation during World War II, founder of the Emmaus movement, and tireless champion of the poor and the homeless. His simple, honest words reveal the life and perspective of a man who dedicated his life to serving his fellow men and women in God's name. The topics he presents his views on range from different attitudes between Buddhism and Christianity ("The Christian does not try to eliminate suffering by avoiding desire but rather tries to react to personal desire through sharing and giving.") to the question of whether Jesus Christ shared a physical relationship with Mary Magdalene, to whether gays should be allowed to marry or parent and whether women should be allowed to serve as priests, to his take on the Iraq War and much more. "Should we have responded to the terrible provocation of Al Qaeda with a new crusade? Can we cure evil with evil? I fear that all this will propel the world into a new war between Christian and Muslim civilizations - which is, of course, what Bin Laden wants." A short yet profoundly honest, faithful, and powerful testimony, highly recommended for Christian readers of all walks of life.
