Unique insights into the role colleges have to play

Collaboratively edited by Richard Goode (McMahon Professor of English and Chair of Queens College English department) and Robert Whalen (Carolyn G. and Sam H. McMahon, Jr., Professor of History and Chair of Queens College's history department), Like Shooting Rapids In The Dark is an informed and informative collection of writings on education by Billy O. Wireman, the recently retired president of the Queens College. Wireman's wisdom on the role of liberal arts education today and in the future, guarding against overspecialization as a form of "illiteracy" with regard to everything except one narrow niche, how people have readied themselves for a productive career throughout history up to the modern day, and more. Like Shooting Rapids In The Dark is highly recommended for its unique insights into the role colleges have to play in shaping a new generation of minds in the years to come.

Let me state first that I have known Dr Wireman for over a decade and consider him a friend. But after reading this book, I have new appreciation for his talents, quiet leadership, management style, perserverance and in particular, his prescience in recognizing the consequences of globalization before many others both in and out of education.

The excellent selections of his speeches and writings in this well-edited compact volume led me to think of Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's former prime minister. Lee was a leader who started out as a socialist lawyer but pragmatically transformed himself into a firebrand politician and then into a visionary statesman who led his small, resource-poor country to become the most "globalized" market economy in Southeast Asia. Often the question is asked -- a tribute to Lee's intellect and leadership: What if he had been in charge of a big nation like China?

Dr Wireman started out as a physical education teacher and coach and turned himself into an innovative administrator and then a visionary educator who led a small, resource-poor institution into one of the most "globalized" liberal arts universities in the US. Queens may not be as famous as the Ivy League colleges, but it is a unique institution that has prospered in large measure because Wireman, his colleagues and his coalitions of volunteers all recognized the need to "think global, act local" -- to plug into the world, while serving the needs of their constituents in Charlotte and the southern US.

I hasten to add that unlike Lee, Dr Wireman did not achieve his goals through authoritarian rule. As one can plainly see in his writings and speeches, he is a committed democrat and liberal thinker. Readers will enjoy these gems of "disarmed truth." Wireman's views on the student protests of the 1960s are particularly insightful. There is humor, too. Take a look at his advice for fellow college presidents. He offers inspiration to fundraisers everywhere and especially to educators in developing and developed countries who may be struggling in little known, cash-strapped institutions but who are doggedly determined to provide the best possible education to their students.

What could Dr Wireman have accomplished if he had been running a larger, better known institution? It is a moot question that, as with Singapore's Lee, is silly to ask. The point is that Wireman, like Lee, made his mark by steering a small, but nimble player to become world-class. That was his mission -- and that is his enduring legacy.

A benchmark for liberal arts education

This is a very unique book. Through it we have a vivid view of a man who, at one time was the youngest college president in the country, develop from a "jock", physical education instructor, to an internationally acclaimed leader in liberal arts education.
With his breadth of experience Billy O. Wireman, former president of Florida Presbyterian College (now Eckerd College) and Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina presents excerpts from writings and speeches given over 38 years.

He has the special ability to present his insights, visions, and hopes in a manner easily read and comprehended by the parents and their young person planning to enter college and, yet, thought provoking to a seasoned professional in the academic arena.

With uncanny accuracy, beginning back in the 60's, Dr Wireman scolds, cautions, and pleads with leaders in higher education to open college education to all ages, to move into multicultural arenas, to become interdisciplinary, to hold faith and reason in balance, to search for connections and to embrace our knowledge on a global level.

I consider this writing a benchmark in where liberal arts came from, where it is now , and where it needs to go in the academic field, the world marketplace and in the hearts and souls of the people.

"Shooting Rapids" is a well organized, insightful and entertaining collection of writings by one of America's finest educators. Dr. Wireman has done an excellent job of chronicling the recent history of higher education based on his firsthand experience. Dr. Wireman covers it all - from the student lead war protests of the 1960's to defining, in the new millennium, the age old question, "What is a university for?"

In my opinion, one of the most valuable pieces of knowledge Dr. Wireman leaves with the reader is on page 56, "The president's relationship is not one of employer-employee but rather colleague to colleague." As someone who has had the privilege of being a recipient of Dr. Wireman's tutelage, both as a student and colleague, the insights and lessons he shares are valuable to anyone striving for a productive career and noble life.

I bought this book because I enjoyed the Linux Cookbook book that Carla also wrote. This book is formatted much the same. I don't have to read pages and pages of discussion just to find what I need. It's a handy reference.

Network stuff can be complicated. Thanks to this book, I'm better at it.

I only hope that Carla is working on the next "cookbook"!! 8-)

This cookbook gets quickly down to business with an amazing breadth of useful networking information. I've found it to be an excellent guide for hands on learning of networking with Linux

The book only asks that you have a basic understanding of working from the command line. Where applicable the instructions for various solutions are given for Fedora and Debian.

The most valuable parts for me thus far are how to access machines remotely and this applies to working on your linux box remotely and working with windows machines remotely from a linux machine. As networks become increasingly mixed with unix/linux and windows - this book is going to be more and more relevant and useful in that area.

The amazon price makes this useful collection of knowledge a really great deal.

OK so what's it about ... well it's certainly a special fetish book for those readers that do enjoy erotic spanking. I have reviewed many of the erotic lit books in Amazon and have through the years received emails from readers requesting reccommendations for these types of books ..... this one sure has to be the hefties of all ...at almost 500 pages this large volume is prctically nothing but the repeated spanking of the young maid Lisa ...

There are some normal sex episodes in this book but I would probably count them as no more than five pages, if that, and you could count them on one hand ... even if you were missing fingers .... LOL

Anyway I certainly didn't like this book .. but the it really wan't written for me ....

Chapter by chapter, volumes 1 and 2 just get better and better and I can hardly wait for volume 3! I'm torn between wanting to read on and on past my bedtime (uh oh!) or limiting myself to one delightful chapter at a time. If you've ever found a spanking story arousing -- or have wished to be involved in adult spanking -- this is the series for you. The spanking activities and reactions of all involved are quite realistically presented and the characters grow and achieve more depth throughout the series. The author really does understand the female point of view, but I can attest that it comes from his being a wonderfully bright and funny, safe, sane, and consensual, experienced male top who definitely knows how to spank a bottom!

The Maid for All Seasons series is an exciting blend of erotica and fetish based in a plot line that is written not to frame the sexual scenes but to drive them. O'Neill has taken a taboo subject and written it not only for men but for women as well. Not crass or harsh it focuses on those subtle nuances that will appeal to women, though men will enjoy the theme and detail given to the story's more basic desires. Written the way foreplay should feel this series should establish a fan base that crosses gender and lifestyle boundaries.

One of the best tunebooks of Irish traditional music

Review Date: 2004-07-27
You really can't not have this book, if you're going to get very deep into Irish traditional music. I think most Irish musicians would agree with me on that, too. (I teach Irish traditional fiddle.) There is another version, edited by Miles Krassen, that I do not recommend (Krassen "updated" the settings in idiosyncratic and often not particularly helpful ways). But I do recommend the other "big" O'Neill's--"1001 Gems." The latter and "Music of Ireland" are *not* the same book, although they have considerable overlapping content, many tunes are in one but not the other.

Basically, while as a teacher and player I don't recommend actually *learning* tunes from tunebooks like this, this great tome is extremely useful for purposes of reminding yourself how tunes go, for acquainting yourself with tunes, for getting ideas about good settings, for practicing sight-reading, etc.

A solid Irish folk music collection

Review Date: 2006-07-21
I purchased this for my father, who is a mountain dulcimer enthusiast. It's a nice thick book with soft cover, bound with the cheapness typical of most music publications. It's too big to sit easily on a music stand, so I imagine it's intended as a sort of Irish folk music dictionary. In this capacity, it is excellent. There are nearly two-thousand tunes, indexed by title. These are short- the vast majority only a couple of lines long. A tune consists of melody on a treble-clef staff (if you need tablature, this isn't a good place to start), embellished by 19th-century style ornaments. Each is given both its conventional Irish (Gaelic) and English names and the composer to whom it is attributed. There are no notes about the scholarship behind the collection or how these tunes might be approached in performance. The engraving is nice (done around the turn of the century), and fairly easy on the eyes.

I was in a small pub in Baltimore for the ceili beginner's nights they have, and was asking some of the advanced regulars about good books with Irish music. They showed me a copy of this book and told me it was "the Bible of Irish music," and that's just what it is. With about 240 pages of more than 1000 jigs, reels, slip jigs, hornpipes, set dances, and Carolan's compositions, this book has it all. This is the real stuff too, because many of the songs from the book can be found on various Chieftains recordings, so it gives you the ability to play the music of the greats. Among others, there are versions of "Toss the Feathers," "Soldier's Joy," "The Wind that Shakes the Barley," "The Job of Journeywork," and the list goes on. This is a fiddle book, but the music can be played and sight read by any person of any instrument. I am a flutist and love this book. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a thorough compilation of quality Irish music.

The Essential Irish Tune Book

Review Date: 2006-09-08
Look no further. Of all the Irish tune books, this is the one to get. It goes by many names, "O'Neill's", the "big O'Neill's", the "1850", and the "yellow book". Like the Fiddler's Fakebook, I am on my second "yellow book", having worn out the first till the pages came out. This collection contains most if not all of the Irish tunes you will hear being played, and many hundreds more you will want to play.

I find it indispensable for several reasons -

It's a reference - when I hear an Irish tune that I like on an album or in concert or a jam session, I look it up in the "yellow book" to determine the canonical version. I'll probably end up playing it my way anyway, or the way I hear it played, but I like to at least see the "official" version.

It's a collection - most of the Irish tunes I have come to love and learned to play are here collected in one volume.

Its an exercise book - the "1850" serves as a seeming endless supply of sight reading material, after I have practiced scales and tunes I know.

It's a diamond mine - there are gems in there, just waiting to be learned. Amazing and uncommon tunes lying between the pages waiting for the curious musician to breath life into them. Grab a tune, take it to a session, set it free.

Get a copy of O'Neill's Music of Ireland, and the Fiddler's Fakebook. There are many other wonderful tune books, but these two are essential.

I got hooked on Takahashi's work when I found Inuyasha (which, incidentally, is also the first anime series I followed). Just recently I found this earlier work of her's.

It is fantastic! Her loose yet detailed drawing style is incredible. The story is magnificent (Even if it does bounce back and forth in time from one episode to the next.) Takahashi fans will love it. People who never heard of Takahashi will be drawn into the club.

One thing for the uninitiated. These mermaids don't wear bikinis. So be prepared for quite a bit of upper-body nudity. Nothing that struck me as erotic or anything like that, but it is there.

Oh, and the volume ends on a cliffhanger. Buy volume 2!

I have no idea why I skipped over this manga. I love all of Rumiko Takahashi's titles, but the one she created as a "hobby"--Mermaid Saga--is the only one I missed. It is a very sad story--basically, it's a tale of love, immortality, and of course, adventure. Consuming the flesh of a mermaid grants eternal life, but being alive forever can be a blessing or a curse. Immortal lovers Yuta and Mana have been alive for a very long time, but neither wished for this--in fact, they both wish to die a normal, natural death. Becasue of this, they are both searching for the mermaids because there is a rumor that only the mermaids know how to reverse the immortality spell upon their victims. This is a good story, and the art is simple, yet lovely. However, if you don't like horor (-ish) stories with more than a little bit of romance, (or you arn't a fan of Rumiko Takahasi) then don't read it.

Great storyline, great characters, great art. :D

Mermaid Saga is something I've been longing to read since I first saw reviews for "Mermaid Forest". Now, the reason I had not already purchased it is because I didn't have it in my area, and I didn't feal like ordering from Amazon so, I waited patiently and Viz republished it!!!

Now, I AM VERY familiar with Rumiko Takahashi, but I have NEVER actually read her work, not to say I haven't wanted to, other things have just topped my list lately. But this was one of the things that topped my list, so as soon as I knew it was republished, I bought it. I know enough about Takahashi to know that she normally does humorous things, like "Ramna 1/2" and "Inuyasha". But even though this is quite serious, it is a very intriguing, unique, and engross tale of immortality.

This story follows a man(Yuta) and a young woman(Manna). Both of them have eaten the flesh of a mermaid in there life. Which in this, if you have EXTREME luck, gives you the "gift" of immortality. All others whom don't have the "luck", either 1. turn into a "lost soul"(A hideous monster), or die(personally I'd rather die!!!). There are 3 stories in this one: Part 1 and 2 of "The Mermaid Never Smiles"(Where we first meet Yuta and Manna, and the mermaids/immortality), part 1 & 2 of "The Village of the Fighting Fish"(A story that tales of Yuta's past), and the 1st part of "The Mermaid Forest"(A story following Yuta and Manna after TMNS). All the stories have to do with the same people, but the second story is more of a back story, I think that one is probably my favorite, but all of them are awesome, and make me excited and impatient for the next volume!!!

The art style is your classic Takahashi, but it is beautiful. I have come to appreciate and love her art style with "Mermaid Forest". The translation, especially for Viz, is excellent. Not all of Viz's translations are bad, but they seem to hit or miss a lot. ;P

So, anyways, if you like Rumiko Takahashi, manga, or good stories in general(and don't mind some graphic violence), then you will undoubtedly enjoy this volume of "Mermaid Saga".

God Bless & *enjoy* ~Amy

Men and women seek out the flesh of mermaids because it is said that if you eat it, you will be granted immortality. Of course, what they don't know is that there is also a chance of instant death, or even worse, of being changed into a horrible ghoul. Yuta learned this centuries ago when he and some of his fellow fisherman, curious to see if the legends were true, decided to eat the flesh of a mermaid. While some of his comrades died instantly, others changed into soulless beasts. Only Yuta was given the gift or curse of eternal life. Yuta doesn't want it. He wants to grow old and die like normal people. So he sets out on a quest to find more mermaids because he has been told that only a mermaid can reveal to him how he can become a mortal man again.

During his wanderings he comes upon a village of murderous old hags who seem to have mermaids living among them. You see, they can also change into human form and walk on land. He learns that they are keeping a young girl named Mana imprisoned there her whole life and have fed her mermaid flesh for some dark reason, making her immortal too. It's up to Yuta to figure out some way to save both their lives.

The second story in the book is a flashback to an earlier period in Yuta's life when he encounters some bloodthirsty pirates out to catch a mermaid for the sly wife of their chief. Left for dead, Yuta is found by a rival but much more civilized pirate clan and a love story develops between him and their defacto female leader.

The last story in the volume, "Mermaid Forest" takes us back to contemporary times with Yuta and Mana. Mana, not knowing about automobiles and such because she has been a captive all her life, walks in front of a truck and is taken in by a nefarious doctor in the employ of a family who owns "Mermaid Forest", on whose grounds, a mermaid is alleged to be buried.

This was a very well-written manga. I wouldn't say it was for kids because it has a lot of gore and more than a little nudity. There's a thread of sadness through the storyline when you realize that Yuta and Mana are truly alone in the world. I don't really get Yuta though. He has a chance to stay with the queen of the pirates but refuses simply because he doesn't want to settle down in one place. If he lives forever, what's wrong with living out a life with someone you love? This manga had a lot of elements to it: horror, love story, and adventure. Be warned that Volume 1 does leave you hanging at the end on a cliffhanger.

I would also recommend Highlander on dvd. Also, similar themes are dealt with in Interview With a Vampire novel and movie.

There isn't a better story strip from the last 50 years than Modesty Blaise by Peter O'Donnell in the years it was drawn by Jim Holdaway. This volume starts from the beginning of the strip and is one you will read and reread. O'Donnell's writing is top-notch, and Holdaway's art sets a standard that few other other comic strip artists can ever match - and the combination is MUCH greater than the sum of the parts. Titan's presentation is excellent - crisp, large reproduction so the strips really shine. Excellent editorial matter - good introductions and a very useful episode and artist guide to the entire run of the strip.

Over the years there have been several Modesty Blaise reprints. The volumes from Titan are still the best and unlikely to be surpassed. Go for it.

A comic strip legend's legendary beginning

I cannot improve on Mr. Linguini's fine review, but here's mine. Prior to acquiring this volume, I had never read any Modesty Blaise. I'm pleasantly surprised.

The newspaper adventure strip has its special appeal and there is a small but devoted niche of readers for them. I have been reviewing the Checker Book Publishing Group Steve Canyon series, which is wonderfully drawn, imaginative, well-printed and bound, but the reproductions are unfortunately small. Also, I've contracted a seven-year itch after six years' worth of that series. So I tried a little Modesty.

The reproductions here are superb and their size is just right. (A daily strip is about 18 in² compared with the Checker Canyon's 11 in².) The binding is in signatures as are the Canyon strips. The stories have a freshness that is matched by the drawings.

The background story of the heroine is the stuff of legend (I leave it out here), inspired by a real life experience of the author. Her "sidekick" Willie Garvin is nothing like the bearded, buffoonish rustics we see in Canyon and some westerns (Lt. Blueberry, for example): he's her absolutely trusted, trusting and competent lieutenant. This makes for an effective team we care for, even if Garvin does hit no fewer than three women in the first three adventures. Our intolerance for such things today says quite a bit about some of the positive aspects of political correctness. Feminism, with Modesty in the avant-garde, had not yet quite gotten its bearings, but the strong, self-reliant, attractive woman, also being sketched in the co-temporal Avengers TV series, was a beacon for the future. The whole package is very sixties.

I haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere, but MB's looks are not conventional - that is, they don't quite fit into the comic strip mold of "beautiful woman." She comes close, though: she is very attractive, as if she's above-average looks-wise and takes perfect care of herself. She has a distinctive look. Whereas the Steve Canyon femme fatales vary in a few shorthand-type lines, Modesty Blaise has a largish nose, a narrow chin and high cheekbones, along with an expression in the eyes that is precisely hers, such that she can't be mistaken for anyone else. Most of the other characters in the series are also clearly distinct from each other. Holdaway's art stands out in this regard. In fact, a lot of Modesty's attractiveness is in her visual expression - a rare achievement in comic art.

This is the kind of strip that might entertain even non-strip readers. The stories are fun, action packed, superbly drawn, and so well paced that we wind up reading them too fast and wanting more when done. I can well understand the cult following this strip has. The Titan books are so well done that they are a sure bet for comic strip collectors or adventure aficionados. The Gabriel Setup is where you should begin: it has the first three adventures plus Modesty's origins. It's my first but by no means my last.

Such warm feelings of when I was a kid and would see this in the newspapers. I'd even taken to cutting out the daily strips and pasting them into an exercise book in an attempt to compile an entire story. Each story is so well crafted; the art is dark and mysterious. Modesty herself is chic and mesmerising and her sidekick Willie is the coolest guy. What a team! Add internationl intrigue to the mix, and you have the makings of true James Bond-like adventure. What an excellent way to pass a rainy afternoon! More please, more!

I used to read Modesty stories scattered across comic book albumes containing various comics. Now finally I got my hands on first five Modesty books, nicely bound, with creator's comments on almost each story. All in one place, at last.

Ms. O,Neill's book is one of my daughter's favorites!!! It deals with the hard issues of race in a very sensitive manner. After reading the book a child will understand that everyone is different, not necessarily "better" but different and that different is GOOD. This book should be on all the bookshelves in every school(children need to learn to be tolerant of one another, not hateful or envious or inferior)!!! This book is a good find.

This is a fun story that covers many questions that a child would ask. The world is getting smaller, and our diversity is growing by leaps and bounds. The awareness of such diversity starting at a young age will prepare our children to deal better in their growing world. And we as adults must lead by example.

Delightful children's book!

Lin Fong-O'Neill writes with tenderness and grace when exploring the famous 'why' question posed so often by little ones. What child has not, at least once in their life, felt ill at ease due to a perceived difference? This book explains, in simple language, the reasons why little children feel confused by differences, and how to remedy those feelings. This brightly illustrated children's book is sure to be a winner amongst children of every race and nationality!

Lin Fong O'Neill's book deals with life issues that are heart felt in a clear and compelling way. Her story is accessible to both children and to the adults who love (and read) to them.

The prose and illustrations compliment each other perfectly. The story accomplishes what all good writing should accomplish -it teaches and moves us emotionally at the same time.

I sincerely hope this is the first in a series.

Showers explains the difficult passages in Daniel using historic facts and teaching us to look into the future through the current events. It is a must for everyone who has a hard time understanding prophecy.

CRITICAL Foundation for Understanding the End Times....

Review Date: 2006-04-03
This book's title, though accurate, won't sell books, which is unfortunate since this is one book whose message needs to get out. In fact, after a general prophecy overview book, this is the single book that I most recommend for the general reader as foundational in order to understand the End Times and the stage-setting taking place before our eyes. The book of Revelation cannot be understood without understanding the Old Testament book of Daniel to which it alludes and fleshes out, and this book by master teacher and scholar Showers is the best commentary on Daniel for the general reader.

The title is both a name of God used by the prophet Daniel as well as the theme of the book of Daniel--i.e., that God is sovereign, or "most high" over men, nations, and rulers, humbling and exalting whom He will (individuals, rulers, nations), in control of history, and even telling us in advance what will happen. This book is a verse-by-verse commentary on all of Daniel, a book that is about more than prophecy, though Daniel's chapters 2, 7, and 9 do focus on prophecy and are absolutely essential to understanding when the Messiah will come again, the geographic origins of the Antichrist, the upcoming 7-year covenant with Israel with its rebuilt Holy Place, the Man of Sin World Ruler, and more, including chapters 6-19 of Revelation, which are based on Daniel.

I recommend this book to people wanting to understand the End Times but who are unaware that the Tribulation, the coming confederated superpower, and the "Antichrist" of Revelation all refer back to Daniel. Although Renald Showers is relatively unknown to popular audiences (he's not the type to toot his own horn), he's known, respected, and cited among dispensational theologians. If there are few reviews for this book, it's not because this book is some fly-by-night, it's just that Showers' writings are mostly known through his decades of work with The Friends of Israel Gospel Ministry. Doctrinally, Showers is top-notch, always precise, never going beyond the text into eisegesis. He writes from a "pre-trib, pre-mil" view, that the rapture happens before the Tribulation that in turn is before the Millenium.

The Most High God, like Showers' other works, is known for doctrinal faithfulness, eschewing speculation and sensationalism, and adherence to a literal, historical-grammatical approach to interpretation. Some of his books (such as his masterpiece Maranatha) are heavy with indexes and endnotes, but not The Most High God, which keeps it simple, straightforward, and suitable for the beginner, yet it's still helpful for readers already familiar with Daniel. This book shows how scripture-to-scripture comparison, history, and context give insight into the symbolic prophetic images, such as the 10-headed beast. Showers does not get into alternative, comparative interpretations of Daniel, for that try Walvoord's Daniel: The Key to Prophetic Revelation. The Bible says that the book of Daniel is "sealed" until the End Times, that'd be now, and I can't recommend this commentary on Daniel highly enough as a starting point to making sense of what is happening in the world and what will happen.

I admire Mr. Shower's view of the Bible. He has done a great job summarizing the book. The material is not indepth however it goes into enough information that any body reading it would say that his material is a great tool. I sometimes have a hard time reccomending a book especially to new believers, but if there is a new believer interested in studying the basics of the contribution of Daniel, then this is a great read!

Fifteen-year-old Allie and her divorced mom move once again, this time back to the small town where her mom grew up. It's their last chance: mom to break free of low-paying jobs, and Allie to settle down in school and make something of her math talents. Allie is a loner; in this town, she picks up the habit of going to the burials of strangers. She attends the graveside service of a boy her own age, who would have been in her math class. She becomes convinced he has been murdered. Through her sleuthing, the story of the town and its families becomes known. Allie attacks everything with her wry sense of humor and caustic attitude, except--typical to teenage behavior--herself. The reader can check off Allie's growth toward maturity and individualism as she interacts with a kind teacher who sees through her bravado, and also with the best friend of the boy who died. In the end, Allie has "come of age", and so has mom, the murder is solved, and it's a good, hearty read that gets you there.

Funeral obsessions...

Alexandra Canarsie, a.k.a. Allie, has the strange obsession of visiting cemeteries during funeral services, funerals of people that she doesn't even know. Having just moved to a new town and into a trailer, Allie feels alone. After hearing about the death of a student from her school, Jimmy Muller, a boy she might have known and become friends with if only he hadn't died, she becomes positive that his death was no accident at all and sets out on a search for the truth.

While reading this, I kept thinking of how much Allie Canarsie reminded me of Veronica Mars. Of course, her sleuthing skills weren't the greatest, but, come on, she didn't have the same resources, and her attitude fell in the same catagory.

Alexandra Canarsie is not unfamiliar with getting into trouble; in fact, it happens quite often. She can't seem to keep her mouth shut when it would really help, doesn't always make the greatest or smartest decisions, but still comes out with incredible character and is easy to identify with. Allie's journey to find the truth about Jimmy Muller leads her to some unexpected places, friends, allies(not meant as a pun), and some realizations about herself.

All at once sad, funny, and hopeful, Susan Heyboer O'Keefe's book should not be overlooked. I am really glad to have read this. Sometimes I find things that I completely hate, like just a little, or really love, which is rare. I loved this book, and consider myself extremely lucky to have found it.

This is a great read for middle-graders on up. Smart-mouthed but insecure Allie puts on a good self-defense act and alienates herself from family and those who might become friends. Her obsession with funerals (of people she doesn't know) and trying to unravel the mystery of what or who really killed Jimmy Muller will keep you turning pages as fast as you can read.
